We could get BOE displays in the Huawei Mate 40, Samsung and LG panels in the Mate 40 Pro

It seems that the new Mate 40 series will come with Chinese OLED panels. BOE has been working to become an important name in the display industry, and it seems that it is heading in the right direction. The latest rumor suggests that BOE will be the exclusive supplier of the Huawei Mate 40, while the Mate 40 Pro may also use OLED panels from Samsung and LG.

According to a report from TheElec, BOE may be the only supplier of on-cell organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for the upcoming Huawei Mate 40. Samsung and LG will also be helping BOE provide on-cell displays to the Mate 40 Pro. These new panels will have a touch-sensitive layer embedded in the display panel, which means that these displays will have better optical and mechanical properties.

We also get information from leaker @RODENT950 who claims that the new Mate 40 will include a curved screen and a single selfie camera, while the Huawei Mate 40 Pro would have a waterfall display, with a pill-shaped punch-hole display to house two selfie cameras. BOE may also supply OLED panels for Apple and Samsung, as soon as they successfully clear quality standards.

Don’t expect to find BOE OLED panels in 5G iPhones soon

We know that Apple has been trying to get OLED panels for its upcoming iPhones 12 lineup from BOE, but it seems that things arenā€™t going so well. The latest report suggests that we wonā€™t find Chinese OLED displays in the first 5G iPhones.

New information from Digitimes claims that BOE has failed to secure Appleā€™s approval of its OLED panels. This is not the first time BOE fails to pass quality tests, so this means that we wonā€™t see these displays in the first iPhone 12 shipments. BOE screens are supposed to be included in the more affordable versions of the upcoming 5G iPhones, which include the 5.4-inch and the non-Pro 6.1-inch iPhone 12. BOEā€™s latest downfall includes quality issues, but it hopes to begin shipping OLED panels to Apple in the last quarter of 2020. However, Apple should still be able to launch its devices in September, as LG Display should have enough displays for these entry-level devices, and Samsung Display takes care of the higher-end 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Pro and Pro Max variants of the iPhone 12.

BOE is allegedly having quality issues with iPhone 12 OLED displays

Itā€™s not the first time that we get information concerning BOE and their problems in quality tests. Just two days ago, we say that Samsung was going to use its own OLED panels in the Galaxy S21, as BOE had failed quality tests, and it seems that the company is also having problems with the screens for the upcoming iPhone 12.

It seems that Appleā€™s plans to find alternatives to Samsungā€™s OLED displays havenā€™t been so great. Samsung Display is still Cupertinoā€™s main supplier of OLED screens, with LG and now BOE on a smaller scale. This last one is allegedly failing quality checks of the iPhone 12. A report from Ddaily claims that BOEā€™s panels didnā€™t only fail Samsungā€™s test to be in the next Samsung Galaxy S21, but Appleā€™s tests as well. However, BOE would try again, and submit new panels to both Samsung and Apple to see if this time they pass quality checks.

Samsung might use its own OLED panels on Galaxy S21 as BOE fails quality test

Back in April, we came across a report from South Korea claiming that Samsung will source OLED panel for the upcoming Galaxy S flagship – tentatively called the Galaxy S21 – from BOE. Well, it now appears that BOE is out of the equation, and Samsung Display will again provide the panels for the upcoming Galaxy S series flagships.

As per a report from Korea-based DDaily, BOE failed to pass Samsung’s display quality test. In fact, the panels provided by BOE reportedly failed at the very first quality analysis test, but the company plans to re-apply for another round of testing for 6.67-inch flexible OLED panels demanded by Samsung.

Notably, BOE even failed to supply the first shipment of OLED panels for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 12 series. While it remains to be seen whether BOE finally manages to impress Samsung with the quality of its OLED panels, it is quite likely that the South Korean electronics giant will again knock at the doors of Samsung Display to supply OLED panels for the Galaxy S21 lineup.

Itā€™s official! OnePlus will no longer make McLaren Edition smartphones

Earlier this month we covered how OnePlus’ name wasn’t on McLaren’s list of collaborators anymore. Now, a McLaren spokesperson just went on record and officially stated that their partnership has come to an end. According to him, it came to their scheduled conclusion and that OnePlus has been supportive and that they wish to see them in the future. We got two phones out of their partnership and we don’t know how they’ll handle the Concept One if it ever comes out, since yes, that was a McLaren phone.

Sony schedules a PlayStation 5 game reveal event on June 5

And listen, if there’s a time for gaming consoles, it’s now, as we need to stay at home, and it seems Sony is willing to bank on it. The company just announced that they’ll be hosting an event on June 4th for the PlayStation 5. Sony is promising to showcase ‘the future of gaming’ at this event which typically means that we’ll be seeing some games for the upcoming console. We haven’t gotten any other details from Sony but a recent report claims that they might show a total of 38 games including a bunch of exclusives. The event will be live on YouTube and Twitch and we hope to get to see some hardware as well. Let’s also hope that hardware is not crazy expensive, as that would be unrealistic in today’s economy.

Apple needs an urgent supply of LCD panels from LG Display

It looks like the pandemic is affecting Apple in sales but not in the conventional way. Cupertino originally cut orders for their products in Q2 to anticipate the pandemic. What they didn’t anticipate is that due to the transition to e-learning, iPad stocks in China have been down since March because most parents have bought one for their kids to attend school from home. This would be good for Apple if they wouldn’t have cut orders before, and now they’re urgently asking LG for LCD panels to meet their iPad demands. The problem is, these requests usually come three months in advance to give room for LG to prepare. Apple has other providers for the iPad displays like BOE and Sharp, but LG might want to answer this because of their deal to supply displays for the iPhone 12 Max. Clearly this is a good problem to have right now.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+ cameras leaked?

According to this new leak, the Galaxy Note 20 will fix some of the focusing issues we had with the S20 Ultra from a hardware perspective. The leak gives us both of the camera arrays, the regular Note 20 will apparently bring a 12MP main sensor, a 64MP telephoto, and a 12MP Ultra Wide. On the other side, the Note 20+ will bring the 108MP main sensor, a 12MP telephoto, a 12MP ultra wide and laser autofocus. The laser autofocus would help the main sensor to lock into subjects and while the 12MP telephoto doesnā€™t sound as impressive in paper as the S20 Ultras 48MP, the 12MP telephoto might help out during pixel binning as the Ultra does create 12MP images after all. It looks like the camera won’t be that different from the S20’s, let’s just hope they refine it. Now if only they included the return of variable aperture. A sensor this large needs it.

Pixel 4a XL leaks show what the phone looked like before it was canceled

And finally the most interesting news today have to do with the Google Pixel 4a XL. I know, that one that apparently won’t get to ever be. Most of the leaks have hinted that there won’t be a 4a XL variant this year but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t in development. We have some leaked images from 9to5Google of Pixel 4a cases where we see the familiar design. It has the orange Power button, the hole for the fingerprint scanner at the back and the 3.5mm headphone jack. However, the camera cutout shows too lenses here and we’re only expecting a single shooter for the 4a. We also have some CAD renders of the phone which show the dual lens camera and the punch hole at the front. Why dual cameras on this phone and not on the small variant is a good question, but even more important, why do you think Google cancelled this phone?

Apple needs an urgent supply of LCD panels from LG Display

We have seen several reports on how the current situation is affecting sales for some big names in the tech world, but we have also seen how other companies have benefited from these times. The latest report suggests that Apple iPads have been selling well, and therefore, it has asked LG to ramp up production of LCD panels.

Apparently, the surge in demand for iPads during the pandemic in Asia has forced Apple to request more LCD panels from LG Display for these devices. Apple may have taken a bad decision when it lowered its orders of LCD displays to LG. It seems that Cupertino expected a drop in sales, but things havenā€™t gone as planned. Now, LG has to quickly deliver these LCD panels before Apple may want to consider other companies such as Sharp or BOE.

Samsung may provide almost 80% of the iPhone 12’s OLED displays

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

Apple may be looking for ways to stop depending on Samsungā€™s OLED panels, but it seems that Samsung Display would provide almost 80 percent of the OLED displays that will be used in the upcoming iPhone 12.

ā€œSamsung Display has obtained nearly 80% of the overall panel orders for Appleā€™s next-generation iPhone series tentatively dubbed ā€ŒiPhone 12ā€Œ slated for launch later this year, according to industry sources. LG Display and BOE are other panel suppliers for the upcoming iPhones.ā€

It seems that this yearā€™s iPhone 12 displays may come from three different suppliers. According to DigiTimes, BOE may become one of Appleā€™s suppliers for OLED panels, and join LG and Samsung. Samsung has been Appleā€™s OLED supplier since 2017 when the company finally gave its iPhone X this feature. Now, Samsung would supply the displays for three of the upcoming iPhone 12 variants, the 5.4-inch entry-level option, the 6.1, and 6.7-inch iPhone Pro models; LG and BOE displays may be used in the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 with similar specs to the entry-level variant.

iOS 13.5 brings Exposure Notification API, faster unlock experience while wearing a mask

Apple just started rolling out iOS 13.5 which brings some changes directly related to the pandemic. For starters, it brings the new notification exposure API they built with Google which is the foundation on which contact tracing apps will be developed. Other key features include Face ID now detecting that you’re wearing a mask and immediately asks for your password instead of it taking forever to realize, it also works with Apple Pay and other apps. We have the full list of changes in the description.

OnePlus might not launch another McLaren Edition phone in the future

Remember the phone with the coolest name ever? Yes, we’re talking about the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition. It seems we won’t have another one to mock as, OnePlus is no longer listed in the official McLaren partners page. None of the companies has made a statement yet but it seems that their partnership has come to an end, meaning that we won’t see any McLaren branded phone from OnePlus soon. It could be a mistake or part of a strategy but, the logo still isnā€™t back on the site. We’ll keep you posted in case we have official statements. Let’s hope that if they do decide to work together again, the name becomes a bit less ridiculous.

We have new details about the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 launch event

Now as for some sad possible updates from the pandemic, well, Samsung usually hosts two major Unpacked Events each year for their flagship releases but. I’m actually shocked we still got the February Unpacked. Thing is, for obvious reasons this year will be different. According to a report from South Korea, Samsung has already taken their decision and this will be the first time ever that the company is releasing a flagship online. We get tons of silent releases online from Samsung but they will obviously have some sort of event for the Note’s Unpacked. The event is still slated for August but we don’t have any specific dates yet. Some other products we might get at this event include obviously the Galaxy Note 20, the Galaxy Fold 2 and some wearables.

Samsung Galaxy S21 could arrive with Chinese OLED displays

A couple of weeks ago we reported that Samsung could be ditching Samsung Display for the Galaxy S21 but, not entirely. According to some industry insiders, after a month of preliminary negotiations, Samsung just sent an official request for quotation to BOE which hints to the deal happening and also the fact that they are already working on the S21. Now, it isn’t clear if we’ll be getting a Galaxy S21 Ultra but, that one wouldn’t be using a BOE display because these orders are for 90Hz displays. They have also sent a quotation request to Samsung Display for 60Hz and 120Hz displays so, they aren’t leaving them completely. According to other insiders, Samsung is trying to get Samsung Display to lower the price on the panels and the threat of having BOE replace them might work.

Story of the day:

More rumors say that the Google Pixel 5 will have a mid-range processor

And finally, let’s call this the most interesting news today. I mean, Pixels have taken the spotlight for weeks now, though I wish they would sell as much as people care about the news. Thing is we’ve been getting several rumors that the Google Pixel 5 might not be a flagship. Yesterday we covered the fact that a Google survey showed that this phone might cost as low as $699. Now, XDA has found some new evidence in the Android 11 Developer Preview that hint to the Pixel 5 bringing the Snapdragon 765G processor. It isn’t clear if it will be the 765G or the new 768G but it is compatible to what they found in the new Google Camera APK for upcoming Pixel phones. The price tag also hints that this phone might not bring a Snapdragon 865 after all.

Samsung Galaxy S21 could arrive with Chinese OLED displays

This is not the first time we get rumors that Samsung is planning on buying display panels from BOE. The first time we heard these rumors were almost a month ago when rumors said that Samsung might want to use Chinese displays on its mid-range smartphones. However, new information suggests that we could even see these, less expensive OLED displays in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S21.

According to industry insiders, the base model of the Samsung Galaxy S21 may come with Chinese made OLED display. Samsung may have been negotiating with BOE for almost a month now, and it may have finally sent an official request for a quotation. These displays, however, donā€™t support 120Hz refresh rates, so they probably wonā€™t be found in the higher-end variants, since these high refresh rates are a crucial selling point for the current flagships.

At the moment, Samsung may only be interested in BOE OLED displays capable of 90Hz refresh rates, while Samsung Display would still supply OLED panels with 120Hz support. It is also believed that Samsung Electronics is trying to make Samsung Display lower panel prices, as they may feel threatened to lose some orders to BOE. Whatever the case, it will also help Samsung reduce the manufacturing costs of its next Galaxy S flagship.
