The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are now available unlocked in the US

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are now available unlocked in the US

If you’re into TouchWiz, Samsung’s latest generation of smartphones are the pinnacle of Android. And now, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge are available totally unlocked.

Beginning in the US today, you can pick up either of the devices from Samsung’s own site, as well as other retailers, such as Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Sam’s Club.

Instead of committing with one carrier for a multi-year contract, the Galaxy S7 can be purchased outright for $669 and its slightly larger next of kin, the Galaxy S7 Edge, for $769.

Each device is stocked with a GSM and CDMA-ready antenna setup, so you’re free to use this with your choice of carrier, which in the US is Verizon, Sprint, AT&T or T-Mobile.

No matter which device or mobile carrier you choose to pair it with, you’re in for treat. We used such words as “iterative perfection” and “the best smartphone in the world right now” to describe Samsung’s most recent Galaxy smartphones, and we meant it.

It might be a lot of cash to shell out at once, but look no further if value, power, and tons of features are on your must-have list.

Purported photo of TCL-made BlackBerry Neon, aka Hamburg, crops up online

While the name “Priv” certainly had an odd ring to it at first, it wasn’t hard to grasp its origin and implication. Short for privacy, it played on a paramount selling point of BlackBerry phones since, well, forever. Now, the Android-powered QWERTY keyboard/touchscreen hybrid pretty much failed to substantially revive the ...

In Depth: First look at the Galaxy Note 7 front panel ‘confirms’ iris scanner

In Depth: First look at the Galaxy Note 7 front panel 'confirms' iris scanner

As unlikely as it once seemed an iris scanner has started to seem like a probable feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 given the number of leaks and rumors pointing to one, and now we may have got our first actual look at it.

An image purportedly showing the front panel of the Note 7, which was obtained by @OnLeaks and shared with Android Authority, shows far more lenses above the screen than you'll see on a typical Samsung handset.

While all those lenses aren't necessarily there for iris scanning it's hard to think what else they could be used for and they're in line with a recent iris scanner patent application from the company, uncovered by Patently Mobile.

Note 7 front panel

Edging towards the S7

Other than the apparent presence of an iris scanner the front panel looks a lot like the front of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, complete with curves on each edge of the screen, which is another feature that has been widely rumored.

There's still a bezel below the screen with a cut-out for a home button, but what it lacks is a Samsung logo, which on the S7 Edge sits above the screen and has presumably been removed here to shrink the bezel.

Of course the image could be fake, but @OnLeaks is one of the more reputable leakers and the shot is in line with existing rumors about the phone. With the Galaxy Note 7 expected to land in early August it's also about time we started seeing clearer looks at it.

Other recent (and believable) rumors include a 5.8-inch QHD screen, 6GB of RAM and a long-lasting battery of between 3,600mAh and 4,200mAh. In other words, this is a phone that should be worth waiting for.

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge officially launched stateside at $670 and up

While two-year contracts are no longer a thing across all of America’s “big four” carriers, their often convoluted postpaid plans and rigidity when it comes to network switching continue to make many people feel more comfortable buying unlocked gear out the box.Unfortunately, that’s not as easy as it sounds stateside, at least if you like authorized distribution channels and manufacturer warranties. But HTC, Motorola ...

If you hustle, a (refurb) Amazon Echo can be yours for just $135 ($45 off list)

If you had predicted a few years back that Amazon would achieve (far) more mainstream success with a quirky cylindrical smart speaker than a “groundbreaking” 3D smartphone, you probably risked ending up in a mental institution. But indeed, the e-commerce giant and part-time device manufacturer triumphed in the unlikely, nay, outlandish mission to put voice controls over hundreds of popular services inside a contraption also capable of wirelessly playing ...

Samsung’s Smart Glow could get a whole lot smarter for the Galaxy S8

Samsung's Smart Glow could get a whole lot smarter for the Galaxy S8

A couple of weeks ago a new Samsung feature dubbed Smart Glow was unearthed. It took the form of a ring of LEDs around the rear camera lens and promised to smarten up your notification lights and your selfies on future Samsung phones, but it seems there could be a lot more to it than was initially revealed.

According to SamMobile, Smart Glow will get smarter over time. The feature will apparently first launch on the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) with three functions, namely 'Priority alerts', 'Selfie assist' and 'Usage alerts'.

Priority alerts would allow users to assign colors to specific contacts, so you can see who's calling or messaging you without looking at the screen. Selfie assist would cause the LEDs to light up when a face is detected, and then automatically take a picture a couple of seconds later, making it easier to use the rear camera for selfies.

Finally, Usage alerts would light up in specific colors to show the battery or charging status of the phone.

Smartening up

So far, so similar to what we've already heard, but according to SamMobile these features will be further developed, with Selfie assist eventually helping your center your face by only lighting up parts of the ring when you're off to the side and Usage alerts would get additional alerts for storage, data and memory usage.

Whole new functions will apparently be added too, with a 'Health ring' using the phone's rear camera and LED flash to monitor your heart rate. The role of Smart Glow in this is unclear, but it could perhaps indicate when a reading is complete.

Then there's 'Weather ring', which would provide weather information by turning the ring a color that represents the current weather conditions when you shake the phone, though it's not clear how this will be any more useful than just looking out a window.

But taken together these features could make the Smart Glow a very strong addition. It's unlikely that modest hardware like the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) will get all of the additional functionality, but according to SamMobile the feature is expected to land on additional devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8.

So from early 2017 information on the current weather conditions (and lots of far more useful features) could be just a flip of your phone away.

Verizon has remote homes and businesses covered with new 4G LTE Network Extender

Although AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint (especially T-Mo) are all rapidly closing the gap to Verizon in terms of both cellular coverage and network reliability, there’s still no disputing the king. That said, Big Red has its problems in certain areas, with strong signal sometimes feeling like a utopian dream, not to mention the numerous independent reports claiming at least Magenta comfortably eclipses the overall market leader when it comes to download speeds. We don’t know about the latter, ...
