October Android security update will hopefully save my Pixel 3 from going into the trash

Google has begun the rollout of the October Android security update for its line-up of Pixel smartphones. The update is available for the Pixel 2/2 XL, Pixel 3/3 XL. Pixel 3a/ 3a XL, Pixel 4/ 4 XL, and the Pixel 4a. As expected, it brings a host of bug fixes and resolves a few device-specific issues as well. One of the improvements listed in the changelog that hits a bit close to home for me was a fix for the Pixel 3/ 3 XL’s bootloop issue. “Fix for some devices stuck during boot”, says the official support page. You can check the whole changelog below:

Now, I’ve been testing Android 11 ever since the first beta was released, after which my Pixel 3 got the stable update. However, the stable Android 11 update didn’t prove to be particularly stable for my Pixel 3, as the device started randomly rebooting on its own. On a few occasions, the phone got stuck in a bootloop cycle and won’t even let me reset it or enter the recovery mode, as it automatically shut down while I was navigating the menu. A few times, the phone made it past the Google logo screen and made it to the lock screen, but again went into the reboot cycle as soon as I swiped up.

The error message I frequently saw while trying to enter the recovery mode on my Pixel 3.

Surprisingly, the Pixel 3 started working normally once the bootloop cycle fully exhausted the battery and I charged it again. However, it started boot-looping soon after, with the periods of normal functionality lasting between a few hours to a few days. Now, I love my Pixel 3 for reasons more than one (good cameras, clean interface and compact size) and also abhor it for its glaring failures that include an awful battery life and aggressive background app management. But or the most part, I enjoy using it – WITHOUT THE BOOTLOOPING, that is!

However, it appears that I am not the only one experiencing bootloop issues on my phone after, and neither is Pixel 3 the only Google smartphone experiencing the problem after updating to Android 11. A quick look at the official Google Support forum (1, 2, 3, 4), Reddit, XDA-Developers forum, and Twitter reveals a plethora of complaints from Pixel 2, Pixel 3a, as well as Pixel 3 users. Take for example this Twitter user’s complaint:

And this:

And this one too:

I’ve just finished installing the October security update on my Pixel 3, and I am sincerely hoping that the bootloop issue gets fixed. While I’ve got a few smartphones lying around that I could use while my Pixel 3 was paying a visit to the bootloop-verse, not many users have access to a spare device that they can use as their daily driver. And the fact that the Pixel 3 didn’t come cheap and the customer support service does not always provide a satisfactory solution for a two-generation old device, the stakes for the October Android security update to fulfill its role are a notch higher.

Nokia Android 11 update roadmap leaked by HMD Global

We have been receiving a couple of interesting rumors and leaks from Nokia lately. It seems that we may see the launch of three new devices as soon as November, including the Nokia 9.3 PureView. However, this time we are going to focus on software, as the company in charge of manufacturing Nokia phones, HMD Global, seems to have revealed some information concerning the Android 11 rollout to its devices to take it down moments after.

It seems that HMD Global has most of its plans to upgrade its Nokia devices, at had posted a rough timeline depicting when each device would receive the new Android 11 software update. However, we may believe that some details need to be checked since the timeline was taken down quickly after being published.

According to the image posted by HMD Global, we could expect to see Android 11 OTA updates for the Nokia 8.3 5G, the Nokia 2.2, Nokia 5.3, and the Nokia 8.1 during Q4 of 2020. The next devices to receive the update would be the Nokia 1.3, Nokia 4.2, Nokia 2.4, Nokia 2.3, and the Nokia 3.4 sometime in Q1 2021, with the Nokia 3.2, Nokia 7.2, and Nokia 6.2 sometime between Q1 and Q2 2021. Finally, the Nokia 1 Plus and the Nokia 9 PureView would be left for last, as they would receive the update in Q2 2021.

Now, the image may have been taken down because the update timeline may still be under revision, but at least we got a glimpse of what to expect. Remember that Nokia phones are part of the Android One program, which means that they receive Android updates rather fast when compared to other OEMs. Now, we will also have to wait for the launch of the new Nokia 9.3 PureView, which may launch with the Nokia 7.3, Nokia 6.3, to see if they arrive with Android 11 out of the box, or if we will also have to wait for an update.

Android 11 update for Google Pixel phones in India now rolling out

Google released its Android 11 update for the Pixel smartphones on September 8. However, the update didn’t make it to Indian users. Google’s own OTA update images page that houses Android 11 stable builds for all the eligible Pixel phones mentioned “all carriers except IN” that confirmed the updates’ initial unavailability for Indian users. Finally, the company is releasing Android 11 update for the Pixel users in India.

Google took to its forums to announce the latest development. One of the community specialists wrote, “we are happy to announce that Android 11 has started to roll out to supported Pixel devices in India.” The update is coming to Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, and Pixel 4a. Users on Twitter are also reporting of receiving the new software. While it might take a  while before the update reaches all Pixel units, you can check it manually by going to System > Advanced > System update.

You can now also group apps by themes like photography, news, navigation, fitness and more.

Users can also prioritize certain chats that can break through the do not disturb mode as well. Then there are Bubble notifications, which allow users to quickly reply to incoming messages from an app without having to switch between apps. Moreover, Android 11 finally adds an in-built screen recording tool that can use the onboard mic or a connected device to record audio.

Android 11 Go Edition is here, brings more out of phones with up to 2GB of RAM

Following the release of Android 11’s stable build a day ago, Google has now announced Android 11 Go Edition for budget Android devices that pack 2GB of RAM or less. Google says phones running Android 11 Go Edition will launch apps 15% faster compared to its predecessor, Android 10 Go Edition. Moreover, it also facilitates an extra 270MB of RAM, which means users will now be able to run up to four more apps in the background. Similarly, it also affords 900MB of extra space for storing more apps and media. Android 11 also borrows some features and security enhancements from the vanilla Android 11 experience.

Android 11 Go Edition brings support for one-time permission for apps.

For example, Android 11 Go Edition puts all conversations in one place (in the notifications shade), ensuring that you can find all conversations easily and reply to them. And just like Android 11, the Go Edition also brings one-time permission for apps that require access to data such as location, mic and camera among other sensitive information channels. Similarly, if you haven’t used an app for a while, its permissions are automatically revoked.

Gesture-based navigations are now available on Android Go with its Android 11 iteration.

Android 11 Go Edition also supports gesture-based navigation, leaving more screen real estate for apps to take advantage of. Similarly, the safe folder feature in the Files app for securely storing sensitive information is now available on Android 11 Go Edition as well. Google says it has increased the amount of RAM from 1.5GB to 2GB for devices to qualify for its Go Edition (Android 11) program due to the arrival of more advanced features on modern budget phones.

The secure folder feature in the Files app is comes to devices running Android 11 Go Edition.

“In the past two years, smartphone manufacturers have produced high-quality Android devices—with features like dual cameras or fingerprint scanners—at more affordable prices. As more of these memory-intensive features come to entry-level smartphones, our partners have asked us to improve performance on these devices, particularly around speed, storage, and memory. So, starting next month Android (Go edition) will be available on all devices with up to 2GB of memory,” explains Google.

Pocketnow Daily: Apple Event Confirmed and Here’s What It Hints! (video)

Samsung Galaxy Note 20, a new Apple Shopping event, and more on sale today

Deals. It looks like Samsung does not like to waste time as we have deals on the brand new Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra. They’re both $200 off, leaving the 128GB variant of the Note 20 for $799 shipped, in all color variants. That means that the Note 20 Ultra is $1099 for the 128GB of storage. Moving on to Best Buy, they’re having yet another Apple Sales Event. For example, the 16in MacBook Pro is $200 off, leaving the Intel Core i9, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage variant for $2600. They also have more deals on iPad Pros, MacBook Airs, iPhones and more and we also have other deals in the links below.

LG Wing’s leaked hands-on video finally shows how the rotating dual display works

Yesterday, LG confirmed that their “Explorer Project“, which is coming out on September 14th, will be called the LG Wing. And, we’ve seen other leaked videos of the phone like the ones on the car but now, we have an 8 second hands on of the device where we see the display rotating for the first time. On the video you can see the UI change as the person rotates the main display from its horizontal state to the vertical state and honestly it looks pretty smooth. This seems to be a glossy, white color variant which means that it could bring a similar design language to the Velvet. According to an ETNews report the shipment price for the Wing has been set at around $918 from KRW but after the value-added tax rate it shows it’s $1608. Both of these prices go right along with the leaks we got last week so we can expect the actual price to be somewhere around this.

Microsoft officially unveils Xbox Series S and confirms a sweet $299 asking price

A few months ago we covered the possibility of a more affordable and smaller alternative for the Xbox Series X, which would be dubbed the Series S. Well, that just became a reality. Microsoft officially unveiled this console online and it will bring a custom-made NVMe SSD with a 512GB capacity, up to 120fps at 1440p, DirectX ray-tracing, 4K media streaming and more, all while being 60% smaller than the Xbox Series X, meaning that this is the smallest Xbox ever. The teaser also claims that it already has 100 high quality titles that will be optimized for the next generation. According to a Windows Central report, the Series S will be released along with the Series X on November 10th and it will cost $299. Considering that the Series X might cost around $499, this looks like a pretty good alternative as, the PS5 will reportedly bring a hefty price tag as well.

Microsoft is working on a smaller Surface-branded laptop that might start at just $500

Sticking with Microsoft, we know that the Surface lineup is pretty much all 2-in-1 convertibles except for the Surface Laptop which has kind of a pricy entry level variant. Well, according to another Windows Central report, Microsoft is working on a more affordable Surface Laptop. The report claims that it’s codenamed “Sparti” and it will apparently bring a 12.5in display, a 10th Gen Intel Core i5, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. It would bring Windows 10 in S Mode and would start at around $500 or $600. This new Surface Laptop would be targeted at students and it would reportedly launch in October. Microsoft apparently wants to go after the Chromebook market with this one and it might just work out considering it will be an actual PC.

Android 11 released for Pixel smartphones via the stable channel. What’s new?

A couple of months ago I made a video on how Android 11 was making me love the Google Pixel 4 again. Well, Google just released the first stable build of Android 11 for all compatible phones, meaning Pixels. Most of the features that Android 11 brings were already present in the betas but just to refresh your memory, it focuses a lot on privacy like how you now get a dedicated notifications tab for conversations, app permissions reset after a while of you not using them, separation between work and personal files and more. Media controls have been revamped a long with Google Home controls, a new native screen recorder and more. You can check out my long term review of the Pixel 4 XL with Android 11 which will be right up here on the screen to check out other updates. So, if you have a Pixel 2 or newer you can download it already, we’ll keep you posted on when other devices get it.

Story of the day:

Apple schedules an event on September 15, Apple Watch Series 6 expected to debut

And yes, Marc Gurman’s leaks from yesterday were right! Apple just scheduled an event for September 15th at 10AM PST, where we’re expecting to get some new hardware. However, Marc claimed that this will be the “iPhone” September Event but it looks like that’s not what we should expect here. The press invitation has the caption “Time Flies” and with an art that looks like a looping armband, so yes this is hinting that we’ll be getting the Apple Watch Series 6. What’s weird is that the event is scheduled to happen for two hours, so we should naturally expect more hardware than just an Apple Watch. According to Bloomberg and other tipsters, we should also get a redesigned iPad Air with an edge-to-edge screen, possibly Apple’s over the ear headphones, and even a smaller HomePod. Other things that might make the cut but are unlikely at this event are the Apple Tags or AirTags and maybe even AirPower. This also means that the iPhone 12 Line will happen until October like we expected as, they’re just not ready, they reportedly entered mass production this week.

Android 11 released for Pixel smartphones via the stable channel. What’s new?

Android 11 is finally here. Google has released the stable build of Android 11 for all compatible Pixel smartphones. Android 11 brings a host of changes to boost privacy, makes it more convenient to manage notifications, introduces a built-in screen recording tool and adds wireless Android Auto to name a few. Additionally, Android 11 also introduces a few Pixel-first features as well, such as the ability to use Live View with Location Sharing in Google Maps to locate friends, Smart Reply and app suggestions among others.

Most of these features have already been present in the developer and public betas, so if you’ve been running these builds on your Pixel smartphone, you won’t find too many differences following the update. Here’s a quick rundown of the new features arriving with Android 11:

  • All conversations from messaging apps have been moved to a dedicated space in the notifications shade, making it easier to access them. Users can also prioritize certain chats that can break through the do not disturb mode as well.
  • Bubble notifications are here. They allow users to quickly reply to incoming messages from an app without having to switch between apps.
  • Now, this is one of the most heavily requested features. Android 11 finally adds an in-built screen recording tool that can use the onboard mic or a connected device to record audio.
  • Long pressing the power button now gives users access to all the smart devices in their home, saving them the hassle of opening a dedicated smart home app.
  • Media controls have also been revamped, making it easier to seamlessly switch music playback between devices and from different apps as well.
  • Android 11 also introduces wireless Android Auto support for vehicles that are compatible with the platform.
  • One-time permissions are here. Users can now grant an app temporary permission to access their phone’s mic, camera, or location without having to worry about disabling app permissions later.
  • Android 11 will automatically reset device permissions for apps that haven’t been used for a while.
  • Google Play updates with privacy and security fixes will now be seeded directly, which means users will no longer have to wait for an OS update.
  • Android 11 also brings better separation between work and personal profiles on enterprise devices and boosts the security as well.

Pixel-first features in Android 11

  • Talking about Pixel-first features, Pixel smartphone users will now be able to use Live View with Location Sharing in Google Maps to find their friends if they have agreed to share their location.
21_LiveView_Marketing_en-US (2).gif
  • Another very useful feature is Smart Reply within Gboard, which offers quick suggestions for replying to a message. This will come in handy when you don’t have time or bandwidth to type a message and just to want to reply with a quick tap.
Screen Shot 2020-09-05 at 9.17.04 PM.png
  • Android 11 also brings smart app suggestions. As the name makes it abundantly clever, it will automatically suggest apps based on usage habits and time of the day.

  • The task switcher now has a screenshot button that makes it easy to capture, edit and share screenshots.

Google limits third-party camera apps on Android 11 devices to boost privacy

Google has updated the behavior change support document for developers whose apps are getting ready for Android 11, and it changes the operating system’s intent method for launching a camera app. In Android 11, a majority of apps will be forced to use the default pre-installed camera app on a phone for recording videos and taking photos rather than the third-party apps installed on the device.

“This is designed to ensure that the EXIF location metadata is correctly processed based on the location permissions defined within the app sending the intent,” says Google. In a statement given to The Verge, Google claims that the change has been made to make sure that an incident such as the Shutterfly app, which covertly sent GPS coordinates back to its servers without explicitly asking permission for location tracking, does not happen again.

So what does this mean for users? Well, you’ll still be able to download a third-party camera app and use it freely by selecting the icon from the app tray or using a shortcut such as double-tapping the power button. Additionally, apps that have their own camera interface such as Instagram or Snapchat will remain unaffected. It’s just that when an app requires you to pull a video or photo, it will launch the pre-installed camera app instead of a third-party app.

Android 11-based Wear OS announced with new features and support for Qualcomm’s latest SoCs

Google has announced that a new OTA update for Wear OS will arrive in the fall season, and it will introduce a host of new features and performance improvements. The folks over at XDA-Developers have received confirmation that the upcoming build of Wear OS is based on Android 11, a much-needed upgrade from its current iteration which is still stuck on Android 9 Pie.

Notably, the smartwatch platform is adding support for Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100+ chips that were announced back in June, and are claimed to offer an 85% performance boost, as well as connectivity and power efficiency improvements. Google says the Wear OS update will bring the following changes:

  • Improved performance by making it faster to access information and start apps.
  • Simplified pairing process to make onboarding easier.
  • More intuitive controls for managing different watch modes and workouts.
  • Up to a 20% speed improvement in startup time for apps.
  • New weather experience that includes an hourly breakdown of the weather forecast and local weather alerts.

Pixel 4a may launch soon, but the Google Pixel 2 will lose support

Google seems to have everything ready for the launch of the new Pixel 4a. However, the arrival of this new device could also arrive with some negative news, for Google Pixel 2 users, since their devices would lose support with the arrival of new Pixel devices.

The Google Pixel 2 can say goodbye to important software updates after getting Android 11. Google initially promised that its devices would get two major updates, and that means that the Pixel 2’s support was supposed to end last year. However, Google then decided to give its devices three major software updates. In other words, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will receive a final version of Android 11 when it launches, followed by a couple of security updates before they are finally left without support by the end of the year.

This information was confirmed, in a way, by a developer comment in the AOSP, where we also find the first mention of the Google Pixel 5a. The developer also mentions s list of almost every Pixel device, released and unreleased, where we see that the Google Pixel 4a will launch with Android 10, instead of Android 11.

Android 11 has a secret dessert name, and it’s Red Velvet Cake

After almost a decade of naming every major Android build after a dessert, Google finally decided to change things last year and said Android 10 will be just called Android 10, while the next version also followed suit and made its debut as Android 11. But it appears that shedding all that dessert love is for the masses only, as Googlers still love naming Android 11 builds after sweet delicacies, and the same has continued for Android 11 as well.

In a recent interview with AllAboutAndroid (via AndroidAuthority), Dave Burke – VP of Engineering for Android at Google – revealed that the internal codename for Android 11 is RVC, which stands for Red Velvet Cake. However, it appears that the name is just used among the team working on Android 11, and won’t appear on a billboard anytime soon.

“We’re turning it to 11, so it’s Android 11. However, if you were to ask a member of my team ‘What are they working on?’ They would say RVC, and so, RVC is Red Velvet Cake,”, Burke was quoted as saying. We kinda miss the whole debate surrounding the dessert name of every new Android version over the years, but going with a simple numerical naming scheme has definitely made things easier to remember.

Canon launches 45MP flagship EOS R5 for $3,899

Alright, can I just say Dear Canon, welcome back. For those of you that didn’t know this show started with a Canon T3i back in 2012, and let’s just say the company really dropped the ball after. Took forever to adopt 4K, and when they did it was a horrible crop even at full frame. Like we had to move to Sony and then Panasonic, but we might just wanna go back. Hear this.. They just launched a new flagship 45MP EOS R5 camera. Yes, it costs $3899 but, this thing is capable of recording 8K 12-bit RAW video with new in-body stabilization with their class-leading Dual Pixel autofocus. Oh, and did I also mention that it records 4K at 120fps, and that it brings an articulate LCD display? So, to my buddy David Cogen who said that Blackmagic was a poor man’s RED, this just took the title.

Android 11 set to go official on September 8?

Android 11 Beta 1 was released about a month ago and yesterday we got the second version. Now, we don’t have an exact launch date for the final software but, Mountain View may have just leaked it. Google released a video titled “Works with “Hey G” Smart Home Summit – APAC” and it revealed through a check list that Android 11 would be officially released on September 8. However, Android Authority reports that Google reached out and said that the date was an error but it still gives us at least an idea of when to expect the official Android 11.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ leak reveals Snapdragon 865+ and 45W charging

The Samsung Galaxy Buds X have been certified by the FCC

Let’s talk about certifications which just keep on coming, specifically for the products we’re expecting from Samsung’s Unpacked. Now we have the specs for the Galaxy Tab S7+ which, according to the report, will bring the new Snapdragon 865+ SoC, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage along with a 10090 mAh battery which supports 45W fast charging. It’ll also bring 5G connectivity but, it will only support sub-6GHz bands. Apparently it will also pack dual cameras at the back and a 120Hz display. Moving on to another certification, the Galaxy Buds X or Buds Live just went through the FCC as well, revealing the dimensions and the fact that they will weigh around 5g. They have this bean shape as they’re meant to go inside your ear unlike the Buds+ and will reportedly cost $140 to undercut the AirPods Pro while still bring Noise Cancellation. Some leaks hint to these launching along the Galaxy Watch 3 on July 22nd instead of Unpacked but, we’ll have to wait and see.

Story of the day:

We get more OnePlus Nord leaks

OnePlus Nord leaked in full glory ahead of July 21 launch

We’re getting closer and closer to the OnePlus Nord and now we have some leaks that actually don’t come from OnePlus. The first one is a couple of pictures posted by Evan Blass, showing the phone off in a black color variant. We get to see the quad camera array at the back along with the dual punch hole at the front, pretty much confirming the leaks and teasers we saw earlier. The second image also comes from Evan, now showing off the cases which will apparently be made by three different artists. The first two come from Swedish artists called Camilla Ermstrong and Finsta, while the third one will be a teardown case by our buddy Zack at JerryRigEverything. You gotta admit this is the most epic OnePlus launch ever and probably at the right time considering, right now what we need is more affordable phones. Android 11 set to go official on September 8?

Android 11 Beta 1 update was released by Google last month, and just yesterday it released the beta 2 update of its upcoming OS version. While the launch date of the stable release was not announced, a new video posted by Google has revealed the official launch date of stable Android 11.

The unlisted developer-focussed video posted by Google titled “Works With “Hey Google” Smart Home Summit – APAC” reveals that the official launch date of Android 11 is September 8. One of the slides in the video read “Checklist for September 8th Android 11 launch.”

However, Android Authority reports that Google says the September 8 Android 11 release date was an error, and that the launch date is not yet confirmed. But this doesn’t rule out the leaked launch date completely. For now, the company says the release date has yet to be finalized. You can read about Android 11 features here.
