At CES this year, NVIDIA held a press conference, where both the Tegra 4 and Shield were announced. The NVIDIA Shield is a Tegra 4-powered portable gaming console which runs Android. The design is practically a relatively generic looking game controller with a 5-inch 720p display that hinges open like any other clamshell device. And the rest of its internals are on par with most other high-end Android ...
The Moto X goes official in under a day, but when does that mean you’ll actually be able to get your hands on the Android? Rumors have seemed split into two camps, with the bulk looking to late August availability, but there also being talk about the phone going up for sale tomorrow, right on launch day. Today we get some new support for one of those ideas, as well as get some insight into when Verizon could be getting the HTC One and all those other new Motorola models. The latest Verizon leak ...
It’s hard to remember a time when we’ve seen a phone leaked so much, and for so long, in order to create the amount of anticipation that exists behind the Moto X. Some of us are even worried that the device will not live-up to the amount of hype that’s been created in the media over the last couple of months, and we won’t deny that some of us even believed this phone would never see the light of day. Still, the waiting days are finally over. Google’s Moto X event happens tomorrow, and in a very peculiar fashion. Our own Michael Fisher will be in New York City ...
For the past several weeks, we’ve been looking at signs here and there of Samsung developing new Galaxy S 4 hardware for release. After all, that LTE-A model for South Korea with the Snapdragon 800 made it clear that the GS4 lineup could still have a few tricks left in it, and we spotted a couple Samsung model numbers that sure felt like they could be similar models for other markets. What we lacked was much in the way of proof. There’s still a lot we ...
It’s been just over a week since we saw Verizon and Motorola launch the new Droid Ultra series, powered by an unexpected source: the new X8 from Motorola itself. Nowadays, we may not view Motorola much as a company that makes processors, but it’s always had business in integrated circuits, and don’t forget that its 68K chips were at the heart of Apple’s Macintosh computers for years (not to mention a huge number of arcade machines and video came ...
The idea of an iPad mini 2 seemed so simple: take the first iPad mini we like so much, then give it a higher-resolution Retina-quality display, and maybe bump it up to Apple’s SoC du jour. Then just a few weeks ago we got tossed a bit of a curve ball, with a new rumor claiming that a display upgrade wasn’t necessarily a key part of the mini 2 – that is, while we might get a tablet just like we were expecting, there could also be a new iPad mini that ...
We’re on the eve of the launch of a most significant (if not spec-packed) smartphone, the Moto X. We’re hot on the heels of the industry’s latest benchmark-juicing scandal with Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 tweaking. We’re only a week away from seeing what LG has to offer with its G2 (though we already know what accessories it’s launching with). And we’re not even a week out from the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020, but we’re already in full-on fretting mode about our favorite Finns. That roster would be enough to fuel two podcast episodes this size, ...
Back in June we saw Microsoft begin making some headway towards bringing Office to competing platforms, and witnessed the arrival of an iOS port of Office for the iPhone. While this was progress, we were also wondering when the same sort of package might become available for Android users. Today we get our answer, with Microsoft releasing Office Mobile for Android phones. That’s “phones,” specifically, because just like the iOS version, this one isn’t designed for tablet-sized displays. It’s also – ...
Numbers from the most recent American Customer Satisfaction Index report indicate that Samsung has Apple beat in the consumer satisfaction department, at least in the US.
When Apple showed off iOS 7 they included a new “Control Center” that looked strikingly familiar to Android users. Essentially, Apple’s version is simply the Android Notification Shade that you swipe up from the bottom — with a little transparency to make it look “different”. Turn about, as they say, is fair play, and today I’ll take you hands-on with an app called Control Center by Lone Tooth that emulates the look and feel of Apple’s version of Android’s notification shade. Control Center is available free in the Play Store and is ...
Yesterday, we head some scandalous claims made about Samsung, the Galaxy S 4, and the phone’s benchmark performance. Based on tests conducted by Anandtech, the Exynos-based GS4 appeared to be keeping its GPU running at a lower clock speed for the vast majority of apps, and would only crank things up to full-speed performance when running a benchmark app named on a hard-coded list stored on the phone. If true, that would suggest that Samsung was manipulating benchmarks in order to deliver figures not reflecting ...
