iOS 14.4 arrives with a fix for security bugs that may have been actively exploited

Now let’s continue with official news, but let’s switch gears into Apple, as I don’t know about you but my Apple Watch was acting funky in calorie counting, so I was waiting for an update. Yesterday, the company released iOS 14.4, iPadOS 14.4 and watchOS 7.3, which I highly recommend you download. See, iOS 14.4 includes improvements like, smaller QR codes being recognized by the camera, the option to classify your Bluetooth devices in Settings for the phone to correctly identify headphones or another devices. Apple is also now warning you, that with iOS 14.4 your iPhone can recognize if the camera on it had a third party repair for the iPhone 12 Series, which is handy if you buy second hand I guess. iOS 14.4 also brings a ton of bug fixes, like the artifacts that appear in HDR photos in the 12 Pro, some widgets that wouldn’t show your activity data, and delayed typing in the keyboard. Probably one of the biggest changes is with the HomePod mini as Apple is now introducing the functionality of the U1 Ultra Wideband chip for the iPhone 11 and 12 Series. This improves the handoff feature, as well as visual, audible and haptic effects while doing so. watchOS 7.3 that brings some new Unity faces, ECG support for more countries, enhancements to Fitness+, but what I really cared about was the bug fixes. So yeah, make sure to download it if you’re having issues with some bugs, not so much if you have a third party camera. And we also have a full list of the updates in the links below.

Carl Pei is now the CEO and co-founder of Nothing

Now let’s move on to Nothing, and no this is not one of Diego’s bad jokes. I guess Carl Pei decided that the best way to name his new company is to call it Nothing. A few months ago he made headlines after leaving OnePlus to start his own venture and now, he’s announcing his new company, “Nothing”. This comes shortly after the $7M he got in financing was announced back in December with funding from his friends like Kevin Lin and even Casey Neistat. Carl issued out a statement saying, “it’s been a while since anything interesting has happened in tech. It’s time for a breeze of fresh change”. He claims that Nothing’s mission is to “remove barriers between people and technology to create a seamless digital future. He believes that the best technology is beautiful and intuitive to use, and once it is sufficiently advanced, it should fade into the background, and feel like “nothing”. The company will be releasing their first products in the first half of this year but, we have no information on what kind of products or how many we should expect. We don’t even know what field they’re going into but, we really do hope this is not another “Essential” case as, we all know how that went down. Let us know if you like the name Nothing, cause I understand the idea, but I debate the negative nature of the name, though hey, he’s someone I admire as a marketing genius so I’m excited.

More OnePlus 9 images surface online

And yes, we’re getting closer to the OnePlus 9 Series as 2021 is kind of the year of earlier releases like we saw with the S21. A couple of weeks ago we got some high definition renders of the phone from Ben Geskin and now we get to see the real deal. This is apparently the OnePlus 9 Pro and these pictures were taken somewhere in the Chinese subway. From the back we get to see the new camera module which brings 2 large sensors for the 48MP primary, the wide angle and of course, a smaller lens for the macro. This looks like a silver color variant with the OnePlus Logo in the center as you could expect. From the front, remember this is the Pro so it is rocking a curved display with very small bezels and that punch hole looks so small it kind of looks photoshopped. On the display you also get to see the specs, like the Snapdragon 888, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. We’re also expecting this phone to bring a 32MP selfie shooter, a 4500 mAh battery with 40W wireless charging. We’re expecting this phone along with the OnePlus 9 and the 9 Lite some time in March, along with maybe the OnePlus Watch which was recently certified.

Story of the day:

AirPods Pro 2 rumor again points to 1H 2021 launch

iPhone 13 series could support faster Wi-Fi 6E

Spigen’s AirTags case listed online, hints at imminent debut of Apple’s object tracker

And finally, for the hottest news today, let’s move back on to Apple but for 3 different reports of things we should expect this year, so bear with me. Let’s start with the next generation AirPods Pro which should be launched very soon. According to a new report from DigiTimes, a company called Winbond is expected to be one of the suppliers for the next generation AirPods Pro which are “slated for a launch later in the first half of the year”. And actually, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this as a previous report claimed that we should get these in April with the iPhone SE+… I know, you heard that right, SE+. Moving on to another unreleased wearable, let’s talk AirTags. We have some new, high resolution images of another leather keychain carrier for the AirTags from a company called Cyrill which is actually a sub-brand for Spigen. The keychain is listed at $20 along with its features like being wireless charging compatible. The thing about is, this keychain is listed for “Late October” but these have been delayed so much, this could probably be late October for 2020 so, we’ll see. Finally, let’s talk iPhone 13 as, a new report from a Barclays Analyst claims that the iPhone 13 Series will bring Wi-Fi 6E amplifiers with suppliers like Broadcom benefiting from Apple and Samsung adopting the technology. Wi-Fi 6E is the new technology which offers higher performance, lower latency and faster data rates at up to 6GHz.. You know, stuff the Galaxy S21 Ultra has. We’ll see what else we get as, is it just me or are the iPhone leaks getting kinda slow?

Apple’s Mac mini, Samsung Galaxy S20+ and more are on sale today

Since the hottest news today are about Samsung, let’s talk Samsung deals as, the company is having a “Samsung Week Deals” on Amazon. This means you can get the Galaxy S20+ for $250 off, leaving it at $950 or the S20 for $200 off, leaving that at $800 shipped. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is also $100 off, leaving the 128GB variant for $330. For those of you looking for the trade-in deals, they’re still going and we’ll leave them on the links in the description as, the Z Flip is available for a crazy $100 if you have an eligible device. The Google Pixel 5 is $500 off from it’s original price tag at Verizon, meaning you can get it for a one-time payment of $300. Finally, if you’re looking for an Intel Mac Mini.. For some reason.. The Intel Core i5, 512GB of storage model is available for $800, with $300 in savings. We have more deals on Beats products, GoPros and more in the links below.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei reveals what he is doing next

Back in October, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei decided to leave the company and we’ve all been wondering what he plans to do next. Well, after two months in hiatus, he has raised a $7M funding for his new company. The investors include friends of him like Casey Neistat, Steve Huffman from Reddit and more, and apparently Carl is looking to start an audio-related company. Pei claims that he plans to use the capital to setup an office in London, hire talent and fund R&D. As a matter of fact he posted a “we are hiring” tweet saying “Let’s Build the Future Together”. According to a report from Wired, we can expect the first products to launch sometime next year, and Pei says that the company will have a broader focus than just headphones. So yeah, apparently they want to move really aggressively on their vision and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Google’s 5G Pixels get new Adaptive features, older Pixels also receive a ton of cool tricks

Now, let’s move on to Google as, the company just released their latest “Pixel Feature Drop”, this means that they just added a ton of new features to.. Pixels. For the latest Pixels, probably the most interesting features are Adaptive Sound and Connectivity where, the phone uses the mic to detect the acoustics in the surroundings to adjust your eq and volume, and it now automatically switches to 4G for basic tasks, to help you save some battery. Adaptive battery is now available as well, detecting when the user is about to miss its usual charging schedule and it helps it preserve battery life by controlling how fast the phone charges. If you have an older Pixel, Google is also showing some love, like in the case of the Pixel 3 where “Hold For Me” is now available, letting the Google Assistant wait for you on the line whenever you’re put on hold. Extreme Battery Saver, new Google Lens integration, Now Playing History and even more features also made the cut. If you have a Pixel make sure to check out the links in the description so you know everything you’re getting.

Apple’s Airpods Max aren’t everything Apple was hoping to deliver

Moving on to Apple, let’s talk about AirPods Max for a second as, you know that whenever Apple releases something, we get tidbits and details until after the fact. If you want to go in depth, I suggest you watch yesterday’s Pocketnow Daily where we talked about all the details but, the AirPods Max are Apple’s new over-the-ear headphones which offer some interesting features for $549. Yeah $549. Well, according to some new information AirPods Max didn’t bring all the features they were supposed to. For example, they are not equipped with the U1 Ultra wideband chip like it was rumored but they still managed to deliver spatial audio and other features. This is probably because, Apple reportedly started mass production a little over a month ago after making many changes according to Jon Prosser. But, Apple Engineers claim that Cupertino has been developing these for a crazy 4 years, when the original AirPods launched.. Prosser also claims that we’ll still be getting the Sport version.. But there really is no time frame for it at the moment. We’ll keep you posted on the review once our unit arrives, and it’ll reportedly happen for my birthday.

FTC sues Facebook over monopolistic conduct, seeks to undo WhatsApp and Instagram deals

Alright, we don’t usually cover lawsuits and stuff like that unless it’s something major or things that affects consumers, like Epic vs Apple. That said, if it’s about my least favorite company, let’s talk. The FTC just announced that they’re suing Facebook. This time it’s for “illegally maintaining their personal social network monopoly through a years-long course of anticompetitive conduct.” The FTC is focusing this lawsuit on Facebook using their power to “eliminate threats” to their monopoly and the effects it has on consumers. And it’s not the first time we’ve heard something like this but this time, the FTC is seeking a permanent injunction in federal court that could do things like this: Require divestment of assets, including Instagram and WhatsApp and require Facebook to seek for approval before mergers and acquisitions. This means that if everything goes well for the FTC, Facebook would have to sell Instagram and WhatsApp, probably giving us back some of our favorite apps. Now, it’s still early to tell as they just filed it but we’ll definitely keep you posted as, we know a lot of you guys were mad at those last updates.

Samsung Galaxy S21 series is up for blind pre-order in India: Report

Samsung Galaxy S21 series appears in official video teaser leak

And finally the hottest news of the day have to do with Samsung and the Galaxy S21 series, as we have a ton of leaks and reports today so, bear with us. We have some of the official video teasers for the upcoming devices which were recovered by Android Police. We get three different videos, the first two are almost identical, showing the S21 and the s21+’s design in the Phantom Violet colorway which looks pretty good. However, when it comes to the Ultra, the video emphasizes on the new camera module which shows the 4 or 5 different lenses we’re getting with this device in the gray color variant. Again for the Ultra, we’re expecting the main 108MP sensor, a 12MP ultra wide, a 10MP 10x telephoto and a 10MP 3x telephoto. Moving on from the design and the cameras, Ice Universe claims that we’re getting a new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor which is 1.77x larger than the previous generation, and it’s reportedly twice as faster when compared to the last one. According to him, you don’t even need to press, it’s a simple tap to unlock now. Finally, a new report from India also claims that the S21 will be launched later there but.. It’s already available for pre-orders. If you go to their Opera House Store you can blindly pre-order the phone for 2000 Rupees. So yeah, we’re expecting these phones to launch some time around January 14, with them being available in stores by the end of the month. Other reports claim that these could be $100-200 less expensive and bring S Pen support as the rumors hint to Sammy getting rid of the Note line.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei reveals what he is doing next

It's only fair to share...Share on RedditShare on FacebookShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Tumblr

In October 2020, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei left the company. Since then, he’s been away from media attention. After two months of exit, we now know what the Swedish entrepreneur is planning. He is building a new startup. Moreover, he has raised USD 7 million funding for his new audio startup. This venture is said to step in the market sometime in 2021.

As per Techcrunch, Pei has raised USD 7 million from high-profile investors for his new hardware venture. The entrepreneur said that he had secured the seed financing from his friends and private investors, which include Tony Fadell (Principal at Future Shape and inventor of the iPod), YouTuber Casey Neistat, Kevin Lin (co-founder of Twitch), Steve Huffman (chief executive of Reddit), Liam Casey (founder and chief executive of PCH), Paddy Cosgrave (founder of Web Summit) Josh Buckley (chief executive of Product Hunt), and a group of former and current Truecaller employees Kim Fai Kok, Nick Dahl, and Zakaria Hersi.

Pei says he has plans to use the fresh capital to set up an office in London, hire talent and fund product research and development. He also posted a ‘we are hiring’ tweet, which leads to the page of open positions in cities like Bangalore, India and London, GB.

I am grateful and tremendously excited to have friends of this caliber supporting us in building what’s next. We plan on moving aggressively against our vision, and can’t wait to see how the market will react. This seed investment will support the creation of a head office in London, hiring of the team, and finance ongoing product research and development efforts.

Carl Pei

Despite Pei remaining tight-lipped about his upcoming venture, a report from Wired claims that his next brand is audio-related. Furthermore, we can expect its first products to be launched next year. Pei has also said that his company will have a broader focus than just headphones.

We also have deals on Motorola phones, Sennheiser Earbuds and more in the links in the description.

Nokia is working to bring 4G networks to the moon

Alright, this is not an April joke, I promise. See while carriers are trying to deploy 5G and trying to give us decent LTE speeds here on Earth, it looks like Nokia is trying to put 4G on the moon. Yeah you heard that right. This plan apparently started back in 2018 and now, NASA just gave Nokia $14.1M to help achieve this. The project involves Nokia building a 4G cellular communication network on the moon, which would help for lunar surface research missions. NASA hopes that this new system can support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increase speeds and provide more reliability than the current standards. Honestly, we’re just covering because it’s pretty cool but, let’s see how it pans out.

Google Search, Lens, and Maps get new features to make your pandemic life easier

Now let’s talk about Google as, the company surprised us with their “Search On” Event yesterday which focused mainly on the improvements coming to Google Search and more. Some of the updates they announced include new shortcuts for Google Lens that appear on both the Google App and Chrome for Android. Google is also significantly improving the “Did You Mean” spell correction on Google Search with their BERT neural network. Search will now be able to show you cars inside and out by using the same technology they use for their 3D animals and cellular models. Another cool feature is letting you Hum to Search, for those of you that didn’t get to Shazam the song while it was playing but you still have the melody stuck in your head. Of course, this is just a quick recap of what Google showed but, if you want more technical details make sure to check the links in the description.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei confirms departure from the company

Let’s move on to OnePlus as, the company has been in the spotlight a lot this week, first with the reports of Carl Pei leaving, then the event and of course the teasers they put out afterwards. But now it’s finally official, Carl Pei put out a statement earlier today where he confirmed that he is leaving the company. He talked about his 7 year journey with the company, his growth and how he is looking forward to take some time off to decompress and catch up with his family and friends, after that he will follow his heart on to what’s next. All of the rumors point to him moving on to create his own venture so again, we wish you the best in your future endeavors Carl.

Samsung Galaxy S21 may launch sooner than expected

Now let’s talk Samsung as the company usually releases their smartphones on February and maybe even March but, apparently this may not be the case for the S21. There’s been several rumors that we’ll be getting this phone earlier next year and it might just be true. According to Sam Mobile’s sources, due to unforeseen circumstances, it has been decided that there will be a late January or pretty early February, 2021 release. Multiple reports suggest that Samsung’s suppliers have begun mass production for different components of the S21 which also hints to that earlier release. On another note, the S21 just went through a 3C certification, showing the model number, the fact that it brings 25W fast charging and a battery rated at 3880 mAh which pretty much means 4000 and we had seen before. So yeah, it’s pretty early and all things might change but, it looks like we’re getting Galaxies early.

Story of the day:

Apple iPad Air 4th Gen is now available to pre-order starting today

Apple’s ARM-powered Mac could debut on November 17

Apple might finally launch the AirPods Studio in March next year

And finally, the hottest news today has to do with Apple. Yes, today was pre-orders day for the iPhones and the iPad Air, managed to get all of them, but wait, there’s more. Jon Prosser was busy yesterday as he shared a lot of leaks of what to expect from Apple in the coming weeks. He started off by showing a screenshot from Best Buy Canada where the iPad Air is listed to come out on October 23rd, like he predicted earlier and which we covered yesterday and became a reality today. After that he mentioned that sadly, we won’t be getting an Apple TV this year despite all of the other leaks we’ve had. Moving on to something I am pretty interested on, he said that there will be a November Event, specifically for the ARM Macs. According to his sources the event could happen on November 17th with the teaser for it coming out on the 10th. And to conclude Prosser’s leak bomb, he claims that Apple’s next Event after November will happen on March 16th, 2021, with the headliner for that being the AirPods Studio. Oh but we’re not done, Love to dream tweeted out MESA UTS for iPhone, of course we needed a translation to that and Prosser replied with saying “Mesa means Touch ID” and uts means under the screen. So that feature might still make it to an iPhone, but we just wonder what year

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has left the company, claim multiple reports

Now we thought you might want an Apple day without a full episode of iPhone news.. We know, but let’s just say the news today are not what I’d call amazing. See, OnePlus is having their Event tomorrow and something major just happened. According to an Android Central report, Carl Pei has stepped down from his position as the company’s Global Director. According to the report, he is leaving to start his own venture and not to join a different company. He is currently asking for anonymity while he makes the transition. This is a pretty weird time to leave the company, two days before an event with him being the brains behind the Nord concept and with rumors of two new Nord devices coming up. We’ll keep you posted once he announces something and, we’re excited to see where he goes next. On a personal note, Carl, if you’re watching.. Thank you for always being awesome ever since we met many years ago, we wish you all the best, and are here to support your future ventures.

Apple unveils the HomePod Mini with an intercom feature and a $99 price tag [Update]

But now, let’s begin with what you’re here for, the Apple Event. Today’s Event was rather short but we got exactly what we were waiting for. As expected, Cupertino began the event with the HomePod Mini. This HomePod brings a new spherical design that kinda looks like the new Amazon speakers. It brings a new woven mesh fabric, with a display for controls on top, a full-range dynamic driver for output, and a pair of radiators for enhanced bass output. It’s powered by Apple’s S5 chip which allows for Computational Audio. This optimizes loudness, dynamic range and provides a more refined audio output in general. Like the previous one, you can sync multiple HomePod Minis and create a stereo system. But, let’s move on to what the U1 chip can do as the company put a lot of emphasis on it. This allows for users to connect their iPhones by simply getting close to the speaker. It also enables a new intercom feature, allowing you to communicate to other iPhones and HomePod Minis in your household. It also helps with HomeKit controls by just talking to Siri and having it interact with the smart devices in your home. The HomePod Mini will be available for pre-orders on November 6 and in stores by the 16th for $99. Honestly for that price, it’s what the original HomePod should’ve been.

Apple iPhone 12 brings 5G, new display, camera features and more

iPhone 12 Mini offers Bionic A14 upgrade and dual rear cameras starting at $699

Let’s move on to the iPhone 12s, because there’s two now, and I think this is actually the sleeper hit because Apple didn’t cheap out this time. Starting with the regular 12, it now brings a significantly improved 6.1in Super Retina XDR OLED Display, mmWave 5G and a ton of new camera features. It brings a flatter and sharper design which is 11% thinner, and 15% smaller than the iPhone 11. And yes, they also announced the iPhone 12 Mini which brings that same display technology and specs on a 5.4-inch panel, that fits in a 4.5in chassis. The company is marketing this one as the smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G phone in the world. Both of them bring pretty much the same specs, running on the 5NM A14 Bionic which they claim that brings a 50% faster performance than the A13. Moving on to the cameras, they bring a 12MP main sensor at f1.6 and a 12MP ultrawide at f2.4 with 120 degrees of field of view. They are both capable of Smart HDR 3, and Night Mode brings several improvements thanks to the A14. The company also included a new MagSafe magnet on the back of the phone, which pretty much offers an improved wireless charging experience. The magnet helps you snap the phone on to the charger so it doesn’t move, and it also works with cases. Oh, and they quickly showed a dual charger with it but, the date wasn’t revealed so.. Does that ring any memories? Both of these phones will be available in Black, White, Product RED, Green and Blue. The iPhone 12 Mini starts at $699, with that one being available for pre-orders until November 6th, while the 12 will start at $799 and will be available for pre-orders on October 16th. Oh and yeah, the EarPods and the Charging brick… they’re gone.

Story of the day:

Apple iPhone 12 Pro gets slew of updates for $999

iPhone 12 Pro Max is finally a better phone, not just a larger Pro

And finally, the hottest news of the day are not just about the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, but mainly because Apple finally made the larger iPhone different than the smaller one, sort of like the iPhone 7 days. The regular iPhone 12 brings a 6.1in Super Retina XDR OLED Display like the regular iPhone 12, with the brightness going up to 1200 Nits. The Pro Max packs that same display but on a 6.7in body. They’re both also powered by the A14 Bionic which is actually built on a 5nm process, with all the improvements you heard on the last segment. Now, Apple made a lot of buzz on the cameras for these two. The 12 Pro brings a triple camera setup at the back that consists of a 12MP main sensor at f1.6, a 12MP ultra wide angle lens at f/2.4 with 120 degrees field of view, and a 12MP 52mm telephoto that now supports 4x optical zoom, it also brings the LiDAR Sensor which, measures light to create a precise depth map, using the algorithms on iOS 14 to provide 6x faster autofocus in low light and improving depth for low light with Night Mode. Deep Fusion now works on all four cameras, including the selfie shooter. But, let me move on to the 12 Pro Max which actually has me excited. It packs a similar Ultra Wide but with a 13mm sensor, but what’s crazy is that the 12MP primary has pixels of 1.7 microns and it also brings sensor shifting stabilization. The Telephoto on this one is a 65mm sensor with optical zoom. They also introduced Apple Pro RAW which, combines multi-frame processing with the raw format. You can also now record HDR in 10-bit and it does Dolby Vision HDR, meaning 4K at 60fps, edit it in Dolby Vision and apply filters all from the Photos App. Also, the company is adding MagSafe and their new Ceramic Shield display technology to all iPhones announced today. The Pros will be come in Graphite, Silver, Gold and Pacific Blue. The regular 12 Pro will be available with the 12 for pre-orders on October 16th for $999, while the Pro Max will be available with the 12 Mini for pre-orders on November 6th for $1099.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has left the company, claim multiple reports

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has reportedly left the company he helped built from scratch alongside current CEO Pete Lau. Android Central reports, citing two sources privy to the matter, that Pete Lau has stepped down from his position as the director of OnePlus Global. As per a TechCrunch report, which also cites information received from anonymous sources, Pei has left OnePlus and is now planning to start his own venture

Pei was the brains behind OnePlus' budget-centric Nord series smartphones

“Pei, 31, is not joining Samsung, but has clarity on what he wishes to do next. He is starting his own venture, according to a person familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity as they are not authorized to speak with the media,” the report added. Pei is yet to make an official announcement regarding his exit from OnePlus and future plans.

Earlier today, a screenshot of an internal memo that was posted on Reddit (via AndroidPolice), revealed the company’s leadership structure and interestingly, Pei’s name was missing from the list. Pei, who spearheaded the development of OnePlus Nord series and also appeared prominently in the marketing videos as well as documentary films, apparently vacated his role as the head of Nord Product Line, a position that has now been filled by Emily Dai

His departure comes at a time when OnePlus is reportedly planning to launch two budget phones – the OnePlus Nord N10 5G and the OnePlus Nord N100 – on October 26, primarily targeting the US market. Additionally, the company is also holding an event on October 14 to launch its next flagship – the OnePlus 8T. It would be interesting to see whether Pei makes an appearance at either event.

Pei joined OnePlus in 2012 and ever since, he has worked with the company’s other co-founder Pete Lau to lead the brand in its journey of achieving international fame and acclaim. Pei has been the face of OnePlus’ launch events, interactions and customer outreach programs to boost the brand’s image over the years. He is also said to be one of the masterminds behind OnePlus’ virtual marketing strategies.

This is the OnePlus 6 notch that you’ll need to ‘learn to love’, as it ‘just makes sense’

The OnePlus 6 is technically not official yet, and it may not even be called that way, but we already know exactly what size its notch will be, and why it's there to begin with.
