Windows 10 Mobile on HTC 8X isn’t happening right now

HTC has had a legacy relationship with Windows, but it’s been a dry one as of late. The One M8 for Windows came in about 16 months ago with Windows Phone 8.1 and we haven’t heard anything in terms of updates to Windows 10 Mobile. But we know which HTC Windows device won’t be getting the OTA update.

Sprint HTC 8XT Windows Phone 8.1 update coming this month

It’s been a while since we last heard of Sprint’s HTC 8XT Windows Phone — when it was “demoted” to “basic phone” status — let alone since we reviewed it and concluded it is/was a “midrange phone in flagship clothing”. That being said,

Sprint HTC 8XT demoted to ‘basic phone’ status

The Sprint HTC 8XT is a “midrange phone in flagship clothing”; that’s the tagline of our full review, but even as a midrange, it is a smartphone by definition, running on Microsoft’s Windows Phone mobile platform. Sprint apparently doesn’t agree with that assessment and has demoted the HTC 8XT, as seen in the image above. Placed under “basic phones”, right next to a Samsung, three Kyocera, and an LG device, the Sprint HTC 8XT is undoubtedly ...

Samsung ATIV S Neo vs HTC 8XT (Video)

We’ve reviewed the HTC 8XT and unboxed the Samsung ATIV S Neo – so even the occasional Pocketnow reader will know what comes next. That’s right: as we continue to put our ATIV S Neo through the review ringer, we need to throw it head-to-head against the device that beat it to Big Yellow. In the below video, the ...

Vibrant colors are the new black: what color phone do you want?

For the last four years, save for a few different models, practically every smartphone started to look the same and came in a very limited choice in color (or lack thereof, technically): black or white. And in the last year or so, several OEMs have started to “revolutionize” the industry by offering a marginally broader selection of colors. Nokia has introduced a handful of different models with some standardized color options: candy red, ...

HTC 8XT review: a midrange phone in flagship clothing

The last Windows Phone to make an appearance on Sprint retail shelves was also the company’s first – and it also hailed from HTC. The Arrive, a side-sliding QWERTY smartphone that made up part of the original Windows Phone 7 rollout back in 2011, has for the past two-and-a-half years represented Sprint’s only modern Microsoft offering – a sad state of affairs for fans of Live Tiles on America’s third-largest network. So the HTC 8XT, with its modern build, BoomSound speakers, and ...

Pocketnow Weekly 057: Hellacious Trio of Champions

If you thought the Palm commercials of 2009 were as weird as mobile tech advertising would ever get, HTC and Robert Downey Jr. have something to show you. That’s the conversation that kicks off this week’s edition of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast, and it’s followed by some heartening news about this year’s IFA in Berlin. If the rumors hold true, we should be in for some powerfully geeky, if unconventional, tech in Germany this year – and even if they don’t, we’ve got plenty to talk about in the way of chipsets, Nexii, smartwatches, and phablets. If ...

HTC could have brought Moto X customizations to Windows Phone

HTC sure likes bringing some color to its Windows Phone offerings; whether we’re looking at the solid hues on the 8X or the two-tone action on the 8S, HTC’s WP8 models give even Nokia a run for its money when it comes to vibrant, fun designs. More recently, we’ve seen that trend continue with the 8XT on Sprint. Now, a new rumor suggests that HTC was once planning even more elaborate color options for its phones, and was ...

Pocketnow Weekly 055: Moto X hopes, LG G2 dreams, Lumia 1020 fears

We’re on the eve of the launch of a most significant (if not spec-packed) smartphone, the Moto X. We’re hot on the heels of the industry’s latest benchmark-juicing scandal with Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 tweaking. We’re only a week away from seeing what LG has to offer with its G2 (though we already know what accessories it’s launching with). And we’re not even a week out from the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020, but we’re already in full-on fretting mode about our favorite Finns. That roster would be enough to fuel two podcast episodes this size, ...

HTC 8XT vs HTC One (Video)

The HTC 8XT. It’s Sprint’s first Windows Phone in literally years, and it’s one of the only HTC devices in the carrier’s lineup. So say you’re stuck choosing between this and the much-ballyhooed HTC One. Besides software, are there really that many differences between the high-end offerings from Microsoft ...

HTC 8XT unboxing (Video)

Normally, the launch of a carrier-specific variant of an HTC 8X wouldn’t merit much in the way of celebration. It certainly wouldn’t ordinarily be enough to rearrange our schedule, especially if it meant delaying the recording of the already-late Pocketnow Weekly podcast for another hour, or putting the on-time publication of our Nokia Lumia 1020 review in serious jeopardy. If this were a less-notable device, we’d have pushed it off ...

Sprint lays-out arrival plans for HTC 8XT

Sprint users have been waiting the better part of forever for their carrier to get around to offering some Windows Phone 8 smartphones. Several months back, we at least learned that Sprint would indeed be adding a couple WP8 models to its lineup, and just last month we finally got confirmation of both, with the announcements of the HTC 8XT and the Samsung ATIV S Neo. Even after waiting this long, though, that news arrived ...
