Surface Laptop 4 nears launch as official Microsoft support pages go live

It looks like a Surface Laptop refresh is on the horizon. Alleged images of the Surface Laptop 4 popped up online back in November, and some of its key specs were leaked earlier this year. Now, official Microsoft support pages for the upcoming laptops have gone live, and they confirm the existence of Intel and AMD-powered variants.

First spotted by leakster WalkingCat (@_h0x0d_on Twitter), there are two separate support pages for downloading drivers and firmware files for the AMD and Intel chip-powered variants of the Surface Laptop. In a separate tweet, the leakster hinted about a Surface launch event happening next week, but so far, we haven’t heard anything official from Microsoft.

11th Gen Intel CPUs, but a generation-old AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors

However, a previous leak claims to have given us an idea about the innards of Surface Laptop 4. Microsoft will reportedly offer the Surface Laptop 4 in two options – 11th Gen Intel processors and AMD Ryzen chips. On the Intel side of things, buyers will get to choose between Core i5-1145G7 and Core i7-1185G7 processors. Microsoft is going to equip the machine with up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD, however, lower-end configurations with 8GB or 16GB RAM and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB onboard storage will also be on the table.

If you’re intrigued by the AMD version of Surface Laptop 4, there might be some disappointment here, as Microsoft is going with the older AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors instead of the new Ryzen 5000 chips. You will get a choice between Ryzen 5 4680U or Ryzen 7 4980U processors, ticking alongside 16 gigs of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage.

Just like its predecessors, the Surface Laptop 4 will be available in two sizes – 13.5-inch (2256 x 1504 pixels) and 15-inch (2496 x 1664 pixels) – retaining the 3:2 aspect ratio. Port selection will again be paltry, as you only get one USB-A port, one USB-C port, and the proprietary Surface Connect port for charging. As for aesthetics, Microsoft is apparently going to recycle the same design for another year.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 leak tips AMD and Intel CPUs with April launch window

Microsoft is planning to update the Surface Laptop lineup, and as per a fresh leak, the new laptops might debut as early as April. According to a WinFuture report, the Surface Laptop 4 will be offered in both Intel and AMD options. The design language will reportedly remain the same, which means we’re looking at a sleek metallic build in a variety of colors to choose from, and likely a choice between Alcantara fabric or metallic keyboard deck finish.

Coming to the internals, the Surface Laptop will offer a choice between Intel’s 11th Gen processors and the AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs. It is interesting to see that Microsoft is going with a generation-old AMD CPU, and not the new AMD Ryzen 5000 processors based on the upgraded Zen 3 architecture. Buyers will get a choice between Ryzen 5 4680U or Ryzen 7 4980U processors. The AMD-powered variants will go up to 16 gigs of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage.

As for the Intel-equipped models of the Surface Laptop 4, Microsoft will offer a choice between Core i5-1145G7 and Core i7-1185G7 processors. However, the Intel-powered models will go up to 1TB NVMe SSD and up to 32 gigs of RAM. For those looking to configure their laptop, they can choose between 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB RAM, ticking alongside 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage.

Familiar design, paltry port selection again, and a 3:2 PixelSense display

The graphics options mentioned in the report mentions Iris Plus 950 integrated graphics for the Intel model, while the AMD version ships with Radeon Vega graphics. Just like its predecessor (VIEW AT AMAZON), the Surface Laptop 4 will be offered in two sizes – 13.5-inch (2256 x 1504 pixels) and 15-inch (2496 x 1664 pixels) – rocking a familiar 3:2 aspect ratio.

Port selection is still quite narrow, as you only get a single USB-C and USB-A port, alongside the proprietary Surface Connect port for charging. Unfortunately, there is no word on how much the Surface Laptop 4 will cost upon its market debut.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Pro 8 images leaked ahead of early 2021 launch

Microsoft has had a busy year in 2020, launching the Surface Book 3 convertible, the affordable Surface Laptop Go, the Surface Go 2 and a refreshed Surface Pro X. However, it appears that the company will start things a bit early next year by launching the Surface Pro 8 and the Surface Laptop 4. And surprisingly, we might already know what they look like.

Twitter user cozyplane had shared alleged images of the Surface Laptop 4 and the Surface Pro 8 from a Korean certification authority’s database. The leaked images suggest that Microsoft is not making any major design changes when it comes to the Surface Laptop 4 and the Surface Pro 8.

Microsoft is apparently retaining the signature metallic chassis with sharp lines and rounded corners. The alleged Surface Laptop 4 appears to be sporting a black paintjob, while the Surface Pro 8 rocks a familiar silver finish. However, it is unclear if the company has tweaked the port selection and or made any other hardware changes to its upcoming Surface portfolio.

January launch, both Intel and AMD chips for Surface Laptop 4

Adding more meat to the leak, Windows Central reports that the new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro series devices will be launched in January. Moreover, the two machines will come equipped with Intel’s 11th gen Tiger Lake processors with the new Intel Xe integrated graphics. Additionally, Microsoft will also sell an option powered by AMD processors, but details about the specific chip family are still unclear.

Microsoft will reportedly launch a new color option for the Surface Go 2 in the same month as well. The report claims that the company might unveil a black trim of the affordable convertible in January. Lastly, the company will finally start the market expansion of its first smartphone in a while – the Surface Duo. So far, the Surface Duo has been limited to the US market, and it appears that Microsoft is finally ready to take it global starting next year.
