watchOS 4 appears to lack advanced heart rate functionality on first-gen Apple Watch

If you're still holding onto the first-generation Apple Watch, packing a single-core S1 SoC, your watchOS 4 update will lack a few key features.

Several refurbished Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 models are here to save you a few bucks

Apple’s unique propensity for fat profit margins extends to pre-owned iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple TVs, Macs and now Apple Watches, which are sometimes sold in so-called “refurbished” condition, tested, certified and covered by one-year warranties, at higher prices than brand-new models via third-party retailers.

It’s true, the newly added certified refurbished Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 hardly feel like bargains, starting at $229 and, get this, $469 respectively. But technically, they are discounted by between 14 and 16 percent off the list prices of their untouched, unused counterparts, which is better than nothing.

Mind you, the Series 1 Apple Watch isn’t the same thing as the first-gen, or “Series 0”, wearable device, squeezing an improved S2 processor into a familiar, non-GPS-including package. Normally available for $269 and up, the entry-level 2016 gadget can now be yours straight from Cupertino’s US e-store at $40 off with silver, space gray, gold or rose gold 38mm aluminum cases, as well as white, black, concrete or pink sand Sport Bands.

A quartet of 42mm refurb variants comes at a $20 premium after a $50 markdown, with your choice of midnight blue, black, cocoa or white fluoroelastomer straps, and once again, silver, space gray, gold or rose gold main bodies.

As for “tested and certified” secondhand Series 2 editions, you’re not looking at many options yet. Just a 38mm space black stainless steel case/black Sport Band flavor setting you back $469 instead of $549, and $509 (down from $599) 42mm black or white versions with built-in GPS, enhanced water resistance, larger batteries and brighter screens.

Apple’s Black Friday ‘shopping event’ is all about gift cards for old gear

You weren’t really expecting free latest-generation iPhones straight from on and offline Apple Stores, right? If you were, you must not know who you’re dealing with here. This is a profit-hungry company that didn’t even hold a Black Friday sale last year, so we should probably be thankful they’re now offering these modest complimentary gift cards with select iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and Apple TV purchases.

Namely, up to $50 coupons are to be had stateside if you’re in the market for a SIM-free iPhone SE, 6s or 6s Plus today only, up to $100 gifts on all available iPad models, including Pros, the Air 2 and Mini 4, a flat $25 freebie for the Apple Watch Series 1 family, $150 with “select” Macs (no Touch Bar variant), and $25 when you buy an Apple TV.

Extremely similar one-day deals are on across a number of other territories, like Canada or Australia, and it goes without saying you can save a lot more through third-party retailers or carriers. For instance, T-Mobile and Verizon on American shores. Not to mention the avalanche of direct iPad markdowns at Best Buy, Walmart, Target and so on. Still, if you absolutely have to do your shopping at Apple, up to $150 gift cards are better than nothing, we guess.

watchOS 3, iOS 10 released, but take your time with it

In another day or two, we’ll probably have to publish a quick story about how fast iOS 10 is being adopted and the torrents of people finding major, iPhone- or iPhone-bricking problems with the update. We hope not to have to write the latter story, actually, but we expect to.Never mind all that, as the iOS 10 software package is available for using to download and install now, as is the watchOS 3 update. You can go to your ...
