Apple’s latest M1 MacBook Air, Mac mini and more devices on sale today

Let’s begin today’s deals with some products that you should really consider getting, that are not at all old. The latest M1 MacBook Air which is being used to edit this video is $50 off, that leaves the 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD variant for $1200. If you’re going for a desktop, the new Mac Mini is $29 off, leaving the entry level model for $670. The latest 12.9in iPad Pro is available for $150 off, that leaves it at $1499 shipped for 1TB of storage. The brand new iPad Air is also $40 off, leaving the entry level one for $559. We also have more deals on Bose Earbuds, LG Monitors, Hisense TVs and more, in the links in the description.

The budget OnePlus Nord N100 has a ‘high refresh rate’ surprise

Now let’s talk about OnePlus as the company has been in the spotlight quite a bit given all the product launches they’ve done this year. A few weeks ago, OnePlus unveiled two new budget smartphones, the Nord N10 5G and the N100. We’ll be focusing on the N100 for this segment because, this is supposed to be the cheaper and watered down one out of the pair but it looks like there was some hidden premium features in here. So to recap, it packs a punch hole HD+ display, the Snapdragon 460 SoC, a 5,000 mAh battery and a triple camera array with a 12MP main sensor. All of this for around $237, remember that price. Well, now that it’s out, the guys over at Android Authority discovered that the N100 actually packs a 90Hz refresh rate display. OnePlus didn’t specify on this so everyone just assumed it was a regular 60Hz panel which is good for that $200 price tag. So yeah, if you got this phone, make sure to turn that feature on as that 5,000 mAh battery should do a good job handling it.

New iPhone 12 display issues have caught Apple’s attention

If you’ve been watching us for the past year, you probably know that my display on my iPhone 11 Pro simply died on me after getting a weird tint. Well, it looks like the iPhone 12 might be going down that same path. Last weekend, some users started reporting issues with the 12 mini’s Lock Screen sensitivity, and iPhone 12 Pro users were having problems with the message app but, the most notable problems were display issues. Apparently some users were getting a green tint on the screen and some flickering but it looks like Apple noticed. The guys over at MacRumors recovered an internal document where Cupertino addresses this issue, saying that they are aware of the customer reports related to the problem and they’re actively investigating, telling technicians to avoid servicing these types of issues because there is no real fix at the moment but they should advice customers to update their phones. Back with the 11, Apple fixed it with iOS 13.6.1 so, let’s see when we get a fix, we’ll keep you posted. Thing is, my problem wasn’t fixed with a software update. The entire phone had to be replaced, so we’ll see.

Apple’s next mobile chip might rely on 5nm+ process, 4nm silicon likely arrives in 2022

Let’s keep talking about Apple but, this time about there chips, as let’s face it, Apple Silicon still has many of us in disbelief. We know that the A14 Bionic was the first chip in the market to bring a 5nm process, thanks to TSMC but, it looks like they’re already pushing smaller nodes. According to a TrendForce research note, Apple plans to use TSMC’s next generation “5nm+” process for the A15 chip that will come in the 2021 iPhones. TSMC’s website says that this 5nm+ process, refers to N5P which is a “performance-enhanced” version of their current 5nm process, which will deliver additional power efficiency and performance improvements. The report even goes further head to 2022, and they believe that the A16 will be built on a 4nm process, which paves the way for even more performance, power efficiency, and density improvements. This also hints that we might get these improvements in Apple Silicon chips, maybe with the M1X, M2 or whatever that thing is going to be called. Thing is, guys with that M1 mopping the floor with absolutely every Intel Mac we’ve compared on generation 1, can you imagine what gen 2 will be. We’ve never EVER recommended a first generation Apple Product, but this is the first exception.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra leaked renders show shows some seriously slim bezels

And I know, we’re still one segment away but let’s begin with the hottest news today which have to do with Samsung. Yeah, they’re so many we had to split them in two. First off, Ice Universe just went on a tweeting spree giving us a ton of new information on the upcoming Galaxy S Line. He started off by posting some new CAD renders of the S21 Ultra which shows us the new chin and side bezels which.. Let’s just say you won’t be able to tell a difference if you have an S20 Ultra. However, he does say that this will be the narrowest chin in mobile phone in history which is something Samsung has been perfecting over the years. Other than that the CAD renders show the USB-C port as well as the display’s footprint. Moving on from that he also posted some case molds where you can see the camera module for the S21 or the S21+, sadly you can only see the display side for the other 2. Finally he also said that the S21 Ultra’s screen will refresh multiple records, I’m not sure if that means we’ll be getting something like ProMotion or if it will just be a record-breaking display. Whatever the case may be, I’m already pretty excited for whatever this S21 Ultra is going to be.

Story of the day:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 could have an under-display selfie camera

But, finally let’s move on to the other segment of the hottest news as we have more Samsung products and apparently, Samsung is bringing the heat until later in the year. Last month there was some rumors roaming around that claimed that Samsung would be introducing their first under-the-display camera with the Z Fold 3. Well, now there’s a new ETNews report that backs those rumors. According to an industry insider, Samsung Display has developed a new display that will support this UDC. Apparently they made the gap between pixels wider, to allow light to pass through and this will only be a thing in the selfie camera area, the rest of the display will be the same. That along with some special algorithms will correct images, as light is obviously refracted by the OLED Display to allow for the camera to work. This camera module will be supplied by LSI and apparently the technology won’t be ready by the Spring or early in the year, which is when we get the S Line or the Z Flip. So, we will reportedly get it with the Z Fold 3 in the third quarter of the year because, all of the rumors point to the Galaxy Note line disappearing. A new Ice Universe tweet also gives us backs this by saying the Z Fold 3 will bring a lot of innovating technologies, including this Camera Under the Panel, the S Pen and the second-gen UTG.

Apple’s latest M1 MacBook Air, Mac mini and more devices on sale today

We start today’s deals with the new MacBook Air with Apple’s latest M1 Chip. It is currently available for $1,200 in its 512GB SSD version with 8GB RAM, which translates to $50 savings in one of today’s most powerful laptops available in the market. Now, if you don’t want a laptop, the latest Mac mini is also on sale. You can get yours for $670 after its first $29 price cut, and you will get 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM.

If you’re looking for a new tablet, the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 1TB storage and cellular connectivity can be yours for $1,499 after a $150 discount, or get the latest Apple iPad Air with 64GB for $559 in its WiFi-only version, which will save you $40.

The Moto RAZR 5G, OnePlus 8 and more devices are on sale today

The official news today, as always begin with deals, and this time for products you might still want to get, and some I also do debate. One list of ones I debate there’s the new Moto RAZR 5G. I don’t see a lot of people going crazy over it, and it might be the reason why you can currently get it for $999 on Amazon and B&H. Now those of you wanting an even better deal, Best Buy has it for $949, but that’s actually after activation. Now we know that many of you are concerned about the curse of the early adopter with Apple’s new M1 Macs, for you, the previous generation MacBook Air is currently $149 off, leaving the entry level variant for $850 on Amazon. Those of you interested in iPad Pros, Amazon also has the 2020 11-inch entry-level variant for $749, or even $849 for more storage, making it an equal $50 off. Finally we have the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 with a $61 discount, leaving the 45mm variant for $369 or $339 for the 41mm variant that’s Bluetooth only. We have more deals, including Hisense TVs in the links in the description.

New macOS Big Sur is finally ready for your Mac

Now as for other official news today, let’s talk about Apple and it’s current roll of announcements. If you remember, MacOS Big Sur was going live today, and yes, it’s now official. That said, those of you who rely on services like Final Cut Pro and other Apple Pro services, my advice is that you proceed with caution as some of these are still not upgraded for compatibility. Sure they’ll most likely work, but also crash in the process. That said, if you ordered any of the M1 Macs, some of us have already received notifications of shipment. Delivery times still appear November 17th to 18th, but if you do the math, they might arrive earlier than expected. For those early adopters, it’s great to see that there are major apps already upgraded for compatibility, like the case of Microsoft Office. The news went official today, though universal compatibility for this new version still seems in beta. Anyways, let me know who ordered any of the new Macs, cause after seeing videos from TLD and Snazzy, I’m excited for what’s coming, but more on that in the hottest news segment.

The next iPad mini could pack A14 Bionic chip and an 8.5″ display

And how about if we continue talking Apple, but this time for the iPad that I’ve been wanting to get in like for ever, but that I’m also waiting for it to get a refresh. I’d wait for the next one if I were you as we’re talking about some major upgrades according to a tipster, starting with the new A14 Bionic chip that powers the new iPhones and iPad Air. It seems we’re getting a more modern smaller bezel design like in the pro with an 8.5-inch Liquid Retina display, most likely on the same chassis. Finally a jump to USB-C, though the same speaker array we currently have with the mini, that’s not necessarily amazing. Same cameras as iPad Air 4, Apple Pencil 2 support, same 2 batteries that aren’t doing so well lately, and 4 Gigs of RAM. At this point I can only assume that the same Touch ID on the power button will also make the cut. Sadly we don’t have any timing on this new iPad Mini, but I’m gonna be the first to be excited about this smaller form factor.

Unlimited Google Photo backups will be unavailable with future Pixel phones

Now let’s do a little continuation to the controversial news from yesterday. Yes, Google Photos won’t be free unlimited storage any more as of June 1st, unless you have a Pixel. That said, it seems it only applies to current Pixels. On a new report from Android Central, it seems that every other Pixel in the future will be treated as a regular phone. This means that unless you own a Pixel 2 and up to the Pixel 5, anything that happens further will take up from your 15 Gigs of base storage, which according to Google, is enough to last you for 3 years of memories. The main problem being, we still have uncertainty over what’s going to happen in June. We don’t know if the existing photos currently uploaded will be dumped into the 15 gigs, and leave you without space, pretty much like iCloud does. Regardless of the case, we read your comments and yes, this is a major problem, which is sad as this was one of the few reasons I was still sort of locked into the Google ecosystem.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra might offer S Pen support, but no docking slot

How about if we switch gears for a bit and talk about Samsung, this time to discuss something we’ve been waiting for the company to do for years. No, it’s not for the company to say goodbye to its Exynos chips. Yeah, it’s the other thing… Think about it, how long has it been rumored for Samsung to say goodbye to the Galaxy Note and merge it with the Galaxy S? Well it seems that 2021 might finally be the year cause we’ve got Tipster Extraordinaire Ice Universe hints that the S Pen will be supported, but there’s a catch. The tweet is clear that it’s only the s21 Ultra, and a separate tweet from Max Jambor claims that there won’t even be a silo for the S Pen to fit. That might actually not be a bad idea as this will allow you to get a larger power pack within, which makes sense at a time when this phone is rumored to ship without a charger, and also that it’ll support a more power-hungry 2K display that supports 120hz. Whatever the case may be, this doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the death of the Galaxy Note, but if you remember there are also patents for a Galaxy Z Fold 2 supporting an S pen, so it could just be that Samsung might blend the products into one. We’ll see.

Story of the day:

MacBook Air with M1 Chip is more powerful than 16-inch MacBook Pro

And finally, the hottest news today have to do with Apple, and its new M1 chip Macs, as people have complained that there’s really nothing new when it comes to design, but I think we’re not looking at the bigger picture. See, Apple is notorious for is not providing information on things like the clock speed of their new M1 chips, or the kind of RAM they include. Those of you wondering just how powerful these new Macs are, let me just say I’m already regretting buying a 16-inch Pro. The new fan-less MacBook Air just went through Geekbench, and it seems to blow even the that 16-inch Pro. It brought single core scores of 1687 and a multi-core score of 7433. To provide some context, this means the M1 blows past all mobile Macs, Pro or non Pro, all current Mac mini configurations and a good deal of the iMacs. That includes the late-2019 MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9-9980HK processor clocked at 2.4 GHz. Funniest part is that the test was conducted with the entry-level MacBook Air with just 8 gigs of RAM running MacOS 11.0.1. If these results hold true to real world use, we’re not just talking about a faster computer. Think about it, this is a fan-less MacBook Air that costs a thousand bucks. I think it’ll be a true paradigm shift in pro computing, cause can you imagine that MacBook Pro?

Xiaomi Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: Is this the budget TV to pick this Diwali?

With the launch of the Mi TV 4A series in 2018, Xiaomi saw immense success in the smart TV space in India. The affordable smart TV lineup helped Xiaomi acquire a good percentage of the smart TV market in the country. Now, it has refreshed the lineup with the launch of Horizon Edition TVs that bring slim bezels, Vivid Picture Engine, Mi Quick Wake, and more features to the range. I’ve been using the Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition 43-inch TV for two weeks and here’s our review of the same.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: Build and Design

The first thing that you’ll notice about the TV is its weight. It’s on the lighter side at 6.65 KG and is easy to pull out of the box and set up on your own. The TV as well as the legs are made out of plastic that helps minimize the weight. I found it fairly easy to screw the legs as the screws remain slightly tilted in their position. While you might find it wobbling a little while setting up, the legs are solid, and once set up, it won’t topple.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review

Notably, you don’t get a wall mount in the box. So if you want it to be mounted, you’ll have to contact Mi and purchase a wall mount separately. All the ports reside on the rear left side of the TV. For connectivity, you get three HDMI ports (one with ARC support), two USB-A ports, an Ethernet port, and a 3.5mm audio output. They are fairly easy to reach and I had no hiccups while setting up my PS4.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition ports

Coming to wireless options, the Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition supports Bluetooth 4.2/BLE and 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. You miss out on dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity. That said, I didn’t face any difficulties connecting to the network. It must be noted that I set it up 10 meters away from my router. Hence, I didn’t experience buffering or lags while streaming content.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: How’s the display?

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review

On the front lies a display surrounded by slim bezels helping it achieve a 95 percent screen-to-body ratio that adds to the immersive experience. It is definitely a 2020-ish design. The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition features a 43-inch LED panel that supports a full HD+ (1920 x 1080) resolution with a 178-degree viewing angle. Moreover, it comes equipped with a Vivid Picture Engine (VPE), which helps deliver vibrant colors and deeper contrasts.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition bezel

Xiaomi offers various preset modes to tweak the picture quality. The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition includes Standard, Movies, Vivid, Sports, and Custom modes. I was happy with the Standard mode, but Sports definitely helps while watching cricket matches. As for Custom, it lets you adjust the brightness, contrast saturation, sharpness, and hue to your taste. You don’t really need to fiddle with the settings much as the Standard mode is enough for regular content. However, while watching the IPL matches I noticed that the green field was more saturated than it should be, and the contrast was unpleasant at times.

Overall, it is a good display for the price, and you can tune it to your liking.

The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition also supports a dynamic backlit option that allows you to adjust the display intensity to make darks appear darker. It helps if you are watching movies like The Dark Knight or a TV show with dark visuals in general. Plus, it isn’t reflective as the display sports an anti-reflective coating. So you need not worry about seeing your reflection in the TV instead of the dark sequel.

That said, I enjoyed watching The Office – which has a light tone – on this display. I sat either in front of the TV or within a range of 120-degrees and didn’t notice any color shift. Hence, it has good viewing angles as well.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: Is the audio good?

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review

The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition comes equipped with two speakers of 10W each. They support DTS-HD technology as well. You can choose between preset modes like Standard, News, Movie, Game and Custom. It also features a digital noise reduction (DNR) feature to remove noise from the signal, which helps if you’re using a set top box. The audio is definitely room-filling, but the clarity is average.

You are likely to be satisfied with the audio if you are watching regular web series. But if you are someone who is purchasing this TV to watch action movies, I’d suggest you invest in a soundbar as well. Plus, audio sounds muffled at times while playing games on the PS4.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: What about the UI?

Coming to the user interface, this TV runs Android TV OS 9 out of the box. Plus, it has Xiaomi’s proprietary PatchWall interface baked in. You can quickly switch between the Android TV interface and PatchWall UI. While Android TV OS lets you access and downloads a number of Android apps the PatchWall UI is more content-oriented.

While Android TV OS lets you access and download a number of Android apps the PatchWall UI is more content-oriented.

I like the out of the box UI as well as the PatchWall interface, but I prefer the latter, and it’s mostly because it displays the popular card on top. Hence, I was just a click away from watching the IPL match that was currently live. Further, this UI supports set-up boxes and seamlessly integrates content from both DTH service as well as OTT apps. Plus, if you have something connected to one of the ports, it is fairly easy to access from PatchWall UI.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review

The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition comes pre-loaded with popular OTT platforms including Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and more. Moreover, you get integrated Google Chromecast so you can stream content via your smartphone.

There is also a Universal Search feature that searches for content across all OTT apps. You can also press the Google Assistant button on the remote and open the app you want to access. However, it doesn’t recognize the exact content. For instance, I said, “Play IPL match” and it opened YouTube.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review: Remote and Power

The remote follows a minimalistic approach like most other smart TVs. It comes with a power button, navigation wheel, home, back, Google Assistant, Mi button for PatchWall, home button, and volume buttons.

I missed the mute button on the remote.

Moreover, you get Netflix and Prime Video hotkeys as well, but a mute button is missing. Notably, the home button always takes you to the Android TV OS even if you were on PatchWall UI previously. Overall, the remote is slim and easy to use, but I’d like the presence of a mute key.

Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition review

The processing prowess on the Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition is managed by a 64-bit quad-core Amlogic Cortex-A53 processor with a Mali-450MP3 GPU, which is also present in most of the other Xiaomi TVs. Further, it comes equipped with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It helps run the TV smoothly.

I didn’t come across any major lags or hiccups. It is fairly responsive with apps opening within seconds and installing new apps from the Google Play Store. Plus, there’s Mi Quick Wake that lets you turn on the TV within 5 seconds after switching it off. Notably, it switches on with the home screen and doesn’t resume playing content where you left off.

Verdict

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition is a good value for money. The display is vibrant, the colors are bright. Plus, the slim bezels make it all more immersive. It is responsive, and PatchWall UI makes it easier to use.

The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition is an easy recommendation.

It is priced at INR 13,499 for the 32-inch variant and goes up to INR 22,999 for the 43-inch model. The Mi TV 4A Horizon Edition is an easy recommendation at this price.
