iPhone 13 Pro Max will stand out with its upgraded wide angle camera: Kuo

We’ve lately been hearing a lot of rumors regarding the camera upgrades that the iPhone 13 family will allegedly bring to the table. As per a new research note by TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via AppleInsider), Apple is going to equip the iPhone 13 Pro Max with an F/1.5 wide-angle camera. For comparison, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have a wide-angle camera with an F/1.6 aperture. So, what’s the benefit of an F/1.5 aperture for the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s wide-angle camera?

A larger aperture will likely yield better low-light performance

Well, to put it briefly, a larger aperture will allow more light in, which directly means improved results in low-light scenarios. A larger aperture also helps with clicking better portrait shots as it allows one to achieve a better bokeh effect in photos. However, it remains to be seen how much of a difference an F/1.5 wide-angle camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max creates when compared against the F/1.6 snapper on its predecessor.

As for the rest of the iPhone 13 family, it will reportedly come equipped with an F/1.6 wide-angle camera. It appears that Apple again wants to give the pricier ‘Max’ model an edge over its sibling to justify the price premium. Last year, Apple armed the iPhone 12 Pro Max with the more efficient Sensor-Shift image stabilization technology, while the rest of the iPhone 12 series phones went with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). As per a DigiTimes report, Apple is going to bring the new stabilization tech to the entire iPhone 13 series this year.

iPhone 13 Pro Max will have an edge in camera department to justify the price premium

Kuo also adds the entire iPhone 13 series will rely on a 7P lens assembly for the wide-angle camera. Previous leaks suggest that the iPhone 13 Pro and its Max version will come equipped with a 120Hz LTPO OLED panel supplied by Samsung, and the notch is getting smaller as well. Additionally, we might get a matte black finish on the iPhone 13 Pro pair this year, and a 1TB storage option to hurt your wallet might also be on the table.

Samsung’s app confirms a new pair of wireless earbuds are coming soon

Samsung launched a new pair of true wireless earbuds – dubbed the Galaxy Buds Pro – not too long ago in January. They brought features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a Voice Detect feature for intelligently switching from ANC to Ambient Mode, automatic switching between two connected devices, and more. Now, it appears that a new pair of wireless earbuds are in the pipeline, and the confirmation for it comes from Samsung’s own companion app.

Codenamed 'Berry', the Galaxy Buds2 will support multi-device pairing

First spotted by the folks over at Android Police, the latest build of Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app more or less confirms the arrival of new wireless earbuds. The code of the app clearly mentions the name ‘Galaxy Buds2’ alongside the codename ‘berry’ for Samsung’s upcoming audio wearable. The report adds that the name ‘Galaxy Buds2’ spotted in the code is not just a generic placeholder, and that an actual product with that name will be launched soon and will connect via the Galaxy Wearable app.

The code also mentions that the Galaxy Buds2 will support multi-device pairing, just like the Galaxy Buds Pro. And most likely, they will also offer support for seamless device switching. So, if the upcoming earbuds are paired to a tablet while watching a movie and a call comes on your connected phone, the audio output will instantly switch to the phone to let users attend the call.

Unfortunately, that’s everything we know about the Galaxy Buds2 at this point. There is no word when they will be launched, but the next Unpacked event seems to be the most likely platform. And if rumors are anything to go by, Samsung is also readying a new batch of foldable for its next major launch event, now that a new Galaxy Note series phone for 2021 has been nixed. Samsung is also rumored to launch an ‘affordable’ foldable phone tentatively called Galaxy Fold Lite, and of course, the Galaxy Z Fold3 as well with stylus support in tow is also in the pipeline.

The latest OnePlus 9 series and Samsung devices are on sale today

We start today’s deals with a selection of some of the best Android smartphones available. First, we head over to OnePlus.com, where we find that pre-orders for the OnePlus 9 series are live. You can get a new OnePlus 9 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB RAM, and 128GB of storage space for $729. Now, savings are not being reflected directly on this device’s price tag, but you will get a pair of new OnePlus Buds Z in White, a $50 value, for free upon purchase.

If you want to go pro, the OnePlus 9 Pro can be yours for $1,069, and you will get 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor under the hood. You will get a 120Hz Fluid Display on both models, as well as 65W Ultra Fast Charging, but only the 9 Pro comes with 50W Wireless Charging, and you get a pair of OnePlus Buds Z Steven Harrington Edition, a $60 value for free.

Now, those aren’t the only OnePlus products on sale, as you can find the OnePlus 8 Pro selling for $699 after a $300 discount when getting the 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage variant. And you can also get up to 40 percent off OnePlus accessories to go with it. The OnePlus 8T and the 8 are getting a $200 discount, meaning you can grab one for $599 and $499, respectively. However, I’d personally go for the 8T since it comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage space, while the OnePlus 8 comes with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM.

Finally, we head over to Samsung.com, where we find the latest Galaxy S21 series starting at just $100 if you go for the vanilla or the Plus variants. Yes, both are available for just $100 after an eligible trade-in, but the best deal comes with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra that’s currently selling for $300.

You can also get a new Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra locked to Verizon or AT&T for as low as $325, which is even less than what you would have to pay for the regular Galaxy Note 20 unlocked that’s now selling for $350 with an eligible trade-in. And if you’re looking for a foldable that won’t break the bank; you can get the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip for $650 with 5G support, or go for the LTE-only variant for $100 more.

Apple might finally attain matte black design nirvana with iPhone 13 Pro

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Samsung earned some new fans with its eye-catching matte black finish on the Galaxy S21 Ultra this year. Or in simple words, it made the ‘matte black everything’ club very happy, assuming they spent over a thousand dollars on the Samsung flagship. Now, over to the iPhone side of the ecosystem, the closest Apple has gone to the matte black nirvana is with the graphite finish on the iPhone 12 Pro duo that rocks a textured matte glass black. However, it appears that the iPhone 13 Pro might arrive in a matte black trim as well.

A orange / bronze trim is reportedly on the consideration table as well

As per a video on YouTube channel EveryThingApplePro that cites leakster Max Weinbach, Apple might dress the iPhone 13 Pro and its Max version in a matte black finish. Additionally, the metallic sides will do a better job at keeping away fingerprints and smudges. To recall, the glossy stainless steel sides of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have received some flak for being fingerprint magnets. There is also some sort of bronze color option in the early PVT (Product Validation Test) stages, however, chances of it making it to the final list are slim.

The video also mentions that the mechanism behind portrait mode is getting some rework on the iPhone 13 Pro pair. The leakster claims that portrait mode will now do its magic by combining data collected by the camera sensor as well as the LiDAR sensor. The latter is also touted to help with improving edge detection. The wave of upgrades will also carry over to the portrait video department.

Portrait mode is receiving some major upgrade on the iPhone 13 Pro duo

Another key aesthetic upgrade will be a smaller notch. Earlier this week, alleged images of iPhone 13 series front glass revealed a smaller notch design that sees the front camera lens switch sides, while the earpiece has moved to the top. As per previous leaks, a major upgrade that the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will bring to the table is a 120Hz display. Archrival Samsung will reportedly supply the LTPO panels for the upcoming Apple flagships.

The ultra-wide camera on the upcoming phones will also be a step up vis-a-vis the iPhone 12 line-up, and the new sensor-shift image stabilization technology will likely be extended to the entire iPhone 13 family after being an iPhone 12 Pro Max exclusive.

OnePlus Watch not running WearOS gives me hope but…

Yesterday, major specifications of the OnePlus Watch were leaked. The leak claimed that the upcoming product would offer a week’s battery life with just 20 minutes of charge. This translates to the device not running WearOS – I was making an educated guess here since WearOS devices don’t even last as long as two days. However, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the company’s first smartwatch will not run Google’s WearOS.

On a forum post, he wrote, “When developing the OnePlus Watch, we tried to understand the pain points for a smart watch wearer. We chose to go with a smart wear operating system developed based on RTOS because we believe it provides you a smooth and reliable experience while offering a great battery life, covering some of the biggest concerns we’ve been hearing from people looking to buy a smartwatch.

RTOS is a perfectly capable smartwatch OS

Now, RTOS is a perfectly capable operating system for a wearable. Thanks to its less power-consumption nature, it gives manufacturers the flexibility to go with low-end processors and keep the costs down. This also allows the wearable to last longer than the usual WearOS-running devices. Generally, a WearOS-running smartwatch gives you a maximum of two days battery life, while a RTOS-running watch can last up to 14 days! I’m really happy (like my colleague Nadeem) that an upcoming product from OnePlus will last me a week with 20 minutes of charge but my major pain point with RTOS remains.

    RTOS and notifications

    OnePlus Watch

On one hand, OnePlus Watch not running WearOS gives me hope, on the other, I’m a little skeptical. My issue with RTOS is lack of support for actionable notifications. I’ve tested at least half a dozen smartwatches running RTOS in the last six months, and one major gripe that I’ve had with them was that they weren’t “smart” enough.

You get informed but you can't do anything with that information

RTOS doesn’t allow you to take action on the notifications. For instance, you’ll know what your friend messaged on WhatsApp but you’ll not be able to reply to the message. Heck, you can’t even swipe to remove the notification from your smartwatch – at least that’s how it is on the watches I’ve used from Amazfit, Huawei and Honor.

It informs you but you cannot do anything with that information. You’ll need your smartphone for taking any kind of action. On the other hand, WearOS is smart enough to enable actionable notifications.

I wish OnePlus had found a way to offer a good battery life with WearOS. That way, we’d have the best of both worlds! Call it wishful thinking but I hope it happens someday. (I’ll not go into third-party app support here. Personally, RTOS does the work for me with the inbuilt apps).

I was really hoping to see a brand giving tough fight to Apple alongside Samsung in the Android world. But hey, the watch is yet to launch!

OnePlus Watch will face some serious competition

You’ll get long battery life on a single charge! That being said, it would be interesting to see how OnePlus differentiates its offering from that of Huawei and Amazfit. The latter offers a slew of features at a price point that’s hard to beat. Lately, Amazfit has been doing a good job with its GTR 2 and GTS 2 series of smartwatches, and it is also rumored to bring ECG support in the future.

As for the leaked specifications, the OnePlus Watch looks like any other smart wearable available in the market. It is tipped to offer automatic workout detection, a swimming mode, sleep tracking, heart rate monitoring, stress tracking and more. The usual stuff like SpO2 sensor and notifications. It is rumored to also allow you to make or answer phone calls, and control music on your smartphone.

While there is no word on pricing, we expect it to be a budget offering, and around the price range of Amazfit GTR 2. It is said to be made available in both standard and LTE variants.

OnePlus is yet to showcase its product. We might see some surprises at the launch. I’m hoping to see at least one.

What do you think of OnePlus Watch not running WearOS? Let us know in the comments below.
