Top smartphones of 2017 with big batteries

Modern day smartphones come with a variety of features appealing to a wide range of customers. But if there’s one feature that grabs the most eyeballs, it’s the size of a battery. Keeping this in mind, manufacturers have been pushing phones with massive batteries for quite some time now. It’s mostly a coincidence that a majority of these phones belong to the mid-ranged or budget segment. Well, let’s have a look at some of these smartphones that are available in India right now.

After receiving warm response for the existing Redmi phones in India, Xiaomi introduced its plus sized Mi Max 2, which packs a massive 5300mAh battery to power it up. As per the company claims, the battery offers 18 hours of video playback 57 hours of talk time and over 31 days of standby. Not only the battery is big, but the phone also comes with huge 6.44-inch full HD display which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3.

The smartphone along with a mammoth sized battery and display offers decent power to sail you through your daily tasks. In fact, it can be a great smartphone for multimedia enthusiasts with features like dual speaker audio. It comes packed in a attractive looking metal unibody shell, which looks like a OnePlus 5 rip off, but still manages to add that premium feel to the phone.

So if you are in for a phone that has a gigantic battery with a big vibrant display and good performance, the Mi Max 2 can be a good choice. Mi Max 2 will be available across all online and offline partners of Xioami, along with mi.com and Mi Home from July 27.

The latest entrant in the list, Gionee A1 Plus, comes with a plus size battery and display. It features a 6-inch full HD which offers great video watching and multimedia experience to the users. To support this, the phone comes with a huge 4550mAh battery which provides sufficient power which will sail you easily through the day.

While the phone offers great battery life, its size and weight might disappoint the users who love carrying a handy phone. Considering the price range, you can also opt for Honor 8 Pro and Moto Z2 Play but if you want to have similar features at relatively low cost, then you can go for Mi Max 2.

Launched in September 2017, the Gionee M7 Power sports a 6-inch full HD+ FullView IPS display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The screen is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 3 on the top. The highlight of the phone is its 5000mAh battery which offers tons of power to the phone.

It is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 435 chipset which is coupled with 4GB RAM. The 64GB inbuilt storage is expandable up to 256GB.

The phone is available on Amazon in Black and Gold colour variants.

Honor recently launched the Pro version of its existing flagship Honor 8 in India. Named as Honor 8 Pro, the smartphone comes with 5.7-inch full HD display and a 4000mAh battery, which is one of the highlights of this smartphone.

The smartphone is close to perfect in terms of features and performance, but it misses the X-factor that could help it stand apart from the crowd. But we cannot ignore its stunning design and the amount of power it packs inside, backed by a sizeable battery.

Priced at Rs 29,999, the Honor 8 Pro is exclusively available at Amazon India.

For just Rs 9,999, Redmi Note 4 has redefined the hardware capabilities on an affordable handset. It looks and feels like a much more solid, with an attractive good-looking aluminium build, smooth performance and great battery life.

Its camera is capable of taking decent shots, its fingerprint sensor works well, and the MIUI is a genuinely decent enhancement of the stock Android operating system.

The Moto E4 Plus is the latest addition to this list. The smartphone is the first to feature a fingerprint sensor to the E- series. The highlight of the phone is its huge 5,000 mAh non-removable battery, which provides tons of power and can last more than a day even with aggressive usage. So, if you are a busy smartphone user tired of charging your phone multiple times a day, this handset can fix your battery concerns.

There is also something for the selfie lovers. The company has worked on the 5MP front camera of the, coupled with a LED flash. The all-metal design gives it a svelte look and the curved back makes it ergonomic, allowing it to slide easily into your pocket.

The Lenovo K8 Note starts from Rs. 12,999. Well, this is not the only phone coming in this price range. The Moto G5S and Moto G5 also falls in this category, but if compared on the basis of processors then these phones may not stand at par with this flagship. The handset would have got tough competition from the Xiaomi Redmi Pro if it was launched in India. This phone also comes with a deca-core processor and is expected to come in October in India.

We have already seen smartphones having hexa-core and octa-core processors in them. But, with a deca-core processor things are a little different. Packed with a deca-core MediaTek Helio X23 processor inside with 4GB RAM, the Lenovo K8 Note is the phone made for multi-tasking where it can perform a number of tasks altogether without giving a chance to complain.

The Redmi Note 4 was originally launched in China as the Redmi 4X, it comes in 2GB, 3GB and 4GB RAM variants with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of internal storage respectively. The Snapdragon 435 running at its heart makes it a decent performer for basic to moderate tasks.

For those who find it uneasy using a 5.5-inch screen and want a perfect alternate for a Redmi Note 4 or a Moto G5 Plus, the Redmi 4 can serve all your needs. The only issue with the Redmi devices is the supply, which Xiaomi says it's trying to improve.

Samsung has seriously upped its game when it comes to mid-rangers and budget devices. The Galaxy A9 Pro is a testament to that. Featuring a Super AMOLED display accompanied by a 5,000mAh battery, this is a truly unique offering.

The phone is also packing a 16MP camera on the back, making it a very capable camera phone. The phone is available in Black, Gold, and White variants from both Amazon and Flipkart. It seems like the Gold variant is the cheapest via both retailers, while the Black and White models are slightly more expensive. The handset is priced at Rs 26,900.

Launched not too long ago, the Moto C Plus comes with a fairly attractive hardware, even for a budget device of this caliber. Moto has focused heavily on the mid-ranged market segment in the past and the company continues to do so with the newer breed of handsets.

The highlight of the Moto C Plus is the 4,000mAh battery under the hood. The device also comes with a 5-inch HD (1280x720) display, Android 7.0 Nougat, an 8MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, and 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage. The handset can be snatched up from Flipkart for Rs 6,990.

ASUS has somewhat confused the market with three devices bearing almost the same moniker. This one, however, is significantly different compared to its namesakes. The device comes with a 5,000mAh battery under the hood, coupled with a 5.2-inch HD display, an 8MP camera on the front, and the octa-core Mediatek MT6750 SoC. The handset is currently selling through Flipkart and Amazon for roughly about Rs 14,500.

This Android Game Boy case proves Nintendo needs to do mobile gaming differently

Games like Super Mario Run, Pokemon Magikarp Jump and Fire Emblem Heroes aren’t giving people everything they want from Nintendo games on mobile.

People are enjoying those games - titles like Pokemon Go are innovative and pushing what we expect from mobile games - but Nintendo should go one step further and offer retro Game Boy games directly on your phone.

The internet is alight right now with hype for a Nintendo Game Boy case that attaches to your Android phone and allows you to play cartridge games with the top of your phone’s display.

The genuine excitement from fans for this device – which you can pre-order now for £59.99 (about $78, AU$100) from Funstock Retro – is the only reason it has been created.

Originally the Smart Boy case started out as an April Fools Joke created by accessory manufacturer Hyperkin. Now just over a year later, the company has created the actual case itself and made it compatible with the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Other phones with 5.2-inch to 6-inch displays and a USB-C port at the bottom will also work, but the smaller flagship from Samsung will offer the optimum experience.

The case looks fine, but it’s a complicated system for you to then be able to play cartridge games on your phone. It’s similar to playing on an actual Game Boy Color in terms of the size of the device and taking the case and cartridges around with your isn’t going to make for the most portable gaming experience.

Nintendo can learn from this excitement though. People do really want to be able to play early Pokemon and other Game Boy games directly on their phone.

It is possible to play retro Nintendo games on your phone using an emulator – something Nintendo won’t benefit from at all – but that’s a legally sketchy area and isn’t as simple as paying for a game or two from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Instead, Nintendo should offer a few of the original Game Boy Color games people want to play on the respective mobile stores.

This won’t eat into games such as Pokemon Go or Super Mario Run. Both of those titles offer an entirely different experience to most original Game Boy titles, plus the former is a free-to-play game.

Now especially feels like the perfect time for Nintendo to make that jump.

The release of the NES Classic Mini and now the upcoming SNES Classic Mini shows the company has interest in retro gaming and bringing back some of its vintage games to new and old audiences alike... so why can't that be on mobile?

At a time when Sega has released its own titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Kid Chameleon and Phantasy Star II onto mobile platforms, it feels like we're a step closer to Nintendo finally biting the bullet and deciding to enter the mobile gaming market with its older titles.

I don't want Nintendo to stop experimenting with its new mobile titles like Pokemon Go or Super Mario Run... I just want to be able to play the original Pokemon games on my smartphone without having to take along a huge case for £59.99 (about $78, AU$100).

In keeping with tradition, Sony goes to IFA 2017 for the likely launch of its next flagship(s)

Sony already promised a couple more high-end smartphones this year, and where could they be unveiled if not at IFA Berlin?

Best budget smartphones in India under Rs 10,000 for February 2020

The Indian budget smartphone segment is one fire, with decreasing differences between them and those slightly more expensive. The shorter product refresh cycles have also made consumers very fortunate to always get the latest possible specifications at never-before-seen prices. Performance, battery life and camera features have taken massive strides.

As a result, there are several great options when it comes to phones under Rs 10,000. In such a scenario, finding the best phone that suits your needs while still offering great value for money can be a bit of a task.

Worry not, though, if you want to know what are the best phones under Rs 10,000 in India, we are here with a few answers.

Xiaomi Redmi 8A Dual is one of the most affordable smartphones by Xiaomi with 5,000mAh battery, dual-camera setup, new mesh textured design, fast charging support, Gorilla Glass 5 layer and more, in a compact 188-gram body.

This phone has been designed for entry-level users or people looking for a secondary phone. With Snapdragon 439 onboard, you can expect a decent performance and 18W fast charging support means the phone can top-up much faster than before. It is priced starting at Rs 6,499 in India.

Realme C3

The Realme C3 is quite possibly the most powerful phone you can get under Rs 10,000, powered by the all-new MediaTek Helio G70 gaming chipset. It is paired with up to 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of storage.

It also focuses on media consumption, with a big 6.52-inch HD+ display with a small notch and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The battery, which is rated at 5,000mAh, should easily last for a day. The Realme C3 can also reverse charge other phones.

For a starting price of Rs 6,999, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better smartphone.

Buy from Flipkart.

The Realme 5 was launched just a few months after the Realme 3 but brought upgrades in almost all segments.

The biggest update comes with the quad-camera setup on the back, which is pretty rare in this price segment, as is the Snapdragon 665 chipset powering it.

The big 5,000 mAH battery coupled with the efficient processor and low-res display make for great battery life.

Samsung has been trying to reinvent itself in the budget segment for a while now, and the Galaxy M series is a good testament of the company's efforts. The Galaxy M30 offers a good balance between power, performance and battery life.

Add to it, Samsung's excellent Super AMOLED display, a massive battery that can last for a couple of days on a single charge and a wide-angle camera, you have a recipe for a great phone that has a competitive advantage over its competitors.

The Redmi Note 7S is the successor of the Redmi Note 7 and offers a 48MP camera under Rs 10,000. It features the same gradient glass back design, waterdrop notch and a bright high-quality display at the same time.

When you also consider the massive 4,000mAh battery and the updated MIUI skin, the Redmi Note 7S sounds like a very good proposition.

Unsurprisingly, Xiaomi appears on this list once again with its new Redmi 8. On paper, it's very similar to the Redmi 8A, with a Snapdragon 439 chipset, a 6.2-inch HD+ display and a big battery.

It has a glossy back that mimics glass and looks rather premium, offers a dual-camera setup on the back and also provides a physical fingerprint scanner.

The 5,000 mAh battery is one of the biggest in this segment, and the 18W fast charging over USB Type-C will help future-proof this phone.

Just like its predecessor, the Honor 10 Lite features a great design, giving it a very premium look that belies the price.

The tall Full HD+ display is vibrant and is reason enough to buy this phone. The performance is just average, but the battery backup was excellent, along with support for 10W charging.

Xiaomi is no stranger to bringing incredible phones at rock-bottom prices, and the Redmi 8A is the perfect example of that.

It brings quite a few firsts in this price segment, including a USB Type-C connector, 18W fast charging and a mammoth 5,000 mAh battery.

Along with that, we get the Snapdragon 439, 2 or 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 12MP camera on the back and a 6.2-inch display with a dot notch.

With a starting price of just Rs 6,499, it is the one for the masses.

This cool infographic tells you everything you need to know about the iPhone’s first 10 years

The ultimate iPhone infographic is sure to remind you interesting facts about the past decade of Apple innovation... and controversy you've long forgotten.

Take a look at the prototypes for the original iPhone

This week is the 10 year anniversary of the original iPhone being released to the public (in the US, the rest of the world had to wait a few more months) and it’s amazing to look back on how far phones have come.

It's especially fun to look at the early prototype devices for the original iPhone that never made it to market.

Ken Kocienda – the man who worked on the first iPhone’s software keyboard – shared photos on Twitter of devices he has had stored in his desk for the last ten years.

The devices were originally codenamed “Wallabies”, but Kocienda has said it was never clear why the marsupials were chosen as the secret moniker for the first phone from Apple.

Ten years on

The two prototypes look even chunkier than the original iPhone and come with plastic bodies, rather than the metal cases seen on the first iPhone when it originally launched back in 2007.

Neither of the devices pictured above worked on their own though. Kocienda said, "The Wallabies were just touchscreens driven by a Mac and a bare motherboard through a 30-pin connector."

Kocienda hasn't shared when these devices were being used in development and he's unclear if there were other prototype devices used before the June 2007 release, but this shot gives us a great insight into what the phone looked like early in its life.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 could double up on storage

We all like choice, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 could give us some, as the latest rumor suggests it will come in two storage sizes, with both 64GB and 128GB models available.

And according to Osen, this information comes straight from a Samsung Electronics official, so it could well be true, but we have reason to doubt it.

Aside from the fact that the ‘official’ has remained anonymous, there’s also the fact that Samsung hasn’t tended to offer multiple storage sizes in its recent flagships.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus was a slight exception to that, with both 64GB and 128GB sizes available, but the larger model only launched in a few locations. The phone the Note 8 is set to replace - the Galaxy Note 7 - was only available in a 64GB variant.

So there’s still a high chance that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will launch in just one size, and it will probably be 64GB, since most Samsung flagships are, while if it does launch in two there’s still a fair chance that you’ll only have one of them where you are.

Serious money

The same source goes on to talk about price, saying that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is likely to cost between $1,000 (around £770, AU$1,300) and $1,200 (roughly £920, AU$1,560), which would make it the most expensive Galaxy Note yet.

The source seems less sure about this bit, adding that “I am told that the price of parts has been a factor of rising price, and that some prices have been set high, so I think we should see more about how it will eventually be.” But those prices are believable and roughly in line with earlier rumors.

If the Note 8 really launches in two storage sizes then it’s possible that the larger one will be even more expensive, so with likely just a few months to go until launch you’d better get saving.

  • The Pixel 2 could prove a strong alternative.

Another Galaxy Note 8 puzzle piece falls into place: 64 and 128GB storage options

Compulsive digital hoarders should be happy to hear Samsung reportedly plans to equip the Galaxy Note 8 with 64 and 128GB internal storage.

iPhone 8 case hints at the size and design of Appleā€™s next phone

Recently some iPhone 8 cases and screen protectors went up for pre-order, and while all we had at that point were pictures of them, a retailer has now posted a YouTube video examining them in detail and how they compare to the iPhone 7.

The screen protector has no cut-out for a home button and almost no bezel, other than in the center at the top, to house the front-facing camera and sensors. In fact, there are more sensors here than on the iPhone 7, which could mean the rumored facial recognition features will be included.

The design matches dummy iPhone 7 units that have also leaked in recent weeks, and the screen protector is 139 x 66mm, which the source (MobileFun) theorizes would mean a screen size of around 5.8 inches on the iPhone 8, as has been rumored.

Similar but bigger

The case differs from iPhone 7 cases through the presence of a vertical dual camera and a larger power button. This increase in size is so far unexplained, though has been seen in other leaks. It could be that Apple will house the fingerprint scanner there, though most sources reckon it will be in the screen.

The other ports and buttons meanwhile remain much as they are on existing models – which means no return of the headphone port.

As expected, the case is too big for the iPhone 7, coming in at 145 x 72 x 9mm. Of course, assuming it’s the real deal the iPhone 8 would be slightly smaller than that, but not by much, and those dimensions are still smaller in most ways than the 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3mm iPhone 7 Plus, despite the iPhone 8 likely having a larger screen.

As ever with case leaks we’d take these with a huge pinch of salt. Chances are they’re built based off of the same leaks as the dummy units that are floating around rather than any official information, but that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily wrong either.

We’ll know for sure when the iPhone 8 launches in a few months.
