Verizon finally activates 5G upload on its Ultra Wideband network

Verizon has today announced that it is finally enabling upload over its 5G Ultra Wideband network in all markets. So far, uploads on Verizon’s network have been limited to 4G LTE, which is far behind the blistering speed promised by the carrier’s mmWave 5G network.

The activation of 5G upload is definitely good news for Verizon subscribers who own a 5G-ready phone, but the speed gain won’t be groundbreaking, at least not yet. Verizon revealed that for now, upload over its 5G network will be roughly 30% faster compared to what you get on 4G LTE.

The company says 5G uploads will be available in Chicago and all 35 cities where Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network is available. Earlier this week, Verizon added the Galaxy S20 5G UW to its lineup of phones that can latch on to its mmWave 5G network, which promises download speeds in the Gbps range.

Only the 128GB storage variant of the Galaxy S20 5G UW will be sold by Verizon in Cloud Pink and Cosmic Gray colors, aside from the Cloud White shade. Pre-orders will kick off tomorrow with a $41.66 plan (24-months) or a straight full payment of $999.99 for the Samsung flagship.

OnePlus 8’s Verizon variant won’t fit a regular OnePlus 8 case, and 5G is to blame here

The Verizon variant of OnePlus 8 is the only one that offers mmWave 5G support and also has a different internal name – OnePlus 8 5G UW. (Yuck). But that added dash of 5G speed also ensures that a regular OnePlus 8 case won’t on a Verizon variant of the phone due to a slightly different positioning of the volume rocker.

The anomaly was first reported by a OnePlus 8 user on Reddit who purchased the device from Verizon and later discovered that a case purchased from a different outlet won’t fit on the phone. The volume rocker on the OnePlus 8’s Verizon variant is placed slightly lower compared to a regular OnePlus 8 purchased from another carrier or store.

An analysis of the US FCC documents by PhoneArena reveals that the mmWave supporting OnePlus 8 sold by Verizon has an extra modem fitted near the volume button, which is why the button had to be moved slightly lower. So, if you purchased your OnePlus 8 from Verizon, you’ll have to buy the compatible case from Big Red, which users report are either out of stock, expensive, or plain ugly.
