Next MacBook Pros: Much faster processors, MagSafe, upgraded displays, and no Touch Bar

Apple is reportedly planning to upgrade its MacBook Pro laptops this year. The company might introduce new, much faster processors, and the return of magnetic charging. As per a report, the new laptops are planned to have MagSafe charging with the similar elongated pill-shape design of the older MagSafe port. However, Apple is not going to remove the USB Type-C ports as it will include “multiple USB-C ports” on its future Macs.

The latest development comes from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg who wrote a report and cited “a person with knowledge of the plans.” Apple is said to be working on refreshing both 14-inch and 16-inch variants of its MacBook Pro. The former is codenamed J314 and a 16-inch version internally dubbed J316. Both these devices will move away from Intel processors and will be powered by the next-generation versions of Apple’s in-house Mac processors. These processors will be upgraded with more cores and enhanced graphics.

Upgraded chips with up to 32 cores?

For the unaware, Apple is tipped to be working on a series of new Mac processors that are aimed at outperforming Intel’s fastest. The next custom chip, which is planned for release as early as the spring and later in the fall could power the upgraded versions of the MacBook Pro, both entry-level and high-end iMac desktops as well as a new Mac Pro workstation. Apple is also working on chips with more GPU cores. For the unaware, the M1 chip comes with either seven or eight GPU cores. It is said that the company is currently testing models with 16 and 32-cores. These could be seen on the upcoming MacBook Pros.

The display and design will see some changes as well

Further, the forthcoming devices are also rumored to get upgraded displays. These will be brighter, higher-contrast panels as per the report. Another change is how computers will charge. The upcoming Macs could mark the return of MagSafe on laptops. Over the past five years, Apple has relied on USB-C ports for both power and data transfer on its laptops. However, the company is said to be bringing back its magnetic power adapter. It will allow the laptops to charge at a faster rate.

Goodbye, Touch Bar?

The report goes on to say that Apple has also tested MacBook Pro versions without the Touch Bar. The feature was introduced in 2016. It turns the keyboard’s top row from function keys into a touchscreen strip that can display a variety of information. It changes controls as per the needs of apps and tasks. However, it is not very convenient for some professionals.

As for the design, the new Macs will look similar to the current versions, albeit with minor design changes. Apple is planning to launch its new MacBook Pros by the middle of this year. That said, the company is also planning a redesigned MacBook Air but it is not expected to release anytime soon.

OnePlus Health app gives us our first clear look at the OnePlus Band

There’s a couple of companies that are great at leaking their own products, but let’s be real, no one does it better than OnePlus. Earlier this week they teased the design of their upcoming OnePlus Band, showing a corner of it and now, well we get to see everything. The company just listed an early access phase for their Health App which will be used to record things like your heart rate, steps walked, sleep patterns and more, you know the usual. In the App’s Description, it mentions both a smartwatch and fitness bands. And once, you get to the app, you can see the OnePlus Band’s full design, including the display turned on. According to the leaks, the OnePlus Band will feature a 1.1in AMOLED display, with around 14 days of battery life and a $40 price tag, but it will be launched in India first. So yeah, to the rest of the companies, take note.. This is how you leak a product

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook gets a successor at almost half the price

Let’s move on to Samsung but back to the official news. Last year at CES, and I know I’m getting flashbacks of tradeshows, the company announced their Galaxy Chromebook, which started at $999. Well, the company just announced the successor, which has a better price, with a couple of logical changes that make sense for the type of product it is. See, instead of a 4K OLED, it now features a 13.3in QLED FHD display, with the entry level model being powered by an Intel Celeron 5205U, Intel UDH Graphics, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The higher tier variant is powered by an Intel Core i3, and it brings up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You’re getting, 2 USB Type-C ports as well as a microSD card Reader. Of course, it runs on Chrome OS, it brings other features like Wi-Fi 6, S-Pen support and Stereo Speakers. Where it gets interesting is that now, it starts at just $549, with the higher tier one going for $699. We awarded last year’s unit as one of our Best of CES and I think now it’s an easier award given the drop in price and updates, I actually prefer QLED displays.

We receive new details of Apple’s possible iPad refresh

A couple of weeks ago we covered some rumors of Apple getting ready to refresh the entry level iPad, which got a refresh last year. According to a new report from Mac Otakara, the new iPad would arrive with the same 10.2in display we get on the current model but like other reports mention, it will take some design cues from the old iPad Air. This means that we’ll receive a significantly thinner device, more or less 6.3mm thick when compared to the 7.5mm we have right now. The new design will also weigh around 30g less than the current model. The report also claims that this iPad will still bring the Home Button, meaning Touch ID is still alive, and that Cupertino will also use a Lightning Port over USB-C for this iPad. Previous reports also claim that this iPad will bring Cupertino’s A13 Bionic, 4GB of RAM and it’s getting a price cut, down to $299. Rumors suggest that we should get it by Spring 2021, but let’s see as we got the last one in September.

Going back to Samsung, let’s discuss the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as we know that last year we got the first generation model with the S20 but, it looks like we’ll have to wait until the third quarter of this year. Now, we have some renders of the possible design from Let’s Go Digital, showing what we could be getting this fall. Now, we don’t know if this is fan made or the real deal since this is both early, and also because this design comes from a Korean forum and it takes elements from the Galaxy S21’s design when it comes to the camera and the lilac color variant with the gold hinge and accents. At the front we get pretty much the same design from last year but with the gold accents. Now, probably the most interesting thing here is the outer display, which has way more space than what we got last year, showing you the time, date, battery and it has way more room for notifications. Thing is, even if we’re skeptical, I kinda hope this is actually the final design because I do like it a lot.

                                Story of the day:

Kuo: iPhone camera hardware could get better until 2023

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s talk Apple and the iPhone 13 once again as, the rumors don’t seam to slow down even if we’re early. According to Ming Chi Kuo’s latest report, Apple’s usual three main lens suppliers will be tasked with delivering the components for the 2021 iPhones. However, after looking at the technologies and production lines, Kuo concluded that there won’t be any significant upgrade to the iPhone’s camera for the next 2 generations. Of course this doesn’t mean that the overall performance of the camera will stay the same as, there is still room for major improvements when it comes to software, like what Google has been doing for years. So it looks like Apple will work on perfecting their computational photography and they consider that these lenses are good enough to last an extra couple of generations. If you watched the previous Pocketnow Daily, it looks like Apple wants to focus on the display for the iPhone 13, by shrinking down the notch and finally bringing an LTPO display with high refresh rate.

Apple’s new mini-LED MacBook Air could arrive in 2022

We are once again receiving information regarding Apple’s new mini-LED devices. This time we get rumors claiming that Apple could be planning on giving its MacBook Air a new mini-LED display as soon as 2022.

According to a recent report from DigiTimes, we could get a MacBook Air refresh next year. This information goes along the lines of previous predictions from Ming-Chi Kuo. He believes that Apple is working to give its users a mini-LED version of the MacBook Air, which could mean that we may not see many changes between the latest M1 powered MacBook Air and the upcoming model.

As you may have heard, the MacBook Air won’t be Apple’s first laptop with a mini-LED display. Rumors suggest that the first Macs to include this feature will be redesigned MacBook Pro models. They are also expected to launch late in the second quarter or in the third quarter of 2021 and will most likely feature Apple Silicon chips. However, rumors suggest that we will get a new 14-inch version to launch alongside the well-known 16-inch model.

We are also waiting for Apple to launch an iPad Pro refresh with mini-LED displays in the first quarter of 2021, which means that we may soon get an idea of this technology’s benefits in the upcoming Macs. Kuo says that these new MacBook Pro models will deliver increased brightness, improved contrast, richer colors, and more.

“The sources expect that Apple’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and 16-inch MacBook Pro set to be released in 2021 will be equipped with mini-LED displays and adoption of miniLED will be expanded to its MacBook Air products in 2022.”

It is also said that mini-LED displays won’t have a huge impact on MacBook’s prices since Apple Silicon chips are significantly less expensive than Intel processors. This will help Apple to include this technology in future Macs while still keeping costs under control. It would also increase MacBook shipments, as Kuo believes that Apple will see shipments growing by 100 percent over the next three years, selling up to 35 million units per year.

Apple could finally launch AirTags and a new augmented reality device in 2021

A new research note from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares some light about what we may get from Apple in 2021. And we’re not just talking about the iPhone 13, new iPads or Macs, but new products altogether, as it seems that the long-awaited AirTags may finally be ready to launch in 2021, as well as a new AR device.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could have everything ready to launch its new AirTags in 2021. These new devices are expected to work as Tile’s Bluetooth tracker devices, and they would help us find our keys, wallets, backpacks, and more. These trackers would also notify users on their Apple devices when one of their items goes out of range. Now, these new Apple AirTags are also expected to be managed through a future Items tag in the Find My app, which will also help you find your items in case you have misplaced your stuff.

Apple seems to be also working on a new augmented reality device. The rumors mention a new AR headset or glasses, but Mr. Kuo didn’t expand on the subject. However, he did mention Apple’s plans to release new AirPods, which could arrive in two different sizes. He also believes that we will get new Apple Silicon Macs and the first iPads with mini-LED displays.

Rumors of a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with mini-LED displays have been coming for quite a while now, and some even believed that Apple could’ve even managed to launch them late in 2020. Still, the ongoing pandemic has seriously affected the company’s possible launch dates.

Whatever the case, we are also expecting a new 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh, both of which would arrive with mini-LED displays in 2021. Ming-Chi Kuo also believes that we may see a new MacBook Air with Apple Silicon and a mini-LED display in 2022, with other products like a 24-inch iMac and a smaller Mac Pro-like desktop in a not so distant future.

Samsung Galaxy S20+, Alienware monitors and more on sale today

M1 13-inch MacBook Pro, the latest iPad Air and more deals are live

As expected, let’s begin today with deals, beginning with some devices that are about to get a refresh. Yes, they’re still the Samsung trade-in deals but don’t act like they’re still not crazy. Starting with the Galaxy S20 Series as, you can currently get the S20+ at $500 and the S20 Ultra for $600. The Z Fold 2 is still available for $1000 bucks, and the Note 20 Series still start at $450. Then again, you still need an eligible device to trade-in so keep that in mind. Staying with Samsung but moving ion to Amazon, the Galaxy Watch 3 is currently $130 off, leaving it at $350 and the Galaxy Buds are $51 off, leaving those at $79. The M1 MacBook Pro is $60 off, leaving the 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage model for $1240. Finally, the Platinum Surface Pro 7 and a Black Type Cover is $230 off, meaning you can get it for $800 at the Microsoft Store. We have more deals on the 16-inch MacBook Pro, other Surfaces and more Samsung products, in the links in the description.

Amazon buys podcast maker Wondery as battle against Spotify and Apple heats up

Let’s stay on Amazon for another segment and we know you want more deals but that’s not the case. It seems podcasts are the new major bet from giants like Spotify and Amazon wasn’t gonna trail behind. Back in September, Amazon Music introduced a new Podcasts feature for the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. Well, less than three months later, the company just announced that they are acquiring Wondery, which is a podcast network that launched back in 2016 backed by 20th Century Fox. The statement says that “when this deal closes, nothing will change for the listeners and they’ll continue to access Wondery podcasts through a variety of provers. With Amazon Music, Wondery will be able to provide more high-quality, innovative content and continue their mission of bringing knowledge and entertainment to their listeners”. The deal is reportedly valued at $300M and is Amazon’s way of letting Apple and Spotify know that they’re taking podcasts seriously.

                                          3, 2, 1, and sold! A prototype OnePlus 9 5G has exchanged hands for $3,000 on eBay

Let’s talk about OnePlus for a second as, something very interesting just went down when it comes to all the leaks plaguing it. We’re currently gearing up for the OnePlus 9 Series and if you remember, about a month ago we got some hands on images revealing the design. Well, apparently that was a prototype and that same prototype was just sold on eBay for $3000. It was originally listed last week for $6000 as a OnePlus 9 5G prototype, unlocked for all GSM carriers. This device is running a test build of Oxygen OS, meaning it probably has a crazy amount of bugs and it’ll most likely not get a software update. So yeah, so far we’ve gotten multiple leaks, including some specifications that show the Snapdragon 888 5G, a 120Hz display, 65W wired charging and 30W wireless charging. We’ll most likely get around 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and a triple camera array at the back, we just hope that even the regular model brings that rumored Leica sensor. If OnePlus finally takes the leap to a trusted brand like Leica, this could change everything, though that includes the price.

Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro might arrive in two sizes

We’ve been covering a good amount of rumors of the upcoming AirPods and AirPods Pro and it looks like we’re getting more than what we expected. According to some new leaks from Mr. White, we might be getting the second-gen AirPods Pro in 2 different sizes. He tweeted some pictures of the flat connection relays for them, showing that there are two sizes for them. However, there is a possibility that one of them might be for the “AirPods Pro Lite” which will simply be dubbed as the 3rd generation AirPods and it makes sense as all of the rumors hint to these adopting the current AirPods Pro design language. The tweet also mentions that they will be using W2 chips which will be a successor to the W1 chip we get in AirPods and some Beats headphones, that’s what enables the seamless pairing and it apparently also plays a role in conserving battery life. We’ll see if at the end we end up getting two different sizes for the AirPods Pro which would be pretty cool or, if these are just the 3rd Gen AirPods and the 2nd Gen AirPods Pro. Whatever the case may be, let’s just hope they don’t bring AirPods Max prices.

iPhones dominate US smartphone activations on Christmas Day 2020

Now how about if we discuss statistics. Take a whild guess over which was the phone that was most activated this holiday season?. Well, we have some new numbers from Flurry Analytics on the Top 10 US Smartphone Activations that happened on Christmas Day. Believe it or not, the graph shows that 9 out of the 10 phones were iPhones, with the LG K30 at number 10, doing some Michael Jordan-like Numbers for LG and the whole Android market for that matter. What’s crazy is that the iPhone 11 and the XR keep being Apple’s top drivers at number 1 and number 2, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the 12. The iPhone SE also made the cut at number 6, with the other phones being the 12 Pro, 11 Pro Max, the 8 and the 8 Plus. Now, according to them, this is a normal trend as, the newer higher end devices generally surge around to the early adopters, with the rest of the consumers adopting it later. They also mentioned that it doesn’t mean they sold more, it was just a more popular phone at this time. Now an interesting tidbit is that smartphone activations also went down 23% when compared to last year for obvious reasons, this has been a really tough year. We just wonder what demographics bought less this year, and hope 2021 sees a more even distribution.

                                          Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21+ looks hot in new leaked images

Here’s your first look at the official protective cases for Samsung Galaxy S21 series

And finally, when it comes to the hottest news today, don’t act like you weren’t expecting the Galaxy S21 Leaks, because they’re here. Like we mentioned on the previous Daily, most of the leaks have been focused around the Ultra but, now the other devices are getting some love from tipsters. Back on Monday, we got a full list of specs for the S21 and the S21+ and now, we have some IRL hands on images for the S21+. These images come from a tipster on Twitter showing almost everything you need to see. This is the lilac variant for the phone which brings a rose goldish triple camera array, and we also get to see the flat display with the punch hole that still comes in the center. We also have the usual dose of case leaks from MySmartPrice that confirm all of the design elements we’ve seen for the past couple of months, from the colors to the camera arrays. As a recap of the specs, the S21+ is expected to bring a 6.7in AMOLED display running at 120Hz, it’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 888 or the Exynos 2100, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 4800 mAh battery. At the back you should expect three cameras which consist of a 12MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra wide and a 64MP telephoto. We just wonder what Samsung’s new design language is gonna be called this year

Apple will fix M1 Mac issue not supporting certain resolutions with ultrawide monitors

Apple’s new Macs powered by the in-house silicon M1 silicon has been well-received so far, with a lot of praise being directed towards the performance and battery life jump they bring to the table. however, it appears that the M1 Macs are having trouble recognizing certain resolutions when connected with ultra-wide and super ultra-wide monitors. Apple is aware of the problem and has promised to roll out an fix via a macOS update.

A third-party app called SwitchResX helps get rid of the issue.

“If you connect an ultrawide or super-ultrawide monitor to your Mac with Apple M1 chip, some resolutions supported by your display may not be available,” Apple says in a support document spotted by the folks over at Macrumors. In case you are connecting your MacBook Pro, MacBook Air or the new Mac Mini powered by the M1 chip, try pressing and holding the press Option key while you click Scaled in the Displays section of System Preferences. Apple recommends this trick, and it actually appears to have worked for a few users plagued by the issue.

                                          Source: Reddit

As per a few user complaints that we’ve so far come across on Reddit, ultrawide monitors with resolutions such as 5120×1440 pixels work fine when connected to an Intel-powered MacBook, but the maximum resolution they can achieve when connected to an M1 Mac is 3840×1080 pixels. A third-party workaround appears to be working for some users though. For those experiencing resolution scaling issues when connecting their M1 Mac with an ultrawide monitor, an app called SwitchResX apparently solves the issue.

READ MORE: Microsoft Office apps get a performance boost as they now run natively on M1 Macs

The aforementioned third-party app trick has worked for many M1 Mac users plagued by the problem, but a native fix via a macOS update is the best way to go. In case you’re seeing the issue, make sure that the connectivity standard is right. Apple has specified that the HDMI 2.0 interface on the M1 Mac Mini only supports 4K resolution, while the Thunderbolt port goes up to 6K, both at a peak refresh rate of 60Hz.

Sony pulls Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store, offers refund to disgruntled players

Let’s move on to Cyberpunk as, the game finally rolled out but, it’s no secret that the developers were eventually rushed to put this out, resulting in a lot of bugs, and I mean a lot, especially for previous gen consoles. So much so that one of the biggest stories this weekend was how Sony ended pulling it from the PlayStation Store due to complaints from angry players for PS4. SIE also put out a statement saying that “they strive to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore they will begin to offer a full refund for the gamers that purchased Cyberpunk through the PlayStation Store and that they will be removing it until further notice.” Once they get confirmation that you purchased it through them, the refund processing will begin and, it is also available for the Xbox One version. Apparently there was some issues with the main partners so, if you have an Xbox the refund process might not be so smooth for you. Some of the bugs include very choppy frame rates, screen tearing, weird physics in general throughout the game, or even players disappearing or just showing up out of the blue. So yeah, one of the most anticipated games ever has become a fiasco, and seriously, I wouldn’t want my money back, just fix the damn game!

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirms a smartwatch is coming early next year

Now let’s talk OnePlus as last week we talked about how Pete Lau went on an interview and confirmed the possibility of a OnePlus Watch. Well, it looks like it’s almost a done deal now. Pete just went on Twitter earlier today and said “Many of you said you wanted a watch and as you might’ve heard, we’re making one and it will be released early next year”. Last week we talked about how they want to achieve a more seamless connection between the Watch and other OnePlus products, kind of like the Apple Ecosystem and this makes it seem like they have actually made some progress. A OnePlus Watch was certified in Singapore about a month ago and it’ll apparently bring a Circular Dial, a design language that goes along with those sketches that date back years ago and of course, it will run on Wear OS with an Oxygen OS skin on it. We’ll see how early in the year we get it if it’s a silent release or if we’ll have to wait until the OnePlus 9 Series.

Apple among the first in industry to reap the benefits of TSMC’s 3nm process: Report

Now let’s switch gears to Apple and seriously talk about just how aggressive the company has been lately. We know that Apple was the first company to announce 5nm chips with the iPad Air, iPhone 12 with the A14 Bionic and even the M1 Macs, and it looks like TSMC doesn’t plan to slow down. According to a new report from the United Daily News, Cupertino might also be the first in the industry to offer computer and smartphone chips based on a 3nm process. The report claims that Apple was the first to get in touch with them about the 3nm fabrication process as they want to rely on this new process for the next-gen M Series Chips as well as the A-Series that will go in iPads and iPhones. Now, where it gets kind of bittersweet is where we hear that it will most likely go into mass production until 2022 but don’t worry, next year’s products will most likely bring a 4nm process which will reportedly be announced in 2021. So yeah, it looks like TSMC should already be prepping their next 4nm processors but, Apple is already looking further down the road.

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 leaked in all its glory

Samsung First Look 2021 event set for Jan 6; could include new display tech and products

I know, we’re getting closer to Galaxy Unpacked where we’re expecting the S Series but, we thought that was going to be Samsung’s first event of 2021 but that won’t be the case. The company just put out press invitations and a teaser for their “First Look of 2021” Event which will be livestreamed on January 6th on their website. The teaser shows the silhouettes of different products, mainly displays which serves as a pretty good hint on what we’re getting. Samsung hasn’t really revealed anything but rumors hint to them introducing new MicroLED, miniLED, 4K and 8K QLED TVs at this event. Another thing that we might be getting is the new Galaxy Chromebook, to follow up on what we got at this year’s CES. This Chromebook was leaked over the weekend by Evan Blass, showing some official-looking renders of the device. It looks very similar to the previous model but it brings re-arranged ports and different color patterns. The biggest change will most likely be the internals according to Evan, with a new Intel Chip as well as a built-in fan. We’ll see if we get at least a teaser of the S21 at this event as we’re supposed to be getting it some time in January.

                                          Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy S21 series pricing leaked again, and it is both good and bad news

Don’t expect the Samsung Galaxy S21 to come with a power adapter

And finally the hottest news today have to do with, you guessed it, Samsung, and the event we were expecting, which is their possible Galaxy Unpacked. Yesterday we covered some leaked price tags along with official renders of the Ultra from Evan Blass. Today we have a little bit more of that as well as some other information. Let’s begin on a hilarious note as, if you remember last month we covered how some certifications pointed to the S21 Series not bringing a charger or headphones in the box. Well, over the weekend, Samsung deleted their posts mocking Apple over removing the iPhone 12’s charger and how they didn’t bring 120Hz refresh rate to the iPhone. So, last time we talked about them the posts were actually still there but.. They’re not any more so, it looks like that’s a done deal. Moving on from that, let’s talk price tags once again. Yesterday we talked about US price tags but now we get some for the European market from Winfuture which also add to the ones we got yesterday. According to these leaks, the S21 will start at €849, the S21+ will start at €1049, with the S21 Ultra starting at €1349, all for 128GB of storage. Now, these are both good and bad, good because they’re still cheaper than what we got for the S20, it’s a serious price difference for the European market which really doesn’t get the same chip we get in the US
