Samsung inked a deal with AMD back in June 2019 to license its RDNA graphics technology for its Exynos mobile chips, and it appears that fruits of that partnership will finally arrive this year. We’ve lately heard rumors of an upcoming Samsung laptop employing an Exynos chip with AMD GPU onboard, and a leaked benchmark promising some major performance gains. Now, as per a fresh leak, Samsung is prepping three new Exynos processors across different line-ups that will debut this year.

Leakster @UniverseIce mentions that Samsung will launch Exynos 8xx, Exynos 12xx, and Exynos 22xx series SoCs in 2021. The Exynos 8xx and Exynos 12xx chips will likely find their way inside mid-range Galaxy-A and Galaxy-M smartphones, while the unnamed Exynos 22xx series silicon will be a flagship offering that will likely be the first one with an AMD GPU.

Another leakster (@TheGalox_) claims that the processor will debut carrying the name Exynos 2200. And interestingly, Samsung is touted to launch two versions of this chip – one destined for flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, and another variant that will be fitted inside laptops, likely the always-on breed with cellular connectivity and Windows on ARM running things on the software side.

The tipster adds that the laptop version of Exynos 2200 will reportedly be 20% faster than its mobile counterpart, even adding that the first Samsung laptop powered by this Exynos chip with an AMD GPU will be announced by the end of this year. It is further being speculated that the laptop will be a successor to the Galaxy Book S that came equipped with a Qualcomm SoC.
As per leaked benchmarks, a device powered by an upcoming Exynos SoC with AMD GPU left Apple’s beastly A14 Bionic chipset far behind in terms of graphics prowess. And if that turns out to be true on the mobile platform, we can expect similar results on laptops too. That’s because the M1 silicon inside the new Macs is based on the same architecture as the A14 Bionic, which means the Exynos-AMD superiority could very well carry over in the laptop segment as well.

Moving on to Huawei, the company has been doing some interesting moves in order for their US ban to continue affecting the successful mobile business they had. Recently the company sold their HONOR brand which, actually means that Honor can now launch phones with Google Mobile Services. Now, there’s a weird conflicting report from Reuters claiming that Huawei has been in talks to sell their P and Mate Series to a consortium of buyers. Apparently this is another government-backed consortium of investments firms from Shanghai and the talks have been going on for weeks, as Huawei is claimed to have started to internally explore the possibility of selling their brands as early as September. Now the conflicting twist is that Huawei themselves have refuted the report. They put out a statement saying that they have “learned of some rumors regarding the possible sale of their flagship brands, and they said that there is no merit to these rumors whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan”. The reason why we’re still covering this is because, something similar happened to Honor as it was tipped that the company was selling it, Huawei said it wasn’t, and we know how the story ended. So yeah, at the moment, the Mate and P Series are still huge in China but what the future holds is yet to be seen.
Let’s talk about Smart Watches for both Apple and Samsung as, it looks like both companies are looking to push new health-centric features in 2021. So far we’ve seen ECG, blood pressure measurements, blood oxygenation and more. Not all are entirely accurate, but they’re there. Now, it looks like the next big upgrade will be blood sugar or glucose measurement. According to an ETNews report, the Galaxy Watch Active 3 will employ a non-invasive technology to take your glucose level measurements, while using an optical sensor. When it comes to Cupertino, they will reportedly be using the same technology to offer this feature, and they have apparently filed the patents and they are doing testing for the accuracy and efficiency for the blood sugar monitor. This technology was showed off at CES by a Japanese company, and bringing it to the mainstream is good for everybody at the end of the day.
Now let’s talk compact smartphones. The iPhone 12 mini was an interesting experiment, but we’ve been hearing that they slowed down production to boost the Pros which have been doing far better. Now if you remember, Apple didn’t pioneer this market. It was Sony, and it seems the compact is making a comeback. We have some new renders from OnLeaks of an Xperia Compact. According to these renders, this phone brings a 5.5in display with a waterdrop notch and somewhat of a thick chin at the bottom. When it comes to the cameras, it’ll reportedly bring a dual module at the back with one of them being a 13MP sensor. Also, it’ll bring a dedicated camera shutter button, a headphone jack and the fingerprint sensor comes embedded in the power button. OnLeaks mentions that the phone will be a tad bigger than the iPhone 12 mini, even if the displays will be of almost the same size and it also looks like this is more of a mid-ranger when compared to the 12 mini. Imagine that, dedicated camera button and headphone jack on a mini phone.. Seriously how hard can that be?
Let’s keep talking about Apple and unreleased wearables, but this time with the ones we’re still waiting for, AirTags. We’ve been waiting for these Tile-like trackers for the longest time, with sources like Jon Prosser claiming that they are ready to go, but Apple has delayed them multiple times due to the pandemic. A couple of weeks ago, Evan Blass posted some pictures of the accessories that will be used to carry around the AirTags, like these Nomad leather keychains as well as a Glasses Holder, for you to be able to track your glasses. Now we have a new image from a tipster on Twitter, showing an AirTag holder allegedly made by Spigen which will be sold on Amazon. This is another keychain with a black design, and you can see the AirTag sticking out in the center. So again, AirTags are Apple’s upcoming trackers which will work like the Galaxy Smart Tags, and according to multiple sources like Ming Chi Kuo, they are set to launch but, we don’t really have a timeline as for when so we’ll just have to wait. It’s just interesting that what matters is not the bare airtag, but instead the accessories that would use them to become smarter.
And finally for the hottest news today let’s move on to Samsung and your favorite topic, their Exynos processors. I know, bad joke.. But bare with me, it seems this is about to change. A couple of weeks ago now we got the Galaxy S21 Series which comes with the Exynos 2100 in some regions. And in case you haven’t heard, Samsung abandoned their custom CPU cores to use ARM’s design, meaning that the Exynos 2100 can compete with the Snapdragon 888 when it comes to CPU prowess. Not necessarily the same story on graphics though, but that’s about to change. Samsung is partnering with AMD to power the next generation of Exynos chips and these may come sooner than expected to the market. A Korean publication allegedly has some benchmarks of Samsung’s unnamed new chips which should debut in 2022. Now, we should take these with a big grain of salt as, they didn’t provide any screenshots but, according to these numbers, the A14 Bionic should be scared. In the Manhattan benchmark it beat it by 60 frames at 181.8 fps, in the normal Aztec ruins it beat it by almost 60 frames again, and in high Aztec Ruins it still beat it by 28 fps. And we know, this is Apple’s processor for last year and we should expect some upgrades from the A15 but guys, this is Exynos we’re talking here. This could solve everyone’s problems with Exynos if AMD and Samsung execute it correctly.

Samsung joined hands with AMD back in June last year to license the latter’s RDNA graphics architecture. The multi-year deal would allow Samsung to arm its Exynos processors with AMD GPUs, ditching the Mali graphics engines that have so far been a mainstay on Samsung’s in-house chips. While an AMD-powered Exynos chipset is still far away – especially since Samsung unveiled a new flagship SoC called Exynos 2100 earlier this month – some details have already started to surface online regarding the upcoming Samsung silicon. And from what we’re hearing, it will crush Apple’s A14 Bionic when it comes to raw graphics prowess.
Will AMD-driven Exynos accopmplish what Qualcomm Snapdragon couldn't?
As per an ITHome report that claims to sourced benchmark scores from a Korean community website, the upcoming Exynos SoC with an AMD GPU leaves the A14 Bionic inside the iPhone 12 far behind. The performance comparison was reportedly done via a trio of synthetic benchmark tests – GFXBench to be precise – and the alleged results are as follows:

As you can see in the table above, graphics performance of the AMD-driven Exynos chip in question is far ahead of what Apple’s A14 Bionic can reach. Now, A14 Bionic is one of the most powerful SoCs out there, and Apple’s in-house chip has outperformed the best that Qualcomm has to offer for the past few years. So, it is quite surprising to see an Exynos SoC armed with an AMD GPU surpassing Apple’s latest-and-greatest by such a huge margin. And IF true, it is also a testament to how big a performance gain the RDNA architecture-based AMD GPUs will bring for upcoming Exynos SoCs.
Exynos chips with an AMD GPU might arrive sooner than expected
Now, previous reports have claimed that the first wave of Exynos chips rocking an AMD GPU will arrive in 2022. But as per tipster @IceUniverse, the first Exynos 2xxx and Exynos 1xxx series processors with AMD GPU might be launched in the second or third quarter of 2021. And if that turns out to be true, the next Galaxy Note or Galaxy Z Fold series phone might feature an Exynos SoC packing an AMD GPU to handle the graphics department.
We will see Samsung release Samsung × AMD GPUs in the second or third quarter of 2021, which will be used in the next Exynos 2xxx and next Exynos 1xxx processors, Samsung may change the release time of the new processors.

Samsung has officially confirmed its new Exynos processor’s launch date, and it seems that it will take place just before the possible launch of the new Galaxy S21 series. A new post on Twitter reveals that “A whole new Exynos is coming.” We are expecting this to be the new Exynos 2100, which according to rumors, may be just as powerful, if not more, than its Snapdragon counterpart.
After a massive amount of Samsung leaks and rumors, we finally get official news, and these come directly from the Korean tech giant. The company has posted that it will be holding an event on January 12 to launch its new Exynos processor. Now, we believe that Samsung will launch its flagship Exynos 2100 chipset, which is expected to power the international version of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It also makes it easier to believe that Samsung may indeed launch its new flagship on January 14, but wait, there’s more.

We have also received details about the upcoming Exynos 2100 SoC, which comes from Roland Quandt. He claims that the new processor will feature a 64-bit octa-core CPU, which consists of one ultra-high-performance core clocked at 2.9GHz, a Mali-G78 GPU, and an integrated 5G modem. He also mentions that there’s a possibility of the Exynos 2100 being created with a 7nm process. Still, he also says that his info could be incorrect in terms of the fabrication process.

Whatever the case, we will have to wait less than a month to see if we will get the new Exynos 2100 processor and the official specs from Samsung, if the company doesn’t leak the information before. Let’s start today off with deals, cause by this time I should find another way to introduce this segment. Anyways, let’s end the week with some Galaxy Note 20 deals because, why not? The Note 20 Ultra is currently $200 off on Amazon, leaving the 128GB model for $1100, and yes this is the US variant. The Galaxy S20 is also getting $200 deals, that leaves the regular S20 for $800 but, you’ll have to go for the Cloud Pink colorway. Moving on to B&H, the Galaxy Note 10 which is still a pretty good buy is down $250 from its original price tag, leaving it at $700 shipped. Finally, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is $150 off, leaving that at $759 for the entry level model. I want to continue the official news on a positive note today so, let’s talk about YouTube and your favorite video every year. The company took to Twitter yesterday to announce that we won’t be getting a rewind next year. They posted a picture explaining how 2020 has been a different year, and they don’t feel like they should treat it like it wasn’t so, they’re taking a break this year. They also said that a lot of good was made this year as creators found ways to switch things up and cheer people so they thank them for making a difference. Now, we know that the Rewind isn’t necessarily people’s favorite video but, I kind of agree with YouTube for taking this position. But like seriously, can you name any particular YouTube rewind that you liked, cause I can’t remember any.
Now how about if we talk about Samsung as the company is sadly not abandoning their Exynos platform, and I doubt that will ever happen now that we got to see what Apple Silicon can do, that said, the company I smaking an interesting move. Samsung has just announced their new Exynos 1080 processor, but before you roll your eyes at me, hold it. This actually seems to be the first Exynos worth talking about, even if it’s designed for mid-rangers, but it actually follows on the 5nm process that’s making Apple Silicon look so good right now.. Exynos 1080-powered smartphones can have support for WQHD+ resolution display with up to 90Hz refresh rate or Full HD+ resolution screen with up to 144Hz refresh rate. As for the cameras, it supports up to 200MP single camera or 32MP + 32MP dual-camera setup or a maximum of six cameras. It also supports HDR10+ and 4K 60ffps encoding and decoding with HEVC. So yeah, technically this chip is to a certain degree more powerful and efficient than even the best Galaxy flagship, but we’ll see how soon we see that extend.
Now let’s move the spotlight over to what used to be my favorite social network, at least up until Facebook bought it. For those of you, like me, who love Instagram it looks like things are changing.. Again. Can Facebook just leave it alone? The company just announced a new update yesterday which is currently rolling out to users. Basically they are now prioritizing Reels and the Shop, by moving the Likes and Post sections to the top right, next to the DMS and now you get Reels at the center and the Shop where the likes used to be. Both of these features have been a part of Instagram for quite some time but, it looks like they’re really trying to push it now. Instagram has released other major updates this year, like switching to Facebook Messenger for DMs, or adding “Suggested Posts” to the feed. So far, reception hasn’t been so great and I doubt many people are interested in the Instagram Shop for it to switch places with the notification hub. We’ll see how it works out for them, cause yeah, the social network I once used for photos wants to be a mall now?
Now let’s talk Apple as yes, happy iPhone day part 2. All of the iPhones are here now, as a matter of fact, we have content coming very soon on the 12 Pro Max and the Mini but, one of the topics people are interested in this year is battery life. The 11 had great battery life because they finally caved and gave us bigger batteries. Thing is that plan shrunk with the iPhone 12 and it sort of makes sense with the 5nm architecture in the new chips. Well, according to a new Ming Chi Kuo report, they’ll be shrinking them again next year. He claims that Cupertino will be using a new battery “soft board” technology for the iPhone 13 and the 13 Mini. This technology helps them save internal space and reduce costs because they have fewer layers than what we currently get, maybe to make the iPhones slimmer or in case they want to bring the headphone jack back. Sadly, this means that Apple is going back to the days were they prioritized slimmer phones over good battery life. Another factor could be that LTPO display we’ll reportedly be getting as it draws less power than current displays. So far, my experience with the 12’s battery has been okay, but it’s definitely not better than the 11 so, let’s hope the 13 isn’t worse than the 12.
Finally, for the hottest news today, let’s keep talking about Apple and Ming Chi Kuo, mainly because you know that not all the rumors we’ve discussed were launched and we wonder where are those products. Well, let’s begin with the latest developer beta for iOS 14.3 which reveals some interesting things. A developer shared on twitter a “New Pairing” screen video from the Find My App in this beta where there’s a magnifying glass that swivels across some over the ear headphones. Now, there’s no secret that before Apple launches a product, an icon of it pops around somewhere so, it looks like we could finally be getting those AirPods Studios but, according to Prosser those are significantly delayed. But now, moving back to Ming Chi Kuo, his latest research note gives us more information on what Apple plans to do in the first half of 2021. The note mentions that the components destined for a miniLED iPad will be mass produced in the first half of 2021. Now, we’re expecting three different iPads with miniLED displays but, this one should be an iPad Mini or the regular 10.2in iPad, as the 12.9in iPad Pro is slated for Q4 of next year. Moving back to AirPods, he also claims that Cupertino is working on the third generation AirPods which will also go into mass production in the first half of 2021. These will reportedly get a new design to look more like the Pros but, they will still lack Pro features like ANC. If Apple is planning to launch these in the first half of next year, it kinda makes sense for them to launch with the AirPods Studios.
