Curved OLED iPhone 8 rumors rehashed yet again, new USB-C gossip calls for Lightning exclusion

It's no big secret that Apple probably has a curved OLED iPhone 8 in the pipeline, but what if its Lightning port will go away to make room for USB Type-C?

100 million plastic OLED screens for the iPhone 8, says Samsung insider

Samsung has long been told to be the main supplier of OLED displays for Apple’s iPhone 8. But instead of shipping over its more conventional Super AMOLED displays, rumors are now pointing to plastic OLED displays.

A source to The Korea Herald said Samsung Display will use the more flexible OLEDs — found in the LG G Flex devices — as opposed to ones made out of glass to make up to 100 million curved units to ship to Apple for its highly speculative high-end iPhone 8.

Samsung uses P-OLEDs in its curved screen “edge” devices. All Galaxy S8 units are rumored to feature “edge” screens. The chaebol is said to have enough manufacturing capacity for Apple in addition to serving its own needs. Other, lower-end versions will feature LCDs from LG Display and Japan Display — both companies are vying to provide foldable screens to customers soon.

Apple will likely begin to diversify its LED screen sourcing in 2018 when more manufacturers come online with their foundries.

Analysts don’t see curved-screen Galaxy S8 driving demand

The rumor mill tells us not to look for too many axes when it comes to the Galaxy S8. Both 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch versions of Samsung’s spring 2017 flagship should feature dual-curved screens with lots of screen and little bezel.

But Korean financial analysts are expressing doubts on whether or not the lack of a flat screen or finger maneuverability will really get consumers excited.

“There appears to be no high demand for dual-edge screens because some still find them inconvenient because they mistakenly touch the sides of the smartphones,” said Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade analyst Choo Dae-young. “The utility of a bezel-less display does not seem that much higher for small, portable smartphones compared to televisions.”

Foldable smartphones may come from Samsung to better improve usage efficiency.

Alas, it might not be about cross between dexterity and utility, but about eye-catching design — and you can bet that money is being spent to refine it. The Galaxy S8 is also being considered the comeback phone for Samsung as it offers deep discounts for former Note 7 owners relieved of their phones by a recall.

We’d love for you to chime in on whether you’d prefer a phone with intense focus on the screen or something a little more palmable. Our Twitter poll on the subject is on through December 13 at 5am Eastern.

Release date for Honor Magic concept phone is December 16

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

It’s late in 2016 and all these Chinese manufacturers have started to get conceptual on us. And no, not like those gastropubs that inject nitrogen into ground meat and ground peas into dust for you to inhale.

One of those OEMs is said to be Huawei subsidiary Honor. A trip to its Chinese site these days will lead you to a splash GIF, showing off a world of mysticism and whatnot, along with teaser text to expect big things with the “Honor Magic” on December 16.

Now, what could Honor be talking about? And why is Honor, not Huawei, bringing this concept phone to us?

Well, it’s believed by Weibo tech talkers that Huawei wanted to reduce its risk in introducing what’s rumored to be a phone that has a curved display from Samsung, a battery that fills up halfway with five minutes on the charger and, most importantly, no camera nor speaker on the device body. It set the launch of this “Magic” apart from the company’s more traditional Mate 9 releases and moved its domain to the edgier Honor brand.

We’re not entirely sure if we’re talking about a complete ecosystem of modular, attachable accessories. Perhaps these limited accessories are freewheeeling (and none of those factors are mutually exclusive from each other), but if the rumors pull through, then we are definitely out of the range of the Moto Z.

Sit tight, this is going to be a crazy December… at least, in China.
