Google brings Live Captions and a new diagnostics app to Chromebooks
Google is adding a host of new features to Chromebooks with the release of Chrome OS v90, which is now rolling out via the stable channel. The first one is the arrival of automatic live captions for media playing on your device. The feature was recently rolled out via an update for Chrome browser after being one of the coolest features of Pixel smartphones for a while.
Automatic live captions on Chromebooks give a big boost to the accessibility aspect, especially in the education sector where these cheap Chrome OS-running machines are fairly popular. To enable Live Captions on your Chromebook, follow this path: Settings > Advanced > Accessibility > Captions (under the Audio and Captions menu). On the Captions page, you can also tweak parameters such as text size, font, text color, background opacity, and text shadow to name a few.
Google is also improving the launcher search feature in Chrome OS. You can now tap on the Everything Button in the top left corner (or on the keyboard) and find answers to some generic queries such as weather information, checking stock price, seeing a word’s definition, and even simple mathematical calculations.
Additionally. Chrome OS 90 also adds a new Diagnostics app that allows you to quickly run tests for checking battery drain, processor, and memory usage to name a few. The app also shows details such as CPU temperature and current clock speed. Additionally, it is capable of running a few more sophisticated tests such as stress and cache test, floating-point accuracy test, and prime search test among others.
You can find the new Diagnostics app in the launcher on your Chromebook. There is also an option to save a log of the tests you’ve run for future reference. And to make the process of troubleshooting even easier, the app also links users to relevant support articles to fix problems with their Chrome OS machine.

HP gives 11th Gen Intel processor boost to Chromebook x360 14c convertible
HP has today launched an updated version of its Chromebook x360 14c convertible. The latest 2-in-1 Chrome OS machine by HP swaps the 10th Gen Intel processor inside its predecessor that was released last year with an 11th Gen Intel processor. Aside from the silicon at its heart, not much has changed in terms of aesthetics and the rest of the innards.
The HP Chromebook x360 14c offers a 14-inch FHD (1920 x 1080 pixels) touch-sensitive panel that supports the USI standard for using a stylus to draw or take notes on it. You’ll be able to choose between configurations with an 11th Generation Intel Core i3-1115G4 processor and the more powerful Core i5 variant. It is paired with 8 gigs of DDR4 RAM and up to 256GB of PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD.
There’s a 3-cell 58Wh battery inside that supports 45W charging and is claimed to last around 10 hours, 45 minutes of mixed usage. The speakers on HP Chromebook x360 14c are tuned by Bang & Olufsen and there is also a fingerprint sensor for authentication. Buyers will get a year’s worth of Google One access that offers benefits such as 100GB of cloud storage.
HP Chromebook x360 14c starts at $649.99 and will be up for grabs from Best Buy and the official HP online store. The base configuration with an 11th Gen Intel Core i3 processor is already up for grabs from Best Buy in the US, but details about its availability in other markets are yet to be revealed.

Chrome OS gets Phone Hub for deeper syncing between your phone and Chromebook
Chrome OS is now officially a decade old, and to mark the 10th birthday, it is getting a bunch of new features. The most useful one of them, in my opinion, is the Phone Hub. As the name makes it abundantly clear, Phone Hub is a one-stop dashboard for your phone that serves as a remote control panel on your Chromebook.
The phone hub will also show the last few links you opened on your Android phone.
Accessible from the shelf, you’ll now see a dedicated phone icon at the bottom that you can tap to open the Phone Hub. On this widget, you can access controls such as enabling your phone’s hotspot, putting it on the silent profile, and locate it. At the top, you’ll also find the battery percentage of your phone and network reception too, alongside the name you’ve picked for your phone while setting it up.
More importantly, the Phone Hub will allow you to respond to messages you’ve received on your phone from your Chrome OS machine itself. Additionally, you will also see cards for the last few Chrome tabs that you accessed on your phone. This is a neat continuity feature, that will let you access some important webpages on your Chromebook without going through any copy-paste or sharing process on your phone.
Additionally, Chrome OS has also landed support for the Wi-Fi sync feature. What this essentially means is if you’ve connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network on your Android phone, your Chromebook will automatically latch on to it without having to go through the password prompt stage that requires you to manually enter the password.
Nearby Sharing finally brings an AirDrop rival to Chromebooks
Google is also extending Nearby Sharing to Chromebooks. This will allow users to share files from their Chromebook with another Chrome OS machine or Android phone with ease. With the arrival of Nearby Share on Chromebooks, Google is finally giving Chrome OS a full-fledged AirDrop competitor that will only get better with the release of Android 12 and subsequent Chrome OS updates.

But how does it fare against the Asus Chromebook Flip C436, which is another convertible with sufficiently powerful innards and a sleek design? Let’s find out:

Now, the Samsung and Asus offerings are neck and neck, both in terms of build quality and aesthetics. Both the machines rock a sleek metallic build with thin bezels on the front and sharp lines. It would boil down to your personal preference as to which color suits your taste buds. This is one area where you really need to get your priorities right. If you want a premium-looking Chromebook that can sail through your lightweight tasks with ease, the 10th Gen Intel Core i3 processor -paired with 8 gigs of RAM and 128GB storage – inside the Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be adequate. However, if you need more firepower, the Asus Chromebook Flip C436 also goes up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor.

And it pairs the more powerful silicon with double the amount of RAM at 16GB and plenty of storage (up to 512GB) of the much faster NVMe PCIe 3.0 type. The battery life won’t be much different between the two machines, at least going by on-paper capacity, as the Samsung and Asus devices come equipped with 45.5Wh and 42Wh Li-ion packs respectively. But in real-world usage, the beefier processor inside the Asus offering will consume more battery juice.

It comes as no surprise that the Asus Chromebook Flip C436 is priced significantly higher compared to the Samsung machine, given the faster chipset and more memory fitted inside the machine. At the end of the day, you’ll have to decide how much power you need before going with either machine, and the options are quite obvious from this perspective. Design and Display
The Galaxy Chromebook 2 sports a usual laptop design as compared to the kick-stand design found on the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. The Samsung offering features a 13.3-inch QLED FHD display with a touchscreen. It comes with two USB Type-C ports and a MicroSD-Multi-media Card Reader. There is Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+), 802.11ax 2×2 as well. It houses a 720P HD camera on the front and comes with stereo speakers.

The Samsung offering seems to be more powerful out of the two, but for day to day usage, both devices can deliver a good performance.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 is a pricier offering as it starts at $549.99 (Intel Celeron 10th Generation), and goes up to $699.99 (Intel Core i3 10th Generation). It is available in two color options of Mercury Gray and Fiesta Red.
On the other hand, the Lenovo Chromebook Duet is available for $230 in Ice Blue + Iron Grey dual-tone finish with a Grey stand cover.
