Canadian police stingrayed BlackBerry phones in mobster case

A judge has lifted a press embargo has on court records that tell how the Royal Canadian Mounted Police cracked into encrypted BlackBerry communications. The methods were used in the investigation of a member of a New York mafia who was fatally shot in the outskirts of Montreal in 2011.The RCMP used “stingrays” — fake cell towers — to pick up on IMSI numbers, identifying the mobile subscribers that connected with it. Other information, like location, text and voice conversations, can also be extracted. Police claim they were only used to sort out suspects’ phones, ...

BBM premium features go free – but will they be enough to keep users?

BlackBerry’s just not a company that can count on selling a ton of smartphones anymore, and staying relevant has meant making efforts to draw in users with its services. Back in the fall of 2013, well before we saw the manufacturer expand its smartphone line to Android, BlackBerry was already experimenting with just that kind of cross-platform draw, inviting Android and iOS users to ...

BBM beta for Windows Phone goes public

As much as we struggle to keep BlackBerry alive in our feeds, the company isn’t doing the best job in helping us reach that goal. BlackBerry is more of an uncertainty than it is the aspiring line of products that most of us drooled for in the past. That said, BBM has been doing a decent job in gaining some cross-platform glory, and the next frontier is ...

BlackBerry graduates BBM Channels from beta, goes big-league

This past spring, BlackBerry announced BBM Channels, a new social extension to BlackBerry Messenger, letting users create pages of their own content – the titular Channels – that others can then subscribe to. It’s been in beta testing on BlackBerry platforms ever since, but today we finally see the company pull all the stops and go forward with plans to leave the Beta Zone, bringing BBM Channels to all its users. Actually, it hasn’t happened just yet, but it’s been confirmed for today, and availability should ...

BBM for iOS and Android reaches 10 million downloads in one day

Just a couple of weeks ago, we all waited and forgot about BBM reaching iOS and Android, since first of all it didn’t happen, and second, it’s not like if we had any buddies left in the platform. The company has gained and lost buyers in the last couple of weeks, and it all seemed like if the cross-platform BBM project was silently abandoned in favor of securing an economic future. All the drama came to an end two days ago, or at least part of it, as the app was finally launched on both iOS and Android at the same time, and if you thought that people didn’t really care ...

BlackBerry Messenger arrives for Android & iOS; better late than never?

It seems like the past couple months of BlackBerry news have been dominated by two main stories, neither of which painted the company in a particularly favorable light: we had all the business concerning plans to sell off the company, as well as the totally botched cross-platform BlackBerry messenger launch. BlackBerry blamed the issue on users attempting to connect to the service early by means of leaked client apps – though if they couldn’t ...

Pocketnow Weekly 062: iPhone launch day, Xperia Z1, Lumia 1520 & more

It’s iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s launch day, and we can’t think of a better way to commemorate the event than with a Pocketnow Weekly podcast. Actually, yes we can: it would be great to take a look back at Apple’s pre-iPhone days with the spectacular failure that was the Motorola “iTunes phone” of 2005 – fortunately, we already took care of that yesterday. So we’ll discuss the MOTOROKR E1 a little bit on today’s Weekly, before delving in to the ...
