New iPhone 13 could finally arrive with a smaller notch

It is not the first time we get rumors claiming that the new iPhone will arrive with a smaller notch. Still, the last iteration of Apple’s iPhone came with the same notch as previous models, even though it may appear even larger in the iPhone 12 variant. However, it seems that this time, it may really happen, as we get new information saying that we will get a new and smaller notch design in the iPhone 13.

Well, according to the latest report from Digitimes, the upcoming iPhone 13 may finally feature a smaller notch design. The design change may be because Apple’s new 3D sensing module won’t need to be as large as the notch we have in current iPhones. Now, that’s not the only change, as rumors say that every single iPhone 13 variant will also include ToF sensors in the back, which would be supplied by II-VI. Since we’re already talking about cameras, the iPhone 13 Pro variants are also expected to get an extra telephoto camera.

Jon Prosser also took his time to talk about the report and the upcoming iPhone 13. He explains the camera module’s design and placement inside the device and how the lens that’s closer to the center of the device has to be placed slightly lower to make room for the components under the notch. Now, if Apple manages to make this change, we could see a smaller notch, like the one found in a hardware sketch of an iPhone prototype that appeared back when the iPhone 11 was under the spotlight.

He also advises his viewers to take the report with some salt, as we all expected the iPhone 12 to arrive with a smaller notch, but in the end, we received the same huge notch Apple users have come to love. Further, the new iPhone 13 is also expected to feature WiFi 6E support, which offers the features and capabilities of WiFi 6, which will provide higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates. It will also extend into the 6 GHz band, increasing bandwidth and less interference for devices that support WiFi 6E.

Apple may be working on a way to include sensors behind its displays

Well, it seems that Apple is trying to get rid of the notch for real this time. A patent filed back on April 5, 2019, reveals that not only the notch may disappear from future iPhones, but we may also see bezels get smaller in future Apple devices.

The guys over at Apple Insider found a newly released patent that suggests that Apple is constantly working to find a way to move sensors away from the bezels and into the screen itself. This would eventually lead to a future iPhone with an edge to edge display, and other devices such as iPads, iMac, and MacBooks with tiny bezels, meaning that Apple could give its users bigger displays without having to increase the size of a device.

The patent application describes a “Sensing System for Detection of Light Incident to a Light Emitting Layer of an Electronic Device Display,” which basically consists about placing the detector within an active area of a Display. Apple also explains that “an electronic device can include a display formed from a stack of functional and structural layers (a ‘display stack’) attached to, or otherwise disposed below, a protective outer cover,” when referring to the top of the device which would also include the bezels.

“An electronic device can also include a light sensing system, such as an ambient light sensor. Typically, a light sensing system is positioned below the protective outer cover, adjacent to, and separated from, a light emitting region of the display stack.
“The individual light sensors of the light sensing system coupled to the controller are disposed or formed directly onto one or more layers of the display stack that defines the active display area.
“As a result of this construction, the light sensing system may be able to detect light incident to the active display area, even if one or more of the groups of individual light sensors is occluded or covered by a user.”

It’s not clear how this may work or if it ever does, but looking at it from a positive point of view, we can say that Apple may not be so proud of its notch after all, and it’s continuously looking for ways to get rid of it. Unfortunately, the full-sized notch will still be present in the upcoming iPhone 12 lineup, but we may see it get smaller starting next year with the arrival of the iPhone 13.

The notch may finally become smaller in the iPhone 13

Love it or hate it, the notch was the easiest and fastest way to get rid of huge bezels in smartphones, while still making enough room for the selfie camera and other components. The first company to include this design change was Apple with the arrival of the iPhone X. We have seen Android OEMs follow the same path, while others have opted to include pop-up mechanisms or punch-hole displays to give us more screen real state. Now, Apple may have finally found a way to reduce the notch’s size in its devices; unfortunately, we may have to wait for the iPhone 13 to see changes.

The notch in Apple’s iPhones has remained basically unchanged since its first appearance back in 2017, with the arrival of the True-Depth camera system and Face ID. However, well-known leaker, Ice Universe, believes that the notch will finally decrease its size in next year’s iPhone 13. He also tries to illustrate the possible changes with a couple of rough sketches, which lead us to believe that the notch will be significantly smaller in height, meaning that it will stick out less from the display’s borders.

Previous rumors had suggested that the iPhone 12 would be Cupertino’s first iPhone to feature a smaller notch and 120Hz refresh rate displays, but it seems that we will have to wait until next year to see these changes. Still, we may see one notch getting smaller in the upcoming lineup, as rumors claim that the notch in the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini will be narrower than the rest of the devices, but this would be because of the phones smaller screen size. Now we only have to wait and see if Apple fans will go for this year’s iPhone 12 or if they will wait patiently for another year to get a smaller notch, 120HZ displays as well as possible under-display cameras, in-display Touch ID, and more with the iPhone 13.

The folding phone, an entirely different device, will be late to arrive as well. And the early part of the year will see a mid-ranger take hold.
