Sources point to big steps in LG wireless charging tech

Wireless charging is still nice and all, but laying the phone onto one specific position on a flat surface is so passé. We’re still a good time away from extended range wireless charging, so what are the mobile hapless to do? Watch ...

Wireless charging was awesome, so what happened to it?

Those of you who are familiar with my work know that I’m a huge proponent of wireless charging, or inductive charging. In the world of mobile it is one of those things that just feels like using the future. It’s so cool, and so convenient, it really perks me up just thinking about it. Just plop your phone down on a pad, or a table and you’re juicing up. The convenience of it is incredible. It’s even easier than reversible connectors like lightning or USB-C connectors because it doesn’t require a second hand. When you have kids, a second hand is not something to be taken for ...

AirFuel Alliance springs forth from wireless-charging merger of PMA and A4WP

Wireless charging standards for smartphones got off to a bumpy start, and beyond shopper confusion over which handsets supported it at all, we had some competing, incompatible implementations to deal with: head over to Starbucks intent on charging your phone via table-top PMA wireless pad, and you might be out of luck if your phone only supports Qi charging. But this year things are really improving, and beyond the arrival of hardware designed to work just fine with multiple charging standards, ...

Yes, the new Galaxy S6 Active totally supports both Qi and PMA wireless charging

Wireless smartphone charging has sure taken its sweet time entering the mainstream, lacking a lot of support from both manufacturers and carriers, but little by little, it’s been getting there. This year has easily been one of the most high profile for the technology, with support for the feature not just baked in to flagship devices like the Galaxy S6, but also receiving a lot more support on the charger side, like with what IKEA’s doing with embedded chargers in furniture. But even with these ...

Two wireless charging standards groups announce merger

Why isn’t wireless device charging more popular than it is? We could spend all day offering reasons (and occasionally we do), from speed, to cost, to the lack of bundled chargers with devices that support them. One of those myriad reasons is the fear of incompatibility, a situation not helped any by the lack of a universal wireless charging standard. The good news is we’ve already seen steps being taken in the right direction towards resolving that situation, and this week we get word of a ...

Higher-power, faster wireless charging due for 2015

Mobile device manufacturers are always looking for the latest hot feature to capture the public’s attention. Over the past few months, we’ve seen several efforts to draw shoppers’ eyes to the notion of fast charging – power adapters able to push so much juice into our phones that we’re charging them to capacity in a matter of minutes, not hours. And while that’s all really great, it’s not doing much to help promote another big power-related tech: wireless charging. Sure, wireless charging can be quite convenient, but it’s also a bit slow. ...

Will improved distance win over wireless charging nay-sayers?

For many of us who have gotten a taste of wireless charging, there’s no possible way we can picture ourselves going back to old-fashioned wired charging. Sure, I still plug my phone in while I’m in the car, but that’s simply because I haven’t found a wireless charger that satisfies my needs (not yet, anyway).Wireless charging is tremendously convenient. In the wireless charging world, we don’t see charging as a distinct act. It’s not something we physically do. Instead, charging simply “happens” when we set our phones or tablets on our ...

Starbucks going national with (the wrong) wireless phone chargers

Wireless charging for smartphones is slowly but surely pushing its way into the mainstream, as more phones arrive with support for the tech either built-in or easily added with the help of official manufacturer accessories. But for as promising as this all stands to be, there’s a bit of a wrinkle that still needs to be addressed: charging standards. The problem is that the industry is embracing multiple, incompatible standards, and while technology may soon arrive to make that fight a moot point, for the ...

New York City is a fine place to sneak a peek at some unreleased devices, and that’s just what we did this week with the LG G3 event (streamed from London to an airy presentation room in a Chelsea skyscraper) and AT&T’s ASUS PadFone X announcement (held on a posh rooftop lounge near the Flatiron). At one of those events, Daniel Bader of MobileSyrup was our seat neighbor, so we thought we’d invite him on this week’s podcast to discuss the more globally significant of these high-profile launches.Join us as we share our impressions of the LG G3: how it stands on ...

The US Lumia 1520 has the wrong kind of wireless charging. Thanks, AT&T!

I’m writing this editorial while sitting in a Boston-area Starbucks, which means two things: 1) yes, I’m one of those pretentious jerks who writes in public, and 2) I’m seated next to a wireless charging plate embedded in the tabletop. The hardware is unobtrusive, just a glossy disc about three inches across, mounted flush with the table. At first glance, it almost seems like a permanent coaster, a structural suggestion from management encouraging you to “put your drink here.” Only on closer inspection does the Powermat branding become evident, with tiny text ...
