Google Music Play is now the default music app on the Samsung S8 and S8 Plus

With the launch of the Galaxy S8, Samsung has announced that it has partnered  with Google to make Google Music Play the default music app on the device. This is the start of a long-term partnership, meaning that moving forward all Samsung phones and tablets will have Google Music Play as the default.

There's a lot of competition in the music app market, with Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and others all trying to win users over. Google has played a strong hand here – not only has it announced this partnership to coincide with the launch of one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of the year, it has included some pretty enticing extras to sweeten the deal.

Users who've never tried Google Play Music before are eligible for a three-month free trial, giving them access to the 40-million song back catalogue at Google’s disposal. And as Google is YouTube’s parent company, a Google Play Music subscription includes access to YouTube Red, the ad-free version of YouTube.

What’s more, in order to ensure that users can transfer all of their current music collection over, Google is offering double the usual amount of cloud storage, for free – Samsung users will be able to upload 100,000 of their own tracks to Google Play’s cloud storage so that they can enjoy them anywhere.

Bixby integration

According to The Verge, this native integration means that when Samsung’s digital assistant Bixby launches later this year you'll be able to launch Google Music Play directly from Bixby, just by giving it a command to play a track.

This would be an improvement over Google's virtual assistant that's currently on the S8, where if you ask it to play you a track it asks you to select an application to use. Hopefully you'll still be able to choose a different app if you want, otherwise users who don't use Google Play Music will be stuck with Bixby pushing an app on them that they don't want.

Speaking of different choices, if all of this isn’t for you, and you’d rather just have the basic Samsung music app, it is still available, and just needs to be downloaded from the Play Store.

Moto X4 release date, news and rumors

Update: An invite sent out by Motorola suggests that the Moto X4 could be announced on September 2, while a new pricing rumor points to an affordable price.

A couple of years ago the Moto X range was Motorola’s flagship line, and while it suddenly stopped to make room for the Moto Z range it seems the X isn’t dead, with the Moto X 2017 now the subject of regular leaks and rumors.

Though it may have a new name, as according to well-known tipster Evan Blass, the device is going to be called the Moto X4, which will make it easier to distinguish from previous years at least.

But it seems this is no longer a flagship, with the upcoming Moto X 2017 set to slot in below the Moto Z and the Moto Z2 Force.

It could still be worth getting excited about though, as there’s talk of a dual-lens camera and solid specs, likely combined with an affordable price tag. Here’s everything we know about the Moto X 2017 so far.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next entry in Motorola's dormant X range
  • When is it out? Possibly September 2
  • What will it cost? It's likely to have a mid-range price

Moto X4 release date

Will we be saying hello to the Moto X4 on September 2?

The Moto X4 might be announced on September 2, as a live stream invite shared by the company includes the words 'hellomoto X'. That's a date that would make sense too, as it's during IFA 2017 - a trade show where a number of phones will likely be announced.

The only other release date rumor so far comes from a source who apparently has knowledge of Motorola's plans. They say the Moto X4 will land in quarter 4, in time for holiday shopping.

Motorola has also confirmed that the X range is “alive and well”, while leaked images show a device that looks almost finished, and a phone believed to be the Moto X4 has even passed through the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) so we might not be waiting long.

Moto X4 screen

Hottest leaks:

  • A 5.2-inch screen
  • A 1080p resolution

The latest leaks point to a 5.2-inch 1080p screen on the Moto X4, and that lines up with images we've seen. In fact, Motorola's official Iranian distributor has even revealed that the phone has a 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 screen with a pixel density of 424 pixels per inch.

Several leaked images have now shown what’s believed to be the Moto X 2017 in someone’s hand, and from that it’s clear that this isn’t a massive phone, but not a tiny one either.

It’s hard to be too precise, but we’d guess from these that the screen is in the range of 5.2-5.5 inches - probably the low end of that range, given that elsewhere we've heard it's 5.2 inches.

It’s also almost certainly going to have a 1080 x 1920 resolution, given that even the lower-end Moto G5 does and that the next step up (QHD) is still the preserve of flagship phones.

TechRadar's take: A 5.2-inch 1080 x 1920 screen is looking likely at the moment.

Moto X4 design

Hottest leaks:

  • A glass or metal shell
  • A 3.5mm headphone port
  • Water resistance

We've now seen an almost official image of the Moto X4, as Motorola's official Iranian distributor has shared two photos of the phone, showing off a shiny black back and dual-lens camera jutting out.

The shots are similar to other recent leaked images, which this time also show the front of the phone, revealing a shiny back, which appears to be glass but could be polished metal, a dual-lens camera and large bezels above and below the screen.

However, they're at odds with earlier leaked images (below), from which it looks as though the Moto X 2017 is probably made from metal, though they look suspiciously like the now-announced Moto G5S.

The back is plain, with antenna bands near the top and bottom and a Motorola logo in the center, while the bottom edge has a speaker grille and the top edge has a 3.5mm headphone port, which is worth mentioning, since the Moto Z doesn’t have one.

Shown off in a leak from 9to5Google, the new Moto X appears to add glass into the mix, too. "3D" glass, to be specific. It looks to give off a curved look, much like the LG G6.

Next up, it will apparently be waterproof with a rating of IP68, which is always a welcomed feature in a smartphone.

You can also just about make out a home button beneath the screen, which likely also houses a fingerprint scanner. It’s a familiar design, but one that’s closer to the lower-end G range than the high-end Z range.

And we've heard similar things from a source who claims the Moto X4 will have an aluminum build, a front-facing fingerprint scanner and IP68 certification.

And thanks to an FCC listing for the X4 found by The Leaker, we know that it will have dimensions of 148 x 73mm. That would make it ever so slightly smaller than the 150 x 73.5mm Moto G5S.

TechRadar's take: The latest leaked images showing a shiny finish look convincing, especially as some of them come from a fairly official source.

Moto X4 camera and battery

Hottest leaks:

  • A dual-lens camera
  • A front-facing flash

All the leaked images we’ve seen so far show a dual-lens camera on the Moto X 2017, however, while many show the dual-LED flash module below the lens, apparently it will actually be above according to reliable tipster @evleaks, as seen in the image below.

A source claims it will be a 12MP and 8MP pairing, which makes sense, since the single-lens Moto G5 Plus has a 12MP one and the Moto Z has a 13MP one.

Then again, a rather more official leak from Motorola's Iranian distributor points to dual 12MP cameras, along with a 16MP one on the front.

However, there's no news yet on what the dual-lenses will be capable of - for example whether they allow for lossless zoom, wide-angle shots or something else entirely.

But we can look to the Moto Z2 Force for a clue, as that phone has arrived with a dual-lens camera of its own, where one lens is monochrome, allowing for true black and white shots without a filter. It's also capable of creating a bokeh effect - where the background is blurred.

The same source as above claims that the Moto X4 will have a 16MP front-facing camera, and based on the leaked images the front camera looks to have a flash, just like on the Moto Z and Moto Z Play.

As for the battery, one leak points to a 3,800mAh one, but more recently we've heard more than once that it will just be 3,000mAh. The latter seems more likely, but Motorola has packed big batteries into its phones before, so we wouldn't completely count out the former.

TechRadar's take: All the evidence points to a dual-lens camera, while the battery is likely to be around 3,000mAh.

Moto X4 OS and power

Hottest leaks:

  • 3 or 4GB of RAM
  • Snapdragon 630 chipset

One leaked image supposedly showing the Moto X 2017 lists it as having 3GB of RAM, while a more recent Weibo leak shows 4GB, so it’s unclear whether one of these is wrong or whether the phone will be launched in multiple configurations.

However, while both images list a mid-range Snapdragon 625 chipset, we've recently learned that, in fact, it might be stocked with the recently-debuted Snapdragon 660. If so, the new X will be a league above the G series that released in the past few months.

We've also seen that listed, along with 3GB of RAM, in a Geekbench benchmark.

But another leak points to an octa-core Snapdragon 630 chipset with all eight cores clocked at 2.2GHz. This would apparently be paired with 4GB of RAM.

The same source claims the Moto X4 will have 64GB of storage and a microSD card slot.

Mention of a 2.2GHz octa-core chipset and 3GB or 4GB of RAM has also been spotted in a photo, shared by Motorola's official Iranian distributor.

As for the operating system, the Moto X 2017 is sure to run Android 7 Nougat (more specifically Android 7.1 according to one source), unless Android O is out by then, which we doubt it will be. Whatever version it runs will probably be more or less stock, as tends to be the way with Motorola phones.

TechRadar’s take: A Snapdragon 630 and 3GB or 4GB of RAM is looking very likely. If only one model of the Moto X 2017 is launched we’d expect it will have 4GB of RAM, as otherwise its specs will be almost identical to those of the Moto G5 Plus.

Moto X4 price

The latest price rumor suggests the Moto X4 will start at $349.99 (around £270/AU$440), rising to $399.99 (roughly £310/AU$500). That's probably for 32GB and 64GB storage sizes respectively.

That's in line with an earlier price rumor, which puts the Moto X4 at roughly $400 (around £305/AU$500) and that makes sense, as based on the leaked specs we imagine the Moto X 2017 will slot in just above the Moto G5 Plus – but well below the Moto Z and Moto Z2. It will probably also either be lower-end than or in line with the Moto Z Play.

The Moto G5 Plus starts at $229/£249 (around AU$300), so expect a slightly higher price than that, maybe in the region of $300/£300/AU$350. Though if it replaces the Moto Z Play in Motorola’s line-up it could cost more like $449/£369 (around AU$625).

Honor 9 release date, news and features

Update: The Honor 9 has officially been announced, even though its US and UK release date remains an open question. We at least know all about its specs.

Like the Honor 8 we liked last year, the new phone will have a reflective body to it, letting light shine off of the back like no other phone you've seen before.

Honor 9 will have a 5.15-inch screen with a Full HD (1080p) resolution, the newer Huawei Kirin 960 octa-core chipset and 6GB of RAM.

It'll come with 64GB of internal storage and can be expanded with another 256GB via a microSD card. The battery size has increased with a 3,200mAh capacity battery.

The Honor 9 camera gives you a pair on the back, with a 12MP + 20MP sensor, plus there's an 8MP front-facing camera.

It launches China first, and while there are no plans to bring it to the US and UK just yet, that could change later this year.

Original article...

The Honor 8 Pro has only recently launched, yet the next numbered entry in Huawei’s spin-off range might be just months away.

Already leaked images are giving us an idea of what to expect, and you’ll find them below along with our expert analysis of the latest news.

Below you'll find all the latest news and rumors about Honor's flagship phone, plus we've also included what we'd like to see from the new phone too.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next Honor handset
  • When is it out? Possibly July 2017
  • What will it cost? Maybe around $400/£370/AU$530

Honor 9 release date and price

Huawei - Honor's parent company - has confirmed the Honor 9 will be launching at an event in Shanghai on June 17. The Honor 8 launched in July 2016, so the flagship Honor is arriving a little bit early this year.

The Honor 9 release date for the US, UK and Australia is currently unclear, but Twitter leaker Roland Quandt has claimed it will launch on June 27 at an event in Berlin.

That Berlin event is yet to be confirmed by Huawei, but we'll be sure to update when we hear more from Honor.

As for the price, there’s every chance that will be similar to the Honor 8’s, putting the Honor 9 at around $399/£369 (roughly AU$530), though that would put it in the slightly odd position of being cheaper than the £474.99 (around $590, AU$770) Honor 8 Pro.

Honor 9 news and rumors

The Honor 9 may be dropping the 3.5mm headphone jack, so you'll have to use Bluetooth or USB-C connector headsets to listen to audio privately on your phone.

Renders from The Tech Point show the edges of the phone where there's only a USB-C connector and no sign of a physical headphone port.

Credit: The Tech Point

Another render from The Tech Point and two other images have leaked out  showing us the phone from front and back in blue, black and silver.

From these we can see that it’s got a similar design to the Honor 8 (though oddly a very different look to the Honor 8 Pro) with a shiny, reflective glass back and likely a metal frame.

Like the Honor 8, there’s also a dual-lens camera on the back with a dual-LED flash.

There’s no word on what spec it is, but we’d imagine it will at least match the Honor 8’s 12MP one and will probably work in the same way, with one color sensor and the other monochrome (black and white), allowing you to combine image data from them both for more light and sharper shots.

The main difference from the Honor 8 comes in the form of the fingerprint scanner, which here is on the front of the phone below the screen, while the Honor 8 had it on the back.

Honor 9: what we want to see

We know what we want to see from the Honor 9 - these five things top our wish list.

1. Better software

However good Huawei and Honor’s hardware is it’s always slightly let down by the Emotion UI software the company uses.

Its biggest fault is the lack of an app drawer, but it also splits the notification shade in two, to no discernible benefit, and tends to include an abundance of bloat.

We’d love to see all of this fixed for the software’s outing on the Honor 9. Or better yet, for Emotion UI to be ditched altogether in place of stock Android, but that’s little more than wishful thinking.

2. Optical image stabilization

For an upper mid-range phone the Honor 8 has a strong camera, which stands out through its extra lens, but neither it nor the Honor 8 Pro have optical image stabilization, and adding this would help keep shots smooth and steady.

It’s not something we necessarily expect from a mid-range handset, but for the camera to continue to be a key strength of the Honor range it’s an addition that would really help.

3. Water resistance

The Honor 9 is expected to follow in the footsteps of the Honor 8 with a shiny, eye-catching glass finish. It’s a great look, especially for a phone that’s not quite a flagship, but while the looks are sorted the durability could be improved, particularly when it comes to water and dust resistance, as the Honor 8 has none.

We’d like to see some waterproofing added to the Honor 9, especially as this is becoming an increasingly common smartphone feature, though given that even the Huawei P10 doesn’t have any we wouldn’t hold our breath.

4. Stereo sound

Although the Honor 8 has a decent selection of specs it doesn’t have decent sound, with just a single unimpressive speaker.

For the Honor 9 we’d like to see – or hear – stereo sound, from superior speakers, so that media isn’t totally reliant on headphones to be enjoyable.

5. A bigger screen

At 5.2 inches the Honor 8 isn’t tiny, but it is at the smaller end of screen size now, with even many budget phones packing a 5.5-inch display.

Of course, not everyone wants a huge screen, but pushing the Honor 9 up to around 5.5 inches would keep it manageable, while giving you a bigger canvas to view your apps, games and videos.

The best Samsung Galaxy S8 cases

While the Samsung Galaxy S8 has been succeeded by the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10, and soon the Galaxy S11 too, it's still a reliable smartphone – so make sure to put a Galaxy S8 case on your handset to keep it serving you well.

If you're looking to protect your phone and your wallet, Black Friday 2019 and Cyber Monday 2019 are at the end of November, and the deals season that ensues will surely see all kinds of phone accessories discounted. That means your Samsung Galaxy S8 case might be even more affordable.

TechRadar is set to cover Black Friday in great detail, so we'll bring you all the deals. When the November 29 date gets closer, check back to our Black Friday homepage (maybe bookmark it now) so you can find all the best deals and discounts.

One of the nicer features of the Galaxy S8 is its stunning edge-to-edge display that stretches over the phone's sides. Naturally, that larger display is also more vulnerable to drops since the angled screen is more likely to make contact with the ground than other devices. A bad spill could doom your pristine screen.

These are products that we haven't had in our test labs, but based on our experts' opinion and knowledge of the most reputable brands around, we think these are worth looking at.

Our selections, ranked with newer additions at the top, take into account online reviews, brand reputation, product capability or unique features to help you pick through the maze of choices available to you.

Best Samsung Galaxy S8 cases at a glance:

Spigen has spread its low-cost Tough Armor series to plenty of phones, and it's at home here for a Samsung phone that has been surpassed by newer devices. It's an affordable case with a couple layers of protection, providing basic safety for those who don't need to splurge on their older phone.

The Tough Armor has a flexible TPU body that wraps around the device along with a polycarbonate shell, which also houses the wee kickstand for propping up your phone to watch media. You can pick one up for just under $17 (£13, AU$23) on Amazon here.

Vena's vCommute is a rugged take on the wallet case, offering more protection (and a grittier look) for anyone who wants to carry cards around with their phone. It's got a typical flexible TPU and polycarbonate combo frame to handle drops and scuffs.

Unlike other wallet cases, the vCommute's card pocket can be completely enclosed by a cover. This layer is articulated, allowing you to turn it into an impromptu stand - and it's also magnetic, and allegedly works with appropriate car mounts.

You can get the vCommute for just under $20 ( £15, AU$27) on Amazon here.

This Samsung Galaxy S8 Super Thin case is for you if you're even the least bit reluctant to cover up your new S8. Coming in a few different colors, each adds a nice touch to the S8's forward-thinking design.

Its easy application and low profile makes it an easy choice for minimalists, though at $25, it's not the cheapest case given its simple build. However, if form takes higher priority over function, Peel's case is exactly what you need.

Check out the Super Thin case by Peel right here.

This Samsung Galaxy S8 case has a translucent cover envelopes the entire phone and provides a see-through window for the time and date, incoming calls, music controls and lock screen notifications. On top of that, it doubles as a stand so you can easily watch movies in landscape mode.

This is Samsung’s fun Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus case that shines LED lights through the translucent cover. There are 54 special icons and you can have limited control over the phone without having to open up the cover.

This is the most standard case Samsung makes. It has a smooth, rubberized feel on the outside and a microfiber interior to keep your phone scratch-free. It protects your phone and gives you several bright color options.

Samsung’s premium Alcantara case feels like suede with a soft, textured material that extends all the way around the phone. You even get a slight lip around the display in order to avoid scratching the front glass when the phone is face down.

Let your Samsung Galaxy S8 true color and slim design shine through this clear case. It's 0.8mm thin, so there’s not much extra bulk to this bumper case. It's protection without the distraction.Samsung Clear Cover

Defender to the left, Commute to the right

Otterbox makes heavy-duty Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus cases, so you’re getting drop protection from the incredibly rugged Defender and almost as durable Commuter series. Both have a polycarbonate shell and synthetic rubber slipcover.

Incipio already has 22 Galaxy S8 cases available (and another 22 for the Galaxy S8 Plus), so here are our favorites: The Carnaby has a soft fabric back that reminds of us Incipio’s stylish backpacks; Stowaway gives you a pocket for up to three credit cards; and Haven provides protection from six-foot drops. Not enough? Incipio also sells two different glitter cases.

There are four Caseology Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus cases, and they’re all fairly inexpensive. The Caseology Coastline is the company’s basic clear polycarbonate case for minimalists, the Parallax case provide stylish grooves in addition to protection, the Vault I case is meant to be ‘slim armor’ and the Legion case is all about offering rugged protection without compromise.

Speck is best at offering Samsung cases with slim designs and just enough protection to get you through your first year or two with the phone (until you trade it in). We like the new Presidio case for exactly that reason. It takes on a slim design, yet offers drop and bezel screen protection. The Speck Presidio Grip, meanwhile, it meant for more impact and, with a no-slip back, hopefully fewer drops.

You can find some fun cases among Casemate’s Galaxy S8 collection already. Skip the ‘Naked Tough Clear’ case and go for one of the three ‘Naked Tough Waterfall’ cases. They send glitter cascading through clear cases, just in case a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch phone didn’t stand out already. Also fun are Casemate’s Karat cases that stick various shiny metal accents (like gold flakes or mother of pearl and silver) inside a case – they just don’t move around.

Lifeproof’s Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus cases bring your Android phone up to army grade standards thanks to the military standard 810G-516.6. It’s ready for rough and tumble action and extends the device’s IP68 waterproof capabilities. The company even claims to give it snowproof and drop proof capabilities to boot.

There are six Samsung Galaxy S8 cases from Tech21, with the cheapest being the Pure Clear case and three Evo cases: Evo Active Edition, Evo Check, and Evo Tactical. Tech21’s two card-carrying cases are more more expensive, the Evo Wallet folio case and Evo Go case that has a trap door for your card carrying needs.

If you want your Galaxy S8 protected, the Spigen Slim Armor CS case will do the job. Soft and hard plastics combine to keep the phone safe from falls. Even though it’s a bit bulky, it can save you some pocket space by carrying two cards, so you may not need to always bring a wallet everywhere you go.

This case can fully replace most wallets, more card storage than anyone should reasonably need. It has nine card slots and three cash slots, so you can keep this case loaded with ways to pay. And if you use Samsung Pay, keeping your phone in this case will mean it’s holding one more payment method.

For anyone looking to ditch the wallet and carry just a few cards around with their Galaxy S8, the Maxboost Wallet Case is a good fit. It fits the phone into a simple holder, and closes up folio-style. The card slots are perfect for a credit card, debit card and license.

The leather flip wallet case from Ocase will offer you protection for the Galaxy S8 while also letting you store multiple credit cards and cash. It includes a magnetic clasp to help it stay closed, and has the necessary cutouts for you to use your camera and fingerprint scanner. There are a variety of color options, and even models with a detachable phone holders.

See the Ocase leather flip wallet case at Amazon here.

Enjoying Samsung's visual design and protecting it from destruction are hard to balance. The Zizo Bolt Galaxy S8 case leans heavily in favor of the latter. It features multi-layer protection and a screen protector to make sure a simple accident won't  do serious damage. Most importantly, it offers military-grade drop certification to protect your Galaxy S8 from up to 12-foot falls.

See the Zizo Bolt case on Amazon here.

We’ll continue to update this page with more cases as they become available to us.
