HUAWEI Developer Conference 2020 starts on September 10, exciting announcements ahead

Huawei just announced that their Developer’s Conference will be happening this year on September 10th and going on until the 12th. Sure we’re expecting products like laptops, new smartwatches, their new FreeBuds Pro, and the possibility of a new chip that we usually see at IFA, though probably no smartphones. That said, I think what’s most important here is software. If you think of it this is their developer conference and a big chunk of the story will be their future with Android. How much the AppGallery will continue to expand to serve the needs of consumers that want to continue trusting the Huawei brand.. I mean, they still are the largest smartphone maker in the world as of last quarter. And then there’s the question about Harmony OS. Just a few days ago we discussed the rumors that the company wants to make a major push here as part of their strategy, even if Android is still in the picture. The keynote will happen on their website with Richard Yu talking about their ecosystem and other products, we’ll keep you posted. Not gonna lie, I’m curious to see what the next steps are. Expect our full coverage starting tonight, and a recap on tomorrow’s Pocketnow Daily.

Microsoft says Xbox Series X costs $499, reveals availability details of its next-gen consoles

Yesterday Microsoft showed us the Xbox Series S and well, we thought that was the only information we were getting from the company until later this year. Well that was not the case at all, they just gave us official pricing, availability dates and more. Earlier today the took to Twitter to announce that the Xbox Series X will cost $499, while the Series S will cost the $299 we mentioned yesterday. They will be available on November 10th but, pre-orders will start on September 22nd. They also announced that they will have an Xbox All Access financing plan which will let you pay $24.99 for the Series S and $34.99 for the Series X. Xbox All Access basically let’s you pay that set amount for the Xbox and 24 Months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which includes around 100 games.

We have new leaked renders of the LG Wing

We’re five days away from the official announcement of the LG Wing so, leaks keep coming. Now we got some high quality renders of the phone from Evan Blass showing stuff we hadn’t seen. In this render we can see the back of the phone which houses a camera array that kinda looks like the regular Galaxy Note 20 and a color variant that reminds us of the Galaxy S10. We can also see the phone in it’s “T-Pose” state but, in this particular image there seems to be some significant bezels between the two displays, we hope that doesn’t make it to the final product. The LG Wing is launching soon with the Snapdragon 765G and a price tag around the $1000 or $1600 mark.

Apple strikes back, Epic Games now being sued for breach of contract damages

A couple of days ago, we covered how it seemed that the whole Apple vs Epic dilemma was over, even with the lawsuit still going on. However, Epic wasn’t giving up and they were asking for an injunction to get Fortnite back in the App Store. Well, Apple just decided to make another Thanos-type move. Cupertino just filed some counter-claims, where they’re requesting damages for breach of contract and other counts. They’re trying to get all of the money that was collected by Fortnite through their separate payment system. Apple claims that Epic’s lawsuit is “nothing more than a basic disagreement over money”. They stated that “Even if Epic are portraying themselves as a corporate Robin Hood, in reality they are a multi-billion dollar company that simply want to pay nothing for the tremendous value they derive from the App Store. Their demands of special treatment and cries for retaliation cannot be reconciled by their breaching of contract and their own practices, as they have bundles of up to $100 for “VBucks”. We don’t know how much Apple is asking for in damages but Epic has apparently made $600M from the App Store. As for now, we have to wait until the September 28th hearing to see what’s next, unless we get some newer developments before that.

Motorola RAZR 5G brings an upgraded 48MP camera and faster Snapdragon 765G chip

And after months of leaks and rumors, the Moto RAZR 5G is finally here. It brings a 6.2in folding display along with a 2in cover display which the company is constantly updating for new tasks like replying to texts, getting directions, media controls and more . This new phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 2800 mAh battery paired with 15W of “Turbo Power” charging. On the camera department, we have a single 48MP main shooter that’s capable of doing 4K video at 30fps and 1080p slow-mo video at 240fps. It also brings a 20MP selfie shooter on the notch at the front. It runs on Android 10, supports sub-6GHz 5G. It’ll be available for $1399 on AT&T and T-Mobile and unlocked from multiple retailers later this fall on, Blush Gold, Liquid Mercury and Polished Graphite color variants.

Story of the day:

Live images of Google Pixel 5s have leaked online, adding to more confusion

Yeah, we have a very confusing leak of the Google Pixel 5 “s”? The leaked image comes from a Mexican Tech Radio Host on Twitter and he also shared a video of it but it’s private now. According to our friends over at XDA and the IMEI barcode, this is a Pixel 5, but it’s not entirely clear as to why it’s listed as the 5s on the device, but it’s not the first time that name has popped up either. On the image we can see the phone laying down, showing off the camera array and the display. It looks way too similar to the 4a, as probably the only difference is the size and the double cameras on this one. It also brings the fingerprint sensor at the back and the different Google logo shows that this is a pre-production unit. According to the leaks, we’ll be getting two different variants for this phone, one for sub-6GHz which will also be more affordable and another one for mmWave 5G which will apparently be the 5s. We’re expecting this phone to launch later this month or in October, with the Snapdragon 765G, a 6in OLED display running at 90Hz, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, no leaks on the price tag yet.

Google Pixel 4, Apple’s 27-inch iMac and more devices are on sale today

Deals. The Google Pixel 4 is currently $250 off on Amazon, this leaves the entry level variant for $549 shipped. The 4 XL is also $89 off, leaving that at $810 shipped. Best Buy actually has up to $300 off on it, leaving it at $500 but, the catch is that you have to activate it immediately. These phones are discontinued so, right now is your chance to buy. The 27in 5K iMac is $123 off, leaving the 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD variant for $1875. If you want to laugh a little, the Pro XDR Display is $500 off at B&H, leaving it at $4500, so you can pretty much get the stand for half off. We have more deals on Gaming headsets, Acer monitors and more in the links below.

Sony’s Xperia 5 II appears in leaked render, shows off familiar design with a tall display

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a global flagship from Sony but, it looks like the company is back at it. We have a new high resolution render from Evan Blass of the Sony Xperia 5 II. This naming scheme hints that this might be a minor upgrade of the Xperia 5 which launched last year, right about this time at IFA. It’ll retain Sony’s 21:9 aspect ratio with the thin side bezels, and the even top and bottom bezels which aren’t too slim. It also brings a triple camera setup at the back with the same “ZEISS T” branding. This is a teal color variant but, sadly we don’t have any details on the internals or a possible launch date just yet so we’ll have to keep you posted on that one.

New LG Wing with rotating dual screen has been caught on video

We know that LG has been reluctant to adopt foldables when most of the competition is at least testing the waters with this market, and by the way, this is the company with the roll able TV. Instead we’ve been getting dual screen devices like my personal favorite, the Velvet. However, we do know that they are working on a rotating screen device codenamed “Wing“. Well, Android Authority recently published a 10 second clip of the phone fully working on someone’s car. On the video you can see him getting map directions on the primary display while controlling the music with the secondary screen. After that, the driver also takes a phone call on the secondary display. Something interesting here is that there seems to be no notch or punch hole on the display. This device is most likely targeted at people who want a multi-tasking device so it might be a good balance between phones like the Z Fold 2 and the Surface Duo.

Samsung is reportedly working on three new foldable devices already

We’re still waiting for the official launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 but, now we get even more rumors of Samsung’s roadmap for their foldables. According to a tipster on Twitter, Samsung will be launching at least three new foldables. The list starts with the Galaxy Z Fold Lite which will apparently bring a CPI display instead of the UTG which we get on the newer variants. Next up, we got the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which we talked about yesterday and this one will apparently bring S Pen features and, this tipster mentions it as well and according to him, it might bring a hefty price tag. Finally, there’s a Z Fold S which will apparently be a new form factor that folds both in and out. We don’t exactly know when we’ll be getting these device but, if Samsung does get rid of the Note line with the S21, this could be Samsung’s fall line-up.

Fortnite on Apple devices is losing cross-play support with the new season on August 27

Epic Games confirms Fortnite’s next season won’t come to iPhones, iPads, and Macs

Let’s get back to the Epic vs Apple drama because, it’s getting really interesting now. Epic released a blog post today where they said that “Apple is blocking Fortnite updates and new installs on the App Store, and has said they will terminate our ability to develop Fortnite for Apple devices. As a result, Fortnite’s new Chapter 2, Season 4 will not be released on iOS and Macs tomorrow“. This means that if you have Fortnite on your iPad, iPhone or Mac, you’ll technically still be able to play but, here’s where it gets interesting. Epic also announced that there will no longer be cross-play between Apple devices and PCs, Consoles and Android phones as, there will be two separate versions of the game. One for iOS and Macs, with the older season and no updates, and one for the rest of the community with the latest and greatest. This is kind of a weird development considering that to play on the Mac, you download it through the Epic installer and not the App Store. Again, Apple is still ready to welcome Epic back, once they remove their in-app payment option but, it looks like Epic wants to take a separate route. There’s also a hearing happening in a month so, we’ll see how this ends.

Story of the day:

Here’s your first hands-on video of the iPhone 12 Pro Max

And finally the most interesting news have to do with iPhone 12 Pro, or at least one of the variants, and the idea of 120hz on the display. If you remember, yesterday we did cover the different screenshots with the camera settings and the 120Hz display. And sure we know some of you might not necessarily believe a screenshot given how easy it is to tinker with them. Well right after, Jon Prosser owned his leaks by later posting a full hands on video with the phone showing off other details. Also, keep in mind that this is a Production Validating and Testing unit of the iPhone 12 Pro Max so, these features might still not make it to the final product. On it we get to see the person turn on the high refresh rate and the adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, he also browsed through the camera options that we covered yesterday and we also get to see some design changes. If you look closely, the display is kinda larger, taller and the bezels are getting thinner, which makes it seem like the notch is smaller but, it really isn’t. Prosser also mentioned other changes, including that the camera array is now 10% larger, the glass is flat but it’ll have a slight curve and that Face ID will now work from more angles like the iPad Pro can, even if the phone is laying on a flat surface. So yeah, there is a working prototype of the 120Hz iPhone 12 Pro, let’s just hope it makes it to the final unit.

Samsung Galaxy S10 series, Apple’s iPad mini and more devices on sale today

Deals. Let’s start today off with the Galaxy S10+ which is currently $150 off on Amazon, leaving the Unlocked, 128GB of storage variant for $700 shipped. If you want more storage, the 512GB variant is also $150 off, leaving that at $950 and, the regular S10 is also getting these same discounts on more variants. The Razer Blade Stealth 13 is also $300 off, leaving it at $1500 shipped for the Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage variant. Finally, the latest iPad Mini is $50 off, leaving the entry level Gold variant for $350. We also have more deals on TCL phones, Samsung tablets and more in the links in the description.

The TSMC could soon start working on a new 2nm chipset factory

And I think we now know why Apple decided to switch from Intel to their own Apple Silicone.. I mean, if you look at Intel’s roadmap its full of a lot of the same, TSMC is currently hosting their annual conference and they just shared their roadmap for the next two years. The company will employ 8,000 new people to manufacture 3nm chips which should hit the market by the end of 2022. They will also be working on a 2nm process which will be built around “Gate-All-Around” technology rather than the FinFET solution on the 3nm. We’re not exactly sure when these 2nm chips will hit the market but they can’t be to far off if we’re relatively close to the 3nm chips in 2022

Apple says Fortnite can return to App Store if Epic takes a step back

We know that Apple gave Epic 14 days to remove the direct payment option from Fortnite and, those 14 days end in 3 days. Well, Epic filed a restraining order to prevent Apple from blocking Fortnite updates but, the judge ruled in favor of Apple in this instance. However, Mark Gurman reports that the judge is “inclined” to unblock the Unreal Engine off the store but not Fortnite. And, of course inclined doesn’t mean that a decision has been made, it just means they are leaning more towards that option at the moment. In the mean time, Apple is ready to welcome Fortnite back to the App Store, so long as they remove this direct payment option. Apple knows that Epic wants to get this done as soon as possible because there’s a new Fortnite season coming out on the 27th, which is one day before the 14 day deadline and iOS users won’t be able to enjoy it. Since the restraining order wasn’t granted, Epic’s only choice might be to obey Apple’s rules.

iPhone 12 Pro Max leaks hint at 120Hz display, support for 4K video capture at up to 240fps

Here’s your first hands-on video of the iPhone 12 Pro Max

Yesterday we talked about how the possibilities of a 120Hz display on the iPhone 12 Pro were slim. Now, we have some new screen shots from Jon Prosser that give us some hope. The screen shots show the toggles in the settings screen to “enable high refresh rate” and enable “adaptive refresh rate” and they clearly show that this is 120Hz. He also posted another screen shot of the camera settings showing off some new features. There’s different toggles, including “enable the LiDAR camera”, and enable “video modes” which include 4K at 120FPS and 4K at 240FPS for Slow Mo. There’s another toggle for an “Enhanced Night Mode”, “Advanced Noise Reduction”, “Bit Depth Video” and “Zoom Capabilities”. He also mentioned that the 120Hz is for the 6.7in iPhone 12 Pro. Again, we’re not sure if this is going to make it to the final production, but we hope that the camera features will.

Here’s a Galaxy Z Fold 2 review video before Samsung could reveal more on September 1

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 2 earlier this month but, we didn’t get much details from the company. Well, a Chinese channel just posted a full 4 minute review of the phone. And, we can’t really understand what they’re saying but, this review gives us pictures and video shots of this phone from every possible angle. We get to see the device fully working, the 120Hz display, the outer display and more. They provided some audio tests, gaming tests and they also compared it to the original Fold, at least from the design stand point. The only thing we’re missing is some camera samples even if they showed us the camera working but, we do expect it to perform like the Galaxy Note 20 in this department. We should know the official specs, price and more in a few days.

Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21 might feature S-Pen support

It looks like it’s going to happen. For years we’ve been hearing rumors that Samsung might get rid of the Note Series and will move everything into one phone but, that has obviously never happened just yet. Well, according to a new report from The Elec, we will be getting three Galaxy S21 models next year, and the top-end variant will bring an S Pen. According to this report, the S21 is codenamed “Unbound” and it has three different project names, M1, N2 and O3, with O3 being the “Ultra” variant that will allegedly bring the S Pen. Now, where things get a little more interesting is when the report adds that Samsung is looking forward to introduce a Galaxy Z Fold 3 with S-Pen support. This most likely means that the Z Fold 3 will serve as Samsung’s Fall flagship which will replace the Note line-up since, the S21 will already bring the S-Pen features. It still isn’t explicitly clear if Samsung is getting rid of the “Note” moniker but, the future for it looks uncertain.

Here’s your first clear glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, and it looks pretty darn cool

Speaking of Samsung, There’s been a bunch of rumors on the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. So far, we’ve gotten some leaks on both Exynos and Snapdragon variants, as well as some leaked specs like the 6.4in display running at 120Hz, the 8GBs of RAM and the 4500 mAh battery. We also got a render of the front from Evan Blass but, now we get some full blown CAD renders of the whole device from OnLeaks. It brings bigger bezels than the S20 but, they’re still pretty slim. The camera array also looks pretty similar to the S20+ but, the sensors seem smaller inside the stove. We’re expecting this phone to come out some time in October so, we’ll keep you posted if we get some more leaks.

New executive order gives ByteDance 90 days to sell TikTok

Let’s talk about the whole Tik Tok ban situation. Last week we covered how the President signed an executive order, giving Tik Tok 45 days to sell their US operations to a company like Microsoft or they would be banned, possibly being forced out of the App Store and Play Store globally. This morning, the President signed a new executive order, giving them 90 days to sell their operations. According to him, there is credible evidence that ByteDance might take actions that threaten to impar the United States security. This new order gives Tik Tok to iron out whatever their plan is, whether that is selling to Microsoft or taking legal action. Apple also presented their concerns about the WeChat ban but, they just dismissed them and the 45 day order seems to still be on for Tencent.

New iPhone 12 lineup could look just like the iPhone 4

And, let’s start talking about Apple as, there’s a lot to cover today. We have a new gallery of pictures of iPhone 12 dummies from a tipster on Facebook. We’ve gotten dummies on two occasions prior to this but, these are probably the realest-looking ones. On these new images we can see the 4 different models, two with dual camera and two with the triple camera array. As expected, they all look pretty boxy, reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and the newer iPad Pros. All of these dummies are for case makers so we only get to see the back of them. Some of the things we’re also expecting that aren’t included here are the LiDAR sensor and some smaller notches for the Pro models. We’re expecting these phones to come out some time in October and November so, we’ll keep you posted.

Epic Games CEO calls Apple a middleman that separates gamers from game creators

On Friday we covered how Epic Games is taking on both Apple and Google and suing them for anti-competitive practices due to the high fees they put on developers. Well, you won’t believe who’s the next company denouncing Apple, it’s Facebook. On Saturday, Facebook announced that businesses and creators can host paid online events to help them make money and survive during the pandemic. What’s really good about this is that Facebook is letting these people keep 100% of the money they make from this events, saying that they won’t be charging any fees for at least a year. However, this is apparently only happening on Android phones as Apple won’t let them achieve this goal. According to them, they asked Apple to waive their infamous 30% tax or allow them to use Facebook Pay so that they could absorb the costs and let creators keep the revenue but Apple dismissed both of these requests, meaning people who do this on Apple devices will only keep 70% of the money. Facebook will now disclose this issue with users, if you make a payment on an Android device it will say “Facebook doesn’t take a fee from this purchase” but if you do it from an iPhone, it’ll say “Apple takes 30% of this purchase”. We’ll see how Apple moves as, this means there’s three people on their back, Spotify, Epic and Facebook.

Story of the day:

Epic could lose all access to Apple’s App Store and app development tools

Speaking of Epic being on Apple’s back, it looks like Apple has decided to strike back. According to a new PDF from Epic’s Court Filing, Apple told Epic that by August 28th, they will be cutting off Epic’s access to “all development tools necessary to create software for Apple’s platforms” and, this even includes the Unreal Engine which Epic offers to third party developers. Apple sent out a letter to Epic where they said they reviewed the situation and have found several violations to the Apple Developer Program License Agreement, therefore their account will be terminated if these violations aren’t cured in 14 days. Epic is currently asking the court to prevent Apple from taking “any adverse action” which includes terminating Apple’s License to the Apple Developer Program as well as modifying the Fortnite code. They’re also working on a solution as, Unreal Engine doesn’t really violate any of the terms like they did with the Fortnite app, and it shouldn’t be removed as it will also affect third-party developers. As for right now, Fortnite remains banned, an Epic has to work something now during these 14 days unless the court rules something against Apple. Epic could lose all access to Apple’s App Store and app development tools

The recent battle between Apple and Epic Games has gotten more interesting. Cupertino removed Fortnite from its App Store after Epic Games included an option to make in-app purchases directly from their store, instead of paying Apple’s 30 percent fee. This also led to more legal problems for Apple, as Epic Games sued it for anti-competitive restrictions and a cool video mocking Apple’s 1984 Macintosh ad. However, things don’t end here, as Apple is taking further actions to block Epic from its platform completely.

Apple has notified Epic Games that it will lose all access to its development tools on August 28. This means that Epic won’t have the tools required to create software for the Unreal Engine that the company offers to third-party developers for their games. Epic Games has filed a court order in a Northern California court looking to stop Apple from removing Epic’s App Store access.

The filing explains that:
“Apple told Epic that by August 28, Apple will cut off Epic’s access to all development tools necessary to create software for Apple’s platforms–including for the Unreal Engine Epic offers to third-party developers, which Apple has never claimed violated any Apple policy.”

Apple’s letter to Epic explains how the company can avoid losing its access to its platform.

“Upon further review of the activity associated with your Apple Developer Program membership, we have identified several violations of the Apple Developer Program License Agreement. Therefore, your Apple Developer Program account will be terminated if the violations set forth below are not cured within 14 days. […]

“If your membership is terminated, you may no longer submit apps to the App Store, and your apps still available for distribution will be removed. You will also lose access to the following programs, technologies, and capabilities:

– All Apple software, SDKs, APIs, and developer tools
– Pre-release versions of iOS, iPad OS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS
– Pre-release versions of beta tools such as Reality Composer, Create ML, Apple Configurator, etc.
– Notarization service for macOS apps
– App Store Connect platform and support (for example, assistance with account transition, password reset, app name issues)
– TestFlight
– Access to provisioning portal for certificate generation, and provisioning profile generation
– Ability to enable Apple services in-app (i.e. Apple Pay, CloudKit, PassKit, Music Kit, HomeKit, Push Notifications, Siri Shortcuts, Sign in with Apple, kernel extensions, FairPlay Streaming)
– Access to Apple-issued keys for connecting to services such as MusicKit, DeviceCheck, APNs, CloudKit, Wallet
– Access to Developer ID signing certificates and Kernel Extension signing certificates
– Developer Technical Support
– Participation in Universal App Quick Start Program, including the right to use the Developer Transition Kit (which must be returned to Apple)
– Engineering efforts to improve hardware and software performance of Unreal Engine on Mac and iOS hardware; optimize Unreal Engine on the Mac for creative workflows, virtual sets and their CI/Build Systems; and adoption and support of ARKit features and future VR features into Unreal Engine by their XR team

We hope that you are able to cure your breaches of the Apple Program License Agreement and continue to participate in the program.”

Epic is also trying to prevent Apple’s restrictive actions, as losing access to Mac and iOS developer tools may have a considerable impact on the apps and games using Epic’s Unreal Engine. It is also trying to stop Apple from removing the Fortnite app or modifying the Fortnite code, but right now, it can only wait for the court to decide on the matter.
