So despite the forthcoming reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S 5, Gear Fit, Gear 2, Oppo Find 7a, Nokia X, and the just-completed reviews of the ZENS Qi line, BlackBerry 10.2.1, and the Verizon HTC One M8, we’re banding together behind microphones in three separate cities on two continents to bring you the news and editorials of a very ...

Is fitness the future of wearables?

Although the “wearables” category is somewhat new to Pocketnow, devices that are meant to be worn, rather than carried, have been around for quite some time. In the very early days they were called pocket watches. Eventually they evolved into timekeepers that we wore around our wrists. Original versions just kept track of time, but other features were added in: day of the week, day of the month, and even moon phases eventually came to wrist watches. Some got barometers, stopwatches, countdown times, calculators, even simple calendars. When Microsoft released its SPOT ...

Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch announcement comes a day early

No, you didn’t accidentally sleep through the weekend and it’s Monday already, when Samsung will be throwing its Unpacked 5 event. While we’ve still got another day to go before we expect Samsung to take the lid off the Galaxy S 5, one of the other big announcements we were looking forward to from the company’s MWC showcase has gone official just a little prematurely, and overnight Samsung confirmed its latest smartwatches, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo That’s right: no more “Galaxy” this time around – ...

Galaxy Gear 2 might ditch Android for Tizen

Something needs to change with the Galaxy Gear. Samsung’s aware of this, and for a while now we’ve been expecting the company to prepare a second-gen Galaxy Gear for this spring, hoping to correct some of the missteps the first smartwatch made. But what, exactly, could Samsung be hoping to change? Would it finally open the watch up to operation with non-Samsung Androids? Could it significantly improve the watch’s battery life? What about doing ...

Pocketnow Weekly 083: Nexus 5 giveaway, Android apps on Windows Phone, & HTC M8 rumors

Snow storms have their ups and downs. On the one hand, they keep you from partaking in all the Nokia unboxing fun your comrades in more seasonable climes are enjoying – but on the other, they put you in mind of all the friends you have in the great Arctic North. One such person is friend of the show Nick Gray of HTCSource and Android and Me, who joins us today for a special extended episode taking a long look at all the HTC M8 rumors of the past few weeks. That’s followed by ...

Galaxy Gear 2 price still undecided, as Samsung is still vacillating according to rumors

If all those rumors (and executive hints) concerning the launch of the Galaxy Gear 2 together with the Galaxy S 5 are true, we’ll see a Samsung smartwatch release soon, at MWC (IF — note the all caps — that’s the S 5 event). However, according to recent reports, Samsung is vacillating over the price of the Gear follow-up, and “sources” blame Apple’s upcoming smartwatch, and its possible lower price tag. The key takeaway is this: Samsung is still thinking about the proper price tag for the Galaxy Gear 2, as the original version failed to gain ...

Pocketnow Weekly 082: HTC M8, LG G3 rumors, and early termination on principle

Sometimes it’s not the promise of saving money, nor the allure of a shiny device that drives you from the warm arms of your current wireless carrier – sometimes it’s just a matter of standing up for what you believe in. That’s the case with today’s podcast guest, friend of the show and longtime Verizon Wireless customer Chris Larson, who’s leaving Big Red for the much smaller T-Mobile USA due to Verizon’s stance on net neutrality. On this episode of the Weekly, we’ll talk to Chris and find out just what he’s prepared to sacrifice, and ...

Pocketnow Weekly 081: Lenovo buys Motorola, Galaxy S5 fingerprints, & interview with special guest Ryan Negri

When you can kick off a tech podcast with a string of expletives taken right from your publication’s teamwide chat records, you know it’s been a crazy week in the news. The Lenovo Motorola deal, announced late yesterday afternoon, threw our whole week -and perhaps our whole world- into disarray, and we’re grateful for the chance to sit down and talk it through on today’s show. But the news doesn’t stop there. Galaxy S 5 speculation is still coming fast and furious, with details like Samsung’s rumored fingerprint scanner beginning to take shape; ...

Galaxy Gear 2 with bendable screen coming in March/April at London event?

A recent report speculates that a certain Galaxy Gear 2 with bendable screen will be launched by Samsung at a London special event taking in March or April (end of Q1, beginning of Q2). The smart watch will fix many of the issues (not necessarily with the hardware, but with the entire philosophy and functionality) of the initial Gear that wasn’t received as well as Samsung thought on the market. Sources talk about a flexible OLED display to replace the current screen of the Gear, and a totally new design should be expected once the product is ready for prime time. The report says ...

What I want from the Galaxy Gear 2

A watch that simply tells the time just doesn’t do much for me.  I’ve been using smart watches since the early Microsoft S.P.O.T. devices hit the market in 2004. If you include the Casio calculator watches from the 1980′s and 1990′s, my experience predates the time I’ve spent with smartphones and even PDAs. I tried a few of the Sony “smartwatch” offerings, but wasn’t too impressed. Then the Pebble came along and it’s adorned my wrist ever since. ...

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 might launch sooner than you’d think

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch arrived to a mixed reception. While hardware elements like a high quality display and integrated camera were praised, its high price and limited compatibility helped put a damper on interest. If you were hoping to get something a little different than what Samsung ultimately delivered, it sounds like you may not have that long to wait, with a new rumor suggesting ...
