Which Apple Watch should you buy: Series 6, Series 3, or SE?

Apple pulled off a surprise this year by launching a more affordable smartwatch with mass appeal – the Apple Watch SE. While the Apple Watch Series 6 is an amalgam of the most advanced features and cutting-edge hardware that Apple can offer, the Apple Watch SE serves more like an entry-point in Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem without cutting too many corners. Or to put it simply, the Apple Watch SE is to Apple’s smartwatches what the iPhone SE is to the current iPhone line-up. But starting at $279, the Apple Watch SE is not exactly cheap and is neither the cheapest smartwatch that Apple has to offer. That honor goes to the Apple Watch Series 3, which currently starts at $199 and is an attractive option for many buyers. So, which one is the best fit for you? Read our detailed comparison to find out the answer:

Design

The underlying design of all three Apple smartwatches has a lot in common, and the only key difference is the size, color options, build quality, and the choice of bands you have at your disposal. Talking about the size, the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE come in two sizes – 44mm and 40mm. The Apple Watch Series 3, on the other hand, is available in 38mm and 42mm case sizes

Talking about the case options, the Apple Watch Series 6 can be yours in a trio of case options – Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Titanium. Of course, the price of each case option differs as you go up from Aluminum to Titanium. As for the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Series  3, they only come in an Aluminum case option

Apple Watches with different colored bands in a circle
Apple Watch SE doesn’t offer ECG and blood oxygen monitoring features.

A noteworthy difference is that despite the bump in size, the Apple Watch Series 6 case is 11 percent thinner than the one on Apple Watch Series 3. Also, the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE rock a ceramic and sapphire crystal back which is more durable, while the Apple Watch Series 3 has a composite back.

Talking about color options, the Apple Watch Series 6 comes in Silver, Space Gray, Gold, Blue, Red, Space Black, Graphite, and Titanium Colors. The Apple Watch SE only comes in Silver, Space, and Gold Shades. Coming to the Apple Watch Series 3, it is up for grabs in Silver and Space Gray colors. The Apple Watch Series 6 and its SE sibling also get an Apple Watch Nike version, while the Apple Watch Series 6 exclusively comes in a luxurious Apple Watch Hermes Edition too.

All three devices are claimed to be swim-proof with a water resistance rating of 50 meters. However, Apple warns that you should not wear your Apple Watch while scuba diving, waterskiing, or other activities that involve high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth.

Display

Apple Watch SE features a Retina LTPO OLED display without Force Touch support.

As mentioned above, both the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE come in two sizes – 40mm and 44mm. The display on the 40mm version offers a resolution of 324×394 pixels, while the 44mm version’s display has a resolution of 368×448 pixels. A key difference here is that the Apple Watch Series 6 employs an Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display, while the Apple Watch SE opts for a regular Retina LTPO OLED display. If you compare the size, the display on the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE is 30% larger than the one on the Apple Watch Series 3.

Coming to the Apple Watch Series 3, the 38mm version has a display with a resolution of 272×340 pixels, while the panel on its 42mm version has a resolution of 312×390 pixels. Another difference is that the Apple Watch Series 3 opts for a Retina OLED display without the LTPO technology. Notably, the peak brightness output on all three Apple smartwatches is identical at 1000 nits.

Internals

The Apple Watch Series 6 uses the new dual-core S6 chip that is claimed to be 20% faster than its predecessor. It is accompanied by the W3 Apple Wireless chip that supports Bluetooth 5.0 standard. More importantly, the Apple Watch Series 6 comes equipped with the U1 Ultra Wideband chip that is also found inside the iPhone 11 series and is used for spatial awareness and more accurate positioning.

Coming to the Apple Watch SE, it uses the last-gen S5 chip that is touted to be twice as fast as the S3 silicon. Plus, it also gets the W3 Bluetooth chip but doesn’t come equipped with a U1 chip inside. Lastly, the Apple Watch Series 3 draws power from the in-house S3 silicon ticking alongside the older W2 chip.

Apple Watch Series 3 misses out on cellular connectivity support.

The new generation Apple smartwatches also bump up the storage. The GPS-only as well as the GPS+Cellular variants of the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE pack 32GB of storage. The sole GPS variant of the Apple Watch Series 3 comes equipped with 8GB of onboard storage

The speaker on the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE is claimed to be at least 50% louder than the one fitted inside the Apple Watch Series 3. Plus, the accelerometer that comes equipped inside the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE can measure 32-g forces and also supports fall detection. In comparison, the accelerometer inside the Apple Watch Series 3 can only measure up to 16-g forces and does not support fall detection

Connectivity

Another huge difference between Apple’s 2020 smartwatches and the Apple Watch Series 3 is connectivity. The Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE both come in GPS-only and the GPS+ Cellular variants, while the Apple Watch Series 3 doesn’t offer cellular connectivity support.

GPS + Cellular variant of Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE support Family Setup
The GPS + Cellular variant of Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE support Family Setup.

The Apple Watch Series 6 also offers dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz + 5GHz) support, which means faster connectivity and speed. The Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Series  3 can only latch on to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band.

Another key difference is that the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE support the Bluetooth 5.0 standard which offers a faster and more stable pairing experience compared to the older Bluetooth 4.2 standard supported by the Apple Watch Series 3.

Battery Life

Apple has not revealed the mAh count of the batteries fitted inside the three smartwatches, but all three of them are claimed to last 18 hours on a single charge. A key change Apple is making this year is that the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE will no longer ship with a power adapter in the retail package, a move that goes towards Apple’s commitment to reducing e-waste. You only get a magnetic charging cable that you can connect to any other adapter lying around or a USB power source to charge the smartwatches.

Sensors

Apple watch with image on screen showing different sensor capabilities
Apple, Watch Series 6 comes equipped with an all new Blood Oxygen sensor.

The presence of sensors is what dictates the capabilities of every new Apple Watch generation. The Apple Watch Series 6 stands tall above the rest two by packing a dedicated blood oxygen sensor for measuring blood oxygen saturation levels, and an electric heart rate sensor as well, for measuring ECG. Neither the Apple Watch SE nor the Apple Watch Series 3 has these two sensors. All three feature an optical heart rate sensor for measuring the regular heart rate activity and have a digital crown as well.

Notably, the digital crown on the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE also offers haptic feedback, while the one on Apple Watch Series 3 doesn’t. Plus, the altimeter inside the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE is of the always-on type, while the Apple Watch Series 3 had a regular altimeter. Also, the Apple Watch Series 3 misses out on a compass

Features

The biggest advantage of buying the Apple Watch Series 6 is its ability to measure blood oxygen saturation level and ECG, both of which are absent from the Apple Watch Series 3 and the Apple Watch SE. You get the Emergency SOS feature on all three smartwatches, but the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch Series also offer support for international emergency calling and noise monitoring as well.

Apple watch showing ability to measure blood oxygen saturation levels

The ability to measure blood oxygen saturation levels helps the Apple Watch Series 6 stand out.

Talking about heart-related wellness features, all three Apple smartwatches are capable of sending low and high heart rate notifications, as well as for irregular heart rate rhythms. Another major difference is that the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE also support the new Family Setup feature that allows you to configure an Apple Watch for family members without them needing to carry an iPhone. This feature only works on the GPS + Cellular variant of the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE. And since the Apple Watch Series 3 misses out on cellular connectivity, it doesn’t support Family Setup.

Verdict

The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with an all-new blood oxygen sensor that can measure the oxygen saturation level of blood. It shines multi-color LEDs and infrared light through the blood vessels, assessing their color and then using algorithms to measure how much oxygen they carry. Plus, it can also take ECG measurements which can alert users via notification when irregular heart rhythm is detected. This can prove to be invaluable for people with heart conditions and can help identify atrial fibrillation (AFib), a condition that can lead to strokes.

If you are a fitness enthusiast who wants the best of health-tracking abilities, then the Apple Watch Series 6 with its blood oxygen level measuring capability is the better choice. Plus, if you or any of your family members suffer from heart issues, the ECG feature on the Apple Watch Series 6 can be a life-saving measure courtesy of a device that starts at $399.

The Apple Watch Series 3 and the Apple Watch SE miss out on both blood oxygen measurement and ECG. And if these features are not important for you, you can save a few hundred dollars by not buying the Apple Watch Series 6 because the rest of the package is more or less the same when it comes to the Apple Watch SE. However, if you’re not heavily invested in a fitness-centric lifestyle and just want a companion device on which you can check out notifications and do some basic tasks, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a great choice at just $199.

    Apple Watch Series 6

    The best out there

The Apple Watch Series 6 stands tall above the rest of its siblings by offering ECG two vital wellness capabilities - ECG and blood oxygen monitoring. Plus, it is also faster, packs a better display and comes in a new Titanium case option as well.
     The Apple Watch SE

    Fast and affordable

Carrying a base price of $279, the Apple Watch offers the same design as the Apple Watch Series 6. If you do not necessarily feel the need for ECG and blood oxygen monitoring, the Apple Watch SE is simply the best smartwatch out there for your needs.
    Apple Watch Series 3

    Cheap and reliable

Apple Watch Series 3 is currently the cheapest smartwatch in Apple’s portfolio with a starting price of $199. It comes with heart rate tracking capability and is an excellent option if you don’t want to spend much for experiencing an Apple smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, Apple’s iPad and more devices are on sale today

The official news today begin with deals, and here’s the thing, now that iPhones are out, of course we can expect the competition to continue to get aggressive. Let’s start it off with the Galaxy S20 Ultra which is $150 0ff, that leaves the US entry level variant for $1250 shipped. Still not my favorite camera on a phone, but everything else is quite solid. My favorite is actually the galaxy S20+, and this one is $204 off, leaving that for $997 shipped. Now you know I gave the entry level 10.2-inch iPad a positive review, but I did recommend that you get more storage. Right now that exact variant is $34 off, which means you get 128GB for $395 shipped. Finally, for those of you looking for gaming peripherals, we have a ton of deals on Razer products, for example, the Mamba Elite mouse is $39 off, leaving it for $60. We have more deals on Apple products, Motorola phones and more in the links in the description.

The Apple Watch SE is presenting overheating issues

Now let’s talk about issues with new devices, since that never stops being a thing whenever products launch. According to several people in Korea, and notice I said in Korea, the new Apple Watch SE is having some overheating issues. The complains have surfaced on Reddit where at least 6 users claim that their smartwatches overheat and stop working correctly. They also have a yellow spot on the upper right corner of the display. According to some users, these issues started appearing while they were wearing the watch while others noticed that it was overheating while charging. One of them actually slept with it on, and woke up with his wrist extremely hot, the Watch’s display was useless, even if the Find My app was still working and was still able to play the sound on the Watch. So far there hasn’t been a teardown but, it could be a bad batch as, all of the users with this issue are from Korea. Apparently this can be an issue with the display connectors near the Haptic Engine so, we’ll see if more cases appear.

HUAWEI Mate 40 Pro listed on Amazon Germany one day ahead of launch

Now let’s talk Huawei because at least at the time we recorded this video, the information is still not official. Thing is, even with the device not being official Amazon Germany just spilled the beans on some new details. The phone was listed on this site, revealing pretty much everything you need to know. According to the listing, the Mate 40 Pro will bring a 6.76in OLED display, with a pill shaped punch hole once again. It’ll be powered by the Kirin 9000 with the 24-core GPU which we covered yesterday, a 4400 mAh battery, and according to other leaks, 12GB of RAM while running EMUI 11. It brings a triple camera setup at the back that consists of a 50MP main sensor, a 20MP ultra wide and a 12MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Finally, the listing mentions that the Pro will start at €1199. And yes, you guessed it, no Google Play, but I do have to say that developers have been making some quick moves to adopt Huawei’s App Gallery, let’s see how it goes. .

OnePlus 9 might launch in March 2021

And guys, it’s barely been two weeks since we got the OnePlus 8T, which by the way, that review is coming pretty soon, but man, can you believe we already started hearing new things about the OnePlus 9? According to a new Android Central report, the 9 is codenamed “Lemonade” and will be launched in March next year. For context, the OnePlus 8 5G was launched in April this year so, this is pretty early and we also know that Samsung might launch earlier than usual so that could be one of the reasons. Now, let’s move on to the Nord Series for a little bit. We have a new tweet from Max J showing the Nord N10. Now, you know Max J doesn’t speak much but he tweeted a picture of the phone’s silhouette with a blue color variant and the characters for N10 scattered around. We’re expecting this phone to come out very soon with a Snapdragon 690, 6GB of RAM, a 90Hz display and a triple camera setup for under the $400 price mark. Now is it just me, or a lot of the 8T launch only makes the Nord lineup more confusing?

Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21 Ultra leak in a new video

Now let’s move on to Samsung and focus on the Galaxy S21, S30 or whatever it’s gonna be called. And guys, the phone is not out, unless you work for Samsung, we won’t know what the name is until the company announces it, so ease out on the comments. There’s been multiple reports, including supply chain that claim that we’ll be getting these phones significantly earlier than we usually do, around late January or early February. Now, we got some new rumors for the display and we actually like them. According to Ice Universe, the S21 and S21+ will bring “2D Screens” aka flat displays, while the S21 Ultra will stick to a curved display. He also mentioned that all four sides will be symmetrical, meaning no extra bezels on the chin. Now, those CAD renders we got yesterday were for the smaller variant of the S21 which will bring a nearly flushed camera hump, well… OnLeaks also posted a video for the S21 Ultra which brings another massive camera hump, at least it looks somewhat slimmer than the Note 20 Ultra but it’s still pretty large and this one packs 4 cameras instead of the three we saw yesterday.

Story of the day:

iPhone 12 reveals everything under the hood, along with a 5G issue

iPhone 12 Pro Max packs a smaller battery than the iPhone 11 Pro Max

But finally, the hottest news today have to do with the iPhone 12, and all the stuff Apple doesn’t tell you, but that we continue discovering. Let’s begin with battery capacity, and stick to the end to understand why. According to some new TENAA certifications, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 3687 mAh battery, that is nearly 300 mAh less than the iPhone 11 Pro Max which brought some pretty good battery life. The iPhone 12 Mini apparently packs a 2227 mAh battery and the iPhone 12 packs a 2815 mAh. We still don’t have details on the regular 12 Pro but, we assume it’ll be close to the 2815 mAh we’re getting on the regular 12. Now, we did hear that we were getting smaller batteries in the rumors, which made sense given the power efficiencies of 5 nanometers on the A14 Bionic. Thing is it hasn’t gone too well. A new report from Tom’s Guide claims that 5G drains the iPhone 12’s battery 20% faster when compared to the LTE. We have the full list with technical details in the links below but, they claim that these iPhones are a step back when compared to 5G Android phones, at least in battery life. The new iPhones also went through some teardowns, showing that we’re getting a smaller Taptic Engine, the design of the MagSafe Ring and the L-Shaped Logic Board.

HTC may finally deliver a device with Android 10 with the HTC Desire 20 Pro

Does anyone remember HTC? Well, earlier this year we heard that the company was under new leadership and we were expecting them to get back to their roots and launch some sort of flagship. An HTC Desire 20 Pro just popped up on Google Play support and now we get some of the specs. It’ll apparently be powered by a Snapdragon 665 SoC, 6GB of RAM and will run Android 10 out of the box. We got schematics for the design of this phone back in April, and now it was also certified by the NCC so we should see it some time soon. Thing is, fine that you wanna use the roots thing to bring a classic name like Desire, but where are the flagship elements in those roots HTC?

There is now a video of the upcoming Google Android TV streaming device

Yesterday we got some images of Google’s new dongle for Android TV which is codenamed Sabrina. Our friends over at XDA now have a recovered video that shows the device and the UI. The device will apparently be announced along with the Pixel 4a and it will allow you to Cast from your devices and control it with a separate remote that also allows for voice controls. It’s not exactly a Chromecast and it will work more like an Apple TV where it has it’s separate UI that you can control with the remote without the need to cast to it from your phone. It will also bring some features from their Smart Speakers like letting you answer your door from it or ask it different questions, we should be hearing more about it in the next few weeks.

Apple may be working on services bundle

Apple is apparently working on a bundle for their different services. 9to5Mac just found new files in the iOS 13.5.5 code that reference a “bundle offer” and a “bundle subscription”. The files are said to be related to the “management system of Apple’s own services subscriptions like Apple News+.” We’ve heard rumors of this since 2018 and it looks like it might happen, merging Apple Music, Apple TV+ and Apple News+ into the same bundle offering. If you combine the current prices of these services it amounts to $25 so we hope it’ll be somewhere around the $15 mark.

The Moto Razr 2 could arrive with larger displays

Recently we heard that Motorola was working on a successor for last year’s Moto RAZR and it looks like things are on track for that September launch. According to the Display Supply Chain Consultant’s CEO, both of the RAZR’s displays will be growing in size. He didn’t specify on the outer display but apparently the main display will adopt the same size from the Galaxy Z Flip, meaning a 6.7in display which is half an inch larger than the current RAZR. Other leaked specs include the Snapdragon 765G, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, Android 10 out of the box and a 48MP main camera.

Story of the day:

Apple could give us iPhones with low-power LTPO OLED displays in 2021

iPhone 13 prototype shows an under-screen camera, in-display Touch ID and a USB-C port

And finally the hottest news today have to do with iPhone, but we’re not exactly sure which one. If you remember last week we talked about lightning sticking around for another year because the next iPhone is going portless. Yeah hold on to that. Let me summarize it. Back on Monday we got some dummy units for the iPhone 12 which looked kinda sketchy since they’re pretty much a showcase of footprint and that’s it. Now we have some iPhone 13 dummies from the same source. We know that Apple is notorious for prototyping and we recently got some leaks that hinted to a port-less iPhone. These new leaks don’t follow on that and we should take this with a considerable amount of salt considering the timeline but, these do show a notch-less iPhone coming, which also brings a USB C port and a weird camera array that doesn’t really tell us anything about the cameras. Speaking of this notch-less display, a new DigiTimes report claims that Apple’s supply chain partners are developing OLED displays using LTPO backplane technology for the 2021 iPhones. LTPO is the technology that allows for a more power efficient display, paving the way for better battery life and that ProMotion display that we’re expecting for the upcoming iPhones. Most of the leaks we’ve covered from reliable sources hint to the 2020 iPhones bringing ProMotion features, but other sources claim that LTPO is essential for that and we might get it until 2021. I know, it’s all a mess..

iOS 13.5 brings Exposure Notification API, faster unlock experience while wearing a mask

Apple just started rolling out iOS 13.5 which brings some changes directly related to the pandemic. For starters, it brings the new notification exposure API they built with Google which is the foundation on which contact tracing apps will be developed. Other key features include Face ID now detecting that you’re wearing a mask and immediately asks for your password instead of it taking forever to realize, it also works with Apple Pay and other apps. We have the full list of changes in the description.

OnePlus might not launch another McLaren Edition phone in the future

Remember the phone with the coolest name ever? Yes, we’re talking about the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition. It seems we won’t have another one to mock as, OnePlus is no longer listed in the official McLaren partners page. None of the companies has made a statement yet but it seems that their partnership has come to an end, meaning that we won’t see any McLaren branded phone from OnePlus soon. It could be a mistake or part of a strategy but, the logo still isn’t back on the site. We’ll keep you posted in case we have official statements. Let’s hope that if they do decide to work together again, the name becomes a bit less ridiculous.

We have new details about the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 launch event

Now as for some sad possible updates from the pandemic, well, Samsung usually hosts two major Unpacked Events each year for their flagship releases but. I’m actually shocked we still got the February Unpacked. Thing is, for obvious reasons this year will be different. According to a report from South Korea, Samsung has already taken their decision and this will be the first time ever that the company is releasing a flagship online. We get tons of silent releases online from Samsung but they will obviously have some sort of event for the Note’s Unpacked. The event is still slated for August but we don’t have any specific dates yet. Some other products we might get at this event include obviously the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Fold 2 and some wearables.

Samsung Galaxy S21 could arrive with Chinese OLED displays

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Samsung could be ditching Samsung Display for the Galaxy S21 but, not entirely. According to some industry insiders, after a month of preliminary negotiations, Samsung just sent an official request for quotation to BOE which hints to the deal happening and also the fact that they are already working on the S21. Now, it isn’t clear if we’ll be getting a Galaxy S21 Ultra but, that one wouldn’t be using a BOE display because these orders are for 90Hz displays. They have also sent a quotation request to Samsung Display for 60Hz and 120Hz displays so, they aren’t leaving them completely. According to other insiders, Samsung is trying to get Samsung Display to lower the price on the panels and the threat of having BOE replace them might work.

Story of the day:

More rumors say that the Google Pixel 5 will have a mid-range processor

And finally, let’s call this the most interesting news today. I mean, Pixels have taken the spotlight for weeks now, though I wish they would sell as much as people care about the news. Thing is we’ve been getting several rumors that the Google Pixel 5 might not be a flagship. Yesterday we covered the fact that a Google survey showed that this phone might cost as low as $699. Now, XDA has found some new evidence in the Android 11 Developer Preview that hint to the Pixel 5 bringing the Snapdragon 765G processor. It isn’t clear if it will be the 765G or the new 768G but it is compatible to what they found in the new Google Camera APK for upcoming Pixel phones. The price tag also hints that this phone might not bring a Snapdragon 865 after all.
