Sony Xperia Beta Program draws to a close, at least for the time being

Well, it was fun while it lasted, and in all fairness, it probably lasted longer than many expected. After all, the goal was to get Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact users to try out pre-release Marshmallow goodies, and help shape them up before they could hit the masses, which already went down way back in April. As promised, the Sony Xperia Beta ...

Sony pushes Marshmallow goodies to Xperia Z2 Tablet, more Z2 and Z3 phones

It’s almost impossible to be a major Android device manufacturer and not get flak at some point from disgruntled owners of this phone and that tablet. Either you roll out software updates with great delays (the most common complaint), or you give priority to a newer product over an older, more popular one.Following a habitually late and timid start to Marshmallow promotions however, Sony kicked the upgrading machine into high gear recently, making it very difficult for the OEM’s fans to show any sort of dissatisfaction. The Xperia Z5 family was of course

Sony Xperia Beta Program set to continue until ‘at least the middle of the year’

The news that a trio of older Xperia flagships was finally treated to official, fully polished Android 6.0 updates no doubt pleasantly surprised the vast majority of Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact owners. But there were probably also a few users who deemed the rollout a bit of a bittersweet scenario.Namely, beta testers of early Marshmallow builds, which appeared doomed to have their special support wrapped up. Only Sony isn’t ready ...

Sony spreads Marshmallow love to Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact

To our knowledge, Sony is yet to iron out the kinks that recently put the Android 6.0 upgrade on hold for the Xperia Z5 in certain markets. But a trio of other Z-series devices are now getting official OTA Marshmallow goodies, signaling everything will be alright soon enough for the entire flagship family. You’re looking at major UI makeovers for three fairly old phones, ...

Sony Xperia Beta Program brings early Marshmallow to older hardware

There are plenty of reasons you might want to be critical of Sony’s smartphone game, from the slow-to-evolve design language of its handsets, to a hard-to-predict launch schedule, to a failure to make its phones widely available in some popular markets. But the one thing it’s hard to complain about is the degree to which Sony goes out of its way to connect users with in-development software, giving them early access to new Android builds before they’re ready for mass distribution.

Android 5.1 reaches Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 family

The amount of horror stories with Android 5.0 Lollipop is significant enough to have many waiting eagerly for Android 5.1. Surely this newer version is still no Android M when it comes to benefits, but it kills a ton of bugs that reduce the glory that Lollipop deserves. Sony has had a positive track record with software updates, and the trend continues.Sony has just ...

Most exciting things of 2014

As usual, at the end of every year, we’re looking back at what happened over the course of twelve exciting months — that got us a lot of extraordinary products and services. We not only do this because it’s fun and important to recap some crucial events, but also because we usually also look at the future, trying to anticipate what the next year will bring us; and, in order to realistically try to predict things from the future, we need to know what happened in the past.So far, we looked at what we think were the

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z2 (video)

It wasn’t such a long time ago that we reviewed the Sony Xperia Z2, and yet, here we are four and a half months later, reviewing its successor, the Xperia Z3. While there’s absolutely no doubt about the fact that the Z3 is an update to the Z2 – incremental though – and an improvement over its predecessor, should you be disappointed that your current Z2 flagship is no longer the Sony flagship? Should you go out and sell your Z2 in order to grab the new kid on the block? We’ll try to answer that, ...

Sony Xperia Z3 vs Sony Xperia Z2: head-to-head in specs

When the Sony Xperia Z3 went official yesterday, many didn’t quite realize how similar it was to the Z2 – Sony’s last flagship phone, which was announced just a few months back. As it turns out, these phones are more than just a little similar, but are almost identical on paper. Some things have even become worse across the ...

Sony Xperia Z2 survives six weeks in the sea

Sony has been really pushing water resistant phones as of late, with many of its latest phones featuring flaps everywhere in order to secure the interior from water damage. But according to Sony, its flagship Z2 can only be kept “under 1.5 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP58″ — a far cry from six weeks at the bottom of the ocean. Apparently though, in a wild Xperia Z2 survival story, that’s exactly what the phone managed. It goes like this: Alexander Maxén found his phone ...
