Samsung may supply its own fingerprint sensors

Many of the fingerprint sensors you see out in the smartphone world these days come from a few sources. If you have an Apple device, you’re more than likely using an Ascentek product. Scanners on other devices could be from the US’s Synaptics or from Sweden’s Fingerprint Cards.

And, according to industrial sources to the Electronic Times, Samsung Electronics is exploring the field as well. AMOLED screens, memory chips, now fingerprint scanners — this company seemingly wants to provide it all to other OEMs.

The company has been working since last year towards a low-to-mid-range solutions before making its own sensors to equip flagships, including its own Note and Galaxy S devices. It is currently sourcing its own CMOS sensor and applying an analysis algorithm bought from Sweden-based Precise Biometrics.

Samsung has not confirmed these moves, but regardless, the fingerprint sensor field has widened in Asia as other manufacturers such as LG Innotek, Crucialtec and Haptrix are all competing for pieces of the low-priced Chinese market.
