HTC exec explains the black area with the HTC logo on the One (M8)

The HTC One (M8) has received positive overall feedback — and there’s a reason why it scored so high in our full review — but at the same time there were voices on the internet — cause that’s what HTC is telling you, to “ask the internet” — that were not satisfied at all with the black space below ...

New HTC One (M8) Dot View case goes up for sale

HTC absolutely hit the ball out of the park when it comes to retail availability for the just-launched 2014 One. Granted, not every carrier has it in stores just yet, but even making it available to just one on the same day the phone’s announced is a major accomplishment; who among us isn’t sick of waiting weeks if not months between launch day and when we can actually get our hands on these products? But while the new One itself has been for sale for a few days now, the same couldn’t be said about

New HTC One (M8) caught massaging benchmark scores

Tale as old as time, true as it can be, someone writes a benchmark, then someone goes and cheats. Last year, a minor scandal swept over the smartphone industry, with the discovery that certain smartphones were going out of their way to score highly on benchmark tests. Basically, rather than naturally governing performance (CPU core speed and task distribution between cores) in a way that would reflect real-world operation, manufacturers were hard-coding their phones with lists of known benchmark apps, and

HTC made a mistake, but maybe it’s one we can live with

HTC released a phone earlier this week, you may have heard of it. The HTC One M8 was unleashed on the world, and available for sale right away. This puppy is a beauty, let me tell you. It’s solid and beautiful and all Oh-Em-Gorgeous. Just looking at that spec sheet is enough to make you salivate. Snapdragon 801 processor. A gorgeous 5” SLCD3 1080p display. WOW! MicroSD Support! A 4 Mega pixel camera on the front. And on the back….oh wait. That’s on the…on the back? On the BACK?!?! Oh great! Another HTC mistake! That’s pretty much how the conversation went everywhere. Our own

Okay HTC, we’ve got the phone, now give us the marketing

One of my favorite shows of all time is Joss Whedon’s Firefly. Like most of Whedon’s shows, a passionate fan base quickly emerged. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after just one season, and none of the networks wanted to pick it up for a second. Why? The numbers weren’t that great. The characters, the sets, and the story were all fantastic. So why did it do so poorly? Even

New HTC One (M8) updates: developer/unlocked sales, teardown

One day post-launch, and HTC’s new One continues to attract a ton of attention. We’re trying to keep in mind that there’s a lot more going on in the smartphone world than just this one phone, but honestly, we could probably cover nothing but the new One for days to come – there’s just so much buzz around it. In the interest of hitting a few bits of M8 news all at once, we’ve got a couple new One stories to check out, concerning sales and the phone’s hardware. Yesterday

New HTC One (M8) will be slightly more powerful in Asia

Smartphone fans in Southeast Asia seem to have it pretty good: not only do they get access to dozens upon dozens of models not otherwise released in the West, but often they’ll end up with enhanced versions of the smartphones we get over here. Look no further than last year’s Galaxy S 4, which after showing up in the US with its Snapdragon 600 SoC, became available in South Korea with a Snapdragon 800, poised to tackle new LTE-A networks. As it turns out,

BlinkFeed and Zoe coming to non-HTC Androids

The new HTC One is here, and not just the phone’s hardware itself, but also its new software. The One arrives running Sense 6.0, which will soon be going out to existing HTC models. In our review of the smartphone, we went into some depth looking at the full extent of the software HTC’s bundled in, including things like the BlinkFeed content aggregator and Zoe for creating effortless ...

Who wants a new HTC One (M8) running Windows Phone?

Ready for a little déjà vu? Last year, right on the first day of summer, we heard a rumor that HTC was working on a new device for its One family of smartphones. This wasn’t the One Mini, though, and the One Max was still months away; instead, we heard that HTC could be cooking-up a handset very similar to its flagship One, but running Windows Phone 8. Sadly, nothing else really came of that rumor, but this year a new spin on the old idea is back in full effect, with claims arriving that HTC could be developing a ...

Here’s why I’m getting the HTC One versus the Samsung Galaxy S 5

If you’re looking to buy a phone and the one at the top of your list has been around for a while (the Nexus 5, for example) you could easily take it for a spin. For devices that have just been released (or are still awaiting release from certain carriers), or if you’ll be ordering your phone online, going “hands on” before pulling out your wallet may be a luxury that you cannot afford, or may be impossible depending the part of the world you call home. In those situations, sites likes Pocketnow try and take the guess work ...

HTC recruits another celebrity for new One (M8) commercials

Why can’t HTC seem to compete with its smartphones on quite the same level as Samsung? Both companies have put out some fantastic hardware, but while Samsung sales set the benchmark against which we compare everyone else, HTC struggles to even turn a profit. While the question is a complicated one with no easy answer, one factor often pointed to as having a major influence is Samsung’s success with advertising. Last year we saw HTC try to capture some of Samsung’s magic with a high-profile ad campaign starring ...

HTC One M8 vs HTC One M7 (Video)

“Does the new One live up to the legacy of its forebear?” That’s the question our very own Michael Fisher asked in the intro of our comparison video below. Albeit worded a tad differently, that very question is one that’s been lingering in the back of our minds since the first time the name “M8” crept into headlines across the Internet. So … does it? HTC certainly made improvements in particular areas that needed it, changed some things ...

HTC One M8 (2014) review: an elegant smartphone for a more civilized age

The down side to success is the pressure to keep on succeeding. HTC’s 2013 flagship, the original HTC One (M7), defined “successful” in nearly every way. We awarded it one of the highest review scores we’d ever bestowed on a smartphone, a reception mirrored by most of the tech community. “Bravo HTC,” we said of its stellar industrial design and innovative new features. Our opinion stayed
