Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes with a larger screen, swim-proof design, same killer price

HTC Desire 12 and 12 Plus launch with ‘new-retro’ features at a lower cost

Update: The HTC Desire 12 Plus is now available in the UK for £199 (around $265 / AU$350) in Cool Black and Warm Silver. Original story and full details below.

HTC has unveiled the Desire 12 and 12 Plus, two phones that bring the new, longer 18:9 screen format at a lower cost.

The Desire 12 has a 5.5-inch screen with less bezel around the side, and offers a single 13MP sensor on the rear of the phone, with an f/2.2 aperture sensor.

It's got 2GB of RAM with 16GB of onboard storage, or 3GB if you go for the 32GB capacity, and both variants are capable of handling up to 2TB micro SD cards.

Inside is a MediaTek quad-core CPU, which hints at a lower cost for the phone, as does the fact the HTC Desire 12 screen is only a 5.5-inch HD panel.

That means a resolution of 720 x 1440, and it's a long way from the QHD of the top-end Samsung Galaxy S9, for instance.

The HTC Desire 12

The HTC Desire 12 Plus pumps things up a little, and will clearly be the more expensive of the two, although has the same lower resolution, and still doesn't cost much at £199 (around $265 / AU$350).

The main change is to the camera on the rear of the phone, with the 13MP sensor joined by a 2MP option, designed to give some background blur bokeh effects.

It's a hint to the past here, where HTC was one of the first brands out there to bring dual sensors to the market, with the HTC One M8 offering the same depth perception.

The retro twist doesn't stop there on these phones, as both will have a similar acrylic glass rear to the HTC U11, although stop short of using the same Liquid Glass technique that made those phones look so stunning.

The HTC Desire 12+ is also running a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 CPU under the hood, with slightly more grunt being fed into the handset. Whether that's the reason the Desire 12 Plus is running Android Oreo and the smaller Desire 12 an unknown version of Android remains to be seen, though.

We don't yet know what the HTC Desire 12 will cost, but in the UK at least the HTC Desire 12 Plus is now available for £199 (around $265 / AU$350) in Cool Black and Warm Silver shades.

That's a lower price than we expected and the standard HTC Desire 12 will presumably be cheaper still.

When you'll be able to get your hands on that phone (or on the 12 Plus if you're outside the UK) is still anyone's guess, with pricing and regional availability still to be confirmed, but we'd expect a wider roll out for the Desire 12 Plus and a launch for the HTC Desire 12 to start soon.

Google Pixel 3 XL could have a notch and two front-facing cameras

Until today we didn’t know much about the Pixel 3 range, but if new rumors are accurate there’s now a whole lot that we know, especially about the Pixel 3 XL, which will apparently have a notch and two front-facing cameras.

That’s according to ‘people familiar with the matter’ speaking to Bloomberg, who added that the phone will also have a bezel at the bottom of the screen.

They say that the notch won’t be as wide as it is on the iPhone X, but that it will be taller, and Google apparently aims to completely remove the bezels from a future Pixel phone but is keeping them this year to allow for front-facing stereo speakers.

The standard Pixel 3 meanwhile apparently won’t have a notch, instead sporting a similar design to the Pixel 2, and will only have a single front-facing camera, but both phones are said to have an upgraded single-lens rear camera. These claims match up with leaked screen protector images we saw a few days ago.

The report adds that the Pixel 3 range might be built by Foxconn for the first time (that being the main company that manufactures iPhones among many other products) and that – unsurprisingly – the engineering talent that Google acquired from HTC earlier this year will be heavily involved in developing the new devices.

Additional evidence and OLED screens

But this isn’t the only source of Pixel 3 news, as leaker I Ice universe has also posted on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site), claiming that LG Display will be supplying OLED panels with notches to Google smartphones.

That both backs up the theory that at least one Pixel 3 model will have a notch and tells us that they might well use OLED screens.

That latter point is unsurprising, since the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL both use OLED, but it’s worth noting, since OLED can deliver better contrast than LCD.

Of course, none of this is confirmed just yet and we likely won’t know the truth until the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are announced, probably in October.

Samsung Galaxy S10 may be ready to include an in-display fingerprint scanner

Leaks have suggested Samsung has been developing an in-display fingerprint sensor over the last few years, and a new report says it will be ready for next year's Galaxy S10.

Vivo and Huawei both have products on the market that include in-display fingerprint sensors, and ETNews is reporting that Samsung may feel pressured to join them.

Citing industry sources, the site claims the company will be ready to include the technology on the Samsung Galaxy S10 despite being nervous of including the tech in the past.

The report also suggests Samsung Display is making the Super AMOLED display element while Qualcomm will include an ultrasonic solution to allow for the scanner inside.

That's different to have Vivo achieves it with an optical solution.

Coming next year

It seems the scanner won't be ready for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which is expected to launch in either August or September this year.

In-display fingerprint sensor technology has been a long time coming as it needs to be both accurate and speedy, which is something both Huawei and Vivo have seemed to think is now possible as they've included it on consumer-ready phones.

Huawei's Porsche Design Mate RS included an in-display fingerprint sensor, but it also included a normal scanner as well to ensure you've got a secure way of unlocking your phone.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S10, we expect to hear about it in the first quarter of 2018 with a late February or early March launch, considering that will be a year after the Samsung Galaxy S9's release.
