No CeeLo we didn’t know, ya know?

When a video starts circulating, showing a pop star supposedly maimed in his studio while talking on the phone, what might the knee jerk reaction be in the current world of tech? Has there been a certain phone causing problems for people? You know, like exploding problems?

The media market faces some high hurdles in how to get an audience motivated to check out new material. Showing something salacious, like a well known pop star getting hurt on a security camera, is sure to catch a viral thread. You have to get folks reacting and sharing right? What about a whole bunch of free press as people speculate about the nature of the incident? We’re all suddenly forensics experts once we capture something like this on camera.

Free of any context, though this didn’t look like any security video I’d ever seen before (down to the artfully edited static), it’s not surprising so many people jumped to conclusions. Something apparently had happened to CeeLo, but no one could be sure what exactly. There appeared to be some kind of a jolt, shock, small explosion, and then the artist slumped to the floor.

It would take almost nine hours before CeeLo addressed the situation in this reply via Facebook video (linked below).

And there we have it. A “leaked” piece of media designed to gin up some controversy. Twas merely a ruse! CeeLo is so sorry that anyone might have been upset by the video they released to kick off some new media venture which was designed to get people upset. The bandwagon effect of jumping on Samsung was just collateral damage. The main victim here was good taste.

This was tacky Mr. Green, and maybe in the future do us a little better when you shoot some selfie video.
