No more BlackBerry Priv monthly updates, BB10 and BBOS support carries on

As weird as it sounds, we have bad news to report on the software support front for BlackBerry Priv owners, and good news for BB10 and BBOS users.

WhatsApp extends support for BlackBerry, Nokia until July 2017

Encrypted messaging app WhatsApp first announced its big move on the last day of February. We now know that the move will not fully take place before the last of the year as originally promised.

The Facebook-owned company has updated its original post that announced the end of WhatsApp support on several older mobile software platforms.

But if you have a Nokia S40, a Symbian S60 or a BlackBerry OS (including BB10) device, fret a little less — WhatsApp announced it will continue support for your device through June 30, 2017.

Those of you who have smartphones running any version of Android earlier than 2.3 Gingerbread will still be locked out at the end of the year — and even then, good luck firing up the Google Play Store. Windows Phone 7 and iOS 6 users will also find the same to happen to you. The company is advising that you upgrade your phone.

With over a billion users, WhatsApp is turning the page on millions of them — beginning in just days.

Samsung Focus to launch with Galaxy Note 6 as a sort of BlackBerry Hub

It’s been too long since BlackBerry OS got wide appreciation, especially as we’ve turned from BB10. But one good vestige of the platform that’s made the move to Android was the BlackBerry Hub — a river of communications, calendar and reminder heads-ups and memorandums at a glance. The feature ...

Should BlackBerry kill BB10 now?

BlackBerry is a confusing company these days, which makes it a natural subject for the Weekend Debate. BlackBerry has gone through a few iterations while reinventing itself. We have seen BB10, physical keyboards, and most recently, a jump to Android. It’s this last point that I want to take a look at as we look into 2016 and try to determine just what BlackBerry has up its sleeve for this. Specifically, is it time to kill off BB10 and go all in with Android?NaturallyRight off the bat this seems like an easy answer. Of course it should. But when you look more closely, the waters get ...

3 great BlackBerry 10 features (that might die with it)

In 2016, most chatter that includes the word “BlackBerry” is focused on the company’s Priv handset, and for good reason. As BlackBerry’s first Android phone, the Priv is a dramatic shift in strategy (and a tacit admission that the company’s previous one wasn’t working). As one of the few Androids with a physical keyboard, it’s also a sorely-needed bit of novelty in a landscape otherwise dominated by ever-homogenizing slabs. Despite its flaws I quite like the ...

Chen: BlackBerry 10 lives on in 2016

While BlackBerry has eyes for its future in Android, it’s not going to be leaving behind its own platform as we had first been led to believe. In fact, CEO John Chen took to the INSIDE BlackBerry blog to let the public know that software development will go on for BlackBerry 10. Just like he said when the

If you’re a Windows Phone user chances are that your preferred cloud storage service is Microsoft’s own offering, SkyDrive (now called OneDrive). Verizon BlackBerry Z30 press render leaks

Announced on September 18, the BlackBerry Z30 visited the FCC, unveiling LTE bands, at the end of the same month. The phone might be available in some markets outside of the US, but we’re now seeing a leak which suggests Verizon is getting ready to add the latest from Canada to its line-up.
