AirPods Max vs Bose 700: Which should you buy?

AirPods Max launched at a surprising price point of $549. Hence, it is natural to compare them with the industry-leading pair of headphones. Here’s an AirPods Max vs Bose 700 comparison, despite the glaring price gap between the two. While the former is a recently-launched product that goes for $549, the latter is available below the $400 price tag. It mostly sells for $379 without a discount and $339 with a discount. How do both of these stack up? Is the AirPods Max worth the extra money? Let’s find out in our comparison.

AirPods Max vs Bose 700: Design

AirPods Max vs Bose 700

Both of these headphones have different aesthetics. The AirPods Max features curved rectangular cups as opposed to the oval cups found on the Bose 700. Plus, the ear cups on the Max attach magnetically, which is an easier change-process when compare to the Bose counterpart. Both have a stainless steel frame. While in the case of the AirPods Max the stems meet the top of the cans, the stems on Bose 700 bisect the plastic ear cups. Coming to the headband, the former has a mesh canopy layer, whereas the latter has a cushiony layer on top. The AirPods Max is heavier at 384.8 grams, while the Bose 700 weighs just 254 grams. That said, both of them are inconvenient since neither of them collapses.

Color

The AirPods Max offers more playful color options with Space Gray, Silver, Sky Blue, Green, and Pink, while the 700s come in Black, Luxe Silver, Soapstone, and Triple Midnight color options.

Controls

The AirPods Max doesn’t offer touch controls. Unusually, it features the Apple Watch’s Digital Crown for volume controls. The headphones have this crown and a dedicated Noise Cancelation button to switch between ANC on/off and Transparency modes. By contrast, the Bose 700 have both control buttons and a capacitive touch panel.

Bose 700 case and in box accessories

Case

The AirPods Max comes with an unusually useless case. It is smaller than the competition, but it doesn’t serve a purpose other than to place the headphones on standby. In this case, you cannot carry any wires or other accessories. As for the Bose 700, they come included with travel accessories and the case protects the whole product.

AirPods Max vs Bose 700: Performance

Both these headphones are equipped with a wide range of features. The AirPods Max has Active Noise Cancelation, Spatial audio, top-class audio quality, and more. On the other hand, the Bose 700 is known as the king of ANC. Let’s focus on all these aspects in more detail.

Sound Quality and ANC

The AirPods Max sports 40mm drivers within the ear cups, which deliver an excellent audio experience. Apple has used a custom-designed dynamic 40mm driver for the AirPods Max. They vibrate to the beat in a way that doesn’t deter from the music or video, making the sound more immersive than the Pro. It also has a dual-neodymium ring magnet motor, which is claimed to be modeled after the ones you’d find in high-end floor speakers. The spatial audio is amazing and better than the AirPods Pro on these pair of headphones.

Bose 700 lifestyle

Coming to the Bose 700, the sound quality is on par with the Apple counterpart. They feature 8 integrated microphones to block out ambient noise without affecting audio quality. There’s a Conversation mode (transparency mode) that lets you hear what’s outside your headphones without taking them off.

Active Noise Cancelation effectively cuts out the background noise. Both these audio devices feature ANC. In the words of our own Jaime Rivera, ANC on the AirPods Max is “epic.” These come with 9 microphones, and Apple’s H1 chip for computational audio performance.

Voice Assistant

One big let down with the AirPods Max is that you are stuck with the Apple ecosystem. Hence, this is a product targeted at people who already own an Apple device like the iPhone or a Mac. The company offers Siri as a voice assistant on its pair of headphones. On the other hand, you get more freedom with the Bose 700. These can accommodate your preferred voice assistant including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Siri.

Battery life

The AirPods Max is claimed to last up to 20 hours on a single charge with ANC and spatial audio enabled. Similarly, the Bose counterpart is slated to last up to 20 hours as well. However, you’ll have to juice up the Max with a Lightning cable as opposed to the USB Type-C found on the 700. Notably, the former doesn’t switch off and you place it in the case to have them in standby mode. Moreover, the AirPods Max lose about 2% battery life per hour, while sitting out of the case when not in use. It is not the case with Bose 700.

AirPods Max vs Bose 700: Which one to buy?

AirPods Max are priced well above the Bose 700. They offer advanced computational audio and seamless integration, and a better integration with the Apple ecosystem. However, it might or might not be enough to take on the Bose 700 with their industry-leading ANC. Both of these headphones offer similar battery life, but the 700 might last longer since there is an option to switch them go. At the end of the day, both of these products are of high-quality, and you can’t go wrong with either of them.

Bose unveils Sport Open Earbuds that will keep you aware of your surroundings

Bose has today launched a new pair of true wireless earbuds with a unique focus – keeping users aware of their surroundings. The new Bose Sport Open Earbuds have an open-ear design that ensures users are aware of their surroundings. The earbuds have an enclosure that sits above the ear canal with virtually no skin contact, instead of going in or over the ear canal for transmitting sound waves. In an age where ANC is a highly sought after feature on headphones and wireless earbuds, Bose is targeting a niche audience here that is after ambient awareness.

No ANC, but that's the whole point

The company promises that even when users are listening to music at loud volume, they will still be able to hear ambient sounds, but others around them won’t hear what they are listening to. There is a contoured earhook to keep the earbuds in place during workouts or rigorous physical activity, and you won’t have to worry about sweat exposure either as the Bose Sport Open Earbuds are IPX4-rated

“Each enclosure uses a tiny dipole transducer placed and positioned for loud-and-clear personal audio that stays at the ear — and “cancels” out everywhere else,” the company adds. The left bud has a physical button to summon the virtual assistant of your choice, while a button on the right earbud is there for controlling music playback, handling calls, and powering them on or off. Wireless connectivity on the Bose Sport Open Earbuds is handled by Bluetooth 5.1, and they’re compatible with both Android and iOS devices with a companion app also on the table for deeper controls.

Bose Sport Open Earbuds are now up for pre-orders at $199.95

Bose touts a battery life of 8 hours with a single charge. You’ll get a separate charging base and a protective case in the retail package. Talking about use case scenarios, the company says its latest offering is tailored for outdoor walks, cycling, and hiking to name a few. Priced at $199.95, the Bose Sport Open Earbuds are now up for pre-orders from the official Bose website and Best Buy, while shipments are expected to begin mid-January.

Bose unveils noise-canceling QuietComfort Earbuds and cheaper Sport Earbuds

Bose has today launched two new pairs of true wireless earbuds – the premium QuietComfort Earbuds and the fitness-centric Sport Earbuds. The former carries over the QuietComfort legacy of Bose’s renowned noise-calling headphones and brings them to the true wireless earbuds form factor for the first time. Bose says the noise-canceling system on the QuietComfort Earbuds can act to negate external noise in less than a fraction of a millisecond. Notably, they offer 11 levels of noise cancelation depending on how much ambiance sound users want to pass through. The company also assures that users won’t notice a drop in bass or other audio attributes at low volume levels.

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds

The aforementioned is achieved using the in-house Active EQ technology which is claimed to automatically balance the lows and highs, so that the music you hear has a consistent balance irrespective of the volume. The QuietComfort Earbuds come with IPX4 certification and are claimed to last 12 hours on a single charge, while the charging case adds enough juice for two more cycles. The new Bose earbuds also support wireless charging. You can pick them up in two colors – Triple Black and Soapstone. The QuietComfort Earbuds cost $279.95 and are now up for pre-order from Bose’s official website.

Bose Sport Earbuds

Talking about the Bose Sport Earbuds, they are targeted at folks with an active lifestyle, but they miss out on noise cancelation ability. Bose says that their proprietary StayHear Max tip helps the earbuds stay in place during vigorous workouts. They are IPX4 certified as well, and support both touch and tap gestures. These earbuds can last up to 5 hours on a single charge, while the charging case adds another 10 hours of music playback. The Bose Sport Earbuds are now up for pre-order priced at $179.95 and come in a choice of three colors – Baltic Blue, Glacier White and Triple Black.

Bose gives up on AR development

Bose is the latest company to pin its hopes on AR tech. The company is shutting down its ambitious Bose AR program. Protocol reports that key Bose AR employees have left the company. Moreover, partners have been informed that their apps will stop working in the coming weeks.

“Bose AR didn’t become what we envisioned,” a Bose spokesperson told Protocol. “It’s not the first time our technology couldn’t be commercialized the way we planned, but components of it will be used to help Bose owners in a different way. We’re good with that. Because our research is for them, not us.”

However, the development doesn’t come as a surprise. Senior VP and AR advocate John Gordon left in summer 2019. The company shut down its public-facing AR developer kit in April and AR references too were taken off the Bose site around then.

Samsung Money by Sofi will come to the US later this summer

Samsung just launched a new mobile money management system which pretty much competes with the Apple Card. It’s called Samsung Money by SoFi but unlike the Apple Card, it isn’t really a credit card. It’s actually more of a bank account or credit union where you get a MasterCard debit card that doesn’t show any of your information and it works with the Samsung Pay app. Your Samsung Money account will be FDIC insured for $1.5M and users benefit from Samsung’s “defense-grade” security from Samsung Knox. It’ll be available later this summer exclusively for US customers who own a Galaxy smartphone, Samsung promises a secure experience with no account fees.

The iPhone 11 is now the most popular smartphone in the world

We got some quarter results from Omdia and it just confirms that Apple made a big dent on the market with the iPhone 11. Last year the iPhone XR was the number 1 smartphone for Q1 with 13.6M units shipped, but this year the iPhone 11 surpassed it with 19.5M units, despite the pandemic. The phone that follows is the Samsung Galaxy A51 which sold 6.8M units and the iPhone XR is still in the top 5 with 4.7M units. Omdia still anticipates however, that smartphone sales will be down for the rest of the year due to the pandemic so numbers might change for Q2.

Google reveals Android 11 Beta Launch Show schedule on June 3. Here’s how to watch

Google is finally releasing the first Public Beta of Android 11 on June 3rd during their Beta Launch Show. If you want, you’ll be able to attend via YouTube through the Android Developers channel. The event will focus on the different announcements related to all the new features coming with Android 11, as well as Q&As with Google experts and more. We were also expecting to hear something about the Pixel 4a but with the recent delays that apparently won’t be the case. You can check for the events details in the links in our description. It’s not clear which devices will support the public beta on day one, but if you’re not using a Pixel, yeah that’s gonna be a tough one.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could be launched in August, as it reportedly enters mass production

There’s been several rumors that we’ll finally be getting the Galaxy Fold’s successor with the Note 20 this year. Now we got a new report from a South Korean publication that claims that the Fold 2 has just entered mass production. This means we could start getting some official details as early as June. According to the Insiders, the Fold 2 will bring Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass and it will cost less, despite upgrading to a 120Hz display. Recently we got some patents from Samsung which described how Samsung plans to make Foldables water resistant but it’s not clear if the Fold 2 will bring this feature. The company is expecting to sell 2.5-3M units this year, surpassing the original Fold.

Story of the day:

We may have to wait until November for the iPhone 12 series

It looks like we will have to wait for the iPhone 12 line-up after all this year. According to a new report, this year’s iPhones might be launched until November due to the pandemic. The report also predicts that Apple has 35M units in production for Q2 of 2020 which is 13% lower than what they had last year, but giving the time, we’re not sure if they’re talking about iPhone 12 production, which would be kind of early, or iPhone 11 production which is likely to take a dip. Regardless, we’re expecting 4 different iPhones, all 4 with OLED displays, 5G connectivity, a smaller notch and a boxier design which is reminiscent of the iPhone 4. We’re also hearing of different spec bumps like up to 6GB of RAM in the Pro models and the base storage at 128GB.
