Apple’s iWatch announcement could be big tease, with sales delayed until 2015

Between those new rumors about HTC wearables, and the surprise pre-IFA launches of the LG G Watch R and Samsung Gear S just the other day, we’ve totally got smartwatches on the brain. We’ve also been thinking a lot about Apple’s plans for its next product launches, especially with that invite for a September 9 event going out ...

Pair of HTC wearables could launch as soon as next month

Samsung, Sony, LG, ASUS, Motorola: a growing number of the big smartphone OEMs – or at least those with a toe in the Android pool – have been getting involved with smartwatches. But there’s one name almost conspicuously absent from that list; where’s HTC? We’ve known for a while now that the company has been open to the idea of making a smartwatch, and rumors have long talked about a model arriving sometime this year. Back in May, there was even specific talk of

Sony Xperia Z3 attracts rumors of US carrier interest

Last fall, Sony was talking about its global strategy for smartphones, and how it dreamed about working its way up through the ranks – not necessarily with lofty goals of dominating the industry, but maybe settling-in to a third-place spot, behind giants like Samsung and Apple. But in order to keep sales moving, the company decided to turn its attention away from certain markets it deemed just too competitive, including the US. In the time since, we’ve anxiously been checking out rumors that ...

Finding the smartwatch killer app

Contrary to what many may think, smartwatches have been around for quite a long time. I’m not talking about the kind of wristwatch that includes barometers and moon phases and whatnot, rather, I’m referring to the kind that can connect to smartphone using Bluetooth (or a similar technology). These modern smartwatches (Pebble, Samsung Gear, and Android Wear) are taking much ...

Best Android Apps: Convert Everything

Quickly, how does one convert a unit measured in Vickers Hardness to Brinell Hardness 10 mm C-Ball 3000 kgf with 7 decimal points precision? In terms of magnetic flux density, how many gauss equals 9000 militesla units? If one has a Beaufort Sea State of 7, what does that mean for sea surface conditions?

Convert Everything There’s actually a single Android app that answers all those questions. It’s Convert Everything from Fluffy Delusions, and it really earns its name by offering conversions for just about everything that can be converted.

Sure, users can easily turn to Google to convert inches to centimeters, or figure out the US dollar’s value against the Euro, but Google can’t calculate water hardness, angular acceleration, or HVAC efficiency. Convert Everything can, as well as 210 additional measurements/forces/items/sizes/etc.

The app is minimalistic, with the conversion options listed alphabetically in a scrolling list, each with basic info on when it was last used and the number of total times used. Users can choose favorites, or create and assign categories.

Know what to look for and the app is easy to use. For those not so sure, there is a basic search function for units and categories that helps cut through the clutter. Still, Convert Everything can be a bit overwhelming, and it’s tough to get in the habit of turning to an app when one has to convert hector liters to wine bottles.

The conversion units feature drop downs and text or number entry boxes. The on-screen keyboard has a nasty habit of sticking around and taking up screen real estate, including the main calculate button, but a refresh icon on the top nav serves the same function. Calculations come quick, though some, like Bitcoin value, depend on dynamic information, and require a sever connection. The static calculations, like engine RPM, can be done while the phone is offline.

There are two themes available, one with a black background and another with a white background, but that’s about it for overall options, which is just as well. It seems the developers spent their time coming up with things to convert, and then figuring out the dozens upon dozens of units and options contained therein.

While there is likely no single person that has use for all 213 conversions, or even a fraction of them, everyone will find at least two or three useful at some point. Good news for those still holding on to aging Android smartphones, as Convert Everything supports anything running Android 2.2 or later. Additional bonus points to the developers for offering a free, ad-supported version. However, the ad-free Pro version is more than worth the $2.99, given the breadth of the app.

Convert Everything from Fluffy Delusions is now available in the Google Play Store.

End in sight for OnePlus One invite system

It’s not often that we see a new company attempt to elbow-in on the already-crowded smartphone market, so when OnePlus introduced its One handset earlier this year, we sat up and took notice. But what started out as a very promising handset soon found itself beset by numerous launch issue: first we got word of this invitation-only sales system, before hearing about delays and seeing ship dates slip.

HTC One Mini on AT&T finally gets Sense 6 OTA

Many of us here at Pocketnow have been quite disappointed with the lack of love for “mini” phones – they’re generally crammed with mid-range specs, don’t get wide carrier adoption, and lag behind in terms of support and updates. The HTC One Mini update to Sense 6 is long overdue according to many, but it’s finally here for AT&T users. The update, which weighs in at a hefty 550MB, brings quite a few changes to the aging device. HTC One M8 for Windows review, abridged: what’s hot and not in 60 seconds (Video)

There are folks out there who don’t have the time for a ten-minute video or a 3,000-word review, and they certainly don’t have an hour to absorb a meandering podcast (no matter how many awards it’s won). These people might be sneaking a quick YouTube fix on a bathroom break, trying to make a point to a rival smartphone owner at a bar, or even standing in line at a wireless retail ...

Wearables and permanence: will you body-mod for tech? (poll)

I’ve always been the most technologically advanced guy in my family, and even in my group of friends. I’ve generally got the latest generation smartphone and tablet. I wear a Bluetooth headset for listening to music and making phone calls. I own several smartwatches (even before the LG G Watch and Pebble came on scene). My house, car, and office are peppered with NFC tags. Now we’re starting to see what I consider to be a disturbing trend: ...

Three things you didn’t know about the Kyocera Brigadier (Video)

Our own Michael Fisher proved last week that it is possible to scratch a synthetic sapphire display on a smartphone. Specifically, he roughed up the Kyocera Brigadier through several heinous tests, and impact with a hard material got the better of the extra hard sapphire. No less, the Brigadier is an impressively rugged smartphone that has both the IP certifications and the real world beefiness to back up the claims. But ...

Lunchboxed Galaxy Note 4 possibly caught on video

The Galaxy Note 4 is nearly here. Samsung’s been teasing the hell out of its phablet for next week’s pre-IFA Unpacked event, and all that remains now is to get the details. Which, to be fair, there are a lot that still need to be confirmed, and beyond specifics on hardware components, we still don’t have a great idea of how this phone will appear. There have been a few leaked pics of components, as well as supposed images ...
