Vine Camera will remain as a six-second clip creator for Twitter purposes

The demise of Twitter’s social video site Vine is nearing. The network itself will be kept alive as an archive, but the servers won’t take any more six-second clips in.

What users can now do is download their Vines through the app or website. Vine will also push notifications out, telling followers to follow their favorite creators on Twitter.

One of the big new developments this weekend, though, is the fact that the Vine app will transition into Vine Camera. The modus operandi is the same for a Vine — composite short clips for videos up to six seconds long. The only big change is that users will be encouraged to either post the movie to Twitter or keep them in their picture roll.

Vine first announced its sunsetting in October. Twitter reportedly tried selling itself just prior to that word. The transition is in January.

Vine now on Apple Watch with update

We’ve seen YouTube get crammed into our wrists with tiny keyboards for searching around the whole of it and just a poor viewing experience in general. After all, are you really going to hold up your arm to watch even a one-minute doodly-dad? Tell Marty Cooper that and he’ll simultaneously laugh and be puzzled. That said, we ...

Vine for iOS picks up video import tools

Plenty of apps give you the ability to share short videos on social networks, but Vine, the granddaddy of them all, is still the gold standard. Despite its prominence, the software hasn’t been without its problems, and especially for video fans used to a more flexible editing and sharing experience, the constraints Vine imposes can be a little frustrating to deal with. Luckily, things are improving for the better, and today we catch wind of an ...

Pocketnow Weekly 070: smartphones through the eyes of the blind

Not everyone sees the world in the same way. Of course that’s plainly obvious if you’ve ever spent time in the dungeons comment sections of the internet, but it’s easy to forget that it’s also true in a literal sense. Not everyone sees or hears the same way you might … and that’s as true for smartphone users as for anyone else. So what kind of considerations go into buying and using today’s mobile technology products when you’re visually impaired? What kind of brand wars exist in the world of the blind? Are we going in the right direction with ...

Vine finally launches for Windows Phone

Windows Phone users have learned to live with the app selection on their platform being what it is. While it gets better every day, there are still too many times when official apps simply aren’t available, and users instead turn to third party solutions or outright knockoffs. But then there are those good days, where after a wait that can only be characterized as excessive, we finally see an official port get delivered; that’s where we find ourselves today, getting word that Vine is launching for Windows Phone. Last month, at the ...

Vine and Instagram on Windows Phone are bigger than you think

This is going to sound silly. But one of the biggest eyebrow raising announcements to come out of Nokia World today was the announcement that Vine and Instagram were releasing official apps for the Windows Phone platform.  Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t really use either, and not just because I’m on Windows Phone. I share photos and video via Facebook or Twitter depending on the subject matter. I’ve never had a use for either. Vine and Instagram on Windows Phone is pretty huge. These are probably two of the top ten apps that are often cited as missing from ...

Mixbit is a Vine alternative created by the founders of YouTube

We’ve seen twitter take a stab at video sharing through their Vine service, and then it got plagued with porn in just a couple of days and became irrelevant. Then came Instagram video to compete, and even though the service is ok, it’s far from perfect. Still, with the success of YouTube, you’d assume that video sharing is the next hot thing, and it seems that the founders of YouTube feel the same. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, better known as the founders of YouTube, have now launched a new iOS app called Mixbit, which is funded by Google Ventures. This is very similar to ...

Why I may start using Instagram again

In mid-December, I decided to do something drastic. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that drastic. But I quit Instagram, a service I had been a huge proponent of prior. Before December 18, I had shared a total of 398 photos (not counting the ones I deleted), and spent more time than I care to admit editing photos to share to the service. It was fun, and it was the easiest way to share all the interesting (and sometimes not so interesting) things going on in my life with multiple services at once. Then I had an epiphany. For the ...

Statistics show video-enabled Instagram slaughtering Vine

Back in early June, we were still talking about Vine’s incredible success, and saw its new Android release rocketing up the Google Play charts, cruising right past Instagram. But it wouldn’t be long before Facebook and Instagram had their revenge, and a week ago yesterday we learned that Instagram was going to try beating Vine at its own game, adding some video support of its own. We’ve since seen

Vine for Android update introduces front-facer support

Vine started out 2013 with a bang, and as it pushed beyond iOS and arrived on Android, its momentum seemed stronger than ever. And then Instagram caught up. Last week, we saw Instagram evolve from its old filters-and-photos routine to start capturing video, as well. Not only that, but it offered users the opportunity to record clips over twice as long as Vine’s. Was Vine’s day in the sun over? It may be too early ...

Will Instagram do for social video what Vine never could?

You know, when Twitter launched Vine a couple of months ago, I think I was on the list of people that registered first. I mean hey, I do videos for a living right? It’s only the common thing that I search for even more ways to be able to interact with everyone through a social video tool. The funny thing about it though is that regardless of how fast I registered for the service, I’ve yet to build my first Vine video. As I skimmed through the service, I began noticing a ton of the caveats that made me forget about its existence just a couple of days later, and no, the ...
