Amazfit T-Rex Pro quick review: Rugged elegance

Amazfit T-Rex was our Editor’s recommendation for the best rugged smartwatch at a budget. The brand is now one-upping its offering with the launch of the Amazfit T-Rex Pro. It is more rugged than ever, adds a biometric sensor to detect atmospheric pressure, gets a 3-axis gyroscope sensor and offers more positioning options and over a 100 sports modes. But do these additions deserve the $30 price hike? Let’s take a look at the new Amazfit T-Rex Pro’s capabilities in our quick review.

As rugged as ever

The new rugged wearable is built out of polycarbonate, which is strong enough to withstand hammer blows (yes, I tested that – just don’t put the hammer to the screen). It is rugged all around but that doesn’t translate to bulk. The smartwatch weighs just below 60 grams (straps included). It is really lightweight for the kind of design it offers.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro on wrist

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro is one of the most affordable Military Certified rugged smartwatches. It can withstand extreme temperature and conditions from 70-degree Celsius to -40-degree Celsius. I tested these numbers as far as I could by putting it in the freezer, and it still worked after 20 minutes. Obviously, I couldn’t test out the extremes. Further, the 5ATM rating has been bumped up to 10 ATM, which means it can withstand splashes, rain or snow to a depth of 100 meters.

The outer of the smartwatch is similar to its predecessor. You get Up and Down buttons on the left edge, and Select and Back buttons on the right. These are meant to help you with UI navigation, but I found myself using the touchscreen more often.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro buttons

The buttons are likely to come into play if you are showering or swimming because water droplets on the screen cause hindrance in navigation. On the back of the device, you’ll find the Bio-Tracking Optical sensor. Coming to the straps, these are silicone bands, and are still the same – comfortable to wear 24 hours a day.

Display remains the same

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro comes equipped with a 1.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. It lies under the protection of 3D Corning Gorilla glass, which also has an anti-fingerprint coating over it. Essentially, it is the same screen as the predecessor. It is easily visible under direct sunlight.

The responsiveness can be improved

However, it does take 1-2 seconds to turn on the screen on wrist-to-wake, which is more than what I experienced on the original T-Rex. You also get an always-on display (AOD), which is also bright enough to see the time at a glance without the whole display lighting up. Plus, like before, there are two options for AOD – digital or analog. These presets cannot be changed to your liking. That said, you get important stuff like time, day and date on AOD.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro modes

Amazfit has bumped up the sports modes from 13 to 100+. You get a slew of modes under the following major modes: Running & Walking, Cycling, Swimming, Outdoor Sports, Indoor Sports, Dance, Combat Sports, Ball Sports, Water Sports, Winter Sports, Leisure Sports, and Others. I was able to test walking, outdoor running, and badminton but I’ll test more in our Amazfit T-Rex Pro full review.

You can swipe right and go to Workouts to start tracking. While testing, it took a while to acquire a GPS signal. In running, it shows current and average pace, distance, duration, and heart rate. And with walking, I can conclude that the wearable doesn’t register fake steps. Plus, during exercise, it shows the usual duration, calorie consumption, and heart rate.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro heart rate

Aside from that, you can set a 1-minute interval while measuring heart rate 24×7. However, it consumes a lot of battery. While I didn’t achieve the quoted 9 days on heavy usage, the T-Rex Pro lasted me 7 days with AOD off and heart rate interval set to 1 minute. You can get extra juice if you set the heart rate interval to up to 30 minutes.

Sleep tracking is better than before

Further, sleep tracking has been improved. It is pretty accurate. However, I cannot say how accurate are the REM, Deep Sleep, and Light Sleep numbers – there is no way to tell that. Plus, it can measure naps that are 20 minutes or longer.

While the UI is simple to use and pretty straight-forward, the response time or latency can be reduced. As I said before, it takes a second or two for the watch to light up when I raise my wrist. That being said, I didn’t encounter any stutters while navigating through the watch. The watch also allows you to control your music. You can  skip a track, go to the previous track, and adjust the volume.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro watch face

The notifications still remain non-actionable, meaning that you get informed of what’s happening but you can’t take action on it. For instance, if you get a message from your friend, the watch will display the message but you’ll not be able to do anything with it. You’ll have to pick your phone to reply to the message. This is more of a limitation of RTOS, which is what the watch is based on. The companion app and its functionalities remain the same. You can read about it in our T-Rex review here.

To conclude, the Amazfit T-Rex Pro is an awesome rugged fitness wearable. However, it could get smarter with actionable notifications to make it a full-fledged smartwatch. We’ll take a deeper dive in more sports modes in our Amazfit T-Rex Pro full / long term review. As for what’s on offer for USD 180 / INR 12,999, it is a compelling package. You can go for it if you are into outdoor sports, and like to stay connected while you are on the mountains hiking or swimming by a beach.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro could be more durable than ever; specs leaked

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Amazfit T-Rex was first showcased at CES 2020, and was later launched for the consumers. We reviewed the rugged smartwatch and it was our Best Choice recommendation for an affordable rugged smartwatch. Now, it seems like Amazfit is looking to top it with a Pro variant. The Amazfit T-Rex Pro leak gives us a look at its specifications and design. It hints that the launch is just around the corner.

According to a report from 91Mobiles, Amazfit is prepping to launch a T-Rex Pro. The report posted some images and goes on to say that the device will tout the same design and form factor as its predecessor, but it will be more durable than ever. It might be 10ATM certified and could survive underwater for up to 100 meters instead of 50 meters with a 5ATM rating.

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro leak reveals that it could feature a 1.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with 360x360p resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass, which is tipped to have a tempered layer and anti-fingerprint coating on top. Connectivity options might include built-in GPS+GLONASS, GPS+BeiDuo, and GPS+Galileo navigation system. It could have BioTracker 2 PPG optical sensor for heart-rate tracking, a 3-axis acceleration sensor, a 3-axis gyroscope sensor, a geomagnetic sensor, an ambient light sensor, and a barometric altimeter.

Amazfit GTS 2e review: Perfectly capable fitness tracker at a budget

The Amazfit GTS 2e is a new smartwatch in the GTS lineup from Amazfit. Essentially, it is an Amazfit GTS 2, with minor changes. Most of the features are similar to the GTS 2 but how does it compare with the older sibling? Is it worth spending more for the Amazfit GTS 2? Or is it a viable option to settle with the new GTS 2e? Let’s find out in our Amazfit GTS 2e review.

Design

Like its older sibling, the Amazfit GTS 2e  is very comfortable to wear. It sports a 2.5D curved surface as compared to the 3D curved surface found on the GTS 2. While looking at it, you won’t notice much of a difference between the two. Apart from this, the smart wearable shares a lot of similarities with the Amazfit GTS 2. It measures the same at  42.8 x 35.6 x 9.7mm, and weighs 25 grams without the straps.

Amazfit GTS 2e back

The Amazfit GTS 2e comes in three color options of Obsidian Black (the one featured in this review), Moss Green and Lilac Purple. It features an aluminum alloy body with a plastic matte bottom case, which is different from the plastic high-gloss mirror bottom case found on the GTS 2. That being said, it looks equally classy and elegant, in my opinion. The device is also rated 5ATM (50 meters) for water-resistant abilities. It is the same as the GTS 2. It comes with a silicone strap of 20mm width, which is very comfortable to wear.

Classy, Elegant and Lightweight

When you look at the top, the display on the Amazfit GTS 2eis exactly the same as the GTS 2. It comes equipped with a tempered glass and anti-fingerprint vacuum coating but lacks oDLC coating. The latter is found on the GTS 2. Theoretically, the optical Diamond-like Carbon (oDLC) coating makes the display resistant to scratches, and allows it to be cleaned easily. Despite the lack of the oDLC coating, I didn’t manage to scratch the smartwatch. However, I did manage to get more smudges on it than the GTS 2.

Display

Amazfit GTS 2e review display

The Amazfit GTS 2e features a 1.65-inch display that comes with a 348 x 442 pixel resolution and 341 PPI. It is impressive to look at, and I had no problems viewing it under direct sunlight. It is bright, colorful, and it is easily visible both in indoor and outdoor conditions. The ambient light sensor does well to adjust the brightness accordingly.

Bright, colorful, and easy to view

Coming to the usability, it is simple. You flick the wrist to turn on the display, for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds and more. It can be adjusted from the Zepp app. If the turn-wrist-to-wake feature is turned off, you can tap on the display or push the top crown to turn on the display.  The Amazfit GTS 2e also comes with AOD (Always-On Display). It is bright, but does affect the battery life significantly.

Features and the Smarts

The device comes with Amazfit’s self-developed “BioTracker 2” PPG sensor, which is used to measure the heart rate and SpO2. Other sensors onboard include an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, and a barometric sensor. Further, there’s a temperature sensor, which isn’t found on the GTS.

Amazfit GTS 2e activity

The device comes with Amazfit’s self-developed “BioTracker 2” PPG sensor, which is used to measure the heart rate and SpO2. Other sensors onboard include an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, and a barometric sensor. Further, there’s a temperature sensor, which isn’t found on the GTS.

However, unlike the GTS 2, the Amazfit GTS 2e doesn’t allow you to store music locally.  Moreover, it lacks WLAN 2.4GHz, but connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.0. I had no connectivity issues, and the device was constantly connected to my smartphone.

You get voice controls, which are easy to set up and enable. These come in handy when you are wearing gloves or cannot use the touchscreen to navigate. In my usage, the device understood the commands only if you are in a quiet environment.

It could be smarter

The Amazfit GTS 2e comes with a handful of native apps and you can’t download morem and the notifications aren’t actionable either. It lacks a speaker – which is found on the GTS 2 – so you cannot answer calls on the wearable. However, I wouldn’t count it as a con as I wouldn’t recommend you to pick a call on the GTS 2 since the speaker is tiny.

Amazfit GTS 2e notifications

That said, the GTS 2e notifies you of the calls, messages, as well as notifications from apps. The individual-app notifications can be enabled from the Zepp app. Each notification is displayed as a card, which is non-actionable but can be expanded. Plus, you cannot clear single notifications but can remove them all at once.

Amazfit GTS 2e review: Fitness tracking

The Amazfit GTS 2e comes with 90 sports modes out of which smart recognition can recognize six of them, namely, Outdoor Running, Treadmill, Walking, Outdoor Cycling, Pool Swimming, and Elliptical. It also has features like Stress management that detects any unusual cardiac activity without any movement. You get rated between 0 and 100, where 0-39 for relaxed, 40-59 for normal, 60-79 for medium, and 80-100 for high stress.

Plenty of fitness features on offer

When out for a run, the watch face goes dark till you raise your wrist. You can press a button to view your running data: distance, pace, elapsed time, and heart rate as well as the current time and battery life. As for steps count, it doesn’t register fake steps and is a perfectly reliable smart accessory to your smartphone. However, it is not the most accurate out there, but is perfectly good for the price.

You also get Personal Activity Intelligence or PAI, which combines data from all the different sensors and gives you a score based on your daily activity. The score is calculated differently based on the user’s age, resting heart rate, gender, etc. It is personalized for each user.

GTS 2e GPS review

There is sleep tracking, which is fairly accurate. The device tracks REM sleep alongside the portions of light and deep sleep at night. It can also track your naps. The Zepp app also gives you suggestions to improve your sleep quality. It compares your sleeping and waking times and your light, deep, or REM sleep values with ideal values. By doing this, it gives you a score out of 100, with 100 being the best.

You don’t get some features like tracking for menstrual cycles and guided breathing. Further, the SpO2 tracking feature and thermometer function aren’t the most reliable.

The Zepp app

Setting up your Amazfit GTS 2e is pretty straightforward, and I had no troubles with the process. You need to download the Zepp app (available for Android and iOS) and create an account (if you don’t already have one).

It asks for basic information like gender, height, weight, and date of birth alongside your target calories and target sleep. It is relatively simple to add a device too. The app asks you to pick the model you want to pair. Then, a QR code pops up on the watch, which you need to scan and press Confirm.

The Zepp app shows all the data collected from your device. You can click into each section and see everything in more detail. Plus, you get to download a plethora of watch faces. There are three tabs at the bottom: Homepage, Enjoy, Profile. The app’s Homepage is quite busy. It shows you all your tracked data like the number of steps, calories burnt, hours of sleep taken, heart rate, sleep score, PAI, and more. Under the Enjoy tab, you get utilities like alarm clock, event reminder, find device, target setting, dial setting, etc.

It is a capable app and helps you make sense of the data gathered by your watch

Battery

Amazfit GTS 2e review

The 246mAh battery on the Amazfit GTS 2e is rated to last 14 days under typical usage with  regular fitness tracking and constant connection with the phone. With typical usage, and AOD turned on, it lasted me 10 days. You can extend the battery life if you aren’t connected to the phone, but that defies the purpose of a smartwatch, no? In my opinion, it offers an excellent battery life. It can be charged from zero to full within two hours.

Amazfit GTS 2e review: Verdict

At $140 or INR 9,999, the Amazfit GTS 2e is a perfectly capable smartwatch at a budget. It is comfortable to wear, classy to look at, offers a wide range of features, and lasts more than a week easily. We have no problems recommending it as a companion to your smartphone. If you are hunting for a smart wearable with a round dial, you can look at the Amazfit GTR 2e.

Amazfit GTR 2 review: Activate and Captivate

Amazfit GTR 2 is a very-well deserved successor to the original GTR. It features a sleeker design, a better UI, and a slew of features. All of this is packed in a lightweight body, which allows you to wear it for features like sleep tracking. While it is gorgeous to look at, the functionality doesn’t take a hit either. Here’s our Amazfit GTR 2 review to help you decide if you should buy this wearable.

Design: A beauty to look at

The Amazfit GTR 2 takes its design cues from the predecessor. It features a circular dial with two crown buttons residing on the right side. The upper one, which is used to open the menu, has a red accent to it. Overall, the smartwatch looks higher-end than its USD 179 price tag.

As soon as it activates, it captivates.

The Amazfit GTR 2 sports a beautiful design made out of glass and aluminum. It comes equipped with curved bezels that help the display blend with the body. There is a bezel integrated within the display. This comes in handy when you use a watch face with a dark background as it makes the screen look bigger. That said, the bezel isn’t functional like the more expensive Samsung counterpart.

                    Amazfit GTR 2 display

We received the aluminum variant (Sports Edition) but there is also an option for stainless steel (Classic Edition), which costs about $10 more. The former sports a silicone strap, while the latter comes with a silicone-reinforced leather strap. These are the standard 22mm straps.

I wore it 24x7 for 4 days straight

The Sports Edition, which we have here weighs just 31 grams, and it is one of the lightest smartwatches I’ve used in the recent past. You can wear it 24×7 without feeling fatigue on the wrist. Generally, if I’m not testing, I wear a smartwatch only when I workout or go out. But the Amazfit GTR 2 can be worn all-day, everyday.

The device doesn’t have an IP rating. However, you get water resistance till up to 5ATM or 50 meters (~164 feet) in freshwater. To break it down, you can’t go swimming in a saltwater body wearing this but you can wear it in the shower or a freshwater pool.

Display: Bright and a delight to use

                    Amazfit GTR 2 review design

The Amazfit GTR 2 features a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a 454 x 454-pixel resolution, which is the same as the previous generation. It is an impressive display. It is bright, the colors are saturated, and it is easily visible both in indoor and outdoor conditions. I had no problems viewing it under direct sunlight. The ambient light sensor does well to adjust the brightness accordingly.

It is housed within a fingerprint-resistant coating at the top. Plus, there is oDLC (optical Diamond-Like Carbon) coating for protection. The watch fell down while I was trying to put it on and it survived the drop comfortably. In my three weeks of usage, I haven’t managed to scratch it either.

The usability is quite simple. You can flick the wrist to turn on the display, for 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds and more. The duration can be adjusted from the Zepp app. You can also tap on the display or push the top crown to turn on the display.

The Amazfit GTR 2 also comes with AOD (Always-On Display), which is surprisingly bright in indoor conditions. It can display information such as date & time, steps, and more. Remember, if you turn on the AOD feature, your watch will take a significant hit on the battery life.

Functionality: The smarts are here but…

The Amazfit GTR 2 comes with 3GB of internal storage, which can be used for storing music locally. Amazfit doesn’t mention the details about its processor or RAM. Further, the device supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The latter is used for smaller file transfers including new watch faces.

The device sports the company’s self-developed “BioTracker 2” PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor, which is used to measure the heart rate and SpO2. Other sensors onboard include an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, and a barometric sensor. The watch also comes with inbuilt GPS and GLONASS support.

                    It could be smarter…

The Amazfit GTR 2 has limited smartwatch capabilities. It comes with a handful of native apps and you can’t download more. It is one of those smartwatches that comes with non-actionable notifications. However, you can answer phone calls (via Bluetooth connection).

The individual-app notifications can be enabled from the Zepp app, but the wearable doesn’t display emojis from chat apps. Each notification is displayed as a card, which is non-actionable but can be expanded. Plus, you cannot clear single notifications but can remove them all at once.

You can scroll down to access toggles such as Display Brightness, DND, Flashlight, Screen lock, Volume controls, Battery saver mode, Find phone, Awake mode and Theatre mode. The last one keeps the display brightness at the minimum and silences notifications.

                    Amazfit GTR 2 fitness

There is support for voice controls, which are easy to set up and enable. These come in handy when you are wearing gloves or cannot use the touchscreen to navigate. I noticed that the device understands your commands only if you are in a quiet environment. It also supports Alexa but the functionality hasn’t been rolled out yet.

The inbuilt speaker can be used to play music. Plus, it can be played on any audio device connected to the watch directly using Bluetooth. The feature can work without relying on your smartphone. However, I won’t rely on the inbuilt speakers for calls or music playback. The sound is muffled and it is tiny, and understandably so.

Amazfit GTR 2 review: It is a good fitness tracker

The Amazfit GTR 2 comes with 12 different indoor and outdoor activities: running and trail running, treadmill, walking, pool and open water swimming, trekking, elliptical trainer, indoor or outdoor cycling, and free training or skiing. It also gets new features like Stress management that detects any unusual cardiac activity without any movement. You get rated between 0 and 100, where 0-39 for relaxed, 40-59 for normal, 60-79 for medium, and 80-100 for high stress.

When you go for a run, the watch face goes dark till you raise your wrist. Further, you can press a button to view your running data: distance, pace, elapsed time, and heart rate as well as the current time and battery life. It doesn’t register fake steps and is a perfectly reliable smart accessory to your smartphone.

                    Amazfit GTR 2 review

There is Personal Activity Intelligence or PAI, which combines data from all the different sensors and gives you a score based on your daily activity. The score is calculated differently based on the user’s age, resting heart rate, gender, etc. It is personalized for each user.

You also get sleep tracking, which is fairly accurate.

However, it misses out on some features like tracking for menstrual cycles and guided breathing. That said, these features can be added with an update.

                    Battery life: Solid as ever

Amazfit GTR 2 design and battery

The Amazfit GTR 2 is rated to last up to 14 days on a single charge with typical use, 38 days on minimal use and 48 hours in GPS mode. I used 24/7 heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, stress-monitoring, GPS for outdoor positioning, as well as AOD. It lasted for about five days.

                    The battery backup is amazing

The battery life is truly astounding. It will last you an entire week easily if you turn off AOD. It comes with a charging cradle in the box, which draws power from USB. This aligns with pogo pin connectors that help charge the device. It can take up to 2.5 hours to go from 0 to 100%

                    Amazfit GTR 2 review: Conclusion

                    Amazfit GTR 2 review conclusion

The Amazfit GTR 2 is an easy recommendation for $179 or INR 12,999 if you are in the market for a fitness wearable that looks like a smartwatch. It sports a gorgeous design, and comes with a range of features, packed in a lightweight body. All of this while offering a solid battery life. Some might argue that it is not the perfect smartwatch since there is no third-party support and you can’t reply to notifications. But for the price, it is a solid device.

[Update: Launched] Amazfit GTR 2e, GTS 2e set to go global at CES 2021

Update: Amazfit has launched both the GTS 2e and GTR 2e at CES 2021. The GTS 2e comes in Lilac Purple, Moss Green, and Obsidian Black while the GTR 2e can be purchased in Obsidian Black, Matcha Green, and Slate Grey. Both watches have the same $139.99 price tag. These can be purchased on the Amazfit US store starting today. Amazfit will launch these in India next week.

Amazfit expanded its GT smartwatch lineup with the launch of GTS 2e and GTR 2e in China last month. The two wearables are more affordable variants of the Amazfit GTS 2 and GTR 2 respectively. Now, it seems like the company is all set to introduce them to the global market. A tweet from the official Amazfit Twitter accounts hints that the Amazfit GTS 2 and GTR 2 family will be announced on Monday, January 11 at the Day 1 of CES 2021.

The presence of the Amazfit GTS 2e and GTR 2e is based on another series of teaser tweets:

The two smartwatches share the design language with the vanilla models, but sport a better battery life. The Amazfit GTS 2e features a 1.65-inch Super Retina AMOLED display with 2.5D glass. It comes with support for up to 90 sports modes. Plus, it can measure heart rate, and supports SpO2 measurement, and temperature measurement. It doesn’t have built-in storage like the Amazfit GTS 2 and misses out on the speaker too. Plus, it is likely to have the Alexa personal assistant in the global variant. The smartwatch is sold for ¥799 (~$123) in China. Hence, we can expect it to be priced below $150.

As for the Amazfit GTR 2e, it features a 1.39-inch round AMOLED display and packs a temperature sensor, SpO2 sensor, heart rate measurement, and sleep tracking. Like the GTS sibling, it doesn’t have built-in storage like the standard Amazfit GTR 2 and also misses out on a speaker. It is rated to last 10 more days than the GTR 2. It can go up to 45 days in basic watch mode. It was launched in China for the same amount as the GTS 2e. Hence, we expect it to be an affordable wearable too. However, there is no word on pricing and availability yet.

Amazfit GTS 2 Mini delayed shipments will include a free strap in India

Amazfit GTS 2 Mini was launched in India last week, and it went on sale soon after. However, it looks like the buyers will have to wait to get their hands on the watch. Amazfit India took to Twitter to announce that there will be a delay in delivery. It is facing some logistics issues in delivering the products. The company said it is making up for the delay by including a free watch strap with orders placed till this Friday, that is, January 1.

The Amazfit GTS 2 Mini joins the GTR 2 and GTS 2 in the GT 2 lineup of the company. It is a scaled-down version of the GTS 2, which is priced at INR 12,999. The GTS 2 Mini is available in three color options of Sage Green, Pink, and Black. It features a smaller 1.55-inch AMOLED display with 354 x 306 resolution as compared to the 1.65-inch on the GTS 2. There is an aluminum alloy case. The rest of the body is made up of plastic material with a 2.5D curved glass on top, which offers an Always on Display feature.

The Amazfit GTS 2 Mini is compatible with both Android and iOS. It features BioTracker 2 PPG optical sensor, which delivers continuous heart rate monitoring as well as heart rate during exercise. Plus, there’s a SpO2 sensor, and it can also has features like female cycle tracking, sleep tracking, stress tracking with breathing exercise guidance. It comes with an Acceleration sensor, Gyroscope, Geomagnetic, and ambient light sensor. There are 70 in-built sports modes. The watch can show sports notifications and regular notifications as well. It is said to last up to 14 days on a single charge with typical use.

Amazfit GTS 2 mini hands-on preview: minimal and efficient

Amazfit GTS 2 mini debuted last week as a scaled-down version of the Amazfit GTS 2, which was also launched recently. The new smartwatch packs a slew of features for a wearable priced at INR 6,999. However, it is not just the size that’s different from the GTS 2. The Amazfit GTS 2 mini is a minimalistic wearable that’s so lightweight you’d barely notice it on your wrist even if you sleep while wearing it. I wore it almost 24×7 for a few days and here’s an Amazfit GTS 2 mini hands-on preview.

                      Classy design

Amazfit GTS 2 mini on hand

The Amazfit GTS 2 mini sports a rectangular dial that doesn’t set it apart from the various wearables available out there. It has rounded corners with a metallic frame with chamfered edges and a single button on the right edge, which is also a fake crown. On the top lies an OLED display that is seamlessly integrated with the black bezels surrounding it. It is curved at the edges, which screams a premium build but the watch is made out of plastic. The wearable looks classy from the top. Turn it over, and you’ll get a glossy plastic back, which feels cheap. But you are going to be looking at the watch from the front most of the time so I’ll settle with the word ‘classy’ for defining the overall looks of the smartwatch.

                      That weight!

We received the Saga Green colorway, and I loved it as it stood out in my collection of mostly Black wearables. It looks fashionable and stylish. The silicone straps aren’t bright or flashy, but subtly sea-green in color, which goes along very well with the silver edges of the watch. It is also available in Pink Flamingo and Black color options. At 19.5 grams, it is so lightweight that you’d forget about it lying on your wrist even for extended periods of time.

                      Gorgeous display

Amazfit GTS 2 mini display preview

The Amazfit GTS 2 mini features a smaller 1.55-inch AMOLED display with 354 x 306 resolution as compared to the 1.65-inch on the GTS 2. It has over 30 Always-on display patterns and over 50 watch faces. It supports a peak brightness of 450 nits.

All these numbers translate to very good legibility even in direct sunlight. The AMOLED display has its perks. For instance, the battery life doesn’t take a significant hit even with the use of Always-on Display (AOD). Speaking of AOD, it is easily visible without lighting up the entire watch face in indoor conditions. However, when outdoors, you might like to raise your wrist and turn on the display to view it to your liking.

                      Always on Display

The display quality of the Amazfit GTS 2 mini is like its elder sibling, excellent. However, it feels like the software isn’t built for its size. Several parts of notifications get cut, and you are unable to view all the contents.

                      A slew of features

The Amazfit GTS 2 mini hands-on preview would be incomplete without the mention of the range of features. It runs Amazfit’s custom UI and isn’t a WearOS smartwatch. Hence, you cannot reply to notifications nor do you have third-party apps support. That said, I didn’t feel the urge to install any apps as I wasn’t missing out on anything.

                      GTS 2

Although, the Amazfit UI is slightly slow to trigger on the display when you raise your wrist. The raise to wake feature worked 9 out of 10 times. In day-to-day use, the UI is responsive, and I didn’t experience any major stutters or lags.

The budget wearable sports a PPG optical sensor for heart-rate monitoring. While it isn’t continuous, you can set the interval of your HR measurements to as low as 1 minute via the app. The lower the interval, the more battery it consumes. It can also issue warnings such as an elevated heart rate alert if needed. Further, there’s Blood Oxygen Saturation measurement, powered by Huami self-developed oxygen data AI engine. You also get support for the PAI health assessment system and Blood-oxygen saturation (SpO2) measurement.

I do not generally like wearing something on my wrist while sleeping, but I can wear the GTS 2 mini 24x7 including sleep cycles, thanks to its light weight.

You can also track the quality of your sleep with the Amazfit GTS 2 mini. It can analyze sleep stages from light to deep and REM stages during the night and naps during the day. The feature is very close to accurate, including nap tracking, but the details on the awake time between sleep cycles could be worked upon. The smartwatch also offers female cycle tracking to follow the length of menstrual cycles, identify fertile days, and give women insights into their cycle. Furthermore, the GTS 2 mini can help you keep an eye on your stress levels and take action.

Additional features include compass, timer, stopwatch, music controls, camera shutter, and more. There’s the ability to view notifications and incoming calls from your phone. Notably, the notifications are non-actionable, and you can’t store music on your watch or answer calls from the device, unlike the GTS 2. Moreover, you can’t even swipe to clear the notification.

                      GTS 2 mini features

As for the accuracy of workouts and step tracking, the Amazfit GTS 2 mini gives close to accurate results. It can track your steps, distance walked, and calories burnt. There are up to 70 sports modes including running, cycling, swimming, treadmill, as well as walking, which can be tracked courtesy of GPS and GLONASS.

You can pair the Amazfit GTS 2 mini to an Android phone as well as your iPhone since the Zepp app is available on both platforms. Moreover, the smartwatch is advertised to come with Amazon Alexa virtual assistant built-in, but it isn’t present currently. On being asked, the company said it will roll out the feature to the device soon.

                      Battery optimized to last long

Amazfit GTS 2 mini notification preview

I’ve been wearing the Amazfit GTS 2 mini for almost a week now. Meanwhile, the battery life is down to 30 percent. My use case includes AOD on and HR monitoring set at 5 minutes intervals. Amazfit says its 220mAh can last up to 14 days on a single charge on typical usage, and it is not wrong. The charging mechanism is pretty simple too. It attaches to the charging pin magnetically, and the charging cable can be plugged into a 10W adaptor. The wearable takes about 1.5 hours for a full charge.

Amazfit GTS 2 mini hands-on preview: Conclusion

The Amazfit GTS 2 mini is a fashionable fitness wearable that offers a range of features. It is backed up by an app that shows meaningful data. You have the option to customize the watch face to your liking, and it lasts long too. At INR 6,999 the smartwatch seems like a decent offering. It is minimalistic but efficient at what it does. If you care about the missing features like picking up calls on the smartwatch, we’d recommend you to wait for our Amazfit GTS 2 and GTR 2 reviews before making a purchase decision.

Amazfit Bip U, Bip U Pro make their way to the US as budget wearables

Amazfit has launched two budget smartwatches in the US. The Amazfit Bip U and Bip U Pro are making their way to the US weeks after they were first announced. The former is priced at $59.99. Plus, the company is currently offering a $10 discount. In contrast, the Pro model is priced at $69.99. To recall, the Chinese version, which was launched earlier this month sells at a price of 349 yuan, which is about $52.

The Amazfit Bip U features a 1.43-inch TFT LCD color display that is under the protection of 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It comes with an anti-fingerprint coating with a 320 x 320-pixel resolution. It comes equipped with 60 plus sports modes which include running, cycling, yoga, dancing, skating, kickboxing, and more. The wearable is claimed to last up to 9 days on a single charge.

The Amazfit Bip U can be paired with an app to show your position. It can track your daily activities with steps, calories, distance, and active hours. Moreover, it has 5ATM water resistance up to 50 meters. It also comes equipped with 2 PPG bio-tracking optical sensors, that monitor your heart rate 24 hours a day which is powered by OxygenBeats SpO2 measurement that measures blood oxygen saturation. It can also track menstrual cycles and ovulation along with reminders, and has PAI Assessment System.

With the Pro variant, you get a 1.43-inch square LCD display, and a 225mAh battery that is said to last up to nine days on a single charge. It features Bluetooth 5, 5ATM, and 60 sports modes. The differentiating factor between the Pro and non-Pro here is GPS. The Amazfit Pop Pro comes equipped with GPS meaning that it will track your running and cycling workouts even if your phone isn’t with you.

Amazfit GTS 2 mini set to launch in India for INR 6,999 on Dec 26

Amazfit has been on a launch spree in India this December. It introduced the GTR 2 and GTS 2 recently. Now, the company is all set to launch its Amazfit GTS 2 mini in the country. The device will go official on December 26.
