Little known Chinese company previews bezelless Maze Alpha phone, but its chin looks massive

At first glance, the upcoming Maze Alpha looks truly "world-widening." But it's probably just an illusion, with a thick bottom bezel in tow.

Is a bezel-less screen for the iPhone 7 a good move?

Apple just got done introducing its latest iPhone, the iPhone SE and since we can’t let the rumor mill go silent for even a minute, let’s talk about the iPhone 7, shall we? More specifically, a lot of rumors have been pointing at the possibility of the iPhone 7 having an edge-to-edge bezel-less display. Of course, the actual definition of “bezel-less” is a little on the fuzzy side. Some have said that the bezel-less iPhone will have a curved glass display that will fall off on the edges, not dissimilar to the Galaxy S7 Edge. The primary difference is that the iPhone would not have ...

Weibo shows off iPhone 7 with edge-to-edge display port

We find ourselves on Weibo yet again with something that makes itself out to be a “real iPhone 7.” And beyond the flavor text and intense watermarking comes a claim we can’t substantiate just yet.In the accompanying Weibo post, the original ...

LG’s latest smartphone screen asks, “bezels? What bezels?”

This year has already brought us some smartphones with stupifingly tiny bezels, giving us phones that appear more like a screen floating in our hands than bulky handsets of yore; look no further than that surprisingly compelling Sharp Aquos Crystal. Other manufacturers are similarly interested in pushing boundaries (no pun intended) with bezels, working our way down to zero. The latest to share news of a component that hopes to make thick bezels a thing of the past is LG, with a 5.3-inch 1080p panel ...

Screen to bezel ratios matter more than you’d think

Back in May, I asked an interesting question, one many have probably pondered themselves, “Will your next phone be bigger or smaller?”For whatever reason, in today’s smartphone market, “bigger” has nearly become synonymous with “better”. Each year, every smartphone manufacturer’s flagships are larger than the previous model. The Galaxy S III had a 4.8-inch display; the Galaxy S4 had a 5-inch display, and the Galaxy S5 now has a 5.1-inch display. The same ...

2014 will mark the dying days of the bezel

Anyone who has been around cell phones since the “early days” can tell you about an interesting phenomenon. Early cellular phones were huge. Some were installed in your car, others were neatly packaged into a suitcase that you could carry around with you. After that, the race was on to make them smaller and lighter weight. Eventually, whoever had the smallest cellphone was the “winner” (of what, we’re not quite sure, but at least they had bragging rights). Then smartphones came along and the trend reversed. Previously small phones started to get bigger and ...

Loving edge-to-edge screens? Get used to buttons on the back

We’ve been begging for it for quite some time: screens that span the entire front of our phones. The hated “bezel” used to be a place where we could hold on to our devices without accidentally touching the screen, and there was a point in time when the bezel was a necessary component to actually hold our screens in place, with the screen and digitizer both recessed behind it. Fast-forward to today and our phones have a single slab of glass that occupies most of the front of the device. The bezel is now an area of black around the screen that taunts us. We want that area ...

What did bezels ever do to you?

You know, over the past year, there’s been a recurring theme in mobile technology. That theme is bezel reduction. This makes me sad. Sure a shrinking bezel generally means a larger screen in a smaller body, but the cost, in my opinion is too great. We saw this recently with the LG G2. We see it again with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The bezels on phones today are practically non-existent. There is just the slightest hint of a black line on either side of the screen and that’s it. This is a good thing, because it allows for a larger screen (5.7” as opposed to the Note ...
