OnePlus will ‘look at’ touch latency issues soon, but only after rolling Nougat out

Just how serious is the touch latency situation on the OnePlus 3 and 3T? Well, it’s serious enough for company co-founder Carl Pei to feel the need, nay, obligation to formally address it on Twitter, but not so bad that it takes precedence over Android N-polishing work.

Nougat still “has higher priority”, with official, wide-scale OTA updates promised by the end of the year, especially given that “for its entire lifecycle, no one gave us this feedback for OP3, and nothing changed.”

Don’t worry, though, that doesn’t mean Pei is questioning the existence or gravity of the touch latency problem, which will be looked into at some point. Just not before Android 7.0 Nougat is ready for primetime on both the refreshed OnePlus 3T and original 3.

Remember, the two devices are due for simultaneous major and minor OS revisions starting with build N, last receiving separate OxygenOS makeovers during Turkey week. The 3T jumped to platform version 3.5.3 with “increased stability and various bug fixes”, “updated touch panel firmware and optimized touch precision”, as well as “updated GPS library and optimized location accuracy.”

The Snapdragon 820-powered OnePlus 3, meanwhile, was incrementally promoted to Marshmallow-based OxygenOS 3.2.8, adding among others 1080p 60fps video recording, “increased system stability”, and “general bug fixes.” So, yeah, the OEM isn’t perfect when it comes to software support, but we’ve certainly seen worse.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in disguise

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is no more, but those still yearning for a slice of premium phablet action could be in luck as the Meizu Pro 6 Plus has just been launched.

With a 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, Exynos 8890 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 12MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, fingerprint scanner and a heart rate monitor the spec sheet looks almost identical to the Note 7.

The Meizu Pro 6 Plus doesn’t come with an S Pen stylus alternative, and its styling is more iPhone 7 Plus than Note 7 – but there’s no doubting the similarity in specs, especially as it’s Samsung’s own chip powering the show.

The battery is a touch smaller on the Pro 6 Plus at 3,400mAh (the Note 7 is 3,500mAh), while the cameras front and back have a lesser aperture rating than the Samsung - we'd expect this is translate to poorer picture quality.

The Pro 6 Plus comes in 64GB and 128GB variants, while its vital statistics come in at 155.6 x 77.3 x 7.3mm and 158g. That makes it slightly taller and wider than the Note 7, but also thinner and lighter.

On screen things will certainly be different to Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, with Meizu’s new Flyme 6 OS sitting on top of Android which the firm claims has over 400 new features “ including a revamped picture capturing process and a reworked lost phone finding assistant.”

You'll be able to get the Meizu Pro 6 Plus from Amazon in the UK, but we're still waiting to hear how much it will set you back.

We have contacted Meizu for more information and will update this article once we've heard back.

Meizu m3x starts at around $250 with snazzy design, Helio P20 power, high-end camera

In case Meizu’s mid-range Android smartphone family didn’t feel convoluted enough, the Chinese OEM just took the wraps off the 5.5-inch m3x, joining the super-low-cost 5-inch m3 and m3s, slightly pricier 5.5-inch m3e, and jumbo-sized 6-inch m3 Max.

Clearly not as attractive for power users as the Pro 6 Plus, the Meizu m3x caters to budget-conscious fashionistas with a shiny (literally) glass back and ceramic crystal coating in eye-catching Pearl White, Phantom Blue, Gold and Obsidian Black colors.

The 2.5D curved display sports respectable Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) resolution, while an octa-core Helio P20 processor runs the hardware show in lieu of the m3 Max and m3e’s P10. You can opt for 32 or 64GB internal storage, and 3 or 4GB RAM, with pre-orders underway today in Meizu’s China homeland at 1,699 and 1,999 Yuan ($247 and $290) respectively.

Both m3x configurations of course pack the same rapid-charging 3200mAh battery, and believe it or not, they even borrow the ultra-high-end 12MP Sony IMX386 rear-facing camera sensor from the far costlier Pro 6 Plus.

The stellar bang for buck yuan of the Meizu m3x is consolidated by a 5MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture, USB Type-C port, blazing fast mTouch fingerprint scanner, 4G LTE connectivity, and 7.4mm wasp waist. Too bad this thing is also based on Marshmallow out the box.

Google Play apps can no longer fake it to make it

Filtering the good apps from the bad on Google Play can be hard enough when there are hundreds of thousands to choose from, but with some sporting fake reviews and ratings the challenge becomes even harder. Fortunately, Google is on the case.

The company has announced that it’s improved the ways that it identifies and removes fake reviews and ratings. It hasn’t said what those improvements are, but the end result will apparently be that it removes more fakes and does so with greater accuracy.

If you’re an app developer yourself, chances are you have nothing to worry about, but if you’re working with another person or company to promote your app Google advises that you check-in with them to ensure they’re not using fake, paid or incentivized reviews and ratings, and that they all come from genuine users.

Simply the best

Google plans to continue enhancing its systems, to further improve the accuracy and legitimacy of reviews and ratings, so you’ll know that 5-star Justin Bieber soundboard you’re considering really is worthy of 5 stars.

But if you need a little more help in finding the best apps we’re here for you, with our constantly updated lists of the best Android apps and the best free Android apps.

Probably the best ever LG G5 deal bundles the phone with $300 worth of accessories for $450

Forget $400, or even $400 with a $25 gift card, spare battery, charging cradle, and CAM Plus “LG Friend” thrown in. If you have $450 to spend, and didn’t pull the trigger on one of the world’s first modular smartphones during the extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday jamboree, the coolest, cheapest LG G5 bundle is now up for grabs over at B&H Photo Video.

The camera-specialized US retailer not only sells the controversial but impressive 5.3-inch Android powerhouse alongside a backup battery, charging cradle and CAM Plus module, also handing out free LG 360 VR headsets with orders placed in the next few hours. A couple of days, at best.

How much do you stand to save all in all? Well, let’s see. That “standard” G5 2800mAh battery you can pop right in for an extra 24 hours or so of autonomy normally costs $37.99. Then there’s the $39.99-worth “dual-function” charging cradle, $49.99 camera grip add-on, and last but certainly not least, $169.99 Gear VR and Daydream View contender with 6-axis motion tracking and 639 ppi dual display.

That brings the grand total of savings to nearly 300 bucks (more specifically $297.96), not to mention the unlocked LG G5 alone is a decent bargain at $449.99. 4G LTE connectivity, GSM and CDMA support, 32GB internal storage, microSD card slot, dual rear cameras, Snapdragon 820 power, 4GB RAM, and your choice of silver or titan paint jobs included.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus goes after Galaxy S7 with Exynos 8890 SoC, 5.7-inch Quad HD display

If you can’t beat them, join them. Just as rumoredseveral months back, Meizu wraps up its 2016 flagship smartphone lineup with a refreshed, oversized Pro 6 powered by the same processor used on the uber-successful Samsung Galaxy S7 and ill-fated Note 7.

Before you cry copycat, it’s worth pointing out that Meizu and Samsung have partnered a number of times in recent years, and the chaebol’s Exynos 8890 SoC is also adopted inside the Pro 6 Plus with its maker’s express approval.

That said, the Meizu Pro 6 Plus hardly feels like an original product, even featuring both a fingerprint sensor and built-in heart rate monitor, not to mention “3D Press” technology, aka 3D Touch or Force Touch.

Coated in gray, silver or champagne gold, the new 5.7-incher looks extremely similar to the 5.2-inch Pro 6 on the outside, bumping up the screen resolution however to 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, and adding Always-on tricks to the equation.

Robust and slim, at 7.3mm, the Meizu Pro 6 Plus flaunts a respectably large 3400mAh battery, which it apparently can charge up to the 60 percent mark in just half an hour. The 12MP rear-facing camera borrows Sony’s IMX386 CMOS sensor from the 5.5-inch MX6, though Samsung’s “upgraded ISP and Optical Image Stabilization” should now make it Meizu’s best ever snapper.

On the software side of things, the 5.7-incher runs the all-new Flyme OS 6 platform with “One Mind”, Meizu’s “very own Artificial Intelligence engine”, but unfortunately, only Android Marshmallow roots. Other features include 4GB RAM, 64 and 128GB internal storage options, Hi-Fi audio, global LTE support, and USB Type-C, with domestic pricing set at $435 (CNY 3,000) and up.

Sony rolls out Android Nougat for Xperia X Performance

After a comprehensive tease and a month-long proving program, the betas have ended for the Xperia X Performance.

Unlocked single-SIM and dual-SIM units of the Sony phone are seeing updates push out for Android 7.0. Firmware version 39.2.A.0.327 will take its time rolling out.

The Nougat update is behind the schedule as promised by Sony, though it remains true that the X Performance is one of the first to receive it. The Xperia XZ should be next.

This report of the roll-out is based on several tips into Xperia Blog.

Lenovo ZUK edge expected out next week

Lenovo subsidiary ZUK is preparing for a new smartphone launch next week and Chinese social media is abuzz about it leaking out.

ZUK CEO Chang Cheng posted a few teasers for what customers might expect in the box for the ZUK Edge — the contents look to even include a case for the phone, sheathed in optical gloss.

lenovo-zuk-edge-1 lenovo-zuk-edge-2 lenovo-zuk-edge-box lenovo-zuk-edge-box-b lenovo-zuk-a lenovo-zuk-edge-3

But we do have close-up views leaked out of another Weibo channel and it shows off a front-facing fingerprint sensor, a single camera with focus and flash modules, a headphone jack, USB-C port and a single, bottom-firing speaker. Confirmed is a 5.5-inch display.

Other rumors bring in a Snapdragon 821 with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, the display having full HD resolution and 13-megapixel and 8-megapixel cameras back and front.

Chang only mentioned a vague launch frame for next week, so we’ll probably get a date dropped in soon.

No appeal for Samsung in Apple patent verdict, it must pay $120 million

The lawsuit filed by Apple against Samsung over patents for “quick links,” “slide to unlock,” and autocorrect has reached an end. Well, only if Samsung doesn’t ask the Supreme Court to look into this case, too.

The chaebol lost its bid for appeal to fend off $119.6 million in damages. The full US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit applied this verdict after a three-judge panel found that Apple actually owed some money to Samsung.

No comment was attached to the rejection for an en banc (full court) review of the judgment.

The Supreme Court has agreed to take on another Apple v. Samsung case on the design of their phones.

Sky Mobile launching in UK with data rollover for three years

British satellite broadcaster Sky is adding on spectrum in the cellular sector to offer Sky Mobile. The service incentivises customers already with Sky TV and have a Sky+ box.

The halo feature of the data plans is that any leftover data for the month can be rolled over for up to three years — back when T-Mobile offered finite data tiers, it would allow unused data to carry on for only a year. Families with up to five lines can save together and share unused data as needed.

Plus, Sky+ subscribers can also sync show recordings from their box onto their phones — either by streaming or downloading for playback. Up to four devices will be allowed to Sync up in a household. Those with Sky Q boxes will get Sync next year.

Plans are available at 1GB for £10 per month, 3GB for £15 or 5GB for £20. Saved data can be applied 1GB at a time. They can also switch between plans every month. Per diem, texting and calls can come at 10p a minute or message. There’s also an unlimited call and text package for £10 per month, but free for Sky TV subscribers. Consumers are signed onto a 12-month contract.

You can pre-register for the service here. First SIMs should come out around Christmastime. Sky Mobile is a O2 MVNO.

iPhone for the holidays: Survey shows it’s still the most wanted gift

It may not be as hard to find as an NES Classic Edition, but Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus may remain a hot commodity throughout this holiday season.

Regardless of its incremental improvements over the iPhone 6 and controversial removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, Apple's handsets appear in high demand among wish lists nationwide, according to a survey conducted by investment firm Piper Jaffray.

The survey - which polled 1,000 individuals in the US for their most wished-for holiday gifts - put the iPhone at the very top, with 7.2% of the entire sample wanting one of Apple's handsets.

Piper Jaffray's managing director, Gene Munster, also points out that the results for the iPhone were 2% higher than last year, suggesting that the interest in Apple's smartphones are still going strong, despite a recent decline in sales.

Other items on the list included the MacBook, Xbox One, smartwatches, and the PS4, though all of those combined didn't even come close to the iPhone's share of the chart.

Where can I get one?

Wait lists for the iPhone 7 are nowhere as bad as they were at launch, but with Black Friday and Cyber Monday come and gone, getting one for cheap this holiday could be tough.

That said, Walmart is offering $150 off the older-but-still-perfectly good iPhone 6, and is discounting more than twice that on a refurbished model.

Best Buy is also offering a $100 credit on a new iPhone purchased with select Beats Wireless headphones - which you'll want anyway, considering the whole "no headphone jack" thing.

While we can see iPhones being 'The Hot Thing' this Christmas, it should be noted that Piper Jaffray's survey isn't exactly ironclad. First, a sample size of 1,000 people is relatively small and prone to bias.

Secondly, while Munster mentions the iPhone 7 specifically, the survey just says "iPhone." This could mean the people surveyed were interested in any make of the handset - or possibly just smartphones in general. (Kinda like how our parents refer to every kind of tablet as 'an iPad.')

We have reached out to Piper Jaffray to learn more about the survey and how it was conducted, and will update this story when more details emerge.
