For all of the company’s device marketing and distribution progresses lately, OnePlus continued to disappoint on the software support front, especially as far as the recurrently troubled X was concerned.
But the mid-ranger did ultimately receive its over-the-air Marshmallow love, and by combining the Android-skinning efforts behind OxygenOS and HydrogenOS, OnePlus took a solemn oath it would speed up future platform updates.
That may well happen sooner than you think, with Nougat goodies apparently headed for the Chinese OEM’s newest flagship phone later this month. Before Android 7.0 can roll out to the OnePlus 3 user masses, of course, a few community builds will be available for brave public beta testers.
If everything goes smoothly, and prospective bugs can be quickly squashed, a polished OS makeover could follow with a relatively large-scale delivery by the end of the year, i.e. sometime in December.
It would be the ultimate Christmas gift for existing OnePlus 3 owners, while those still on the fence about the 5.5-inch Snapdragon 820 powerhouse might want to wait and see what 3T’s deal is. Perhaps the oft-rumored SD821 spin-off is to run Android 7.0 Nougat out the box.
Don’t give up on the OnePlus 2 either, formally guaranteed now to move beyond Marshmallow too… eventually, with the One and X however probably left behind for good.
