Android Wear: a smartwatch, not a step counter

Today’s Google I/O Keynote left me a bit on the disappointed side. Sure, Android L looks pretty cool. Somehow the 3D interface is back after a two-year hiatus since everything needs to have depth, apparently. I must have missed that memo, but anyway. There were no new tablets and no new phones but there was an Android Wear smartwatch or three, which brings me to the point of this article. One of the bright spots of the keynote was the official presentation of Android Wear and a real solid walkthrough of the interface and its capabilities. There weren’t a whole lot of surprises there. ...

Will Apple’s smartwatch be a fitness-focused cop-out?

Roughly 18 months ago, smartwatches and other types of wearables were practically nonexistent.Sure, the Nike FuelBand started hitting shelves over two years ago, and a few fitness bands followed thereafter. But it was nothing to the degree it is today. FitBits are everywhere; I see random passersby wearing Pebbles; people ask me all the time if my “watch that buzzes” is “one of those Samsung things”; and it seems everyone is aware of the early onset #glassholes of this world.Wearables – especially smartwatches – are more in the public eye than ever, and some of ...

Samsung Gear Fit review “pre-buttal” (Video)

While Samsung’s fashionable Gear Fit smart watch/fitness accessory saw plenty of action in our recent exercise adventure with S Health, our coverage of the device itself has been limited to just an initial hands-on and an

S Health review: our fitness adventure with Samsung’s Gear Fit, Galaxy S5, and a kayak (Video)

The desk. The keyboard. The chair. If you’re a technology blogger in 2014 (or really any kind of white collar employee) these are very likely the tools which dominate your workday. So when a company like Samsung decides to make fitness a priority with its new flagship smartphone, it can be tough to fully evaluate those features unless you get out from behind that desk. Today, that’s just what we’re doing. While we’ve already given you a glance at Samsung’s S Health suite in our

Is fitness the future of wearables?

Although the “wearables” category is somewhat new to Pocketnow, devices that are meant to be worn, rather than carried, have been around for quite some time. In the very early days they were called pocket watches. Eventually they evolved into timekeepers that we wore around our wrists. Original versions just kept track of time, but other features were added in: day of the week, day of the month, and even moon phases eventually came to wrist watches. Some got barometers, stopwatches, countdown times, calculators, even simple calendars. When Microsoft released its SPOT ...

Huawei TalkBand B1 hands-on (Video)

Huawei wants in on the wearables category, or so it seems, as the Chinese company just announced its own fitness tracker at Mobile World Congress. Aptly named the TalkBand B1, Huawei’s fitness tracker does more than simply work as a wrist-mounted pedometer and track your sleep, it also doubles as a Bluetooth headset. The device itself pops out of the wrist band and can be ...

CES 2014, 60,000 steps later

A few days before heading out to Las Vegas for my third consecutive Consumer Electronics Show, I started having flashbacks to the … uhm … adventure the previous two shows had been. Not only were they scheduling and logistical nightmares, they were hell on your feet, back, sleep schedule, and morale, much less your health. For anyone who has never been to a trade show like International CES, it’s essentially three or four days of intense walking, minimal eating, and lots on stress. Oh, and there might be some (or a ...

CES 2014 recap (Video)

CES 2014 was a blur. Michael, Tony, and I were on the ground, and it felt like it was over as soon as we really got started. We walked dozens of miles, filmed a handful of new and innovative products, and hung out with all our colleagues. Samsung unveiled four new tablets: Galaxy NotePRO 12.2, Galaxy TabPRO 12.2, Galaxy TabPRO 10.1, and Galaxy TabPRO 8.4. Sony pulled the curtain on two new phones: the Xperia Z1S and Z1 Compact. ZTE revealed an arsenal of new devices. And Huawei followed up the Ascend Mate from last year with ...

LG Lifeband Touch hands-on (Video)

LG is entering the ever-popular fitness tracking wearable market with the recently announced, wrist-mounted Lifeband Touch. With a expected battery life of two to five days, a touch-sensitive OLED display, and one-size-fits-all design, it certainly has enough allure to raise some eyebrows. The Lifeband Touch has a companion app which will be available on both Android and iOS, but it will also work with a bevy of third-party applications, as well. It tracks things like steps, workout time, heart rate, and calories burned. You ...

What are your New Year’s tech resolutions?

It’s that time of year when we all reflect on how this year has been, how we’ve exceeded (or failed to meet) our goals and expectations, and how we can do better next year. I’m not a huge fan of the resolution rush at the turn of every year. Although I understand the significance and symbolism which appeals to many, I don’t need to turn the page of a manmade calendar to force myself to do … better. I’m a firm believer in recognizing problems and implementing a change at that exact moment. That said, when it comes to technology, my life could always use a ...
