Apple and VR, is there another defining product in the tech beast?

We think of Apple like this. It is not the innovative company some would have you believe, instead Apple enters an existing but nascent market and makes defining products within it. That's pretty admirable in itself, think how the iPod, iPhone, and iPad impacted their respective markets and you get the picture. Apple is now looking to do the same with virtual reality.

Sony Xperia C6 Render

We liked last year's Sony Xperia C5 Ultra, it was a solid mid-range device with a huge 6-inch screen, a slick near bezel-less design, and a good camera configuration. Inevitably there is going to be a 2016 refresh of the handset, the Xperia C6, and the first render of the smartphone has apparently leaked.

BlackBerry Exec: “Only Android as a Platform”

We don't need much proof that BlackBerry is starting to throw its lot in with Android, after-all the company released the Priv flagship smartphone rocking Google's mobile platform late last year. It is becoming increasingly likely that the Canadian company will stop making hardware for its own BB10 operating system, and now a BlackBerry exec has pointed once more to the company adopting Android full time.

Huawei Watch – After The Buzz

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many ...

2 gadgets, 1 number: hands-on with AT&T NumberSync

You know what’s cool? Having a bunch of connected gadgets. You know what sucks? Having a unique phone number for each and every one. Thanks to the proliferation of instant messaging and VOIP calling services, being tied to a mobile phone number has become less of an issue in recent years – but there are still those who prefer the old-fashioned voice call, and the venerable SMS is still a solid standby when you’ve got friends who chafe at the intrusiveness of Facebook Messenger or Google Hangouts. For them, the idea of maintaining separate phone numbers for a 4G tablet, ...

How much data do you store locally?

Mobile devices are funny things. On the one hand, they’re basically computers, capable of large and complex computations in the blink of an eye. On the other hand, they’re very ephemeral in a way – not really designed to last beyond two years. This creates an interest phenomenon in the mobile space. After all, if a phone isn’t designed to last more than a couple of years, then how can it be considered reliable for local data storage? But on the other hand, computers are where we keep our stuff, so how do we come to grips with this dichotomy.PC packratI am what I like to call a ...

How anti-encryption laws put everyone at risk

California and New York are working on bills that would prohibit (or severely restrict) encryption on phones. Why is encryption so important, and why are encryption laws that prohibit your ability to secure your devices and data such a bad idea?Back before these United States of America were recognized as a country, we were colonies of Great Britain. Pilgrims to the Americas were typically fleeing governmental or religious oppression, seeking a new start is a far-off land, free from the shackles and scrutiny of over-reaching governments and tyrants. That was a long time ago, and what does ...

Moto 360 Sport Review – Pocketnow Fitness

You’d be shocked at the amount of requests we get every day of people asking us to recommend a good wearable for fitness. Surely this is the era of smartwatches and fitness trackers, but not all of these products are good enough to address the needs of people who take fitness seriously. As a result, just like we review smartphones and smartwatches, we decided to create a separate segment that only focuses on the fitness capabilities of wearables. This is Pocketnow Fitness.—Even though Android Wear is still far from the popularity of products like FitBit, we get constant questions ...

LG G3 had a security flaw patched in its Smart Notice widget

It gives wibbly weather reports even those at the Met Office in London would tsk at. And it bothers users every so often with battery consumption notices, just like many a Chinese Android phone.
