Camera showdown: OnePlus 3, HTC 10, LG G5, Galaxy S7, Huawei P9

This year we started producing Real Camera Reviews. Today it’s not uncommon that the only camera a person might own is the one bolted to the back of their phone. As such, we’re trying to treat smartphone camera reviews the same way we might try to examine all of the pros and cons of a standalone camera. We’ve tackled some of the best shooters released this year. We’re about to see another batch of smartphones released in the second half of 2016. Before we get to reviewing Notes and iPhones, let’s take a ...

Are modular smartphones overrated?

Modular phones are becoming a thing. Or so LG hopes. One of the most popular modular phones of later has been Project Ara, Google’s modular device that will have a Lego-like structure of swapping out components that are sold out of lunch wagons. I’m not even making this up. This is an interesting concept since it adds two things to your phone which cannot normally be added – longevity and ease of repair. LG’s modular design adds a new dimension to the equation – expandability. But the question is, are those things that the modern smartphone needs? Or is the ...

Have smartphones reached a point where specs no longer differentiate them?

Every year, OEMs put out newer and better phones. Of course they do. What’s the point of a new generation if it’s not better than the last, right? But some OEMs, notably Apple, have taken to using more vague descriptors of their smartphone components. They say things like “all day battery life” or Apple’s famous “retina display”. The problem with descriptions like this is they are either highly subjective, or they don’t really mean anything from a specification standpoint. But here’s the thing. We are fast entering a world where most flagships are going to have basically ...

How important is smartphone audio output (and how important are the accessories you use with it)?

One of the least talked about things on a smartphone is its audio output. Don’t get me wrong, people do talk about it. But compared to camera, battery life, and other considerations, audio output is one of those “nice-to-haves” rather than a necessity. Sure, we love our front-firing speakers, but at the same time, we’ll happily accept a rear or bottom firing speaker if the rest of the hardware is up to snuff. We might ding it in the review with a sentence or two, but that’s about the extent of it.OEMs have started to push superior audio in some of their ...

LG G5 Review: Disruption Starts With a First Step (Video)

Back in February when we were briefed by LG, the company claimed the main inspiration for the G5 was, quote on quote “to wake up our play instinct” and end the boredom surrounding smartphones lately. The era of experimentation ended in 2007, and the market is currently in desperate need for a shake up. Whether LG has achieved that goal has been a major topic for debate and controversy over the last few weeks, and it’s now time to reach our final thoughts and conclusions.Innovation is hard to come by these days. Ever since the first iPhone launch, competitors have stopped ...

LG G5 vs Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and S7

When it comes to choosing the right smartphone this year, companies like Samsung and LG could not have made it more complicated.Samsung and LG are both in very different stages with their respective flagship offerings. Last year Samsung was experimenting with metal and glass on the Galaxy S6, and LG decided to play it safe with the G4. Today the tables have turned. Samsung has now decided to refine what it started, while LG has decided to boldly go where no smartphone has gone in a while. As a result we’re left with a very difficult comparison since one product is naturally at a better ...

24 hours with the LG G5

In the honeymoon phase, first impressions are everything, but just like certain relationships are more complex, some smartphones should never be judged by just one video. The LG G5 is unlike any other smartphone we’ve reviewed in years. The last time modular design was popular was more than a decade ago with the COMPAQ iPAQ, and at a time when smartphones have begun to get boring, the G5 is a breath of fresh air. Instead of having to choose between great design or expandability, LG tries to solve both with the G5, and this is both good and bad.Watch our first impressions video as we go ...

LG G5 Unboxing: Modular is just the beginning

Like that best friend you haven’t seen all year, so is the UPS guy that brings your LG G5 to the front door. The LG G5 is definitely unlike any other smartphone we’ve seen this year. The company not only continues its legacy of expandability, but has done so in a design unlike any other that we’ve seen in the smartphone world to date. From addressing the horrible antenna lines we see everywhere else with a neat little trick we’ll discuss later, to offering expandability in every dimension without compromising in design, and that dual camera at the back is something ...

You’re not going to buy the LG G5, so why all the attention?

Smartphone trends are really interesting to watch. We get a lot of feedback from our readers. We get a ton of comments on our videos. There’s an idea that people spend their money based on merit, a rational analysis of pros and cons. If you ask a general consumer why they bought the phone they did, they can usually justify the purchase, but were those the actual reasons that convinced them to spend their money? For Western tech fans, the first big fight of the year will land between LG and Samsung. Galaxy S7 vs LG G5 will be a ridiculously common article and video title, and ...

LG G5 Rumor Roundup: Everything you need to know

The LG G5 is expected to be one of the hottest phones of 2016. There are tons of rumors that point to the company playing with a bold new design that might be smart enough to cause some disruption in the market. LG continues to be one of the few companies, if not the only one that still believes in bringing power-user expandability to its users. Hopefully the LG G5 will prove that the company will continue that legacy, and if not, then it proves that the company needs to re-think its approach for the future.Watch our video to learn more, or read up on it
