LG Optimus G2 Appears to Be Dominating GLBenchmark

There is a new top dog over on GLBenchmark (at least for some tests), an LG handset identified as model D801. With all this talk abut the original Optimus G possibly seeing a premature end, we’re quite curious to learn about what other hardware LG might have on the horizon, so this very high-end device certainly piqued our interest. Digging a little deeper into the D801′s listing, and it appears that this phone could actually be the Optimus G’s sequel, the ...

The Facebook Phone Needs to Be Something Special

Some things never die. Like Symbian, or webOS. (Not that we want them to die, of course.) But some rumors are simply resilient, immune to resistance and debunking. Take the elusive Facebook phone, for example. The first rumor of a Facebook phone surfaced in September 2010. Mere moments later, Facebook spokesperson Jaime Schopflin told CNET that ...

Is Cross Platform App Development a Good Idea?

Smartphones without apps aren’t very “smart”. Unfortunately apps and smartphones fall victim to the classic chicken-and-the-egg conundrum: which came first? Without apps, a platform isn’t very appealing and won’t be picked by many users. Without a lot of users on a given platform app developers won’t devote much (if any) time to writing apps for said platform. Microsoft found themselves in exactly this situation when they abandoned Windows Mobile in lieu of Windows Phone — and went from a bunch of apps to none overnight. Despite Windows Phone ...

Could It Be Google Babel, Instead of Babble?

We saw some images last week purporting to show off Google’s new cross-service, cross-platform messaging system, Babble, and though suspicion has since cast some serious doubt as to their authenticity, the underlying service still seems very much real. Some new details arrive in the latest set of rumors, also suggesting that it could arrive with a slightly different name. Supposedly, what we’ve been calling Babble is referred to internally at Google as Babel – you know, as in the Tower of Babel, the origin myth ...

Carriers Already Dumping LG Optimus G?

While it lacks the bells and whistles of all the latest 1080p Androids, LG’s Optimus G is a pretty decent little Android, and would arguably be even more so if it hadn’t been overshadowed by its cousin, the Nexus 4. Still, it’s a relatively new phone, coming to AT&T and Sprint just over four month ago. That’s why it’s so surprising to hear talk already that the Optimus G could be going EOL. Now, this may be a mistake – an inadvertently selected row or something – but as you can see on the spreadsheet ...

New Date Rumored for Apple iPhone 5S Launch

As we start moving into the second quarter of 2013, you had better believe that rumors about Apple’s next iPhone, presumed to be the iPhone 5S, will be picking up steam. We’ve been hearing about the possibility that Apple will launch the phone this summer, and have already seen a few dates tossed around. Last week, June 29 was put forth as a possibility, and while that date does have some historical significance, falling on a Saturday made it seem less ...

Things Looking Up for iOS 6.1.3 Jailbreak

After taking so very long to arrive, the most recent iOS jailbreak’s time in the sun was cut short by the release of iOS 6.1.3 (at least for iOS hardware running recent chips), patching exploits used by the tool. All told, we got just under six of free-and-clear jailbreak time before having to decide between keeping our jailbreaks or updating to the latest iOS. Considering all the effort that went into producing the evasi0n jailbreak, some Apple ...

Pocketnow Throwback Review: Motorola i930 (Video)

At the halfway mark of the last decade, the Motorola i930 was a beast. It packed a 180MHz processor, 32MB of RAM, a VGA camera, and Windows Mobile 2003 into a 167g casing more than 30mm thick. It was a hard-core, ruggedized device built at a time when rugged feature phones still commanded a premium, and durable smartphones were practically unheard-of. It also packed the fastest walkie-talkie in the industry, and a carrier label that, at the time of the phone’s release in 2005, was among the most-respected brands in the United States:

Facebook Sends Out Invites, Names Android Its New Home

We all remember HTC’s 2011 efforts with the F-button on the Salsa and the ChaCha but those phones, while mid-range Android devices back in the day, were mostly disappointing in what they tried to achieve. According to recent rumors HTC and Facebook are at it again, teaming up once more, this time for a “real” Facebook phone. “Come see our new home on Android” says the press invite above and we’re pretty certain it will be more than the two aforementioned devices. The event happens next week on April 4 in California and we’re pretty excited, not ...
