New Samsung Windows Phone model shows up at FCC

Recently, we’ve been thinking a lot about the future of Windows Phone and Microsoft’s OEM partners, now that the company is swallowing up Nokia and the Lumia brand. We know that Huawei is along for the ride, but haven’t heard much about what’s next for companies like HTC or Samsung. Well, this almost certainly predates the Nokia announcement by a good chunk of time, but it looks like Samsung may have been working on a new WP8 model, showing up today in FCC paperwork. The phone is Samsung model SGH-i187. That ...

Samsung ATIV S Neo review: the best of limited options

Sometimes, as a tech reviewer, you encounter a smartphone so good that you don’t want to send it back to the manufacturer at the end of the review period. Other times, you can’t wait to drop it in the mail and scurry back to the safety of your daily driver. For this reviewer, Samsung’s ATIV S Neo is, unfortunately, an example of the latter. Not because it does much wrong, necessarily, but because it’s almost totally unremarkable – and it fails to live up to a promise Sprint made its users back in January

Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update hits more and more phones

One week ago, we saw Microsoft post a new entry on its Windows Phone 8 update history page, describing the platform’s GDR2 update. While it was arriving from the factory on certain new handset, we had yet to witness the update go out to existing phones. Seeing that page change made us wonder if updates were forthcoming, and it seems that notion was right on the money; let’s take a look at what’s happened. You may have already heard that GDR2 updates were ...

Samsung ATIV S – After The Buzz, Episode 16 (Video)

Most new-device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup ...

The Pocketnow Weekly Podcast, Episode 037

We love us some new technology, and we certainly give it its fair shake on today’s episode of the Pocketnow Weekly. But every so often, you need to give a little lip-service to the tech of days gone by. The platforms and devices of yesteryear. That’s right: I’m talking about dead technology. It makes sense, then, that a man going by the twitter handle DeadTechnology is here to help us dust off those fond memories. In his inaugural visit to the Pocketnow Weekly, our own Adam Doud pulls back the veil of public apathy secrecy surrounding the phenomenon of the “webOS ...

First Two Windows Phone 8 Models for Sprint Identified

Last week, we got an update on Sprint’s plans to finally add Windows Phone 8 devices to its lineup, learning that the carrier had its eyes on a pair of phones with the intent on offering them this summer. While that news was nice to hear it kept us wondering: just which devices were we talking about? It’s still not official, but a rumor attempting to ID this pair has just arrived, naming them as Samsung’s ATIV S and

Samsung ATIV Odyssey vs Samsung ATIV S (Video)

The newest Verizon Wireless smartphone, the ATIV Odyssey, is also the first Samsung-built Windows Phone 8 device to hit an American carrier. That said, it’s not the first ATIV-branded smartphone. That title belongs to the ATIV S, which we reviewed last month. By our count, that leaves two ATIV smartphones nimbly galloping about the globe, and damned if we’re not gonna compare ‘em. We
