Minuum’s Will Walmsley on creating the keyboard of the future

It often seems there’s a direct correlation between the widespread use of mobile technology and typos. Let’s face it: being precise while typing on a mobile device can be a real pain, and the autocorrect only makes things worse at times. How often have you sent a text message or an email only to discover an embarrassing mistake a minute later?Although there are plenty of keyboard apps aimed at taking the frustration out of mobile typing,

5 reasons you should really give Minuum a try

When I first saw the Minuum campaign on Indiegogo, I was sold.I’ve said for years that the way we type on smartphones doesn’t make sense. Gesture (or trace) typing is a logical step forward, as was predictive and context-aware input. But that doesn’t answer why we’re still using the same keyboard layout which works best for 10-finger typing. Why do our smartphones use the same keyboard layout that was designed over a century ago to prevent typewriters from jamming? Why do ...

Minuum demos its linear keyboard on Android Wear

Smartwatches present some real challenges when it comes to user input, but despite the cramped quarters their screen dimensions afford, companies behind keyboard software have been pretty enthusiastic about coming up with usable solutions for these tiny displays. Minuum’s been especially vocal about smartwatches, and that makes a lot of sense, as its unusual linear keyboard is highly adaptable to non-standard screen layouts. It showed us its keyboard on the Galaxy Gear, teased how a round Minuum ...

Keyboard maker embraces circular displays of Android Wear

Smartwatches may be more popular today than ever before, but even with rising public interest, they still have a few major hurdles to clear. Battery life continues to remain a challenge, but the use of tech like wireless charging promises to help make things a little smoother. There’s also the problem of input; voice command sounds like it’s going to be the gold standard, but how are you supposed to interact with your watch when you need to be quiet? When you’re somewhere like a ...

There is no excuse for a subpar keyboard in 2014

As a long-time proponent of BlackBerrys, I was particularly adverse to the idea of soft keyboards back in 2009. I had gotten so used to the renowned BlackBerry keyboard that I was skeptical I – or anyone else, for that matter – would ever be able to type as efficiently as one could on a pocket-sized physical keyboard, especially those on BlackBerry handsets.I’m not sure I’m getting my point across. I really liked BlackBerrys, its physical keyboards, and hated practically everything ...

Pocketnow Weekly 080: HTC M8 x, Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a $50 Motorola smartphone & a resurgent BlackBerry

”Our revels now are ended, Kirk.” That’s a quote from Star Trek VI, paraphrasing a line from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In the latter instance (minus the “Kirk” bit) it’s a conceit of sorts, an admission that the play is a falsehood – and an observation that so, perhaps, is life. In the former example it’s a wisecrack from a Klingon bent on shooting our favorite captain’s ship out from under him. In both cases, it’s a kind of farewell. And in today’s example, it’s also a goodbye – to the old times. ...

Smartwatch on-screen keyboard demo actually seems pretty usable

The small size of smartwatches makes them extremely portable (and we wouldn’t strap them to our wrists if they weren’t) but that’s also what leads to numerous problems: if we could give smartwatches batteries the size of those we use in smartphones, our power concerns would go out the window. Size also plays a role in how we enter text on these devices; voice-based text entry sure can seem like an elegant solution, but not every social situation is going to be appropriate for speaking text aloud. Is there any hope for on-screen keyboards with screens this small? ...

Minuum linear keyboard beta hits Google Play Store

Software keyboard Minuum caught our attention back in March, when we heard about the crowdsourcing effort underway to help fund development. By this summer, we were already learning about efforts to get those backers involved in testing the keyboard, with its unusual linear arrangement of keys, but it didn’t sound like there was going to be a similar option available for inserted users who missed out on the Indiegogo campaign. If you fell into that boat, ...

Is this the future of typing on your smartphone? (Video)

Despite how far technology has advanced and all the new devices that have come to be in the past century, we’re still using virtually the same exact method to input text – the QWERTY, Dvorak, or some similar key layout. Who’s to say those are the most efficient layouts for entering text via mobile? Why would a key layout made specifically for a typewriter also be the best layout for pocket-sized devices that didn’t exist until well over 100 years after the invention of the typewriter? More and more people are beginning to

Innovative Minuum linear keyboard beta arrives next week for backers

Back in March, we heard about an interesting new twist on software keyboards, upon learning of the Indiegogo funding project for Minuum. Unlike nearly every other keyboard out there, Minuum elects to place all of its letters in one straight row. That frees up a ton of screen real estate, and users are also able to move the keyboard around as they see fit – no need to just keep it docked at the screen’s bottom. The project ended up raising far more money than it set out to do, and backers have been looking forward to the ...
