Samsung brings unlocked, low-cost Galaxy J3 and J7 to the US with modest hardware, Android 7.0

The unlocked US Samsung Galaxy J3 and Galaxy J7 are certainly affordable, but are they affordable enough for their outdated specs?

Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge tipped for Sprint, Boost and Virgin release on January 6

In addition to an entirely new upper mid-range Galaxy A family, Samsung is widely expected to continue expanding the humbler J smartphone roster over the coming months, including stateside, where at least one major carrier will reportedly pick up the entry-level Galaxy J3 Emerge in just a few weeks.

Sprint has been both a postpaid and prepaid supporter of the J3 (2016) this year, and so it doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the modest 5-incher’s sequel is headed to the Now Network, as well as daughter operators Boost and Virgin Mobile.

No words on pricing yet, but we can definitely hope for a sub-$200 tag on Sprint, and around $150 as far as its prepaid subsidiaries are concerned. A few bucks more, and not a lot of budget-minded mobile device consumers will be happy getting just a 5-inch 720p screen, octa-core Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 5MP main camera, 2MP selfie shooter, 2600mAh battery, and Marshmallow software goodies.

Granted, that’s a vastly improved spec sheet than the one attached to the 2016 edition. But that’s mostly because times are changing, low-end Android competition heating up, and industry veterans having to adapt to new standards imposed by ambitious rookies and rising Chinese stars. Design-wise, by the way, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge doesn’t look great. So, yeah, let’s hear $200 tops on January 6.

Walmart unveils full Black Friday 2016 deal roster, cheap phones, tabs and wearables galore

America’s number one discount retailer, which just so happens to also be the world’s largest company by revenue, today follows the comprehensive Black Friday 2016 preview trend by laying all its (heavily marked down) cards on the table for the consumer and competition to catch a glimpse of.

As far as our mobile-first readership is concerned, we probably have to start breaking down Walmart’s mammoth 36-page holiday deal ad with a special mention for free $250 gift cards offered alongside any Apple or Samsung phone activated on AT&T Next or Verizon device payment plans. Any iPhone or Galaxy qualifies, mind you, not just the 7 and S7.

Other standout Walmart gadget bargains compared to Target’s BF steals include a $99 no-contract iPhone 5s and $249 Samsung Galaxy S6 on Straight Talk. If you’d rather sign up to a more popular prepaid operator, Verizon’s $39 Galaxy J3 or AT&T GoPhone’s $49 Huawei Ascend XT sound like pretty solid budget options too.

Then you have several super-low-cost Fitbit wearables, ranging from a $69 Flex 2 to a $129 Charge 2, and both Android and iOS tablets on sale, including a $99 Lenovo Tab 3 10.1 and $200 iPad mini 2. For your living room entertainment needs, Walmart can hook you up with $25 Chromecast 2 or Roku Express Plus HDMI dongles, and all the festivities begin Thursday, November 24, at 6 pm in physical stores.

Avoiding the long lines and inevitable brawls for that last $300 Smart 4K TV is a piece of cake, as digital aisles will be stocked with millions of discounted items all day Thursday. So, yeah, you’re basically looking at a Black Thanksgiving here.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini inches closer to Marshmallow update

While Samsung certainly did a better job than the average Android device manufacturer in pushing Marshmallow updates to today and yesterday’s flagships of late, it’s still a little disappointing to see so many otherwise solid mid-range models stuck on old-fashioned Lollipop. But we now have surprisingly good ...

Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) serves up $110 portion of Marshmallow on Verizon

Contrary to popular belief, Samsung can be competitive in the low-cost Android scene when it sets its mind on it, with the Galaxy J3 (2016) acting as living proof both internationally and stateside.Granted, it took a while for the low-end 5-incher to go wide on US shores, first seeing daylight on prepaid-specialized Sprint subsidiaries Boost and Virgin Mobile back in January, then going on sale in a

Multiple Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) benchmarks reveal full low-end specs

If you’ve started to find Samsung’s alphabet soup of entry-level and mid-range phones pretty much as confusing as the company’s old product lineup and its respective branding, it seems as though the market-leading OEM has similar issues keeping track of A or J-series releases.Case in point, the upcoming Galaxy J2 (2016), aka SM-J210, benchmarked through AnTuTu, GFX Bench and Geekbench with specs reminiscent of the J3 (2016) that barely saw daylight last fall in China,

AT&T picks up affordable Galaxy Express Prime, Express 3 and J3 Marshmallow phones

It took far longer than we had wished and expected, but finally, Android 6.0 software goodies are becoming the norm instead of the exception for even low-cost new devices.Case in point, a trio of prepaid and postpaid smartphones sold by AT&T for less than $200 apiece. One model is available already through the nation’s second largest carrier both on and offline, while the other two will barely roll out on May 6 for reasons we don’t fully understand.Perhaps their Marshmallow ports aren’t ready for primetime yet, as

Samsung Galaxy J3 for AT&T, J7 for 2016 leaked

Mid-rangers have been the filler for this part of the month, but they’re pretty important bread and butter in terms of making money for their manufacturers. US carriers welcome the affordable Samsung Galaxy J3

Like any good smartphone manufacturer, Samsung’s always looking for ways to keep its product lineup fresh, and last year that meant introducing a number of new J-series models.
