Pocketnow Weekly 052: ’twas the day before the Lumia

It’s not every day you schedule a podcast the day before one of the biggest Windows Phone announcements in the platform’s history – but given our plans to host a special-edition Pocketnow Live event covering Nokia’s NYC event tomorrow, we thought it best to get the Weekly out of the way ahead of time. That doesn’t mean we don’t talk Nokia – indeed, we’ve got Chief News Editor Stephen Schenck on the air with us this week to discuss what it’s been like to follow the story of the EOS/1020/909, probably one of the most widely-leaked devices ...

After eight months, the Lumia 920 camera is still my favorite vacation companion

As you’ve probably heard, we’ve got some Nokia news to look forward to this week. If the rumors and leaks are to be believed, the company is gearing up to drop quite a smartphone on the world come Thursday – and whether it’s called the EOS, 909, 1020, or something else, it’s a safe bet its name won’t be the big story. Taking center stage will most likely be its super-sized camera module, which at an assumed 41MP seems guaranteed to blow the pants off every other device ...

Pocketnow Weekly 051: Baby, you’re a firework

It’s weird when holidays fall in the middle of the week, because either you’re kicking off a long weekend with the special celebration, or you’re returning to work the next day with a fuzzy brain, a sunburn, and sand in your hair. We’re in the latter situation this week at Pocketnow, the American portion of the team coming down from a day of BBQ and a night of fireworks … but in our case, it’s a good thing. Because today’s the day for our weekly mobile tech podcast, and we love us some mobile-tech podcasting. We hope you do, too, because ...

Nokia Lumia 1020 for AT&T tentatively leaked in alleged press render. Or is it the Lumia 909?

Nokia Lumia 1020 is the rumored name for the upcoming 41-megapixel goodness we’ve seen leaked as the EOS, Elvis, and Zoom. Previous leaked images tried to depict the looks of the phone but thanks to a recent leak we now have what appears to be a press render of the phone on AT&T. Pictured above is the EOS for AT&T, at least according to reports. If you’re having trouble differentiating it from the Lumia 920, for instance, we won’t blame you. However, the back — the one which we’re still ...

Carl Zeiss rebranded to ZEISS, early Nokia EOS leak already featured the new name

Carl Zeiss has rebranded itself to ZEISS for better brand recognition and consistency. Those who are fans of photography, or high-end Nokia phones, already know Carl Zeiss. The camera-lens-maker (and not only) published the company decision on its own blog, also giving examples on how the brand will appear on future products. Interestingly, an early Nokia EOS (or Elvis, or Lumia 1020, or Nokia ZOOM, we don’t know, really) leak has featured the new name. As seen above, the purported back of the upcoming 41-megapixel phone, to be unveiled in July 11, wears the “PureView ...

Has Nokia tapped Justin Bieber to help launch EOS/Lumia 1020? (Nope)

We currently find ourselves less than two weeks away from July 11, when unless Nokia has been pulling an awful practical joke on us all, the company will launch its long-awaited 41-megapixel PureView Lumia at a New York event. At least, Nokia hasn’t been keeping the event’s focus much of a secret, and continues to drop hints of the EOS/Lumia 1020 we expect to see there. As we’ve mentioned,

Nokia Zoom moniker trademark under examination

Nokia Zoom is the latest name we can add to the list of monikers that can potentially describe the phone to be unveiled on July 11. We’ve initially heard about EOS, then Elvis, and, more recently, a Lumia 1020 denomination started popping up on the interwebs. However, Nokia Zoom is the company’s latest trademark, and, since the official invite features zoom all over, we think this might be something related. The ...

Windows Phone is in serious trouble if the Nokia EOS isn’t HUGE

We’re on the cusp of a what promises to be a very interesting period in the story of Windows Phone. In just over two weeks, on July 11, Nokia will almost certainly announce its first 41-megapixel PureView Windows Phone handset. Based on the interest that rumors and leaks of this hardware – first referred to by codename EOS, and now likely to arrive as the Lumia 1020 – has been generating, Nokia could be sitting on the most popular Windows Phone model ...

Nokia’s official name suggested for PureView EOS Lumia

July is just around the corner, and a little more than a week into month, on July 11, we’re expecting Nokia to finally draw back the curtain on its 41-megapixel PureView Lumia smartphone. Leaks have given us a strong idea of what to expect from the phone, but there have still been several lingering questions, including under just what name the hardware might arrive. Thus far, we’ve been referring to it by the codename EOS, but it seemed clear the phone would need a standard ...

Would you like an Android-powered camera-phone like the Nokia 808 PureView or EOS?

There used to be a significant divide between “good” cameras and “point-and-shoot” varieties. Today, thanks to modern technology, that division is growing smaller. In the past you could tell a hard-core photographer from an amateur by the size of their lens and the features on their camera. Today we have smartphones that can all take decent pictures, and a few that can take fabulous ones. What’s made all this possible? Technology. Sensors have gotten smaller and more sensitive. Storage devices are getting smaller in size, larger in capacity, and faster in ...

Pocketnow Weekly 049: Samsung keeps making stuff, we keep squawking about it (Samsung Premiere 2013)

In the food service industry, when you’re a server who’s been slammed with too many customers and can’t keep up with the demand, you’re said to be “in the weeds.” On a podcast, that same expression means something quite different. It means you’ve wandered so far from your intended topic (in this case, mobile technology) that you’ve found yourself in the far-flung wilderness talking about anything but (in this case, sports cars, British accents, and the adult film industry). But while we do spend a fair amount of time in OT land on ...

International EOS possibly revealed as Nokia RM-875

A few days back, we checked out the FCC paperwork for Nokia’s model RM-877, and between the handset’s dimensions and the mention of a “camera grip” accessory, it sure looked like we had a strong contender for the EOS. That time, the band coverage seemed to suggest we were looking at a phone for AT&T, which was already rumored to be getting an EOS exclusive. Today we have another Nokia smartphone getting its FCC clearance, and this time it just might be the ...
