NVIDIA is throttling its RTX 3060 GPU to deter cryptominers and please gamers

The huge industry-wide semiconductor crisis has affected domains ranging from consumer electronics to automobiles. Among the worst hit was the gaming segment, triggering a massive shortage of new GPUs as well the next-gen consoles powered by them. And to further exacerbate the problem for gaming enthusiasts, cryptocurrency miners also called their dibs on the new wave of graphics cards. NVIDIA is trying to address the crypto-induced shortage by throttling its latest GPU – the GeForce RTX 3060 – to deter cryptominers from buying it and ensuring that gamers get their hands on it.

NVIDIA is reducing the hash rate of its GeForce RTX 360 GPU by half

The GeForce RTX 3060 will be up for grabs starting February 25, and before it could go on sale, the company has made the move. NVIDIA says that the RTX 3060 drivers will detect cryptocurrency mining algorithms and reduce the hash rate – which is essentially the cryptocurrency mining efficiency – by a margin of 50%. With its decision to halve the hash rate, NVIDIA says it is preserving GeForce RTX GPUs for gamers.

NVIDIA is launching CMP HX series of GPUs for miners

However, NVIDIA is not alienating cryptocurrency miners. In fact, the company is catering to them with a new line of CMP HX GPUs that are tailormade for cryptomining. The graphics hardware giant has launched a total of four NVIDIA CMP HX series GPUs – 30HX, 40HX, 50HX, and 90HX – to address the demands of Ethereum miners.

CMP HX GPUs come with certain design tweaks to make them more efficient at cryptomining

The CMP HX GPUs come with a few design tweaks that make them an even better solution for mining cryptocurrency compared to the graphics cards made for consumer PCs. “For instance, CMP lacks display outputs, enabling improved airflow while mining so they can be more densely packed. CMPs also have a lower peak core voltage and frequency, which improves mining power efficiency,” NVIDIA said in its announcement.

The fully open, airflow-optimized bracket design of the new cryptomining GPUs ensures that multiple graphics cards can be controlled by a single CPU. The new NVIDIA CMP HX GPUs will be offered by the likes of Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, and PC Partner among others.

NVIDIA’s entry-level GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card goes on sale starting February 25

NVIDIA unveiled its latest entry-level desktop graphics card – the RTX 3060 – a month ago. Back then though, the company only revealed that it will be available in late February, without revealing a specific release date. That is finally changing. NVIDIA has today announced that the GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card will be up for grabs starting February 25. As per the company’s original launch announcement, the likes of Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, and Zotac will offer its latest graphics solution.

It will set you back by $329 in the US

At the moment, the official NVIDIA online shop has not listed the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU, but the slightly more powerful RTX 3060 Ti is already up for grabs starting at $399.99 for the Founder’s Edition. As for the vanilla GeForce RTX 3060 desktop graphics card, it will set you back by $329 in the US.

Based on the Ampere architecture, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 desktop-class GPU comes equipped with 3,584 CUDA cores and has a base clock speed of 1.32GHz (and boost frequency of 1.78GHz). You get 12GB GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit memory interface. NVIDIA has armed it with the improved second-gen ray-tracing cores and the more efficient third-gen Tensor cores.

3,584 CUDA cores, 12GB GDDR6 memory, and DirectX 12 Ultimate support

As far as features go, the GeForce RTX 3060 offers support for DirectX 12 Ultimate and a host of NVIDIA’s proprietary technology that includes DLSS (to boost frame rates and improve graphics), NVIDIA Reflex (for reducing input lag and making games more responsive), and NVIDIA Broadcast (an advanced suite of audio and video tools) to name a few.

Taking about raw performance gains, the new NVIDIA offering is said to bring 2x boost at rester performance and 10x improvement in ray-tracing performance (compared to the GeForce GTX 1060 GPU). Plus, the new Resizeable BAR PCI Express technology allows the CPU to access the entire GPU memory at once for a higher performance boost while playing demanding games.

NVIDIA unveils RTX 30 series laptop GPUs and GeForce RTX 3060 desktop graphics

NVIDIA has had a busy day at CES 2021 today. The company has just announced the RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops based on the Ampere architecture. The new mobile GPUs announced by NVIDIA include the GeForce RTX 3080, GeForce RTX 3070, and the GeForce RTX 3060. The first wave of laptops powered by the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3070 will hit the shelves starting January 26, while machines rocking the GeForce RTX 3060 GPU will make their way to the market next month.

Higher efficiency, better performance and refined acoustics

Based on the 3rd Gen Max-Q technology, the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops are claimed to offer up to 2x ray-tracing throughput, thanks to the second-gen ray-tracing cores. Additionally, the 3rd gen tensor cores are also claimed to be 2x more capable compared to last-gen GPUs based on the Turing architecture. And thanks to support for the proprietary NVIDIA Reflex technology, the new laptop GPUs are said to further reduce latency and boost responsiveness.

The third-gen Max-Q design is claimed to offer general improvements in areas such as efficiency, performance,  battery, and even acoustics. With the RTX 30 series laptop graphics, NVIDIA is also introducing the Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology that relies on AI to adjust power uptake by the CPU, GPU, and GPU on a per-frame basis. This tech will be enabled by default on all laptops powered by the new NVIDIA mobile GPUs.

Over 70 laptops with GeForce RTX 30 series GPU will debut this month

Another new tech debuting with the RTX 30 series GPUs for laptops is Whisper Mode 2.0 that is baked at the system level and dynamically adjusts settings (CPU, GPU, and game presets) as well as fan speed to offer the best audio output. Additionally, the Resizable BAR technology allows a laptop’s CPU to access the entire graphics memory of a GPU to boost performance (read: higher frame rates) while gaming. This feature will be available via driver updates.

As for the laptops powered by NVIDIA’s new RTX 30 series mobile GPUs, some have already been announced such as the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, Alienware m15 R4 and m17 R4, Asus TUF Gaming Dash F15, MSI GS66, and the Lenovo Legion 7 among others.
