Samsung tablets: more isn’t always better

In the tablet space, Samsung is a quickly growing giant. Almost single-handed, Samsung has cut Apple’s tablet market share in half – from over 60 percent in 2012 to 30 percent in Q1 this year – while snapping up 23 percent of the global tablet share in Q1.We never had any doubt this would be the case, even with how half-baked the first two or three generations of its tablets were. Take the original Galaxy Tab, for example. It was a 7-inch knee-jerk reaction to the iPad. It ran Android, of course, ...

With a Nexus 7 out there, why would anyone buy a Galaxy Tab?

I know: that’s a bait-y headline that begs for qualifiers, and we’ll get to those in just a second. Before that, though, I’d like to apologize to those who’ve been waiting for our full review of the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. For those of you who’ve gotten lost in the avalanche of news since we took delivery on our own Tab 3 8.0 review unit, we unboxed the device a few weeks back – and then we immediately put it up against its closest Samsung-branded competitor, the ...

Samsung, stop making 10-inch tablets with WXGA displays

With mobile devices, arguably the most important specification is the display. Yes, other specifications are vital, too. Of course, you wouldn’t have a smartphone without a large battery, capable processor, GPU, RAM, or storage. But with tablets and smartphones, the primary input and output is the display. It’s how you navigate the device, input text, read information, watch videos, and practically everything else you can do with mobile devices. The rapid advancement of display technology only lends credence to the importance of the display. (Not that anyone should dispute the ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 review: overpriced and outdated

In the Android tablet market, Samsung is the dominant force. It’s the only Android manufacturer with double-digit global tablet market share – 17.9 percent as of Q1 2013. Other manufacturers, like ASUS or Amazon, trail Samsung by a rather wide margin. As such, Samsung is poised to continue doing what it does best: saturating the market with dozens of remarkably similar devices in virtually every size imaginable. The Galaxy Tab family, for example, includes 7-inch, 7.7-inch, 8-inch, 8.9-inch, and 10.1-inch models. To no surprise, Samsung introduced the third-generation Galaxy Tab ...

Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 vs Xperia Tablet Z (Video)

The Xperia Tablet Z, when we reviewed it, was one of the best Android tablets to have ever entered our labs. And that certainly hasn’t changed in the last month and a half. It’s the full package – great specifications, a fairly impressive display, dust proof, water resistant, and, well … gorgeous. That said, Samsung has been around the block. And it’s Galaxy tablets easily outperform every other Android tablet brand without breaking a sweat – on retail shelves, that is. The latest slab to leave ...

The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0: I don’t know why Samsung made this

Let’s put this out there right away: this is not a review. Our full review of the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 will be coming next week, after we’ve spent the requisite week or so with the device, so watch out for that. It’s also not a hit piece. For all the limitations I’m about to call out, I have no desire to see it fall victim to a hatchet job. There are things about the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 I quite enjoy. But I also don’t know where it fits in the lineup, in the landscape – or I guess, in the world. In other words: I don’t know why it exists. And judging from ...

Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 vs Nexus 10 (Video)

Samsung, like with its smartphones, has successfully saturated the tablet market with various models and brands that cover a wide array of sizes, specifications, price points, and unique features. The latest of those tablets is the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. Oddly enough, the Tab 3 10.1 is strikingly similar to the Tab 2 10.1, on paper. The only major difference is the use of an Intel Atom processor and an ever-so-slightly smaller battery. The 16GB model retails ...

Pocketnow Weekly 053: HTCs are getting smaller, and Lumias are getting laaaaaarger

Never let it be said that Multimedia Manager Jaime Rivera isn’t a trouper. In the hot Honduras heat, with no power and no A/C (and, incidentally, no shirt), he still manages to show up on-time to the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. That right there is some broadcast heroism, folks. No matter what Taylor Martin’s new-office excuses are. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. No, we’re about a week overdue for an audio-only examination of Nokia’s newest flagship, the Lumia 1020: we’ll cover it’s high, low, and so-so points, and debate just how ...

Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 unboxing (Video)

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is Samsung’s first Intel-based tablet. It features, of course, a 10.1-inch display at 1,280 by 800 pixels, 1GB RAM, 16 or 32GB fixed storage, a microSD card slot for up to an additional 64GB, a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, and a 6,800mAh battery. Basically, it’s the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 all over again, except it has an Intel processor and 200mAh smaller battery. The question is: is the Tab 3 10.1 worth the upgrade or extra cash? It’s too soon to tell. But our labs ...

Samsung shares US Galaxy Tab 3 retail launch details

The Galaxy Tab 3 lineup is nothing new. Samsung announced the Tab 3 7.0 all the way back in April, and followed that up with news of the Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1 three weeks ago. So, while the cat may be out of the bag concerning any hardware details, Samsung had yet to confirm details about just when we’d be able to get our hands on these tablets, and for how much. It helps us out ...

HTC’s revenue grows, market share stats, Apple repairs cracked iPhones & more – Pocketnow Daily

Watch today’s Pocketnow Daily as we talk about Toshiba’s new line-up of tablets and why these don’t really move the dot for the company in their mobile endeavors. Then we talk about Intel as the company has landed two new mobile processors and has even won Samsung as a customer with the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. We look at the smartphone market share statistics and notice the supremacy of Android, the growth of iOS and Windows Phone and the decline of BlackBerry. HTC is next as we talk about their dramatic increase in revenue for May and also the price increase of the HTC One. ...

Intel gets its chips in Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1

Yesterday, we heard Samsung announce a couple new tablets, including the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. That version of the Tab 3 popped up on our radar the week prior when some rumors crossed our desk, suggesting that this device could mark the start of a new business relationship between Samsung and Intel, as rather than the standard Exynos or Snapdragon, the 10.1 was said to be powered by one of Intel’s SoCs. That would be very interesting if ...

Samsung turning to Intel for Galaxy Tab 3?

Intel’s re-emergence on the smartphone scene has been a weird little story so far. The company seems to have realized the big mistake it made by not capitalizing on the smartphone market from the get-go, and is now trying to get its chips into new hardware. Problem is, despite being such a huge player in the CPU game, smartphone manufacturers haven’t exactly been running in droves to sign up for Intel chips. Now, Windows 8 devices are one story, but when it comes to Android, ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Hardware Specs Rumored

The past several months have been rife with rumors about new Galaxy Tab hardware from Samsung, but have seemed a little uncertain with regard to the details. We’ve heard names like the Galaxy Tab 3 Plus thrown around, and checked out a render of uncertain origin. We’re still trying to lock-down just what to expect from Samsung here, and now some new rumors arrive describing what we might see from both an 8-inch, as well as a 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 3. With the growing popularity of the Note series in tablet ...
