Samsung throws Galaxy TabPRO 8.4 under the bus when it comes to software updates

It happens to every device sooner or later (HTC HD2 notwithstanding): after months, if not years of dutiful support from the manufacturer, eventually we see software updates dry up. It’s not necessarily a death sentence for every piece of hardware, but especially in a world where regular access to system updates can mean the difference between operating a secure device and putting all your private data at ...

Samsung tablets: more isn’t always better

In the tablet space, Samsung is a quickly growing giant. Almost single-handed, Samsung has cut Apple’s tablet market share in half – from over 60 percent in 2012 to 30 percent in Q1 this year – while snapping up 23 percent of the global tablet share in Q1.We never had any doubt this would be the case, even with how half-baked the first two or three generations of its tablets were. Take the original Galaxy Tab, for example. It was a 7-inch knee-jerk reaction to the iPad. It ran Android, of course, ...

Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4 review: a killer tablet for multimedia and productivity

Samsung has been making tablets since the second half of 2010, trying to close the gap between its own market share and the current tablet market share leader, Apple. Currently, Apple holds a 36 percent share of the tablet market. The only manufacturer even remotely threatening Apple’s share is Samsung, which currently holds 19.1 percent, according to Gartner. At CES in January, Samsung dropped

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 vs Google Nexus 7 2013 (Video)

Both of Google’s Nexus 7 have been renowned for being such great bargains. The current-gen Nexus 7, made by ASUS, retails for a staggeringly low $229, yet it features pretty impressive specifications and performance, all things considered. Samsung is no stranger to the small tablet category, but the real question is: can it’s latest miniature tablet compete with the likes of Google’s budget-friendly option? On a price scale, not quite. The

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 vs iPad mini with Retina display (Video)

Apple, whether it admits the iPad is a tablet or not, is the tablet market share leader by a rather wide margin. Samsung currently holds about half the market share Apple does, and it’s slowly gaining ground. Its tablets continually get better with each generation, to boot. At CES in January, Samsung announced its latest tablet lineup, the Galaxy Tab Pro line. The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is a direct competitor to Apple’s latest miniature tablet, the

Four ways full-sized Android tablets (still) aren’t ready for primetime

I’ve had some wonderful experiences with Android tablets. Loading CyanogenMod on the HP TouchPad, an activity I documented in my first-ever video for Pocketnow, filled in some crucial capability gaps left open by the TouchPad’s native OS. Carrying a first-gen Nexus 7 for a week in 2012 taught me just how compelling Jelly Bean in the 7-inch form factor ...

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 unboxing (Video)

Samsung unveiled a slew of new tablets at CES back in January. Some of them were interesting, but the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is what truly caught our eye – particularly its super sharp display. At 8.4 diagonal inches, the Super Clear LCD panel has a very impressive QWXGA resolution, or 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. That’s a density that rivals many smartphones, let alone competing tablets. And the rest under the hood sounds great, as ...

Pocketnow Weekly 086: @evleaks

“What would you say to the people who think that what you do is illegal?” ” … I would tell them that I don’t want to answer this question.” When you’re interviewing the world’s most notorious phone leaker, he’s bound to duck a question or two. But cautious though he is, Evan Blass –formerly of Pocketnow and currently known across the web by his pen name

Samsung fills in the blanks on US Galaxy NotePRO, TabPRO launch

Yesterday we started getting some answers to the questions we’ve been asking for the past several weeks about the commercial availability of the new Samsung Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO tablets. The big detail we wanted to see filled-in was pricing, and we got that as a retailer opened pre-orders of the 64GB NotePRO 12.2 and the 32GB TabPRO 12.2. Those two only make up a fraction of the full lineup, so luckily Samsung comes through today with details on the rest. Remember, we already saw the 64GB NotePRO 12.2 ...

Samsung’s Magazine UX: hot or not?

It’s easy to be overly critical of Samsung. The company is larger than some of its biggest competitors several times over, and it has the man power, resources, and know-how to not make some pretty obvious mistakes over and over again. We’ve reamed Samsung more than once for shipping substandard products with laughably awful software and performance optimization. TouchWiz UX, for example, has shipped on dozens of Samsung products over the years. It’s not only long in the tooth, cluttered, and … ugly, it ...
