Evidence emerges of early development on future iOS 8.X builds

By this point, iOS users everywhere are familiar with the 8.0.1 mishap last week, and the release of iOS 8.0.2 Apple came through with a couple days later as a solution. But now that we’re at 8.0.2, where do we go from here? With iOS 7, we saw several months of minor bugfix releases before 7.1 came around in March, and even then we only saw a couple more bugfix builds that brought us up to 7.1.2. But to look at some of the latest ...

Sony Xperia Z3 unboxing (Video)

Sony introduced the world to its Xperia Z3 flagship back at the start of the month, at IFA 2014 in Berlin. The 5.2-inch 1080p waterproof handset packed some solid specs, including a Snapdragon 801, 3GB of RAM, and a big 20.7MP Sony camera. We had the opportunity to go hands-on with the phone back on the show floor, but that was far too brief an ...

OnePlus Two gets an ETA, may be more compact than the One

It’s still tricky to get your hands on a OnePlus One – and for the next few weeks, at least, it will continue to be, until no-invite pre-orders open in late October – but OnePlus is already looking on to what’s next for itself, talking about plans for a OnePlus Two. We heard the company make reference to its next smartphone a little earlier this month, as it recounted the lessons it learned from its failed ...

Google drives latest Android L naming speculation: Lollipop? Layer Cake?

The public release of Android L is nearly here – at least, we sure think it is – but when it comes to a name for this new version of the OS, all we have is that “L.” Ever since the arrival of Android KitKat we’ve been wondering what name the L-release would take, but confirmation’s been elusive. Long-standing rumors of Lemon Meringue Pie have recently been joined by new contenders,

Galaxy Note 4′s arrival leaves some new owners with build quality complaints

It really does not seem like the best time right now to be a smartphone manufacturer. We’re just coming off a week of news about Apple missteps, from reports of too-easy-to-bend iPhones to a phone-crippling iOS 8 update. Now it’s Samsung’s turn to take some heat, and as those early sales of the Galaxy Note 4 get underway in South Korea, new owners of the phablet are reporting some manufacturing issues of their own.So ...

You, not Government, should hold the kill switch to your smartphone

There’s a widespread push for a “kill switch” that would supposedly enable law enforcement to track and disable a stolen cell phone. There are even some States that are trying to mandate this functionality by law. I find all this curious since we’ve had the ability to remotely lock, disable, and even wipe our devices for the last few years. Why the big push to make it mandatory now?If I want to remotely wipe any of my Android powered devices, I can. Quickly, easily, securely. Apple has the same feature. So does Windows Phone. Put another way, we already have the ...

HTC One M8 Eye rumors predict 13MP Duo-Camera setup

The “Eye”-codenamed upcoming HTC device is still a mystery. Depending on who you tend to believe, it’s all about either the front-facing camera — for a brand new “selfie” phone, like we didn’t have enough of those already — or, like this most recent report claims, about the main camera. In any case, the consensus is that the “Eye” tentative moniker describes some sort of camera functionality.Today’s HTC One M8 Eye rumors try to predict several things: first off, we’re seeing the phone being “placed” in the ...

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge pre-orders live at Clove in the UK

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth concerning the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, ever since its introduction at the pre-IFA Unpacked event, where it shared the stage, and spotlight, with the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Most of the speculation was due to Samsung’s decision of not giving out too many details, and so reports surfaced regarding availability, stock/shortages, as well as

Who is to blame for #bendgate?

Boy you people. You just can’t be satisfied. You want to hold your phone and not have the signal die. You want to navigate from your Malibu home to the nearest Starbucks and not get routed to Cleveland. You want to sit on your phones and have them not bend. There really is no pleasing you. I swear. If you haven’t been paying attention lately, iPhone 6 Plusses are a bit on the bendy side according to some forums and YouTube personality, Unboxed Therapy. It turns out putting the new gigantic phones in your pockets – front or back – and then sitting down is a really bad idea and can ...

Apple iPhone 6 Not Easily Bent, Claims Consumer Reports

A handful of reports accusing the newly-released Apple iPhone 6 of being easily bent quickly blew up onto a controversy that’s being called “Bendgate.” To add some scientific data to the debate, Consumer Reports compared the rigidity of this new smartphone to other flagships and found little evidence to back up the claims.

Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus slantedThe product-testing service examined the rigidity of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, LG G3, Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and HTC One (M8), as well as the iPhone 5. It used a “three-point flexural test,” in which the device is supported at two points on either end and an opposite force is applied in the middle. This third force was applied with an Instron compression test machine.

In the tests, the iPhone 6 tied with the HTC One (M8): Both were able to survive increasing amounts of force until they bent at 70 lbs. The iPhone 6 Plus didn’t bend until it reached 90 lbs of pressure.

Consumer Reports found that the LG G3 and iPhone 5 bent at 130 lbs. The most inflexible device in its tests was the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which survived until 150 lbs of force had been applied.

“While nothing is (evidently) indestructible, we expect that any of these phones should stand up to typical use,” Consumer Reports concluded.

Apple iPhone 6 review: excellence exemplified

The year is 2014. It’s been seven years since the Keynote announcement that put Apple on the mobile map – and put its competition on notice. Six years since Google launched its own smartphone platform, which it quickly converted from a BlackBerry clone to something much more … familiar. Four years since Microsoft revamped its archaic (but powerful) mobile software into something less archaic (and also less powerful). Three years since Palm imploded trying to push a mobile platform the world ...

iPhone gets the bends, Surface Mini gets teased, and fanboys get a forum | Pocketnow Weekly 115

Hating the iPhone is the new hating the Super Bowl champions. And if that’s not a thing that people do, well, sorry: I don’t get sports.Point is, Apple’s new flagship just set a bevy of sales records –again– and seems poised to carry Apple through another successful year – again, again. So why do people hate the iPhone so much? We’ll touch on that before launching into the far more important discussion of just how these phones actually work in the real world, from our own experiences to the unfortunate souls who got “the bends.” All that in the ...

A week with the iPhone 6 Plus

Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus arrived in our review labs one week ago today. Unlike most review phones, this one is a personal device – my personal phone.I picked up the 6 Plus to replace the iPhone 5 I bought two years ago which, in the last six months, has found itself in my pocket more than my hand. It’s entirely too small for me to use with any sort of comfort. My thumbs are too big for its narrow screen. No less, I’ve had the ...

One more new Motorola Shamu Nexus pic turns up

This week is proving to be a bit of a gold mine when it comes to us getting an idea of what the Motorola “Shamu” phone we’ve been talking about for a while – the model expected to be the next Google Nexus phone – will look like when it finally arrives. We quickly moved from a render to an actual photograph, though that pic was only of the phone’s rear. Today we add a new image to that collection, and this ...
