Talks about a foldable iPhone have heated up lately. TF International Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a fairly solid track with predictions related to Apple products, now claims that a foldable iPhone might make its debut in 2023. Additionally, Kuo mentions (via Macrumors) that the device could feature a foldable panel measuring between 7.5-inch and 8-inch, which puts it in the same class as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 and the HUAWEI Mate X2.
However, the plans might change down the road and depend on whether Apple manages to overcome some hardware-related supply and production issues by that time. Kuo specifically mentions “key technology and mass production issues” and adds that the idea of a foldable iPhone has “not yet officially kicked off.” What this means is things are pretty much on the drawing board at the moment, and Apple may decide to either delay it, or scrap the project entirely depending on the challenges ahead.
Over the past few months, we’ve come across multiple rumors surrounding Apple’s foldable iPhone project. Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple has roped in LG Display for the development of foldable OLED panels. Leakster Jon Prosser, on the other hand, claims that Apple’s foldable iPhone might go for a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and that it might come in multiple color options.
Research firm Equal Ocean recently chimed in on the foldable iPhone saga and mentioned that the device might arrive with Apple Pencil support, which actually sounds like a sane idea from a productivity perspective. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is one of the most reliable sources when it comes to upcoming Apple launches, recently shared that Apple has developed prototype foldable screens for testing them internally. However, he added that things are still limited to the screen stage, and a functional foldable iPhone is still not on the lab table.
Interestingly, Apple patents even hint at the possibility of a self-healing foldable display, which is pretty wild. At this point in time, nothing concrete has surfaced so far. And Apple being its secretive self, it is advised to process all these rumors with the proverbial pinch of salt until an official announcement.

The latest Apple rumors are usually talking about the new iPhone 13, a future iPhone with a foldable display, a MacBook Pro refresh, and a new iPad Pro with a mini-LED display. However, the latest report suggests that the new foldable iPhones could affect the iPad mini.
According to the latest report from MyDrivers, Apple may be planning on getting rid of its iPad mini to favor the arrival of a new and larger iPhone with stylus support. This is not the first time we get rumors claiming that Cupertino is working on giving stylus support to its smartphones since we have already heard that the foldable iPhone is expected to arrive with this feature. This foldable iPhone is expected to arrive with a 7.3 to 7.6-inch display diagonally, and rumors suggest that it may arrive until 2023, even though MyDriver is brave enough to claim that this foldable device would arrive in September 2022. Now, we can’t confirm or deny that a foldable device will replace the iPad mini, but it definitely seems that there’s a chance for both products to coexist.
Let’s remember that iPads keep evolving, and we may soon get to see more iPad models with smaller bezels, which means that we could soon get more display real state on a smaller canvas. Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone is said to come with a clamshell design, which wouldn’t make it an iPad mini alternative. However, if we saw a design like the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the recently launched Huawei Mate X2, it would be easier to believe. There is also information suggesting that Apple is getting help from LG to develop foldable displays for this new device, even though we can expect Samsung to be Apple’s primary supplier for OLED foldable displays. Previous rumors claim that Samsung has already provided Cupertino with several foldable panels to test on their foldable prototypes.

Apple is expected to launch its first foldable iPhone sometime in 2023, if not later, but that doesn’t stop us from getting tons of rumors about the upcoming device. The latest rumor comes from DigiTimes’s Chinese publication that claims Cupertino is getting some help from LG on foldable display development.
It seems that the Chinese publication of DigiTimes knows something we don’t about Apple’s foldable iPhone. They cite industry sources when claiming that LG Display is assisting Apple with the development of a foldable OLED display for the upcoming foldable iPhone. However, they don’t specify if LG will be in charge of supplying these foldable panels for the foldable phone.
We know that Apple usually relies on Samsung as their primary supplier for OLED displays for the higher-end iPhones, with LG helping with the more affordable variants. Previous rumors also suggest that Samsung will be Apple’s first choice to get the foldable displays for its foldable device since the company has also allegedly provided Apple with a large number of foldable display samples for testing in their two possible design options. Rumors also claim that Apple has allegedly decided to use a clamshell design that will look like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the Moto RAZR.
Jon Prosser has also revealed some interesting information about this foldable iPhone in the last few days, as his sources claim that the foldable iPhone will arrive with several color options to choose from, meaning that this device will target a wider audience. And yesterday, we also received information suggesting that this device will arrive with a 7-inch OLED display and Apple Pencil support. However, we can’t tell if Apple will also develop a new and smaller Pencil for this device or if it’s going compatible with the current models in the market.

Apple is well known for taking its time before adopting new technologies. But being late to the party doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t arrive, making a huge impact. While other companies strive to give their users innovation, Cupertino decides to take its time, refine what’s available and deliver the same features with better results and great marketing. And it seems that we may see Apple pull it off once again, with its foldable iPhone, which may launch with stylus support.
According to research firm Equal Ocean, the upcoming foldable iPhone will arrive with Apple Pencil support. It also predicts that the device will arrive with a clamshell design that will feature a foldable OLED display that would be between 7.3 and 7.6-inches in size. However, it’s not clear whether we will get a new Pencil design for the clamshell foldable device or if the device will feature support for the current models.
Jon Prosser has also been giving out tons of information about Apple’s possible foldable device. His sources claim that Cupertino has already decided to favor the clamshell design over a second option that would give us a foldable device that would look more like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the upcoming Huawei Mate X2. He also said that the new phone would feature several color variants, meaning that this device would be aimed at a larger crowd.
Whatever the case, we will have to wait for quite a while before getting official confirmation of this new device, as all we have are rumors. Prosser suggests that we will have to wait sometime before we receive Apple’s foldable device, and it seems that we may even have to wait until 2023. But suppose you’re really interested in getting a foldable device with stylus support this year. In that case, you should consider the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which’s also expected to give us this new feature.

The point of foldable smartphones (and soon, rollable ones) is, beyond the proof of concept and technological advancements, to modify the actual shape of the device. What does that mean? By folding (rolling, etc.) a smartphone, you’re actually changing the size of the canvas, which, in this case, is the display.
You can make said display larger – and we discussed last week about the two major concepts to achieve that – or you can choose to make said display smaller. If you continue the logic, the two approaches above result in either a. a larger, tablet-like phone or b. a smaller phone.
An example for the first category would be the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the Mate Xs (upcoming Mate X2). An example for the second category is the Galaxy Z Flip or the razr 5G.
While they both fold, they do so with a completely different outcome in mind. The ones in the first category unfold into a tablet-like large canvas and collapse to a regular size phone. The ones in the second category fold into a smaller-than-regular device, expanding into a regular size. In other words, we have regular-to-big and small-to-regular.
With all of that in mind, let’s look at the recent rumors of the foldable iPhone. According to chatter, Apple might have already decided to take the clamshell route for its first foldable smartphone, or at least so some claim.
“Sure, why not? It makes sense for Apple to launch a clamshell foldable iPhone. Samsung did it, successfully”, some might say. And to that, I say “you are right”. But what we are forgetting is that Samsung also has a classic, non-clamshell foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
So for those who don’t want to carry a smartphone and a tablet with them at all times, Samsung (and HUAWEI for that matter) came up with the concept of a phone exploding into a tablet.
This brings us to the idea of protecting the iPad, as a line-up. Having a phone transform into a tablet will surely cannibalize the tablet offering, right? Well, if you come to think of it, the iPad mini is the only relatively small iPad, at 7.9 inches. All the other ones are a 10-inch plus, which is a different category altogether.
Even if we force the argument that an inflating iPhone would somewhat affect the iPad, it would only affect the iPad mini, and even if so, it wouldn’t be a bad decision to discontinue it but still at the same time offering a foldable iPhone that’s close to that display size.
Going back to the Samsung analogy above, and the Z Fold 2, this actually was the first foldable Samsung product generation on the market. Only after they have managed to establish this offering did Samsung lean towards the clamshell approach. Why? Because these days we want our screens to be big. We are consuming so much media, and with 5G upon us, that’s not going away.
Apple tackling the foldable game with a clamshell will still offer future customers two screen sizes: a small one (compared to the outfolding/expanding foldables), and an even smaller one (hopefully, on the outside of the now folded clamshell).
This could, of course, solve a problem for those who want a phone to occupy the least amount of space, but only partially. A phone folded in two will be close to doubling its thickness, so whatever you gain from reducing height, you lose by increasing thickness, while width remains the same.
There’s also the inconvenience of flipping it open every time you want to talk on the phone or do anything significant. As powerful as iOS could become to support the outer display, you simply are not as productive on a 1, 2, or even 3-inch outer screen as you are on a 6-inch plus display. There’s no way around it.
…and then there are the bragging rights, but we should mention this as both in favor and against the clamshell foldable iPhone.
Whether Apple will go classic or clamshell foldable for its iPhone is at the moment unknown, and we’re only speculating here. At this point, it’s not even sure Apple knows the direction it wants to go in. Regardless of which one it will end up materializing, a foldable iPhone will definitely be a bragging right for those who find pride in showing off their latest iPhone.
Yes, there are plenty of those who specifically purchase the latest exclusive color option, in order to be spotted from afar that it’s the latest model, Heaven forbid should they rock last year’s offering. But, to each his own.
Another thing is clear, and history teaches us about Apple: they’re usually late to the game, but when they do adopt a technology or trend, they seem to do it arguably better.

The post Will Apple go big or small with its foldable iPhone? appeared first on Pocketnow.
We’ve been getting tons of rumors concerning Apple’s foldable iPhone project. The last rumor suggests that Apple may have already decided on the basic design for its new device. Jon Prosser has been posting several reports about this new foldable device on his YouTube channel Front Page Tech, where he now gives us a couple of new updates about the upcoming smartphone.
According to Jon Prosser and his sources, Apple may have already decided to follow the path of a future iPhone with a clamshell design. Earlier reports claimed that Apple was working on two foldable iPhones. The first device is believed to have a design that resembles the one we see on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, while the second one would look more like the Galaxy Z Flip or the Moto RAZR. Prosser’s sources aren’t sure why Apple has opted for a clamshell design or why it is now getting more attention over the other form factor. Maybe Apple’s durability tests have favored the hinge in this variant instead of the other model, or maybe Apple’s recent partnership with Samsung, who’ll be manufacturing the foldable display panels for these devices.
The second leak is even more interesting, as the new foldable iPhone is also expected to arrive with more color options. Why is this interesting, you ask? Well, you just have to take a look at Apple’s recent iPhone 12 and any other iPhone lineup. You will see that the base iPhone models are the ones to get several color options, while the higher-end variants usually arrive with fewer color options to choose from. In other words, this could mean that Apple may want to target a wider audience with these devices, well, if it finally manages to make it happen. Prosser also believes that the new foldable iPhone won’t arrive next year, as some have suggested.

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone, but so far, any concrete evidence or a reputable report regarding those plans has yet to surface online. That changes now. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has developed prototype foldable screens for testing them internally. However, progress on the ambitious project is still limited to the screen stage, and the company doesn’t have a working prototype of a foldable iPhone yet.
Citing sources familiar with the latest developments, Gurman notes that Apple is discussing the screen size for its folding iPhone project, and one of the options on the table is a 6.7-inch panel. Going by the trend of book-style foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 that have a display ranging between 7-inch to 8-inches in size, it appears that Apple is experimenting with a clamshell form factor. Samsung already has launched two foldable devices with a similar approach – the Galaxy Z Flip and its 5G variant. However, talks about the exact form factor of a folding iPhone is still purely speculative at this stage.
The report also sheds some light on Apple’s 2021 iPhone plans. It appears that Apple won’t make any major internal changes to its upcoming smartphones, save for one. The company is reportedly testing in-display fingerprint sensors for the 2021 iPhone line-up, a feature that has popped up in rumors on multiple occasions in the past. However, the company won’t kill the Face ID system in favor of an in-display fingerprint sensor for authentication, as the former is crucial for some camera tricks as Animoji and Memoji.
To recall, Apple received some criticism following the debut of the iPhone 12 line-up, as Face ID is not of much use in times when wearing masks is mandatory and a life-saving habit. Many demanded a return of the physical fingerprint sensor, and Apple partially obliged – but instead of making its way to an iPhone, the company added a side-mounted fingerprint sensor to the 2020 iPad Air.

Rumors of a new foldable iPhone are starting to gain more attention. On Monday, we saw Jon Prosser talk about the possibility of two foldable iPhone designs that were being tested to see which device will become Apple’s first foldable phone, and it seems that the test results are in.
According to the Taiwanese website Economic Daily News, Apple had been testing two foldable iPhone designs in a Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China, with positive results in both designs. The tests were conducted to see if the hinge system for the two devices would hold up against everyday use, and it seems that both have passed.
The first foldable iPhone to be tested was a dual-screen model, which has been appearing in rumors since June 2020, when Jon Prosser tweeted that this prototype has two separate display panels on a hinge, even though the two separate panels would seem fairly continuous and seamless when extended. We have seen Apple receiving patents for devices that fall under this description, even though they have been aimed more towards iPads, and a double folding device design, which was first seen back in May 2019.
Apple’s “foldable” iPhone isn’t really a foldable.
— Jon Prosser (@jon_prosser) June 15, 2020
The current prototype has two separate display panels on a hinge.
Round, stainless steel edges like current iPhone 11 design.
No notch — tiny forehead on outter display that houses Face ID.
The second foldable iPhone is said to have a clamshell design, which would make it look like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or the Moto RAZR. Now, this device is expected to come with a flexible OLED display provided by Samsung, which would’ve already sent several display samples to Apple for testing purposes earlier in 2020.
In a recent video, Jon Prosser said that Apple was going to have to pick one of these two foldable iPhone designs, as only one of them would make it to the market. However, we may have to wait until late 2022 or 2023 to see this new foldable iPhone hit the shelves.

The post Two foldable iPhone designs have allegedly passed internal durability tests appeared first on Pocketnow.
We have been receiving rumors about a new foldable iPhone for some time now, and it seems that we may be getting closer to get one. The latest rumors suggest that Apple is already testing some of its designs to see which device may end up hitting the market.
While looking for interesting information, Jon Prosser received some updates about Apple’s future foldable iPhone. A couple of his sources mentioned that Apple is working on two foldable devices. The first device would be a previously leaked phone with two display panels with a hinge between them, something like what we see in the Microsoft Surface Duo. However, the second device has a clamshell design, which means that we could get an iPhone in the same form factor as the Galaxy Z Flip and the latest Moto RAZR.
According to Prosser’s sources, shells of this device are being tested in a Shenzhen Foxconn factory. These shells are not the entire unit, as Apple may be trying to see just how durable is the hinge mechanism. Now, this device would indeed arrive with a foldable OLED display, which would be supplied by Samsung. They also suggest that Apple is still trying to decide which of the two designs hits the shelves, as only one would make it to the market. In other words, don’t expect Apple to do as Samsung with the Galaxy Z Fold and the Z Flip lineups, or at least for now.
Still, Prosser’s sources claim that Apple may finally join the foldable market until September 2022, and they give that timeframe as their best guess. The reason for this is that there’s nothing concrete on the production schedule of these devices, but a late 2022 or even a 2023 release would sound logical according to Apple’s product progress. In other words, Apple fans will have to wait a while to see these new foldable iPhones.

While Android phone manufacturers are working on foldable smartphones since 2018, and have launched devices like Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, Apple is still a couple of years away from announcing a foldable iPhone. According to a report, the Cupertino company is actively working on developing its first foldable iPhone. It goes on to say that Apple could launch its first foldable device in September 2022. Currently, the company is tipped to be in the process of testing the screen and bearings of the first foldable iPhone.
The latest development comes from Taiwanese media firm Money.udn.com, which cited supply chain sources to report that Apple is working on bringing its first foldable iPhone in 2022. It is said that Samsung will be the display supplier and the bearings will be manufactured by several suppliers. As per the report, New Nikko will be the main supplier and Hon Hai will assemble the foldable handset. For reference, Hon Hai is reported to be one of Apple’s largest foundry for iPhones. Furthermore, Nippon Nippon will also procure bearings for the upcoming product, and Apple is rumored to rely heavily on the research and development done by the Taiwanese company for its foldable hinge.
It is being said that the foldable phone requires rigorous folding tests, and past foldable phones have been tested for about 1,000,000 times for durability. Notably, this isn’t the first time that we are hearing about rumors for the foldable iPhone. In February 2020, Apple patented a new hinge design for a foldable. According to the patent, it could build a unique hinge design that enables sufficient space between the two displays for the flexible screen to retract into, when folded. This space between the hinge might allow the display to stay in a curved state to prevent any crease or tension. You can read more about it here.
