OnePlus and Qualcomm to start 5G trials in India

OnePlus recently displayed its 5G prototype smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC at MWC 2019. The company will also be among the first smartphone makers to launch smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 855 in India, as well to start 5G trials in the country.

We have been loyal to Qualcomm’s 800-series Snapdragon chipsets since the release of our very first flagship device. This strong partnership with Qualcomm makes us believe that we could bring the best 5G device to the world.

Pete Lau, Founder and CEO, OnePlus

OnePlus began research on 5G in 2016, and a year later, partnered with Qualcomm to on OnePlus’ 5G device development. The partnership was successful, and in October 2018, OnePlus sent out the world’s first 5G tweet by connecting a prototype device to a 5G Non-standalone Network, via an LTE b7 + 5G NR n78 air interface.  The tweet by Pete Lau said ‘Say Hello to 5G’.

OnePlus recently announced that it is also working with Qualcomm to launch the '5G Apps of Tomorrow' challenge for global app developers. Challenge winners will be awarded a total of €250,000, as well as other resources.

OnePlus 7 probably won’t have wireless charging

The OnePlus 7 isn't slated to release until June, so there isn't much buzz around it as yet. However, CEO Pete Lau recently told CNET that the company doesn't consider it worthwhile to add a wireless charging feature to its smartphones.

That's a pretty big hint that the OnePlus 7 won't have wireless charging.

"OnePlus charging is one of the best," Lau said at MWC 2019. "Wireless charging is far inferior."

Lau is sceptical about wireless charging's actual benefits to consumers, noting that it takes a long time to charge a device with a wireless pad. With the physical quick charge adaptor, OnePlus says, you can charge your phone by 50 percent in 20 minutes and fully in under an hour.

OnePlus is working on bringing its quick charging tech to wireless charging, but still hasn't figured out how to do it without excessive heating.

OnePlus does have a point in saying that wireless charging is inferior even compared with regular charging. But that's changing; Xiaomi, for example, claims that the Xiaomi Mi 9 has 20W wireless charging capability-  two or three times the average.

OnePlus is at MWC to display a prototype of its 5G smartphone, which will come to two carriers in Europe in Q2. Lau declined any comment on the OnePlus 7, as well as rumors that it may drop the notch and incorporate a pop-out camera.

Samsung to hold multiple preview events for Galaxy S10 in India

Enthusiasts across eight different cities in India will be able to get their hands on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 on February 21. Samsung will hold exclusive preview events in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Gurgaon and Chandigarh just one day after the official announcement of the smartphone in San Francisco.

Along with the Galaxy S10, the company is also expected to unveil the new Galaxy Buds, as well as possibly the foldable phone. The Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco starts at 11 AM PST on February 20. It will be live-streamed on Samsung's website.

Samsung Galaxy S10- what do we know so far?

The design and display of the S10 will see a slight change from past devices. The display will have a punch-hole housing the selfie camera and an in-display fingerprint sensor.  The Galaxy S10 will reportedly feature a 6.1-inch Super AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution, with a triple rear camera module.

The Galaxy S10 will run Android 9 Pie-based Samsung One UI out of the box. Samsung will continue their tradition of bloatware, this time in hardware form- a Bixby button, on the left side of the phone.

Under the hood is an Exynos 9820 SoC, with 6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB/512GB internal memory. The S10 will reportedly have Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and Wireless Power share. It packs a 3100mAh battery as well as support for reverse wireless charging.

The S10 is expected to launch in India on March 8.

You can buy this 65-inch smart 4K TV by Shinco at Rs 49,990 till January 23

Shinco India is gearing up to launch its 65-inch 4K Smart TV in India on 19th January. Priced at Rs 49,990 upon launch on Amazon until 23rd January (after which the price will be hiked to Rs 59,990), this might well be the cheapest 4K Ultra HD smart TV in India when it launches.

Other smart TVs from well-known brands like the Sony Bravia 163.9 cm (65 Inches) 4K UHD LED Smart TV KD-65X7500F (2018), or the Samsung 163 cm (65 Inches) Series 7 4K UHD LED Smart TV UA65NU7100K (2018), are priced at Rs 1,59,990 and Rs 1,40,000 respectively. In fact, the LG 164 cm (65 Inches) 4K UHD OLED Smart TV OLED65B8PTA (2018) costs a whopping Rs 3,59,990.

So why this dramatic difference in pricing? Well, the reasons could be the relative newness of the brand and the quality of the product. Shinco was launched only last year by Videotex International Pvt Ltd, and as such has had little chance to truly make a mark on the Indian market.

Tech Specs

The device has a 'Quantum Luminit' display and a 'Wide Color Gamut' that supports 95% NTSC and the HDR10. There is also a ‘Voice Recognition’ feature that allows the users to operate the TV via the Sensy Remote App installed on the user’s smartphone.

The TV comes with an “Air Click Remote” that features a QWERTY Keyboard, allowing for operation from any corner of the room. They come with a built-in 20 Watts Sound Bar powered by Boosted Tweeters, boosting the sound for better clarity and quality. All this comes with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB ROM. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, 3 HDMI ports, 2 USB ports, an Ethernet port, et al.

The OS is Android 7 Nougat, which is admittedly a little bit of a downer, but you can still download and watch Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and a host of other entertainment apps. The OS, naturally, allows you to download the apps from the Play Store.

The Shinco 65-inch 4K Ultra HD LED TV will go on sale on the 19th of January, as part of the site's Republic Day Sale. The 'Shinco' app is also available on Google Play Store, allowing users to easily make a request for installation/repair or register their product online.

Note that the brand is fairly new in India and we haven't reviewed the product, we cannot say if the investment is worth or not. It fully depends on the quality of the product and the service the company offers.

Top 5 upcoming smartphones for January 2019

2019 looks like it's going to be an exciting year for the smartphone industry. Brands like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi et al are developing their flagship devices, and we'll be getting several launches over the course of the year. That being said, a number of brands will be launching devices in January itself, so here's our list of the five we're most looking forward to.

Honor View 20

Already launched in China (as the Honor V20), the Honor View 20 will be launched globally on January 22. It's the brand's first smartphone to feature an in-display hole for the front camera. This camera has a single 25MP sensor, while the dual rear camera has one 48MP primary sensor, along with a secondary Time of Flight sensor. The View 20 sports a 6.4-inch All-View display, and is powered by the company's Kirin 980 processor, with 6GB/8GB of RAM, and 128GB/256GB of internal storage. The device packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery.

The 6GB/128GB variant is priced at 2999 Yuan (about Rs 30,000), while the 8GB/128GB model is priced at 3499 Yuan (approximately Rs 35,000)

Huawei Y9 (2019)

Huawei's Y9 (2019) smartphone will be officially launched in India on January 7, at an event in New Delhi. The device was first showcased in China back in October. The phone was recently teased on Amazon, and the e-commerce giant is taking registrations of interest via the 'Notify Me' button for the same.

The Y9 sports a 6.5-inch FullView 3D curved display, and under the hood is the company's own Kirin 710 processor, paired with 3GB/6GB RAM, along with 64GB of internal storage. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo, with Huawei's EMUI 8.2 skin on top. The device packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery. On both the front and back is a dual camera setup. The rear camera sports one 13MP sensor paired with a 2MP secondary sensor, while the front camera consists of one 16MP sensor and a secondary 2MP sensor.

Samsung Galaxy M series

Samsung is tipped to release its new M-series smartphone in India in January. The current lineup includes three names- M10, M20, and M30. The company has released no information about this new lineup as yet.

According to rumours, the Galaxy M10 will sport a 6.5-inch display, and will be powered by the company's own Exynos 7870 processor, paired with 3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB of storage. It will run Google's Android 8.1 Oreo, and will pack a 3400mAh battery.

Right now, we know that the M10 will feature a 13MP primary camera sensor at the back, and a 5MP selfie camera.

The M20 will have a screen resolution of 2340x1080 pixels, with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it will have an Exynos 7885 chipset paired with a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. The device will come with 3GB RAM, and 32GB/64GB of internal storage, expandable via micro-SD. The smartphone will run Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung's Experience UI skin on top.

Finally, the M30 will have similar screen resolution and aspect ratio specs to the M20, as well as the same Exynos 7885 processor, paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of expandable storage.

Redmi Pro 2

Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi Pro 2 in China on January 10, although there is no word on when it will come to India. However, considering the popularity of the Redmi brand in India, we can expect it to be soon.

Rumour has it that the Redmi Pro 2 will be the first 48MP rear camera offering from the brand. The device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC. According to media sports, it may sport a 'punch-hole' display similar to the Honor View 20 or the Samsung Galaxy A8s.

Lenovo Z5 Pro

Lenovo's upcoming Z5 Pro smartphone will be the world's first to feature 12GB of RAM. The phone was showcased during the launch of the Lenovo Z5, with the company stating that it would launch the Z5 Pro in China sometime in January. Reports suggest that it will also be launched globally in the same month.

The Lenovo Z5 Pro sports a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a slider design setup. Under the hood, you'll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, paired with an Adreno 640 GPU. The device will feature 12GB of RAM, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Redmi is now officially a sub-brand of Xiaomi

Sub-brands are becoming rather popular in the smartphone industry. Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus are all sub-brands of BKK Electronics, and we have Huawei's own sub-brand in Honor. Xiaomi on the other hand already has one sub-brand in POCO, and now the Chinese company has announced that Redmi will be split off into its own sub-brand as well.

The Redmi and Redmi Note smartphones have been among the brand's most popular budget smartphones. The move to establish Redmi as an independent brand does make sense, considering that such spin-offs are meant to allow companies to focus on specific markets and target audiences with more distinct products.

While POCO brings high-end hardware to the mid-range market; it seems that phones under the Redmi moniker will focus on budget devices, leaving Xiaomi to focus on the flagship market with its Mi series smartphones.

This could be a good move for Xiaomi, especially in western markets where its just getting started. While the official announcement about Redmi being established as a separate entity has already been made via a post on Weibo, the company is also gearing up to announce a new Redmi smartphone with a 48-megapixel camera on January 10.

Poco F2 concept renders hints at higher screen to body ratio

The success of the Poco F1 lay in the fact that it offered flagship features at a mid-range price. Now, concept renders of the successor, the Poco F2, have surfaced on Geekbench, hinting at significant upgrades from the F1, and even a change in design.

Popular tipster and designer, Benjamin Geskin has shared a concept render of the Poco F2.

The F2 renders hint at a waterdrop-style display notch, as opposed to the traditional wide notch on the Poco F1; from this, we can assume that the Poco F2 screen will be bigger than its predecessor, allowing for more immersive viewing experience. The bezels on the Poco F2 also appear much slimmer in the render than those of the F1.

The dual rear cameras on the Poco F2 will be vertically aligned as in the F1, but the placement looks to be slightly different. In the F1, the camera setup was in the middle of the rear panel, while in the F2, it looks to be in the top left corner.  There will also be a circular rear fingerprint sensor on the F2.

Xiaomi will be looking to improve the design and camera specs, which were the weakness of the Poco F1. It's quite possible that the Poco F2 will have a metallic or glass finish to improve the look of the device. In fact, the render shows the back of the F2 to have a metallic finish.

The Geekbench listing reveals that the F2 will have the same hardware setup as the F1: a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6GB RAM. Considering that the F1 has both 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM models, we can expect the Poco F2 to have an 8GB RAM variant as well.
